Andy Brassell & Kevin Hatchard DEBATE if Real Madrid should sell Mbappe next season?!
Should Real Madrid sell Mbappe? Andy Brassell and Kevin Hatchard debate the pressure, Vinicius and a possible exit
The video debates whether Real Madrid should consider selling Mbappe after renewed criticism, covering his fit with Vinicius, possible destinations and the harsh Madrid media environment. Kevin argues that selling Mbappe would be a mistake, while Andy stresses the impossible standards at Real Madrid and the risk to Florentino's project; both see the Premier League as the likely exit route. They also agree Vinicius's hair-pull red card was correct and dismiss the Mourinho-style siege response.
- The stick Mbappe got after withdrawing from France with injury is over the top, but that is the reality of being a Real Madrid player — His bike ride and Paris Fashion Week appearance were pre-approved and he has faced similar scrutiny before.
- Some of the overreaction is understandable, but Mbappe should have anticipated the backlash — Madrid had just lost the derby to Atletico and played poorly, then came a three-week international break; he knows Real Madrid but could be more emotionally aware.
- A section of the Madrid media will never be happy with Mbappe, but this may not be a Perez-orchestrated campaign to force him out; to last at Real Madrid he must accept the unreasonable standards placed on their players — Bale was demonized and pushed out despite winning European Cups for Madrid, while Mbappe has not yet delivered that kind of legacy, and other off-field stories are piling up.
- Mbappe's goal numbers do not really matter until he wins something for Real Madrid; the fact Madrid have won nothing recently while Barcelona have been strong makes it worse — Individual stats are no substitute for silverware, and Barcelona's consistency in La Liga sharpens the contrast.
- If Real Madrid win nothing this season, selling Mbappe would be difficult for Florentino Perez because the signing is his project and he does not want to look foolish — Perez drove the deal and added Mbappe to a winning team, so he would face blowback if it fails.
- Selling Mbappe would be a mistake; but if he and Vinicius cannot coexist, one of them has to go, and the Vinicius-Arsenal possibility could be revisited — Mbappe is doing his part with goals, and if the partnership fails a sacrifice is needed; Vinicius was strongly linked with Arsenal in the summer and has just signed a long-term deal.
- If Mbappe leaves Real Madrid, the Premier League is the most likely landing spot and Arsenal would be worth going all in for; family affection for Liverpool will not decide it — He will not go to Saudi; his contract is shorter than Vinicius's new deal, he took a pay cut to join Madrid from PSG, and at 28 he is thinking about legacy as well as money, with his own decision to make.
- Mbappe may find it hard to leave Real Madrid without having won anything at his dream club — Madrid is the club he dreamed of, and leaving with no trophies would be difficult to bear.
- Vinicius's hair-pull red card was clear and not a minor issue; Mourinho's media boycott and Madrid's complaints were classic siege mentality — Pulling hair has nothing to do with football and is comparable to spitting; even pro-Madrid papers in Spain struggled to defend the red card.

It's been another fascinating week at Real Madrid. So, it's time for this. [music] IT'S ALL BY you stupid. [screaming] It is of course Mbappe watch and Andy it's even more packed than usual this week and we should start with some of the stick that Mbappe received after he'd withdrawn from the France squad with injury because he did things that were perfectly reasonable. Uh he went on a bike ride that was allowed by Real Madrid. You think that was quite a wholesome thing to do but apparently not. He also went to an event at Paris Fashion Week with his girlfriend, which again had been preapproved, but apparently that wasn't acceptable either. And this isn't a new thing. We've seen this before when he's been recovering from injury and unless he hides away in the dark, he tends to get a fair bit of stick. But this is being a Real Madrid player, Kev, that that's the bottom line. I mean, I think we can think of other clubs where um fans are are similarly unreasonable, especially off the back of a defeat. And the problem is Real Madrid were not just off the back of a defeat. They were off the back of a defeat in the derby against Atletico. Again, I'm going to have to ask you to go a little bit further back in the mind palace to remember this because we have been on a long international break. I think that's been part of the problem. A a defeat, another away defeat, a defeat in which they didn't play well. if we're being completely honest. And that wasn't obscured by any amount of moaning about referees or Kangyan Lee's bad challenge. Um, and it was a defeat in the Derby as well to Atletico who they were really second best to. And the frustration that you feel with that is one thing that you don't have another game for three weeks I think is even more of a problem. So some of the hyperbole and overreaction I think we can understand on on that level. Um with that said I think that there are two issues here. Um one on the club side and one on Kian Mbappé's side. Um on Kian Abbapp's side knowing what Real Madrid is like and he knows what Real Madrid like because um you know he's been interested in the club since he was a child and he's he's intelligent. He's not he's not stupid. Although emotionally I think he could be a bit more um understanding, a bit more adept some sometimes. I I think if if he really thinks about it, he knew what the reaction would be to this. And look, we can say it's ridiculous that that he can't go out. It's ridiculous that um he can't ride a bike for his his new sponsors. I mean, of course, everyone clipped up that bit of Mourinho going, "You can't ski." Correct. Uh you you can't ride a bike. Well, apart from every team that's ever done a preseason who will go on a bike ride together, um normally in the Swiss mountains or or or whatever, in fact, maybe Mbappe can get his sponsors to pay for for that for for the players next year. Who knows? But I think >> the thing is we know from Real Madrid history when these sort of stories start, they kind of don't stop. And what I've been thinking about all week is is is Gareth Bale. Now, it doesn't seem to me likely that Florentino Perez, the president, is doing what he's done with previous players that they don't really want to pay anymore, where they think, okay, let's leak stories about waning professionalism. And it becomes a campaign and the fans get annoyed because I don't think that's what it is. But it is clear that there's a selection of media people in Madrid who are just never going to be happy with Mbappe. Now part of that is the Selta shirt thing as well. So I think it's um a load of things building up recently as as well. But but ultimately if he wants to have a durable future at Real Madrid, well a they have to win some stuff. But B, I think he has to understand the unreasonable standards to which Real Madrid players are held. And you know, you look at Gareth Bale and the way that he was rubbish, demonized, and basically shoved out the door, you know, and this was a guy who literally won European Cups for Real Madrid. >> It was amazing for them. It was amazing for Real Madrid. And and that is not the case for Kian Mbappe just yet, is it? So talking about we can sit here and say, okay, he scored 94 goals in 112 league games, 112 games. That doesn't really matter at this point in time, does it really? >> Well, not until he wins something. Absolutely not. And that that's the backdrop against which all of this is happening because Real Madrid haven't won anything in the last couple of seasons and Barcelona have. So that makes it worse because Barcelona have looked so good and so consistent in La Liga and that hasn't been the case for Real Madrid. It was interesting that Mourinho reacted to all of this criticism for Mbappé by actually standing squarely behind him >> and saying what a pro he was and uh if he wasn't a pro, he couldn't even be on the bench for Real Madrid. Uh and and he will start he will start against Val um against V Royale and he he did of course and and and they won the game. But before we get on to that game, Kevin, they they did win and Yande scored and played well again his first goal for for Real Madrid. Um if we get to the end of this season and Real Madrid win nothing, which I I think there's a at least a reasonable possibility of, right, what do they do with Mbappe? If they've got three seasons of Mbappe and they've not won anything, what do they do? Because at that point, I think you it's difficult because Florentino doesn't want to look stupid. And seeing as he propelled the signing and he added Mbappe to a winning team and it was very much his project, um he's got to be careful because, you know, he's going to get some blowback from this. It's it's not unavo it's it's not avoidable if if this signing doesn't work out. But if they get to the end of this season and they win nothing, do you think they take the decision to sell Mbappe? >> I I think that would be a mistake actually. I still I I mean as you know I'm a huge fan of Mbappe. He is doing his part of the bargain in terms of the goals. No, I totally take the point that the volume of goals is irrelevant because he hasn't managed to lead them to any kind of meaningful silverware. I I just wonder, and we're going to talk about him in a moment, whether the Venius Junior thing can be reexplored because he was obviously very strongly linked with Arsenal in the summer. He signed this long-term contract, but one of them has probably got to go. If it's not working, there has to be some kind of sacrifice because what I think they would do because Diamande they've brought in to play on the right hand side, but he is probably more comfortable in off the left. I think they'll go all in once. I think maybe I think because he is the shiny thing. He is the obvious showbiz move. But you've got to fund that somehow, right? Because Bayern does so easily. >> You know what else Elisa is? He's someone who makes Mbappe better >> and I I I I think that is something that's absolutely key here actually. >> So I think if you're looking at a forward line of Diamande down the left, Mbappe in the middle and OS on the right, maybe that's what they go for because I suppose I'd then throw that back to you. Where's the landing spot for Mbappe? because you're still talking about an enormous amount of money in terms of wages, an enormous amount of money in terms of what you'd have to pay to bring him in. >> Mbappe is not going to suddenly toddle off to Saudi. That's not happening. So, where is the landing spot for Mbappe? >> I I I think it's the Premier League. It's it's got to be. And I I think if we're talking about feasibility, he's got a shorter contract than Venicius has after Venicius has is has just signed again as as well. So I think it it could be interesting. Look, I I think Mbappe at Arsenal, if they're going to go for their their Godfather tilt like they tried to take last summer with with Venicius, why not Mbappe? I I mean I I think it would be amazing if Arsenal were finally to go all in on a start and it were to be Kian Mbappe. Look, I know a lot has been made of his mom's love for Liverpool and all all that sort of stuff. I think we've seen before he will make what he feels is the right play for his career. Um we've got to bear in mind when we talk about money as well, he took a pay cut to go from PSG to Real Madrid in the in in in the first place. But the other thing we have to underline with Mbappe, not only do Real Madrid have to make a decision, he has to make a decision as well. He's 28 in December. You know, we think of him as a kid. He's not he's not anymore. You know, the reason he's got such huge numbers is not just because he's brilliant season after season after season. It's because there have been season after season after season. You know, he's more experienced than a a lot of people realize. And at this point, it's not about the money, is it? It's about legacy. And here is a guy who's always had a very strong sense of who I am, what I'm about, what my brand is. Just as Real Madrid can't go season after season winning anything, I don't think he can either. >> Yeah, but I wonder if he can bear to leave Real Madrid having won absolutely nothing at the club that he made his dream club. We shall see what happens with that. Let's get back to Venicius because he was a big part of this Real Madrid 1-0il win over V Real, but not in the way that he wanted. He was sent off for pulling the hair of an opponent. Later apologized publicly, but his reaction to that red card didn't reflect particularly well on him either. >> No. And it it was he he went pretty spare at it. And uh yeah, it was it was unfortunate. It was uh Nathan Celiba who's whose hair he pulled and it was it was such a strange one because of course there's this tussle between him and Celiba in the middle of the pitch. He goes on and and scores and it's a really good goal and then the goal gets chalked off and you go back and there's the red card and there it's just the sheer incredul. But I mean it's just absolute like stone cold red card. There's there's no doubt about it. I know people have their their views which I find a bit weird to be honest about, you know, whether pulling hair should be a a red card or not. >> There's never a compulsion to pull the hair. Like he could get past him without pulling his hair. It's complete not I've never understood that either. This idea that it's not that big a deal. You know, sometimes that happens. Does it? >> Does it randomly pull somebody's hair? It falls into the same category as spitting really. Is it's what like basketball fans would call a non-OOT play basically, isn't it? Is it's one of those, you know, it's it's not anything to do with the game. It shouldn't be anything to do with with with the game. Um, and obviously Jose Mourinho says, um, right, I'm I'm not doing my press conference afterwards. And he he sort of uh boycots his media duties afterwards. So Eduardo Kovinga comes out and goes, "Oh, we can't understand what happened. uh we can't understand the disallowing of of of that goal and even less the the red card. I I don't think even with all the pro Madrid newspapers that exist in Spain, I don't think any of them really had an argument with it. It was only Real Madrid and it was a a classic Mourinho siege mentality sort of sort of business really. Um, but quite apart from this, I guess going back to the Mbappe thing, um, should they have resigned Venicius? I mean, there's no doubt that there are people at the club who would have been like fairly happy if he'd have gone to Arsenal. Yeah, it's a it's a really good point and I think it's also in tandem with what's happening with Yandandy Amanda and we should have a quick moment about him before we move on because >> we're both massive fans of his. He was terrific for Leipzig last season. >> He's been playing well without the reward, I think, and now does have his first goal for the club. That was the winner against Val. And it was beautifully taken. >> It was. And I think really what I think is most impressive about um Diamande and going back to what you need to be a successful Real Madrid player, I think you need to have um the ego and the swagger to be a star player, but you have to submit to the institution as well and realize that Real Madrid is bigger than anyone there. That was the struggle that Cristiano Ronaldo had at times at Real Madrid. um not the only player, something that Raul was able to do very very well and it's something that Yandai when you think you know to to arrive as a teenager and be able to deal with that pressure deal with the fee like you you would have to at any other club and then deal with the particular nature of Real Madrid and all this other stuff that's going on around him. I mean he's just such a quick learner. I think that's what's so impressive about him. You know, we talked about it before. He was a gamble really when Leipzig spent all that money um buying him from Lean because he was relatively inexperienced at the time and he just picks up his duties and obligations so so quickly and that's why he's adapted to Real Madrid.
