"THERE'S NOTHING FAIR!" Andy Townsend STUNNED by Everton fan DEFENDING Man City after 115 CHARGES!
Andy Townsend and an Everton fan clash over Man City charges and FFP fairness
The show discusses Manchester City's performance against Liverpool, the uncertainty around City's financial charges, and whether FFP is fair. Everton fan Phil defends City by arguing that the top six have long monopolised money and Champions League places, while financial rules make it hard for emerging clubs like Newcastle and Aston Villa to catch up. The hosts praise City's football but also accept that the current rules are unfair on non-elite clubs.
- Man City's performance and goals must be praised, and the off-field charges should not stop us analysing what happened on the pitch — City were on another level in the second half, especially after Liverpool went down to 10, and the goals were outstanding
- Liverpool started the better side but never looked convincing enough to score — They had the early shot advantage but there was no real sense that a goal was coming
- Every point City pick up now matters because the eventual punishment is unknown — Nobody knows what the sanction will be, so City still need to bank points regardless
- Liverpool and the top six are hypocritical to complain about City ruining football — The top six have long monopolised the money and Champions League places, and only object when someone else joins the top table
- FFP is not fair and makes it almost impossible for non-elite clubs to win the Premier League — He argues that Everton, Brentford and Brighton will not win it, and treats Leicester's title as a pre-FFP exception
- Newcastle and Aston Villa are also blocked by financial rules from challenging the elite — Newcastle have the richest owners but still have to sell their best players, while Villa have had to sell to balance the books
- It is unfair to call Leicester's title a fluke — It was one of the biggest shocks he can remember, but they actually did it and it was brilliant
- We are unlikely to see another Leicester-style title in the next 20 or 30 years — Generally the teams with the most money win the big trophies
- For clubs outside the top six, the realistic route to a trophy is a cup, and the rules are unfair on emerging sides like Newcastle and Villa — Newcastle have had their hands tied, and Villa had to sell a whole spine of the team

Okay but Linda's given us a bit of stick you and I because she said we We shouldn't be praising Manchester City. Got to praise their goals. Got to praise them, man. In the second half... You got to praise the goals and what your eyes... Listen, all the stuff that's gone on, that's all coming. Don't worry about that. We all know what's... We have got to comment on what we watched in the game and that's exactly what we'll do as well. We've obviously got opinions on other stuff but you've got to comment on what you're watching on the pitch and City, second half in particular when Liverpool went down to 10 men were different class and the quality of goal was outstanding. So City end of the weekend, top of the table with sick wins for six but sadly the world is still focused on what's going to happen with City's impending appeal for the 114 charges. Okay, now you were at the game yesterday Andy, I want to ask you before we talk about the game itself, build up, atmosphere, you thought it might have been a little bit... I thought it was going to be, I thought it was going to be a hotter kind of atmosphere perhaps before the game. I've seen some, listen on some Champions League nights at Anfield, I've seen some incredible sort fever pitch stuff. Me too, me too. Now of course there were loads of people shouting out and there were various chants going up as you can well imagine, some banners we saw them in the cop as well but I didn't think all the build up was talking about this toxic atmosphere. I didn't think it got to those sort of levels. That has to be a good thing. And I think the Liverpool fans were concentrating on their team. Yeah. And they started well, by the way. I thought the first 10 minutes had a better team. Do you know what I thought? Yeah, sure do I. I actually thought Liverpool... I looked at the ratio of shots initially in the game. I think it was Liverpool Liverpool 5, City 1 and I thought Liverpool started the better of the two sides but you know that way Andy, it was never convincing that they were going to score. Just at the top of the field, just carving out those chances didn't you're right you didn't get the vibe that a goal was coming it was imminent you just didn't even despite that positive start where they were on the front foot I always think Liverpool whenever I go to Anfield and watch a Liverpool team when they're really swarming all over you, right? I mean that Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool when they were like that were just so brilliant to watch. Absolutely incredible. So good to watch. And the way that they just went about it. He was some player when he had Bobby Firmino. Brilliant. Wasn't he? What a great footballer. What a smart footballer. Intelligent, talented boy. You use the word absolute spawn. He was a clever, intelligent Certainly, he really was And he was the absolute perfect partner foil for the other two Absolutely Who had all the pace and all the quality Well as you can imagine Andy as the number to call. There's been plenty of action this morning. Everybody want to get in touch this morning. It obviously tells you how you feel about that Liverpool City game. So we're going to head to the phone lines right now. Kem is a United fan. Good morning, Kem. Morning, Kem. we're in good form Kem now we've got you down as a United fan do you want to talk about United or do you want to talk about Liverpool City oh they're both really you carry on then yeah it's more to the more to the city slant but I'll just mention United briefly which you know I haven't got much to say about that it's just Paul don't know where he's going to end up Carrick I don't think he's going to be there for another in three months to be fair he's just not he's not doing it he's not giving confidence to the fans it's just it's poor that's all I can say but on the city front I'm just hearing all the rumbles of you know the game's not worth the game's not they're not it doesn't matter this is going to sort of resonate right through the season it will carry on and the cheat chance And that's going to carry on. But my point is that, you know, those points for City are absolutely crucial because we don't know what they're going to get dished out. And I'm just being a sort of A football fan And it happens to any of our teams Whoever you support You'd just be on the same point The fact that we don't know City players don't know what they're going to get Nobody knows what they're going to get So the point is it's like those points are absolutely relevant to the city regardless if it's a one if it's if it's a draw and they get one point they need them points regardless at the end and like i say nobody knows what they're going to be dished out look you make some valid points it's the empty kind of feeling out of course it's the it's the it's the it's this emptiness i think that most most honest to good football fans feel in their stomach uh particularly those that aren't that aren't city fans um and i'm sure even a lot of city fans too are probably waking up today and thinking well look a great performance yeah some great goals some really good good players out They said, but we know what's coming or there's something looming around the corner that's going to alter the very course of our existence. So I don't know. It's all the unknowns and all the We had lots of texts this morning saying that when they were found guilty of the charges should the punishment have not been set quicker and then the appeal process takes place. But is that pre-judging everything too much? I don't know. All right, again. I think... We're not legal eagles, you know, absolutely not. And I'll tell you one thing I do know about the... Anyone who's been involved in a legal case, right, and I have. Can't say what it was about. I have. It's horrendous when you go through that because the complexities of it, they completely freak your mind, don't they? It's hard to even understand half of it, of where it all goes. And there's a lot of tactical stuff that goes on, et cetera, et cetera, with these guys. That's why big companies pay the big bucks to have these people on board. Just the uncertainty, mate. Thanks for that call, okay, and we've got Phil Everton fan. Phil, good morning, how are you? Morning, Ali, morning Andy, okay? You're in chop form, Phil, what have you got to say, my friend? I was travelling to work and there's a Liverpool fans ready that do me head in because they're talking about Manchester City have killed the game and going to games as a circus and Ali felt sad when they left the stadium but Liverpool are part of what I would call like the top six, them top six are serial killers of football so it's like a serial killer saying oh well you've killed too many people in our club, in the little top six club because they get all the monopoly of the money, they get all the monopoly of Champions League and then all of a sudden they're not happy because someone's come and dined at the top table and they're eating too much. I understand if Sidio Bro Rose and it's fair play then that sounds but there's nothing fair about fair play, I'm an Everton fan, I know that no matter who buys our club we're never going to win the Premier League, Brentford are never going to win the Premier League, Brighton are never going to win the Premier League, Leicester fluked it but that was before FFP came in, Man City came in and Chelsea came in and rose up the ladder and the top four as it was before them two joined were not happy so they closed ranks, Newcastle have got the richest owners in the world, they have to sell their best players, Aston Villa finished fourth in the twice in the last three years. And they're selling players to balance books. How can you get near that elite? How can you break down serial killers and make football fair? All you guys as well, pundits. I get it, you've got to talk about what's going on. You're talking about just City ruining football? They're not the top four, the top five, the top six and being ruined in football for years. Go back to the 80s, the 70s. You didn't know who was going to win the Premier League, whether the division won then. You had no clue. We've had a lot of texts about conspiracy theories, etc. Well, it's a great point. It's a fair point. Leicester did do it, though. Leicester did do it. And again, I I think it's a little bit flippant to just say, you know, that was a fluke. Right? I don't think it... Well, I wouldn't describe it as a fluke, right, but it was certainly one of the biggest shocks in my lifetime. But it's not a fluke, is it? No. It's brilliant. No, no, no, it's not a fluke, but I may have used the wrong term, that'd be fair to follow. I think he probably used the wrong term. The point he's trying to make is, I don't think we'll see it again in the next 20, 30 years. You can't definitely You can definitely say leto. I know, of course you can't, but I think you can say it with a fair degree of confidence. I mean, generally speaking, right, the teams with the most money win the tournaments. That's what happens. Right, look, hypothetical situation. So this year, City are top of the league. If all of a sudden at Christmas they get, their punishment means they get a whopping great point deduction or whatever. And Brighton win the league this year right have they won it fair and square oh of course they have of course they have even though this season is going to have so many asterisks and exclamation marks next to it because of this scenario right If Brighton were to do it, if Brighton were to go on and win the league, it would be an unbelievable achievement. Of course it would, but ain't harming. You don't think it's... Well, you wouldn't... Ali, no-one would have said Leicester were going to win the league and they did it they did it one off incredible might be the biggest shock in sport never mean football and it was brilliant could happen and it was fantastic but I take false point, Andy. Well, for example... If the top team's not always done that? Yeah. What about you boys in Scotland, Celtic and Rangers? Of course. The top teams are always going to have it their way. Of course. That's like anything in life yeah and I look at the best chance of any team outside the top six that Phil's talking about there a one in a trophy has to be a cup it has to be a cup because you can win a cup because you can win a I agree with what Phil says about the rules, and certainly for other teams, emerging teams, like Newcastle, Villa last season. Felt there's something Villa's unbelievable. She was Newcastle. Villa had to sell an entire spine of the team. Yeah, yeah, in order to... You're right. And Newcastle's hands have been tied as well. Yeah, listen... And that is unfair. That's unfair. He is very true about Good call, Phil. Coming up, we're going to turn our attention to Manchester United and whether the players are letting Michael Carrick down.
