"KEEP VAR OUT OF THE EFL!" Adam Catterall & Carlton Cole REACT to Jarrod Bowen's LATE Penalty Miss!
talkSPORT on West Ham's draw with QPR: keep VAR out of the EFL, debate Bowen's penalty miss and West Ham's issues
The show reacts to West Ham's Championship draw with QPR, criticising the penalty decisions and firmly opposing VAR in the EFL. It also debates whether elite forwards should be reliable from the spot, discusses Nuno's selection and West Ham's slow starts, and covers the club's tribute to Ludo plus their defensive concerns.
- Both penalty decisions should not have stood; the referee was poor, made an error and then tried to even things up. — They felt the referee misread a challenge where the defender touched the ball, and his overall handling set a bad tone.
- VAR should be kept out of the EFL Championship; human error is preferable. — VAR drains the emotion from goals and decisions, and fans would rather get angry and forgive a human call than wait five minutes for someone miles away.
- QPR deserve credit for their defending and organisation, and West Ham must learn how to break down that kind of low block. — QPR sat deep, defended for their lives and made it a grind; teams like them treat a game at London Stadium as a cup final.
- West Ham's tribute to Ludo was classy and showed the attention to detail the club has been missing. — The club had former teammates form a guard of honour, with Ludo's son and Mark Noble laying a floral tribute, plus the lit-up stadium and fans spelling his name.
- An elite striker should be able to hit the top corner from a stationary ball at least nine times out of ten. — The ball and the goal are not moving, so a top professional should have the technique to do it.
- He disagrees: penalties are not automatic, the keeper is moving and applying pressure, and even top forwards cannot guarantee the corner every time. — Pressure, the keeper's movement and individual technique mean spot-kicks are not a simple stationary exercise; six or seven out of ten is more realistic.
- Nuno was wrong to start an unfit, just-back-from-injury midfielder, which broke West Ham's midfield fluency and wasted the first half. — The player had been out for a long time, looked off the pace and misplaced passes; West Ham's established midfield unit had been working better.
- West Ham are mistaking patience for energy and are not setting the tone with intensity in the first 10 to 15 minutes. — They start too slowly and only kick into gear after a setback; they need to match the opponent's work rate first and let talent tell later.
- Bowen should not automatically be the penalty taker; another West Ham player with a better record at Celtic should take them, and being captain is not a reason. — Bowen hit his penalty straight at the keeper, who seemed to know where it was going, while the other player scored 16 of 19 penalties for Celtic.
- West Ham's defence is not solid enough; they must fix the back line and their clean-sheet foundation before thinking they can simply outscore teams. — They have conceded too many goals this season, continuing a problem from last season, and cannot rely on winning high-scoring games.

How are you? >> I'm okay. How are you? >> I'm all right, mate. I'm all right. You get animated watching. You like what? Honestly, watching football, especially watching West Ham, we call it is like being stood next to Diego Simeone. Very you're very animated, aren't you? One minute you >> happens when you care about something. >> One minute you're giving it to someone, next minute you're you're rugging him and kissing him. You're all in, mate, aren't you? You're all in. >> Yeah. Listen, mate. I lead with my heart. I lead with my heart. And um >> it's inside you in it, mate. that the blood was pumping tonight. >> Yeah. So that's why I don't really like going games. If you see me at at a game and I'm in a box and then like we've got a nice little um we've got a little courseway. I'm up and down. I've the amount of steps I probably do >> cuz I'm in the game as well like cuz I want the boys to do so well and get frustrated. Then these emotions come back to you like when you was playing but I wasn't as animated. I really cared about this. Now I can show it through my body. Like I can do that. But when you're on the pitch, you got to >> Yeah. >> Just got to be >> added frustration because you're not on the pitch and you can't do it. >> You can't do nothing about it. So I don't know if I'd be a good manager [laughter] because I showed they tell you when you're over the FA when you're doing your your badges. >> Yeah. >> They tell you always restraint to show how you're um thinking, >> right? >> Kind of porker. >> Yeah. So you got to like you can't be too animated. You can't show like >> Yeah. None of that tonight from >> Yeah. cuz you can't show weakness. I think I showed a lot of weakness tonight in the studio. [laughter] >> So, mate, listen. It was um h how can I put it? >> It's a frustrating game. >> Well, you started slow the second half. You were all over them. >> Yeah, but that's our problem. Like, we don't need to be starting slow anymore. Like, we know the league now. >> Yeah. >> We got to go at them. And listen, to be honest, the penalty um shout was wrong. >> I think both penalties weren't penalties. >> Yeah. So the ref the referee's obviously evening out something that the mistake that he made first. He set the pace, didn't he? And he was bad. It was a bad You got to see that he didn't touch he touched the ball there. >> You know what I mean? >> And this is where other people we had someone in the in the room the green room just there talking about >> um bringing V to Championship. >> No. >> And I'm like, no, I'd rather it be an error from the referee and we can get on with it. At least it's we know it's an error. But then he'll probably go in halfime and look at it and he'll be go, "Oh, do you know what? Got that one wrong." And then they come back. Yeah, that's what used to happen. Then they'll come back and then they'll probably give us something that's in our favor. That's how it goes. So, and I think they should have the second attempt actually. They should have had they should have had another penalty really before in the second half. >> Got away with that one. >> Start the second half. Yeah. >> Start the second half. They should have got another They should have got another penalty. >> Um but he didn't give it. So it did work in our favor in that way aspect. And then we got another penalty late down the line and we didn't. >> So it's a game of it's a game of penalties. [laughter] >> Listen, I I agree with you. Keep V out of the EFL. We don't want it because we we've discussed this on the show on many many occasions. V has absolutely distilled and diluted the emotion connected to the game. Fans are going there for a bit of a release. They want to look to the linesman, see that flag's down, and they want to lose themselves in moments of goals. That's not necessarily always the case now with V in the Premier League. And obviously I personally, this is just me speaking as a fan of a club in the Championship. I would rather argue, get angry, forgive >> a human decision, referee decision, a linesman decision that goes against my team than sit there for 5 minutes waiting for somebody in a computer miles away to get something right. Not interested. That's not the game that I fell in love with. So keep V out the championship regarding your team's performance tonight. >> Listen, you started slow. You collected it in the second half, but you've got to give a little bit of credit to QPR because listen, they can defend, mate. Mate, >> they are organized, >> mate. I saw Steve Bald on their bench, mate. So, [laughter] >> he's calling off sides and stepping up from the sideline. >> I saw Steve Bald on their bench and I was looking, oh, maybe that's where they get their structure from. And their manager understands good defense. Good shape. >> Good shape. And they they were there to frustrate us obviously. And then they they've obviously got a lucky pen >> in it. And um that kind of shapes the way the game's going to go. Then they sit back. So it wasn't an end to end type of game, but at the same time, we got to learn how to to destroy these type of teams. I remember when I was in the in the championship with some of my teammates, obviously, and we had the probably the better players in the whole league. >> Yeah. >> Um >> who was your bit of magic in that team? Because Jaba Bowen's obviously the bit of magic in this team, isn't it? >> Yeah. I think I was the magic. >> You were the magic. [laughter] >> The little side stepper. >> No, no. Honestly, no. It was um >> You're someone who can see a pass. someone could just lock a door and create that. >> No, we get No, we had players that could that could grind out a game and then we knew that we had to work as hard as the the team in front of us and then our and then our >> our qualities will shine through afterwards. But on this scenario tonight, it was the same type of thing. I saw I just it's reminiscent of the days when we was down there when these some of these teams they they defend like their life depends on it and cuz they're playing a big team and they can have a big upset and it give them confidence going forward cuz this is like a for some teams this is a the game of the season playing at London Stadium under the lights. >> Yeah, of course. And if you won nil up, you defend it. >> Exactly. And um but we've got to recognize that quite early and just say you know what we know these are the type of games that we have to win and it's all set structure but we I remember we was in the championship we we we scored we we scored a load of goals but it was hard to grind out um results all the time. I think we had about five or six nil nils. It was it was really hard. But it weren't easy and this is what we got to def um play against and the defense defense always like defense we attack all the time every game. It's really hard to sus out. I don't remember. We had a few good players that could unlock defenses but it is hard even if you do have those players. >> James, have you been at the game tonight mate? >> No, I've got the kids so I watched it on TV. Cat man, sorry man, but um I want to bring it back to that. Look, Coley um mate, you're an absolute legend. So it's an absolute honor to um and you were the magic mate. I've sung your [laughter] song a million times for you. >> Cat man, you you Catman, you you you basically bring it back to boxing terms, mate. You got to take it on the chin. And that that that decision from that ref for that first pen, mate, that is absolute clown show for a minute. But you know, take it on the chin. Let's move past that. We were slow and ponderous to get to it. But what I will say about QPR is like, yeah, 10 out of 10 on defense and everything, but how much did they spend playing us tonight? Like look at their players. They were limping around. We were all over them the last 20 minutes, 25 minutes of the game. Yeah. And like we we should have won it with a pen. All right. Unlucky. We didn't have Coi there to bang it in. But what what I will say is that I would like how much is it costing teams to play against us. So they're like FA Cup final because they get to play under the lights, right? What they should be doing is thinking in one terms, right? This ain't our race. It really ain't. So, so why don't we actually think about like it's we're playing derby midweek. Let's make sure we got something left, >> mate. You want to rested? You want lads to come and rest at your gaff? >> I'll tell you what it is. >> You've just been on international break for two weeks. They're chomping at the bit, mate. >> No, it's it's actually I know what you I know what you're getting at. >> NO, HE WANTS A FREE RIDE. >> NO, NO, NO, NO. I I know what he's getting at. >> James and you are together on this. You just want a free ride back to the prem. That's what it is. >> Listen, pal. Listen. I'm going to [laughter] Listen, mate. Listen, listen. I'm I'm going to tell I'm going to put like >> Let me tell you where Blackburn come, we're going to kick out, man. >> No, no, I'm agreeing with you. Let me [laughter] Let me just finish. Let me land. Yeah. So, basically teams like this definitely they want to they're sizing themselves up against the best in the league. So-called best in the league, right? >> So, this is advertisement for them. It's on it's it's on TV. >> James, look, we started here now. >> No, it's true. It's on TV. It's under the lights. It's a time to shine. They want to be the big even if they don't get anywhere near the playoffs or they this is their game to shine because they're selling themselves. They want to be they want better for themselves. They want us to buy them. Do you know what I mean? That's what this is what they're doing. So they [laughter] they they try an extra 15 20% harder than they usually would on a Saturday. >> Yeah. But James just come on here and say, "Listen, you're not going to win this game. You know what I mean? Leave all your stars at on play against Derby." >> I know. I James overshooting it. He's overshooting it. [laughter] Yeah, >> he's overshooting it. But I'm just saying these are the type of games that when we should have won this anyway and then it's a relief for everybody. Do you know what I mean? And then yeah, they are spending their whole look some of the some of the defending today was amazing from from from QPR. So you got to give them that. But >> we know how good we should be and they know we should be better. Yeah. At the same time, they're always going to defend with their their heart and their soul because they just want to not lose the game because it it gives them credit in the bank. >> Chris Chris, have you been to the game, mate? >> Yeah, I have. I can't get over my fellow West Ham supporter James. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> From his armchair, >> mate. He wants a freebie. >> Thinking that >> he wants a freebie, mate. >> Thinking he thinks QR should roll over and GET THE >> I AGREE WITH HIM. I AGREE WITH HIM. [laughter] IT'S NEVER GOING TO BE. That's That's He's No, he's living in Cuckoo Land, but obviously that's not going to happen. >> I think he was having banter. >> He's having banter, man. >> Go on. Go on, Chris. What do you want to say about Chris? >> Well, I want to say credit to QPR. I mean, >> they bosed us the first half >> and they were they they were playing one-touch football and I know, you know, the fans got to be on the side, you know, on the team because we were very very slow. >> Yeah. But I would say thank God we done a V because you wouldn't have had that last 25 minutes in the Premiership. >> It would have been a nil nil bore draw and then >> you know for that piece. So so that's why I liked it. I just wanted to say credit to the club for the tribute they paid to Ludo today. >> Yeah. >> Just Chris talk us through that man. >> Talk us through it because that was quite a big moment right right at the start there. Well, they actually had at the start they brought out Kevin Keane who played with him and Jimmy Walker who Carton will know. Yeah. Um was was coached by Ludo when when Ludo came back to the club. >> Yes. >> And they talked about him and they had a lot of his ex- teammates out as like a guard of honor when basically Ludo's son and Mark Noble came out to I think lay a floral tribute against the uh uh the jersey of him. But I just thought, you know, the club has had a lot of criticism over the last five years for a lack of class. Yeah. >> And I thought today that was class. >> There's there's a couple of things that I've I've seen today. Obviously, the stadium looked incredible, mate, with the the way that they lit up the with obviously with the fans spelling his name out and various things like that. I thought it looks absolutely superb. But there was a social media video that went around a little earlier on with the piano play and what have you, mate. I thought, "Wow." >> Yeah. >> The the effort that has gone into that was absolutely superb >> and they they played that, you know, literally 10 minutes before the kickoff. I mean, I know that been on the West Ham website, but I just say for a club that's >> had they've had a lot of criticism. Well, I've been there when I've been hearing it. And this is what we want. This is what the attention to detail is what the fans want. >> Yeah. Yeah. the attention to detail and and that's what we're getting now because listen I'm behind the scenes. You know what I see and everything and >> now I there's a there's a there's a feelood factor around the club on knowing things are going to be getting addressed. >> Yeah. And um and and and even last season this was happening. So this has happened but but people would stop it and get in the way of it because for one reason or the other PR or whatever it is but we used to we used to try our best to get things done but now the class of the people underneath are coming shining to the four cuz they know that what we've been missing all this time. >> Yeah. And like the club are going to change the club badge. They're going to get rid of the word London. Right. Because you know I' I'd rather it go back to it's West Ham. Every West Ham fan knows it's in London. They don't need that. >> It's like It's like me putting a title on my chest and say saying Colton. [laughter] Put >> your name on. >> Put my name on my chest. Colton. Yeah, Colton was here. [laughter] >> No, no, you just you just have to put a tattoo that says always believe in your soul. >> There he is. There he is. >> No, no. I No. Honestly, thank you for that. I think the the the people at West Ham will appreciate that. You can see the effort that they're actually putting in behind the scenes to try and get to try and get the Yeah. But to try and get the fans back together. It's the fans club and that's what we're going forward with from now on. And uh all we need to do is just get him out on the pitch and beat QPR on a on a Friday night [laughter] and then everything. But today was class for Ludo. Ludo McCloskco is a top top fella. If you knew him, you'll understand. He leads with his heart. And um for us to lose him with with the way we did um was it's not nice. Um and we've gota we've got to do something about this cancer stuff. I I hate it cuz we're losing good people through it and people that don't deserve it. >> And um >> but tonight >> but tonight was a massive massive um >> well just for I was just going to say for his family because obviously they they'll be feeling all sorts for for his family >> to see what he meant to a large group of people. when you when you have your own song and the song >> is an it makes you feel when you when when people sing it you understand it. It just makes the your hairs stand up the back of your neck. >> We used to sing it at Blackburn because he won us the league because of that game at the end of the season. >> He sang it as well. >> Yeah. Because he at the end of the season if you remember when Blackburn won the league, >> Man United played West Ham, >> United battered West Ham that day >> and Ludo had the game of his life >> and he made sure that it was a draw and United didn't win. So we got we ended up getting the title. So, we used to sing his song as well. >> He's a He's a top man. So important to so many people. We love him. Lud McCloskco, we miss you and you'll always be remembered. >> Here's a question for you. Should all strikers be awesome at penalties? >> Oh, here we go. He's just making up questions now. >> No, no, no. Listen, the ball's stationary. >> The nets aren't going to move, man. >> What do you mean? >> Put the ball in the net. >> So, you think it's that easy? Yeah. You think it's that easy? >> For an elite striker, >> so what? What do you mean? So what? >> Mate, it's still one v one, isn't it? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. So it's just >> And it's it's heavily weighted in the striker's favor. >> No, I wouldn't say that. It is. I say it's 50/50. >> No, it's not. You're kicking it. >> Yeah. >> You're kicking it. You know where it's going. >> Well, you're supposed to know where it's going. Yeah, >> but sometimes pick >> when Okay, you pick your spot. Yeah. >> Boot it. >> Yeah, but >> send the gies the wrong way. >> So if he guesses where you're going, so he's still got he's got a way to >> Right. We Listen, you're an elite striker. Yeah. Elite strikers should be able to put it right in the top corner. >> What? What do you mean? What? The ball is still >> So there's no room for mistake. >> You might lift it up over the bar. >> You're elite. >> Oh, come on, man. >> Come on, man. >> In front of everybody. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> You Exactly. The ball is stationary. The nets are stationary. Yeah. >> Put it in the top corner. >> Doesn't work like that. >> What do you mean >> doesn't work like this? Elements to [laughter] >> What do you mean? >> I'm not having it. >> All right. All right. So you're telling me so basically you're saying like let's look at a boxing terms, right? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> So I'm telling you >> you're an elite boxer. Yeah. You're an elite boxer. >> I'm Anthony Joshua, right? >> Yeah. You're an elite boxer. >> Gizer doesn't move. I can knock him out. >> Huh? >> If [laughter] if the target No. If the target is stationary, I can hit the target. >> No, but I'm not saying it. He's moving. He's bobbing and weaving. >> No, no, no, no, no, no, NO, NO. THE NETS ARE NOT BOBBING AND WEAVING. >> LET ME SET LET ME SET the scenario. Why are you setting? Why did you set the scenario? I'm asking you a question. I'm setting this >> because YOUR MAN'S MISSED FOUR PENALTIES, MATE. That's why I'm setting the scenario. >> Listen to this. Right. So, let's look at it boxing terms, right? >> Yeah. >> So, you're you're bobbing and weaving cuz you're you're also an elite athlete as well in the ring. >> Yeah. Yeah. Two elite athletes. Bobbing and weaving. Yeah. >> And you can punch, I can punch. >> Yeah. >> So, that's like it's 50/50 there. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. I go to punch you. You and I miss you. >> Does that mean I'm not elite? >> No. No. Hang on a minute. You changed it. You changed what I've asked you. >> No, no, no. Because the the goalkeeper's elite, too, by the way. >> The penalty situation is a very unique situation. >> Yeah, but the goalkeeper. >> Nobody's bobbing and weaving. The goal >> Yes, the goalkeeper is. >> Listen, the goalkeeper's bobbing and weaving, BUT HE'S LIKE THAT. HE'S TRYING TO put you off. That's what's happening. >> The nets are not moving. >> It doesn't matter. He >> Listen, the ring's The ring's not moving. >> The ring's not moving. There's someone in it moving. >> Should a striker be able to hit the top corner of the goal? >> Not when No, cuz it doesn't work like that. There's elements to things that happen. the weight of the ball. The >> What do you mean the weight of the ball? >> There's loads of other stuff that could happen, mate. Listen, >> should Should should the s
