Man United fan on Carrick: already a dead man walking in a Groundhog Day cycle

The show looks back on Leeds United’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, focusing on United’s defensive and recruitment problems, Bruno Fernandes’ form, and Michael Carrick’s future. The conclusion is that United are stuck in a deep-rooted cycle under their ownership, while Leeds should keep building rather than rush into Europe.

My name is Harry Durham. Right, let's look back on the action from the weekend. leads United hosted Manchester United at Elland Road with it ending 1-1. United winless in their last six Premier League games. Leads, I know we're seven games in, but could they mount a charge towards European football? I mean, it would be absolutely unbelievable. Leads fans, how would you feel about that? I mean, you'd be absolutely buzzing. Get in the comment section just down below. Let us know. Do you think you could get European football by the end of the season? And one of the big questions that I've got today is Michael Carrick under pressure at Manchester United. Joining me to look back on yesterday's game is Jer from the Leads View and Brian from the Simply Red podcast. J one nil down. You come out the blocks in the second half. Are you a bit surprised that you couldn't take more away from that game because there were some real opportunities for leads yesterday? Yeah, I think I was surprised that we didn't come out of the blocks like that in the first half. I thought that the way to beat Manchester United and I was pretty confident going into the game that we would do that was to just get at them, try and run over them as much as you could, try and press them, don't let them get into the game. I felt we kind of sat off them in the first half a little bit and let them play. And then the second half was was far more what we needed to do was limit their space, move the ball quickly, try and get in behind them, push them back. And I think we did that. And then you kind of look at the chances and there's three or four balls that are smashed over the crossbar rather than on target. But yeah, a little bit disappointed that we didn't get the three just because of that. If we'd put two halves together, I think we we probably would have. Right. I'm really pulling my hair out watching Manchester United at the moment. Um it's it's it's just the same old nonsense. There's no entertainment value or factor in watching them. And I don't even support the club. Um so leaky at the back as well. We haven't kept a clean sheet all season in the Premier League. What is it down to though? I think it's pretty obvious. >> Well, at least you at least you've got hair you can pull out, Harry, cuz I obviously haven't got any of that. So, [laughter] I've been biting fingernails and whatnot. Um, look, it's down to a lack of investment. Lando Martin has hit the nail on the head when he spoke about it the other day. We've gone and tried to fix the midfield and we've completely forgotten the defense. Luke Shaw is still there at left back, out injured. Diego, my favorite player as you well know. um trying to do a job left and right which he can't do either. They're still banking on Harry McGuire Martin as himself. I mean I suppose the irony around Lander Martin's comments were if we had done recruitment as we should have done this summer he'd probably be playing for a different football club. So it's a lack of investment. It's a lack of um due care we've started the season. I actually got into it with a with a lead lad last night about the about the game and he was kind of throwing a dig at me saying oh look at big Man United came to Ellen Road and played without a striker. was like, "Mate, we don't have a striker. We've got one. He's cropped." Don't mention Joshua Xerxy cuz he's not a striker. So, there's problems all over the field. I mean, you've got a couple of new lads coming in midfield. They're going to take time to settle. Um, Yuri Tielemans, we know what he's like, but he's kind of like that Christian Erikson signing. He comes in to do a job in the last 20 ideally if things were going well. Um, Carlos Ba looks quite good and Andre Santos is kind of a question mark sign and obviously there's talent there. He made it at Chelsea to the first team. United have looked at him and said, "Look, we we'll take a punt to him, but it question marks sign him, but yeah, I suppose we're just we're finding it hard to show up at the back. Slammens is probably losing confidence in his defense as well. It's not great." Jere mentioned putting two halves together, you get three points. I think I feel exactly the same way. First half we were really good or arguably really good. Um, second half we were poor. So been much bit six to one half the other both of us. >> Jar, it's been um analyzed quite a lot off the back of the game. uh Goodmanson's uh challenge on Andre Santos uh you know putting studs up on the heel. I'm a Fulham fan and Ryan Ceson did exactly the same thing against Hull. I mean we got our first win of the season and we were down to 10 men so I can't really complain. Come on. Um I'm not [snorts] shocked by the lack of consistency but do you really feel like you know you got away with one there? Because in the terms of the laws Goodmanson should have been off the pitch really. I look, I'm obviously I'm biased. I I especially looking at it the first time, I I initially thought the yellow card was just to even up the Fernandez yellow card. I didn't think there was actually anything in it when I first saw it. And then when you see the replay back and then when you slow it down and I genuinely think he's just caught as a player changes direction. He's tried to change with him and his foot's gone down and he's gone down on the back of his ankle. Um Goodwinson's not a cynical player. He's not even a dirty player. He's not borderline physical sometimes. You know, he's he's a footballer. Um, and I just think sometimes players stand on each other. That's just the nature of the game. I I don't think there was anything in it. I don't think he was deliberately trying to step on him. I don't even think he was trying to tackle him. I think he was trying to put his foot down to change direction and came down on top of him. But when you look at it in slow motion, it doesn't look like a great tackle, but there was there was plenty of moments in the game where there was a lack of consistency. I mean, Harry Mcguire grabs Ethan Ampedu around the neck and drags him to the ground. There isn't even a look for a penalty. There's Harry McGuire and Dominic Calvert Leuen in the corner the penalty area that doesn't get looked at either. So like there's there was plenty of it. I think the referee >> to try and give him some of that the credit tried to let that game flow as much as he possibly could and try and keep the cards to a minimum. But it was always going to be fiery. But I I I would hate to start seeing those kind of things given red cards because I I think it's just the nature of the game where players are moving very very quickly and sometimes you catch each other. >> And Bryce the same thing as well. Uh, we're going to get on to Bruno Fernandez and how he's playing, but we know that he's a petulent character or Bruno Fernandez. And I mean, he could be sent off every single game that he plays in for the amount of complaining that he does to the referee. And it's same again with consistency that if you back the referee or going hard on the referee, I know he's the captain, but it's meant to be an automatic yellow card. And judging by Bruno Fernandez's standards and his relationships with referees, he should be getting second yellows constantly. >> Yeah. How will I guess look when you see Ethan Aidu taking BO out early a bit of a win the referees probably not warranting a yellow card is it look about consistency across the pitch I thought ref the shocker yesterday thought Ethan au could have gone arguably for two yellows thought that first challenge he had in was the most guaranteed yellow card I've seen all season doesn't get looked at for a yellow shocking decision goodmanson again I'd agree with you I don't want to see these tackles become red cards but in the modern game and the fact it's gone so soft and all these things get micro analyzed to to death. You wouldn't be surprised if it was a red card. Um I thought Tanaka was lucky. He had a couple of challenges that could have been pulled as well. Um again in their box there was a ball come in from a corner. Harry Mcguire got musled out of it and I think it was Santos got musled out of it. So look there was a bit for both of us. Um I thought leads were lucky to finish with 10. They'll probably argue the same with us about Bruno Fernandez but Bruno's one of those players. Look he's Marmite. He's going to be if he's yours, you love him. If he's not yours, you hate him. I mean, it's the way it is. It's the same with any of those kind of petulent characters across the world in football. When they're playing for you, you absolutely love him. And when they're not playing for you, you absolutely despise him. And that's what he is. And would I change him for the world? No. Would I change how he's playing this season? Absolutely. [laughter] >> That's what I was going to come on to as well. I'm confused by Bruno Fernandez at the moment. I know he's playing at a position he was yesterday playing on the left hand side. Um, it just seems a bit miles off it, Bri. And I can't put my finger on why is he is he is he out of ideas? Is he you know is it a situation where he's done with Manchester United and he could be looking for a move in January because you know he's been loyal to that football club. I mean he could have actually gone and won titles all over Europe and he and he hasn't. Do you think we're starting to see the end of Bruno Fernandez in a Manchester United shirt? Potentially. >> Potentially. I mean it's it's a it's a massive decline from breaking assist records to running around the place and doing not a whole pile but it's >> he just seems to have ideas. >> He does and I suppose it's symptomatic of the team as well. I mean Benjamin Cesco is nowhere to be seen. He's not playing with a striker where shoehorn and lads up front for him to play with. He's playing out of position. He's playing with different midfielders. I think it's just a culmination of the absolute disaster we've had of a season so far and it's not helping him. And then of course you can argue the point he's the one you should be looking at to to start pulling up trees and start dragging the team across the line these games and he's not doing it. So it's concerning. Um but again yeah it's symptomatic of what's going on this season. No one seems to be playing particularly well and it's it's become a disease throughout the squad unfortunately. J. Um, seven games into the season, it's too it's too far away for us to know what could happen for the remainder of the season, but leads have leadeds have started so strong. And you think back to the start of last season, obviously when you got promoted from the um from the championship, and a lot of people were called for Daniel Far's head. A lot of people didn't want the football club. They wanted a change. It was uninspiring. But now you look at it, you've become a real solid outfit, especially this season. And there must be a part of you, and I say it's too early to tell, there must be a part of you that goes, "Do you know what? Leads could get back into Europe this season, even if it's the Conference League. You guys must be so excited by the potential prospects." >> Yeah, it's great to be looking that far up the table and not looking over your shoulder. But but I think there's a slowly slowly catchy monkey level to this. I think we need to be realistic cuz you've seen teams that have gone into the European competitions, especially the lesser two of the European competitions and struggled in the Premier League. Then like last season, we were surrounded by teams that were playing European football that were that were fourth and fifth from bottom. So, I think you've got to be careful what you wish for. Obviously, there's the SCR situation as well where where kind of curbs your spending and leads are still building a squad right now to be an established Premier League side. So what you don't want to do is end up in Europe where you get cut back to 70% of your football revenue that you can spend and all of a sudden you can't strengthen the team and you end up weakening yourself. So I think there's there's steps to it. I'm delighted we are where we are. I I would end the season right now. I'd be very very happy, man. Um but yeah, I think we're growing the right way. We've signed the right kind of players. Daniel Far has evolved as a manager as well because outside of just the promotion last year, we didn't start the season well. You know, there was there was some there was some poor results. the formation wasn't exactly working. Players that were in the side weren't clicking and he changed an awful lot like that that it's we're talking an awful lot about this year as well. Halime against Manchester City, he goes to three at the back and the whole season just turns around because that's what this side has been built for. And since then, since December, Leads have been a phenomenal side, but the it's it's a it's a big step forward to be talking about that for Leads. And I think it's also a big step forward to be talking about being disappointed to get a point against Manchester United as well. I think this side is is growing every single year. I think the recruitment team have done a cracking job. I think Daniel Far is doing a cracking job this season as well. >> Well, especially I think they said last night that you're unchanged starting 11 in the last five games and that's like, you know, a decent core at the same time. Shows how reliable those players can be and you look back on it, you've already played Chelsea and Arsenal as well, which are tough games. Um, but still at the same time, I think he's done an absolutely phenomenal job, especially this season. Can't wait to see come May uh if it's a case of you just surviving or if you're actually going to be getting European football but leads back in Europe would be nice to see as me as the neutral. Uh Bri um I text you last night and I I sit there and watch Manchester United and I identity is a big thing for me. Identity is a huge thing. I mean Fulham we've got Alvaro Albala. We have an identity an identity that we maybe do not want. But when I look at a club like Manchester United and I look at Tenhog, I look at Amarim, I look at Michael Carrick and it's quite scary to say that the last time that Manchester United had some identity was under Aluna Solar and that's scary to say. Um, I don't understand Carrick's in-game management. I don't understand the identity whatsoever and what you're trying to achieve. It just looks like 11 guys that are turning up and just kicking a ball about sometimes. Um, saying that apart from when Bruno Fernandez scored that hattick against Ipsswitch, would you is there a part of you that kind of you never want your football team to lose, right? You never want your football team to lose, but was there a part of you that wanted you to drop points yesterday? You dropped him anyway because it was a draw, but lose to lead so Michael Carrick could go and you bring someone new in. >> No. No. No matter if we were being managed by the worst human being on the planet, I wouldn't want us to lose a tackle at the minor point. So, I think the problem with Michael Carrick is the disappointing side to Michael Carrick's tenure at United is it's already turned and it's probably the earliest I've ever seen it with a Manchester United manager and how calmly it's happened that the fan base are almost resigned to the fact that he's he's already a dead man walking and even people that I respect in their opinions and people online where you're looking going and I'd be one of those people who vehemently always back the manager is part of the things we as a football fan you're supposed to do and you take pride in in your manager, but we all know he's done. We all know he's how it goes. We've seen this episode before. It's like that Netflix series. It's a repeat. He'll be gone. Someone comes in. God knows who. It'll be someone who plays a completely different style of football to what we've bought players to suit. And give it another 18 months and be back again having the same chat. So, it's just it's a horrible Groundhog Day situation. It's what we've been in for the last 12 13 years. And is it going to improve anytime soon? Probably not under the ownership we have. The Glazers have obviously rotted the club. And then we've got backed up with Jim Jim Radcliffe and Inos who >> have been arguably >> I won't say worse for the fan base. For the match >> been a PR disaster. >> They've been a nightmare. Yeah. For the match going fans, they've been horrific. I mean they're they're still attacking the fan base as it is. They're going after memberships, season ticket holders. They've gone penny pinching, getting rid of employees. They've done everything they possibly can to save a quid. So we're in um we're in a horrible situation, unfortunately. >> Right. It's the part of the show where we ask our guests to get something off their chest about the other team. What's been winding them up? Keep it clean. Feel free to interrupt if you want to. J, you're first up. What's been winding you up about Manchester United recently? Go for it. The winging on the football pitch just it's constantly moaning there. And Brian already calculated the kind of player Fernandez is, but it's just it's contagious on the pitch. He starts and then, you know, another player starts to wander across to the referee. Next, there's three of them around the referee. Then there's four, which by the way, you're also supposed to get booked for doing that as well, but there's a stack of them around the referee. And it's everything. It's every little half decision. It's it's like a victim mentality of like everyone's against us and we're getting nothing here and they're all just niggling at the referee. And it's it's so irritating to watch. Like I again from watching it yesterday, the amount of times I was watching it with a group of friends in the Camden in Dublin and the amount of us that were saying is he mo is Fernandez moaning again? Is he in the referee's face again moaning? Does he ever smile and stop moaning? So that's that's the one. And I also think that that's leaked online as well with the fan base and this constant little niggle online as well. I feel like if you put a pound in a piggy bank for every time that Bruno Flanders did that and you look back at at the end of the season, you'd you'd probably you'd probably have like 30 grand in there. >> I'd be retiring soon. I think I'd have me my me nest egg sorted. >> Bri, your response or what's been winding you up about leads. >> Bruno's Bruno's doing his job well done in that case. Um the thing that's winding me up the most about leads. Sadly, my brother is a matchgo leads fan out of complete spite of his older brother. So, what's been winding me up the most is listening to him chirp up all season and thinking they're back in the big time. On the flip side, I do actually hope you get into Europe because the last time you got into Europe, you almost went bust and we didn't see you for 16 years. [laughter] So, yeah, bring it on. Get leads back into Europe ASAP and in the following season, you back down and down. >> I love the level of pettiness. I love [laughter] it. It's great. >> Bri, I thought you were going to say something lovely then. I was like, even though it's a big rivalry, I was Oh, what's Bri going to say? are you mate? You know, we miss him in having European football, but you had to go down in the bus route, didn't you, Brian? Listen, good comedy value. I appreciate that, bro. >> Sorry, J. Apologies, man. >> Thank you to Jer and Brian. This episode of
