"BIZARRE!" Andy Goldstein REACTS to Enzo Maresca's comments on Man City's guilty verdict!
talkSPORT debates Man City's guilty verdict, Maresca's defence and the Liverpool clash
The show reacts to Manchester City's guilty verdict, focusing on Enzo Maresca's claim that City's achievements are not tainted, whether he should face such questions, and the mood around Liverpool vs City. Hosts, guests and callers also clash over the right punishment, with views ranging from heavy sanctions and relegation to the idea that hostility will spur City on.
- Manchester City's achievements are not tainted — He knows firsthand the effort the players, the club and Pep put in to reach those targets
- City's achievements are tainted and it is bizarre to treat the guilty verdict as not guilty just because an appeal is pending — A guilty verdict stands unless an appeal changes it; he compares it to a murder conviction
- There is no point asking Maresca whether the achievements are tainted — He is employed by the accused club and must defend it; no manager in that position would admit it
- Wants Liverpool to beat City because City are Arsenal's biggest title rival, and many neutrals want Liverpool to win for the good of football — A Liverpool win helps Arsenal's title chances; City broke rules while Arsenal did not, so many want City punished
- He would still have joined Manchester City 100 per cent even if he had known about the guilty verdict — He knows the club is serious and does things the right way, and he expects to speak after winning the appeal
- If found guilty, City should be put in League Two with a transfer ban and a fine — A fine alone does not hurt billionaire owners, and points deductions cannot simply be applied in the Championship or EFL for a Premier League breach, so relegation and a transfer ban are needed
- City are still benefiting from the breaches today and successes like the Aguero moment were built on cheating — The breaches ended in 2018 but the squad and rewards still carry the advantage; without them, the Aguero-era team would not have existed in the same way
- City will use the hostility as fuel and smash the league with an us-against-the-world mentality — Every away game will become their best away game, and that will give them belief
- City should have all prize money taken away for the next five to ten years and redistributed down the football pyramid — That would genuinely hurt them while giving something back to grassroots and lower-league football

Oh, it's going to be some atmosphere on Sunday as Man City head to Anfield. >> Jurgen to the left, Pep to the right. >> De Bru's waiting in the center. DE BRUYNE AGAINST DARREN SLY AT HOME. IT'S MO Salah against Ortega AND IT'S INTO THE BOTTOM CORNER. >> OUR bigger rivals make me feel make make us as a team better team. >> I often have to say and meaning that is the best man. >> Sub blocks and sideesh shows swirl around a rig rivalry. how things could change so quickly. >> You know, it's something that [music] we probably don't want to talk about because we want to be looked upon as winning them trophies, winning in the right way. Anything is possible and all hell is now going to break loose. >> There will be defiance amongst Manchester City fans, but I do hope that the appeal and the sanctions are done quickly. I'm already tired of this narrative that those memories and that that connection that City fans have with the players and what's happened over the past 10 years therefore doesn't hold value. Whatever happens, it promises to be riveting. And so it all starts again. >> What a weekend of football. What a weekend of football. Man City go away to Liverpool on Sunday in their first game. Of course, since being handed a guilty verdict over their financial charges, Liverpool arguably the biggest victims of Man City's cheating between the years of 09 and 18. in the city. Boss Enz Mesa spoke to the media for the first time since that verdict earlier on today and he was asked if the club's achievements are now tainted. >> Absolutely not. Uh again I the last time I was here was the treble season. I know the effort from the players from the club from the manager in that time that was Pep. So I know exactly the effort that the club put to achieve that kind of you know target. So I don't have any doubt about that. >> They don't feel tainted to you. >> Absolutely not. >> I mean they are they are right. As things come it's very bizarre the man thing even you know when we speak to people they say well guilty at the moment but there is an appeal right I can't I can't remember any other verdict whe that was how people treated it as things can't stand man you're guilty right of cheating. So if that's the case, if they are guilty, which they are, >> it has been tainted. I mean, is that I know he's I know he's the manager. That's the problem we've got. He's the manager, but but facts are facts. As things currently, if you found guilty of murder, you're guilty. It's not, well, you're guilty until we put an appeal in. That's how it it might change. It may it may well change, right? But as things currently stand, they are guilty. It it is >> I don't know what Marissa could do, though. >> No, I know you're right. Is is employed by the people that are accused of doing whatever they did. So them putting pressure on him and ask him the questions. He's got to defend the club that he's managing course. There's no one on the planet you ask him a question by saying is it taint is he ever going to turn and go well yeah it is. >> No you are right. >> You know what I mean? So in some respects there's no point even asking him that question. >> What what I'm stunned about I mean do you think it's right that Mesa had to even face those questions because you've always you've always got press next to you and I've seen interviews have as you have shut down. No I've told you we're not doing >> I've done interviews where the press officers gone listen we're not talking about that. >> What how has that even been allowed to been asked? I don't get that. Well, no. Enzo might have gone, "You know what? It's fine. I can bat it away. It's not a problem. This is what I'm going to say." >> No, but before before cameras start rolling, press office comes out and goes, "Just let you know, we're not answering any questions about >> there'll be no press there." So, they need they need an interview with him today. If if they are not allowed to ask about the current situation at Man City, then all the press will go, "No point being there." >> No, they'll still be there because it's such a not one journalist there wants to hear anything about the game. They all want his his thoughts about what's happening. >> But you're right. Right. They know he can't answer any questions. >> They're still going to push because he might say something and slip up even if he doesn't mean it a certain way and they've got him then. Do you know what I mean? But in that situation, Moresque is always just going to bat it away. And I mean, this game here is going to be fascinating because listen, me being an Arsenal fan, I want Liverpool to win for different reasons. I want cuz I I look at I look at Man City as Arsenal's biggest title challenges. So, I want Liverpool to beat them. So, then that gs a chance if they can beat Leads to then, you know what I mean, give us a better opportunity. But, I get it for the neutral. They're looking at this going if Liverpool win it's for the good of football. I mean that that's what a lot of neutrals are thinking. They're saying listen we we can't stand they might they might be like we can't stand Liverpool and we definitely don't want Arsenal to win the league but in this situation where Arsenal haven't broken the rules >> and City have they want City to be punished. >> Well one more bill is a Chelsea fan. Die hard Chelsea by the way Arsenal hates Arsenal wants Arsenal to win the league over City >> wants hopes. Do you think a lot of Chelsea fans will feel like that? >> Potentially. >> Do you think Spurs fans will want Arsenal to win the league over City? >> Yeah, but you say that, but I mean, I don't know. I'm not Spurs fan, but potentially they might because Arsenal have already done the league. So, they've already suffered that pain already that Arsenal have lifted the Premier League title. So, what's one more? >> Do you know what I mean? I know but you can't what as a Spurs fan as a Chelsea fan by the way but there can't be one Spurs fan out there that looks at what Man City have done and thought I don't want them to win the league I'd rather Arsenal win it. >> I wonder if Spurs fans are even thinking about that. I wonder if Spurs fans are just thinking you know what we're we're in a relegation battle ourselves. Forget what Arsenal doing. We've seen >> I know but it's a totally separate game for them. I I I think at the moment Spurs fans, I know the the rivalry between the two football clubs, but surely you're best off just thinking I like I wouldn't like us in the league because it's our our rival, but at the end of the day, they're almost irrelevant now. We're in two different brackets. I ask all their winning titles trying to compete and we're >> in the bottom three. Let's not waste energy worrying about what they're doing. It's what about what we're doing. >> Who will Everton fans want to win this game? >> I always look at, do you know what's mad cuz I always look at Scouse people even though there's >> three scouters. Scousers, right? >> Yeah. >> That are obviously blue and red. >> But when it comes down to it, they are all in it together. >> Well, I we've had this conversation with Scout before and they said it used to be like that, but now there's more of a divide. I don't know how true that is. >> I don't know, but we'll never certainly do. >> You think Tony Belly wants to win? >> Oh, he's definitely he'll be Liverpool. Yeah, he'll be Liverpool, I reckon. We'll ask him. >> Yeah, you got something you >> Tony right. [laughter] Should I drop my message? >> Weasel, he listens every day. He's got nothing better going on in his life. Um Tony, you can phone. >> He's going to punch you in your chest one day. You understand that, right? >> He loves I've told you he loves hate thing. >> Well, no, >> I love him. He hates me. [laughter] >> Um let's talk about the atmosphere briefly at Anfield at the weekend because I mean he's going to be above and beyond and do you expect any big banners with cheats and all that stuff? I mean, do you think Limple will go to town on it? >> Um will they go to town in it? Maybe. I remember all the frackard last year with the goal all the frackard last year the goal at the end remember Harden fouled someone Liverpool winning one n0il they got beat 2-1 that's >> right with like 90 plus >> four yeah mad madness so >> yeah that you might see one or two banners for sure whether there's going to be a whole stand where obviously the letters cheat I don't know about that >> I've seen that on socials I don't know how true >> yeah but I'm sure they'll love something for sure >> uh we could actually hear a bit more from Enzer now he was speaking of course earlier on he was asked if he'd still have joined the club if the guilty verdict would have been announced before he arrived >> 100%. >> And can I ask ask why that is >> because uh again I know the organization from years ago and I know how serious they are. I know that they they do the right things. So again I I I would like to speak about this when we're going to win the the appeal. >> Do you believe him? You would have joined if he would have known that they potentially could be relegated fin ban on >> Yeah. potentially is a big it's a big old club man city you know what I mean with well we obviously I'd say rich history but we obviously don't know what's going to happen but yeah still a top job I know what what's happened's gone on but >> I mean what's the what's the worst case they get relegated to Championship he's been there >> you don't know what could be leaked could be thrown out you just don't know >> I have the more I think about it right I I almost feel like they're going to stay in the Premier League and just have mass massive points deduction year on year >> how many years >> well this is the thing however long it takes to kind of math up the points >> what do you What are you thinking right now? >> How long has it been going on? 13 years. >> No. Uh nine. 09 to 18. >> So, and how many points would that be? Say it's 100 points. >> How many points will that be? >> Well, obviously everyone got done for eight points for a certain charge. >> Yeah. Oh, no one knows. >> Yeah. So, that that's what But I cuz you think if you if you relegate them then that means the EFL have got to punish them. >> Yeah. >> And if that will >> cuz they could come up the following year. >> Yeah. So, I if I'm honest, I have no idea. >> Okay. With everything you know now, what do you think the punishment should be >> right now? Yeah. >> I mean, I said before that I league two. If they're found guilty of the that >> Well, they have been found currently the verdict. >> League two. >> Yeah. >> And a ban on transfers and a fine. >> Yeah. Yeah. I'd say fines are relevant. Finding them. Yeah. For the sake of finding them, but where you find them? >> Half a billion still hurts people, doesn't it? >> Not if you've got 150 billion. [laughter] Do you know what I mean? >> That is true. >> 500 million. Right. >> Yeah. Yeah. You're right. You're right. League Two >> and transfer bans. >> Yeah. Because you you can't give them points deductions cuz they didn't commit the crime in the championship in the EFL. >> No. >> Unless the EFL suddenly go, well, do you know what? We're working with the Premier League, which never happens. >> That happened. Yeah. Okay. Who do you think will win, by the way? >> Um I want to say Liverpool, right? But you know, you know, it's like City all of a sudden putting this performance just to annoy people. Just annoy people. >> Yeah. Red cards. >> Yeah, there might be a few. I'm going to go I think Liverpool might win this. Go >> on. Score 2-1. Okay. Uh >> Josh is a Liverpool fan. Can't wait for this. Hello, Josh. How you doing? >> Hello. Can you hear me? >> Loud and clear. How are you? >> All right. Yeah, I'm good, thank you. How are you? >> Good, thank you for asking. What would you like to say? >> I've got two main points I want to bring up. The first of which is that City is still benefiting from all this to this day. It might have ended in 2018, but they're still reckon they're still reaping the rewards from it with the team they've got. >> That's correct. Who? >> Think of the Aguero moment. It wouldn't have been Aguero. There would have been no Yo Tore. They'd have been rocking Steven Ireland and Benjani. a good playm >> I got nothing against him but you know to the to this day and I also think the players the Liverpool players especially are going to be so up for this they're all going to be you know they've got to rock this party line of it they're not thinking about it doesn't affect them I guarantee you it will they'll feel nothing better than beating Man City this weekend >> do you think you have to beat them for the good of football >> 100% I think every football fan in the country is going to want Liverpool to win >> I don't Liverpool to him. >> Why? >> Cuz he's Liverpool and I support Man United. >> Fair. But they they're going to the Liverpool players are going to want vengeance. >> Yeah. No, of course. I understand that. I understand. >> That's what that's what it's going to be. It's just going to be, you know, out of principle, they're going to want to go and beat them. >> What the score be? >> 9. I don't know. 2-1. >> 2-1. Okay. Will is a a Wolves fan. Hi, Will. How you doing? Will, you there? Will Will is there? Will can you hear me? He's not there. Let's go to Heb. Good name. Hello Heb Chelsea fan. >> Hello, boys. Uh, just before I say my piece, I wanted to check whether Benty can say the word decompartmentalize yet. [snorts] >> Decompartmentalize. >> He Oh, that's good. >> He's been training. He's in He's in checking. That's good. That's >> He before you finish your conversation, ask Betty to say it again before you go. >> Can you say it again? Decompartmentalize. No, no, but don't say compartmentalized. No, but don't say don't say the word. Don't say the word. Okay. But when you finish, what you going to say? Then ask him. What do you want to say, Heb? >> Okay. So, three points. I think controversy is good. It keeps the conversation relevant and keeps the conversation going, which let's face it, for the past 3 weeks is all everybody's been talking about. I think if city start going down the league in terms of position because of performance, any penalties that come that way are going to be less relevant. And by that I mean the punishment is only going to be relevant if they keep on winning. Right. >> No, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. Sorry. So again, the punishment will only be relevant if they keep winning. >> If they right for if City are all all of a sudden they start going down to six, seven, any punishment that they get in terms of points, it's going to be less relevant because it would have it would have >> if they get 100 point penalty, it don't matter if they're first or six, it's huge. >> No, but if they But what if it's not 100? What if it's 40? Right. Well, stop winning the >> difference if >> Well, it does, but I still think it would hurt them more if they finished first. >> Okay. >> Right. Because because you you're taking away the title as well as >> Okay. Yeah. I can't argue with that. Yeah. >> The final thing I think it was you that said uh every away game that they play this season is going to be the best away game in that stadium. >> I think that's going to fuel them. It's going to give them a belief to kind of go is us against the world and they're going to they're just going to smash the league. I really do think that. >> Do you? >> Okay. >> I do. >> Ask Benty to say the word again. >> Can you say it, Benty? >> Decompartmentalize. >> You written it down. >> I tell you what. >> Now, Heb, you are the Yoda. Thank you very much. [laughter] >> Thank you, brother. >> You're the Yoda. Uh, have we got >> You say it. >> De Oh, there we go. >> Hold on. Don't just yo me halfway through the word. You've written yours down. >> Say it. >> Decompartmentalize. Come on, boy. I wonder if James can say it. Hello, James. >> Hi. >> Can you take the word >> be compartmentalized? >> Easy for him. Jeez. >> Do you know what he means? >> Yeah. Strip things down, separate things out, and then you take them all, but put them all back together. >> Oh, he's school teacher. >> Can you um can you use that word in uh in part of the sentence to describe what you phoned up for today? >> Yeah. Go on then. So, City need to have all their prize money decompartmentalized from their wallets and they need to have everything. Hold on. [laughter] >> My producer Joe, who is like dictionary corner, he's telling me no, that's the wrong use of that word. >> Okay, decompartment. No, sorry. If you compartmentize something, you're separate out. So, they need to have all the money gathered together and put into one big pot and back down the football pyramid. So that all their prize money, everything they win from now on for the next five, 10 years, they don't get anything any prize money for winning anything. >> You need to say something like Moresca decompartmentalized many things when he was asked that question about Man City. That works. >> That's a good reference. Good good example as well. >> I had no help with that, by the way. Go on. What do you want to say then about uh Absolutely. You're a Man United fan, right? >> I am. Go on then. So this the weekend's game is the weekend's game. I hope it's called off due to lack of interest for whatever the score is. I don't care. But I hope that they get the worst reception possible when they turn up at Anfield. I really hope they give it, you know, give them the clubs because they've cheated. You know, there's there's no two ways about it. They need to feel the embarrassment. They need to feel the pressure every single match they do for the rest of the season, next season, because they don't deserve to be where they are. It's as simple as that, isn't it? >> Do you know what? When I spoke about the fine, right, and someone's made a really good point. I was going to steal it, but I'm not. But if they hit with the whatever they have, pointed deductions and all that and then a big fine. >> I mean, the the fine could go towards grassroots in the football pyramid. >> Yeah, everyone's talking about >> Yeah, that that's the one. >> That's not the fell's idea. That's been said minutes. >> But that there's a way you go. Listen, we'll do this to kind of appease it. >> Well, all the other clubs want money. No, but they all want conversation. >> Yeah. Yeah. It's good. I'm fascinated.
