"HAS TO LEAVE VILLA!" Simon Jordan QUESTIONS whether Unai Emery could manage Manchester United!
talkSPORT debates whether Unai Emery could manage Manchester United and whether he should leave Aston Villa
The discussion starts with Luis Enrique's PSG and Manchester United's cyclical ups and downs before focusing on Unai Emery's future. Guillem Balagué says Emery is valued at Aston Villa and could definitely manage Manchester United; Simon Jordan questions his record at elite clubs and argues financial rules prevent Villa from realising his potential, so he will eventually have to leave.
- Luis Enrique has created something extraordinary at PSG — Even with top players such as Dembele out, the replacements kept the same idea and level; PSG have shifted from Galacticos to academy and local talent, strengthening the club's identity.
- Manchester United will dominate again because success is cyclical — They were a shadow of themselves through the 1970s and 1980s, even relegated in 1974, and only took off after the Premier League began; Chelsea changed direction under Roman Abramovich. Nothing lasts forever, so United can return under different ownership.
- Emery has everything he wants at Aston Villa and no reason to leave — He is appreciated, given the resources and responsibility, including co-ownership, to take the team as far as he can.
- Emery is fully capable of managing Manchester United and his PSG and Arsenal record is misread — At Arsenal he tried to change things that later helped Arteta; at PSG he was unlucky to meet the best Barcelona and Real Madrid sides in the Champions League, and the Paris hierarchy still rate him among their top managers.
- Emery is a top coach, but there is still doubt over whether he can succeed at a true elite club — His real successes came at Villarreal, Sevilla and potentially Aston Villa, clubs of a different scale; his two chances at big clubs, PSG and Arsenal, did not produce comparable success.
- Emery has to leave Aston Villa because current financial rules stop Villa from realising his potential — Villa cannot enter the turnover bracket of Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City, so under PSR he cannot achieve what he could with equal financial opportunity; that is tragic for Villa fans.
- Winning the Europa League with Villa would maximise his potential there, but elite clubs judge success by different rules — He accepted that a sustained Villa project with a Europa League win would maximise his resources; the difference is that Barcelona, Bayern, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United are measured by another standard.

European football expert Geian Balague in studio with Simon and myself this Thursday morning. You have had a whistle stop tour uh in various European countries of late. Mr. European football expert GM um I saw you the other night at PSG. My god. I mean for a moment everybody over in that part of the world could forget about the street riots and feast their eyes on the football team that they've got. Luis Enrique, he made a point of shaking the hands of all the Barcelona players at the end, didn't he? >> Not just that, he told Rafiniah how to score against PSG. He had time for that as well. So, he said, you know, when Patrick comes in, you just have to put the ball in behind and then you run. And he told him how to do it. Uh cuz he's the kind of person that is enjoying life and enjoying what uh he's been given. And Simon was saying a very good point of of Mike that he arrived at PSG at the right time. Yeah. because PSG and Kifi was was were ready to have somebody that took over, but also that was the only condition he put in. I'm coming in, I'm taking over. And he had Mbappe for one season, but already Mbappe felt that that wasn't his team anymore. And he's talking about this idea that everybody has to think the same way. They all think the same way. And it's wonderful to to watch. And it was interesting in the preview talking to Lucho and talking to Hansifle and others about what the game meant because it's a group stage the league stage and so on. But everybody was like no no we're the two best teams in Europe. Let's see where we stand right now. PSG weren't sure um they in the league they at the top but equal with other three teams and they just came out thinking we are the best >> right >> and Barcelona thinking they are the best. There's no doubt that what Lucen Enrique has created is extraordinary and lucky that he's now got Dembele out for a month and a half and Marinos for a week or two and of course Cavara for the rest of the season. These are top quality players, but the ones that came on just continue with the same idea at the same level consistently to great success. >> Yeah, phenomenal. They've gone from Galacticos to to homegrown talent, haven't they? M and that was that was the idea again defended by uh not so much Luc Enrique but the club. How about if all these guys if we you if you make a selection of par Paris and you take them to a World Cup they probably win the World Cup. They got players that have come through the ranks of uh Paris FC or PSG who are extraordinary. So they decided why not as a way to embrace get the fans to embrace the club even more >> and they are they are top in the noise that they make and so on. Why not bring players through and uh and they've done that and it's it's fascinating to see how there's two buildings the academy building in the new training ground. academy building at the bottom of a hill and the first team building at the top. But the first hill building is looking away at the uh at the academy and the academy is looking up at the first team and there is a hill and as you go up through the stairs you see the names of all the players that have gone from the academy to the first team just a symbolic gesture but in general that's what they want superstars and academy players. >> See it's easy to say it Sam but Manchester United should be what PSG have become >> shouldn't they? >> But that's easy to say isn't it? I mean PSG wanted to become what Manchester United were. >> So you know people Man United Man United Man United went through the entire 70s and the 80s as a shadow of themselves. They got relegated to the second division in 1974. They replaced Matt Busby with Franco Farrell or Wolf McInness or whoever else it was and they went through a period of time in the 70s and 80s where the best they could do was win an FA Cup. The Premier League arrived suddenly their engine started and they dominated for a period of time. Chelsea came in, changed the direction of travel Roman Abramovich and we've gone on from there. Yeah, United will come around again. It will be cyclical. Maybe not under this ownership, maybe under a different ownership, but there will be a period of time when Man United dominated again. Nothing lasts forever. Barcelona 30, 40 years ago weren't weren't the Barcelona that we have now. Sure. So, we'll see it again. But let's not use PSG just because they're having their moment in the sun. This manager won't be there be there forever. >> Again, because I've got you trapped live in studio with Simon and myself, I'm going to put it to you. You know the man well. Of course you do. You've written a book with him. Uni Emory >> Bill fans apologies in advance. If Carrick goes and United are looking out, are they looking at Emory? >> You have to take this question from Unai Mary's point of view. This is my opinion, but uh basically he is where he wants to be. he is where he's appreciated uh where he has been given everything that is required including uh the co-ownership the owners are coown now his own little club back in Spain including that but um he has been given also a huge amount of responsibility to take the team as far as he wants to and he wants to use that responsibility to take the team as far as he can >> right and life is good at Villa isn't it >> and that that last night yes even though Stan is missing And the noise is not what has been in the past. You still got a team that again, and this is the theme of this conversation, they all know what they have to do when they go on the pitch. And they had players missing, >> but still the ones that came on, even Mings as a left back, they knew what they had to do. They can play with their eyes closed. And when you follow PSG closely, when you follow Hansifix Barcelona, when you follow um Aston Villa and then you see a team that just look at the players are looking at each other, it's like what are you doing in training? What are you doing with your time? What are you doing players that are you not listening? It's really annoying. But can he do that job? Yeah. >> Uh 100% he can. And >> at United, >> there is a there is a bad perception of what he did. um wrong perception in my eyes of what he did at PSG at Arsenal. Arsenal was the pause banger era and now we realize it's taking Arteta so long because a lot of things had to change which he tried but wasn't heard on. Yeah. >> And at PSG he was unlucky for the two years that he was there in Champions League to meet the best Barcelona and the best Real Madrid of the last 15 years. Yeah. And that's that's why he just you know fell short but still he is seen by Nasel Kafi that we mentioned already as one of the top managers he's ever had. Wow. I mean, there might come a time that you and I em will think I've taken Ashtonville as far as I can. >> Oh, yeah. That's in the summer. >> He's in that process at the moment. >> He was in the summer. It's like that's it. >> Yeah. But, you know, why does Tman's go? I don't want him to go. Um, Watkins, does he have to go? Morgan Rogers. Yeah, okay. I get that one. And then he went like, okay, start over. and now he's so excited about having these youngsters uh coming through and they will go up and down and of course they haven't won in the league at home yet and a lot of other things that will happen but the target is can we go Champions League can we do well in Europe at the moment they're second in the table in the Champions League three wins in three games >> I mean he is at the top of every club >> I mean I certainly like him I certainly like him I mean the problem is is that you judge people by what you know of them and whilst we suggest that he could step into a big football club and I suspect he probably could >> his successes have being recognized his real successes the two opportunities to shine have been at two big clubs PSG and Arsenal and for a variety of reasons and and GM was absolutely right that there are circumstances around that but his successes have been associated with Villa Real Sevilla and potentially Aston Villa because of the scale and size of those football clubs and we don't know categorically if you stick him in he's a brilliant coach a great communicator I think he got a terrible ride at Arsenal about the ridicule about the man in which he spoke try and get English people to speak Spanish to see what about ridiculing goes on there, right? Because that would be real ridicule. Um, and I think he's a top manager, but there is still a doubt in my mind and he and he and he has to leave Aston Villa because the way that the system is set up, he cannot do what his capabilities as a manager will allow others to do because he has to manage a legacy club to be able to achieve it because Aston Villa are never going to get in the room of 7800 million pound turnovers, 900 million pound turnovers like Arsenal, like Liverpool and like Man City under the construct of the rules as they say wrong. So Simon, if if you you you've heard you this many times, give somebody consistency to get the best out of what he's got in his hands. Yeah. >> So if you get you give uh Unayamed consistency plus Europa League teams and it takes him to win the Europa League, not just compete well, but to win the Europa League, isn't that maximizing the potential of his hands? >> Absolutely. No, no argument there. The only difference is as you know different rules apply for people's level of perceived success at the clubs that are the Barcelonas, the Bayern, the Liverpool's, the Arsenals, the Manchester United as well. >> Not just that, he was he hasn't been called to take over Manchester United. >> No, no, no. I I think he's I think he I think he could do it. I think he absolutely could do it. My point is is tragically for Aston Villa fans, the way that the game is structured at this moment in time with PSR, he cannot achieve the things with Aston Villa that his capabilities would have if he was given the same financial opportunities as the big clubs have been given. >> And if I tell you that his main success is to create memories, that is his big target. >> Is he ambitious? >> And he is ambitious. Well, there's then you've got >> game in the in the 10 20 seconds we have left my friend. Who wins a balandor? >> It's between it seems like it's between hurricane and laminal. Uh so killing Mbappe Pia campaign hasn't worked as well as the other twos. But uh I've I've got the impression that Lamin could take it just because not not so much the individual uh there's a world cup as well but he wasn't great in it. Um in the league he was great but is the third thing which is a little bit ambiguous. It's like class whatever it's called. and he he makes us stand out of our seats and clap even if you are a rival of Laminia and that that feeling you got with Messi before and nobody else at the moment does that and I think that wins points and perhaps even the valor >> go home and have a sleep >> I'm going to do that >> after all that traveling
