Dyche on Wirtz: one big moment can turn it around

The show first debates Florian Wirtz's struggles at Liverpool, with Jason Cundy questioning his personality and Sean Dyche arguing it is more about confidence and that one big performance could change everything. It then turns to Everton: the Friedkin Group's possible sale, the lack of communication with David Moyes, what makes a good owner, Dyche's points-deduction experience and Everton's rebuild. The takeaway is that Everton need patience and Moyes has them on the right track, though the ownership situation remains uncertain.

Ally McCoist and Sean Dyche discuss Florian Wirtz's poor form for Liverpool & Laura Kirk-Francis joined to discuss Friedkin Group selling their shares in Everton. And the question, will Florian Virtska do or us is strong as the Premier League's greatest of our flobs? That's a bit strong. The Germany is having a struggle, there's no doubt about it. Five goals and four assists in 39 games for Liverpool despite his £116 million price tag. Jason Cundey had some pretty damning words for the winger has won the physicality to the person. You know, when I say personality, I mean, give me the ball. I want to influence the game. I want to have sometimes players you can give the ball away but you're showing you want the ball. You want to show what I've got? Yeah. I don't see any of that. He's having a tough time. He looks scared. Looks frightened. Not sure he looks frightened. He's having a tough time, Jase. He's certainly having a tough time. Yeah. Certainly no lack of effort. He's run about track, fine wee pockets. He looks a wee bit like a confidence. Yeah, of course. And that comes with, well, you've got to turn around yourself. But it can turn around yourself. Correct. But it can take one moment, one big moment, one productive performance. And you're off and running. Yeah, yeah. And you're off and running. Laura's back with us. Laura, are you going to cause a riot again in this studio? I mean, what's going on with you this morning? No, no, no more. No more clips today unless you want them of course. Yeah, we'll have to invoice you for the advertising we're doing here at TalkSport No, so to Everton whose owners the Friedkin Group are exploring a potential sale of the club they announced last week. This is only two years after they bought it for 400 million pounds and they've been absent owners, I think it's fair to say. They also own Roma who are currently third in the Italian League and their chairman has never attended an Everton game and even more startlingly never spoken to manager David Moyes since he arrived back at the club in January 2020. Never spoken to him? No, David Moyes says he's never spoken to the owner but they are now looking to put Everton up for sale. Inevitably that's going to cause some disruption. Now, Sean, you were at Everton 2022-2023. In terms of building under a club that's going through constant ownership changes issues, how difficult is it to keep the players focused and ultimately restore Everton to where they were back in. You have to go back to 2004-2005, last time they were fourth. So it's been difficult for years. First things first, you can read into the idea of not having spoken to the But you can read that On the other hand You could argue That they just let you Get on with it So that can be A bit of freedom Just get on with it Oh take your point But surely You would think I'm here I'm taking over a club I'm going to let you go on With the A beer's to lock. A coffee, surely. No, I get what you mean. Yeah, sorry. I was implied a bit deeper now because if you're chairman, you're probably going to get a little bit more than that. But I do get your point. There should be some form of contact, whether they're being exaggerated in that moment as if there's none at all i'll be surprised there's literally no like you say even just say welcome to the club i hope you go well all i'm suggesting on one hand it's yes the lines of communication with the powers that be but in the other hand maybe it's a case of you crack on which is a good position because that's getting harder to get the freedom to doubt. I saw Moyes Reilly recently at the Nordoff Robbins dinner and we've not had a quick chat with him. He seems in a decent place. I don't know what the business plan was. I think I remember correctly when I was there because that was a changeover when I got cruelly sacked, obviously. No, when I was out, I think the idea was to build it for the future. But who knows, you know, the shifting sands of football ownership, I suppose, because I've got the stadium done. Everyone tells me I haven't been up to watch a game there, but everyone tells me it's fantastic. I did manage a game there that went well, 3-0 loss. But, brilliant news. Good stadium though. I would suggest, yeah fantastic. It's steep stands as well. Yeah so what you know I don't know look these guys are billionaires and people always someone told me this about the loophole ownership to give all the listeners a sort of bigger picture view in our world right because we think football is the BL Lendl. In their world, their football clubs are like 5 % of It's their bigger picture of business around the world, some of these guys. Do you get what I mean? So their importance is not the same as our importance. Sean, what would a perfect owner be for any manager effectively? One that's in the background supportive but let you go on your job absolutely yeah I mean look we could flood from Flander but it's as simple as that yeah the best ownership I mean I did have it at Burnley to be fair they were they were hard to work with financially because they wanted to protect the future of the club and when we built the future of the club we put a load of money in the back they still wouldn't release it but the alignment the truth in this story was always you know don't break ranks we go through through the ownership through the the board of directors through the technical director into me and down into the club every message was going out very very similar the odd little looseness but yeah and the fans know lines of communication with dead clear i know that's not easy because burnley was a particular modeler and quite relatively a small club in a small town i know i appreciate it's not so easy if you're at manu and you've got people everywhere although i think sir jim has stripped it all down hasn't he staff was but I just think that's the key to it you know sometimes bring a manager in right to handle the news so go let him handle it let you know let him send the message now he should have lines of communication for what is the message and as long as the goalposts don't keep shifting i think most fans would take that you know what i mean and i think the ideal model is that of course there isn't many like that now um just because of the way football's changed. Ownership's changed, technical directors or sporting directors, fans want them to speak as well sometimes. Why isn't the owner speaking? And sometimes you're going, well why do they need to let the manager you do that? I certainly have it and I mean the only good thing, it was hard because I was answering to like everything but at least I could at least answer to everything, you know get gender up and it's not all mixed messages. When you were there Sean also you were a manager at the time when Everton were docked points. I was. So there is precedent for this happening. Twice. Yeah exactly. Fun time huh? Good time, so how did that affect the team when that happened? No it was suggesting earlier the thing about galvanising, I mean I know it's a more extreme case although it's still a big if, is the Man City thing. It was a bigger version but of the same thing you know and for us I just smoked to the place dead dead simply. I know Young is coming on, Young he was there obviously and you know I just said look lads that was the league table and then I put a league table up with the points off and i went that's it that's the reality you know i said look we all we all want our contracts we all want you know we've got wanted moves here we want a new contract we all wanted that so it's double payback time now not just be for your own pride and your honor of the club, but also because we all have money out of it, so let's crack on. You know, no, I just stripped it all back, really. And the lads were terrific, by the way, because it's like them words sound, you know, like a bit brave art and all that, but it's not really because it could go wrong. Well, I'm imagining that situation, the worst thing you can do is start feeling sorry for yourself. Yeah, exactly. What's the point? I could have started crying it in and going oh what do you want me to do now? And the players could have they didn't and the fans didn't to be fair The fans are, you know Odd Bunch had a very extreme that the fans are ever when they're with you and they're on you i they will back you to the hill and when they go against you it's hard work really hard where it's heavy lifting yeah but they were terrific so you know i'd never knock that and we went through well we sort of collected but that did almost like right everyone just went right come on then let's crack on yeah it was a marvellous thing was hard work but that period when everyone just galvanized was was fantastic period i thought magic yeah and um would you agree that everton are a bit of a sleeping giant uh they've been uh they're topping something called the english misery league which statisticians have pulled together standings for the leg no mean achievement each team that's why they got me yeah this is essentially how long a team has gone uh achieving nothing no trophies lifted and no promotions um but everton just feels like that they just should be doing better than 13th 15th no no no because it takes time to get to that level again you know after after where it was and how far it had been stripped back you know he i don't think do that in one window and i think moise is doing a great job you know we we kind of leveled it out and made it safe again then the new owners should come in they have spent a few quid by the way i mean i know they missed out i know the the last window seemed to be here all going off you know it didn't quite happen from but they have if you look at the numbers they have put some money in i still think you know i remember saying that forrest the ownership there to become a bona fide top eight even a top 10 premier league club season after season that's the first challenge forrest has still got to do that yeah you know I mean season after season when you're almost like a banker to be in the top 10 then I think you start going right now we should be pushing but I think Everton are on their way there I just think last season was about right for me where they ended up they had a great start you know what I mean yeah and I think Mojie this season beat and you know can you build on it well let's see struggling a bit with strikers and all that how many they've got that Barry scoring but you go to me if he gets injured and all that but you go to me it's a building process so is it in the right lines, I think it is. Apart from this ownership change, we don't know about that. But Moyes has got them on the right viewpoint, I think. And over the next year or two, then at Agrivia, then you go, right, come on then, we want to start pushing right the way up towards the top not necessarily the top but you know what i mean the top certainly the top's having a rate i would suggest okay mate laura you back tomorrow morning i am indeed kelly or a frenchman yeah uh what time is it uh i don't know why i went french have you absolutely no idea have you no idea that's exactly what that was fantastic apart from your second last segment when you put him and i away i really really enjoyed that uh you're back tomorrow for 5 a .m we're looking forward to that coming up we're going to turn our attention manchester night here and just what carrick has to do to get a response from his side against Atletico Madrid which will be a tough one tonight and it's live on
