"GO TO ACCRINGTON STANLEY!" IRATE Liverpool fan SLAMS players and recruitment after Man City defeat!
After Liverpool's heavy defeat by Manchester City, talkSPORT callers argue over recruitment, refereeing and City's financial case
The show reacted to Manchester City's 3-0 win over 10-man Liverpool at Anfield, with Liverpool fans criticising the right-back, squad depth and recruitment while City fans defended their club and said outside hostility would not affect the players. It also covered the red card and yellow-card decisions, the Premier League financial rules row and Andoni's complaints about refereeing.
- Liverpool's starting right-back was a glaring weakness and failing to sign a right-back in the summer was a mistake — He is too slow and awkward on the ball, the issue was obvious, and the club did not address that need.
- The right-back should not be the main scapegoat because seven or eight Liverpool starters deserve more criticism — The right-back was not the worst part; the overall team performance was the issue.
- Liverpool's problems start with the owners and recruitment; the quality of the signings is not good enough and the players lack the hunger to fight for Liverpool — He criticised the sporting director and the club's eye for players, saying names and fees matter less than players willing to put everything on the line.
- Liverpool's squad is lopsided: the attack can cause problems, but the defence is not strong enough to sustain a Premier League title challenge — He listed the creative attacking options but questioned several defenders and noted that the young centre-back is only 21.
- City do not get the respect they deserve and the cheating narrative is unfair because the club spend their own money and have been successful — He compared City with Chelsea's long contracts, United's near billion-pound debt and City's community and Premier League investment.
- City's hierarchy knew the rules, while Chelsea spent heavily when the rules were different, so the controversy around City overshadows their good stories — He accepted that City's commercial work and infrastructure are exceptional but argued the current hierarchy acted with knowledge of the rules.
- Financial rules make it hard for Newcastle United and Aston Villa to catch up fairly; Newcastle still had to work within the rules after Saudi Arabian ownership, while City are alleged not to have done so — He said Newcastle previously had to work off net spend and the new owners were restricted by the rules, so they could not expand in the way City are alleged to have done.
- Liverpool were the better team before the red card and the red card changed the game; he was unhappy with several yellow-card decisions — He said they defended well and pushed harder in the second half, but an early fifth-minute yellow and a soft first booking hurt the game.
- The media are deliberately stoking hostility and a narrative, but it will not affect City's players; all they can do is win on the pitch, and if there is a points deduction the rest should play for second — He argued these players have won titles and individual awards and have been through big occasions, so boos and outside noise will not make them hide.
- The media are not deliberately creating hostility; they want clarity on the punishment and appeal, and City's start to the season and attitude have been excellent — He said fans want to know whether City are guilty, what the punishment is and where the appeal stands, while acknowledging City handled the pressure at Anfield well.

an electric and toxic atmosphere at Anfield as Man City rolled into town and came away with a big 3-0 win against 10-man Liverpool. But to say it was a controversial game played in the backdrop of a huge story is a bit of an understatement. Phone lines are open for you. 03717234, you know it works. Come and have your say. We are going to look back as well. Oliver Glasn's return to Shurus Park and Ho's encouraging start to the season continues with a good draw against Everton. Remember, Talk Sport is now available to watch live in more places than ever, included selected smart TVs and on YouTube as well. And look, it's all about you and your views right now. So, come on, dial the phone 03717234. Air your views to the nation on the final word on Talk Sport. All right, as I said, phone lines are busy. I'm not making up. They are very, very busy. Let's go straight to them again. Rob the Liverpool fan. Rob, what do you want to say? Uh how you doing guys? So uh you know obviously a very uh thin squad today. Thin squad to start. Uh but I think we started the game with 10 men. Uh you know I think Rojo uh at right back there. Uh you know I I was uh been obvious since I've seen the guy play. He's you know too slow. He kind of runs with a gate. Liverpool fans think we pulled off some sort of coup against Barcelona. And uh so it's it's unfortunate that we didn't address this need in the summer and uh you know Ariola today not subbing. I thought slot was horrible with his substitutions last year obviously. So and it's so as a supporter of fan I you know you like to think the uh manager sees what uh everybody saw which was to sub him off at halftime for Rojo. And um you know Vertz, I'm tired of hearing about Verts, how great he plays for uh Germany, you know, like he's hasn't played great for Liverpool. We probably should have started the game with Verts on the bench. Start Naomi. Even Barcola lot of uh he had a lot of run during the international break. Maybe start Rio. Like probably should have started some fresher legs with a very thin bench. Uh so you know, Man City is uh I mean they're all star up and down the lineup and off the bench. I mean, if they're galvanized, they're going to win the league by a lot. >> Yeah, it's um it's a difficult one, isn't it? >> Well, I think they'd be winning the league, but you mean difficult one as well. I mean, to kind of start with a Rahu. I mean, I think there are seven or eight players in that Liverpool starting 11 I'd pick to kind of point the finger at before pointing the finger at Ara. >> Well, I got there's a message on here about Graven Burch as well. Should have been subbed when he was on the yellow card. I mean, he was the best player on the pitch. Both teams, he was outstanding, by the way. So unfortunate to get sent off, I thought. Uh the first booking was you know not it was a booking but it was like you know not soft. Exactly. So >> I thought Liverpool had some highlights today. Kumas >> fantastic. >> Uh what a bonus that is to see that young man would play like he did today against the uh uh against a great team in Manchester City and great defenders. So you know there was some positives for Ro. It's his first game he's lost in the league. I I know obviously he's only won a couple of those six, but you know, I think he's going to do a good job there and um when they all come back um they look like uh they could push for it. >> Yeah. >> You know, push for honors. I don't know. I wouldn't say that they're going to win the Premier League, but you know, an FA Cup, a European competition, whatever. They've got the potential to to do some damage this year, that Liverpool team. >> Yeah, I thought young Victor Munos as well. I thought the young players actually really stood out and counted. I think some of the most experienced ones were maybe the ones that we expected a bit more from. Let's go to IO, a Liverpool fan as well. I I you probably heard Rob there sort of point at Ronald Orjo. It wasn't the greatest performance from him, but I didn't think it was the worst of the Liverpool players. >> Yeah, thanks. Good evening, guys. Thanks, Adi. Um, I don't know where to start from. There's a whole calamity of things happening in Liverpool. And it's it's so sad, you know, you when you want to look at things, you need to analyze it, you know, strategically. You need to look at it um holistically and you need to look at it when something starts, it starts from the top. You know, you need to look at the ambition of the owners. You know, you bring in a new coach, you don't back him. You know, personally, as a guy, I had Liverpool fans. I said I will never come on on national TV to say anything because I saw it happening. I know the fans were going to be we're going to be put to a lot of pain this season because there's no way they've supported the coach. There's no way the the the the recruitment has been good. >> They have given him 120 million. He spent it on Bradley Barcola. >> Yes. Sorry. Sorry, mate. You know, you see when you have a sporting director that is an absolute I don't want to call him names. He's gone off now. He's somewhere in in Saudi Arabia and this is the best. He's gone us. >> You can see the players inside. They're not good enough. I'm not someone that so crazy about names. Give me somebody that got heart. Give me somebody that's ready to die on the pitch for Liverpool Football Club. I don't care about names and how much they come with it. You can go to you can go to a Stanley or go to um wherever get 11 boys playing Saturday football if they're determined to play their hearts for me. I I I want you to I want you to be very honest here. Very honest. Right. How how how upset were you if you're honest with Echatik is Kirz Frimong Vertz and and Bradley Barcola? They've not worked out. But how upset were you when we got them? >> Adi, let me tell you something. When you you do recruitment, I work in office. I'm a professional. You the the organization is only as good as the people. And the people they're only as good as the resource that has brought them in. If you have a very good HR, even in public services, you will see that the company is driving. We did not have a very good equipment. Of all those players, Adi, I can only pick out AK as one that has come and has hit the ground running. >> No, no, no. You're right. I'm saying, you know, no, you're right. He's the only one that's actually done anything. But I'm saying when we signed them all, how happy were you with that recruitment when we hindsight's easy when at the time >> I was not I was not happy. >> You wasn't happy of Isach coming to Liverpool. >> I I was happy with Isach but I was not happy with his mindset. I was not happy with his mindset that his mindset might not be Liverpool. His mindset might not be Liverpool because he came in, he was injured and all that. But what I'm saying Adi, give me players that really, really want to play for Liverpool. to this. You can also blame the players. I will blame the players too because if I were on the pitch, you know, I know how old I am. I will play to die on that pitch because a lot was happening with with with Man City. They were not supposed to win. How can you How can you put Dou I'm looking at my TV now. I know what to do immediately. I'm sat in my house. Put two guys against Douku because I know it's going to absolutely cause panic. The moment Douku came in, Douku accounted for two goals. >> Yeah, it's difficult, isn't it? It's very very it's very very difficult because if you put those two players against Dou when Dou came on we were 10 men there's almost you can't afford to put two players on Dou I see you frantically scribbling PS what you doing you looking at the the transfer business that Liverpool have done >> well I'm looking at what this potentially could be the uh Liverpool team right >> but there is um >> it's a great team >> there is an argument to say that this that it's slightly lopsided did. Yeah. >> Right. So, let's just look at the offensive side of the team, right? >> And let's take away the the performance today of Kumas, right? Cuz he's a bonus for me. He's a bonus today. Massive bonus. And Munz, right? So, let's put them to one side. Offensively, you got Vert, Mallister, Subosi, Grain Burch, who obviously central midfield player, but offensively he's brilliant. Ekatik, Gakpo, Isaac, Bakola. Right. >> Not bad, is it? That you happy with that >> going forward? Yes. It looks all right, doesn't it? Back for the the defenders, Endo, Gomez, Fringong, Aratio, Kirk, Xez, who played today, Van Djk, who we know end best. Suddenly, that doesn't sound like a team that could win the Premier League. So, with the ball, uh, I would say Liverpool will will cause problems, >> will be a top top team. without the ball. There are question marks uh against that team. Um and Man City showed that when they went down to 10 men. They really got out the back four, didn't they? Yeah. >> You know, it don't matter who was the personnel at that particular time cuz he got got changed around a little bit, but they got at it and caused it massive problems. I mean, it could have been fine. >> Yeah. One thing I think a lot of Liverpool fans were screaming for in the summer was a defensive midfielder. There there is a net. And then you look at Elliot Anderson, obviously, cost a lot of money. look at that on the other side and think center back. I think both both the fullback positions to me worry me. >> Yeah. >> So, you know, when you when you start when you're looking at your best 11, your best 11 like defensively, you still look a little bit weak. >> Yeah. Jeremy Jac has been a bonus this season, but I don't again he's only 21. >> Yeah, he's a baby. >> 21 alongside Virgil Van Djk. So, you're right. Can I squeeze one more in? I'm looking at my producer. Can I squeeze more? Let's Craig the Man City fan. Craig, um it must be a bit weird again. Fantastic result. I thought you played really well the last 30 minutes, but there is this gray cloud over your head. How are you feeling? >> Yeah, just on the way back now, mate. Absolutely great atmosphere. I just think I don't know how you boys feel. Great show, by the way. It's normal, boys. Um I I just don't know how you guys feel in terms of the the cheating bit and everything else. It's just I just feel as though it's everything's being taken by the Premier League and such. And rules are rules, I get it. Yeah. But in terms of the cheating aspect and everything else is that I just feel as though um the club spent a few quid. Yeah, Chelsea are doing it at the minute in terms of they have done for the last couple of years putting players on 10 year contracts, eight year contracts. City have done a few quid it looks like with sponsors trying to inflate things whatever else they're spending their own money. Yeah. Over the road from us United nearly a billion pound in debt with no debt. We've invested into the community. We've got a great side. You know, we we we we we're promoting the Premier League the best we can. Uh I don't think there's any um consideration really in respect given to City. The players buy I mean Turkey there today. 30 million they're buying for him. They're paying for him. It's just 50 for Dou and all these all these other teams that are pay you know your Liverpools that are paying DA money for Berts and Isaac and you know the the inflated cost that other clubs are paying for players is that I don't think we get our due respect in terms of the business that we actually do. >> Let me come on to that because I think you you've got some valid points there. Firstly, your business whether you have s signed big players or smaller players have all been pretty successful. Yes, that's to say that. So the money that you've galvanized for whichever region where it's come commercially or for Abu Dhabi or wherever it's come from, they've spent well. There's no doubt about the the infrastructure of Manchester City is like no other club in the Premier League. >> Um and the women's team is, you know, exceptional how they've done things. So that side of it, absolutely. I think the problem we got is uh at the moment the the distaste we have a little bit is that they knew the rules. Chelsea spent all that money when the rules were different. This particular hierarchy knew the rules. >> Yeah. >> And and and at the moment it seems to me like they've just gone blindsided. It tried to sort of go right >> just going to do it. Yeah. And and I think that's where everybody's kind of losing all the good stories that Manchester City have brought, which it obviously he's he's mentioning there, which I think is is is >> it's fair. Yeah. As a fan, I I understand it. And I've always said this as well, playing devil's advocate, how do you catch the Liverpools, the Uniteds, the Arsenals, the Chelse, if you don't spend as heavily have they spent, it's almost impossible, I think, to kind of bridge the gap if you do it fairly. >> When you look at Newcastle, it's >> unfair on Villa and Newcastle. >> Well, let me just go into Newcastle because it's my old club, right? So I I I managed that team when we were net by the way. We had to bring in and sell and so we had no surplus. We was working off net. They then get an ownership which is the biggest fund group in the world. Yeah. Probably only Norwegian uh fund hedge fund is bigger uh than what the Saudi Arabians uh have their disposal. But of course they're restricted by the rules and they and they and they had to work within the rules. Hence why Newcastle at the moment are in where they are. They're trying they're trying to to do it in the within the rules. Unfortunately what it sounds or what it mean allegedly Manchester City haven't done that model. They've gone >> Yeah. >> We're all in. >> Yeah. We're all in and the rules don't mean anything >> and and and all that good stuff. unfortunately is being washed not washed away because that's unfair but sort of you know pushed to one side. So he's right to highlight it because it's there are some people there who have done unbelievable jobs. One being Pep Guardiola >> who will turn up to their first home game by the way >> he's going to come to the European game is it >> first European game. Yeah he's going to be there as well which is very interesting >> which is a show of strength by him uh to sort of underline the achievements that he he gained. is, you know, that you want to kind of they're all they want to kind of put a unity to it, don't they? And Pep is part of that unity. >> Certainly their argument. >> He is. All right. Keep your calls coming in 03717234. Really want to hear from Man City and Liverpool fans though at Anfield today just to hear kind of what the atmosphere uh was like. We are going to hear from Liverpool boss Andoni Areola. >> Crookie said it was the most amazing atmosphere >> and he's been to quite a few onesie style. Yeah. I mean obviously we send him everywhere. >> We we certainly do because he likes going everywhere. All right, you listen to the final word on Talk Sport of Sky Vegas all your favorite games all in one place 18 plus bgambawware.org. We can now hear from Liverpool boss Andoni Areola who is speaking to talk sports chief football correspondent Alex Crook and he was asked how he felt about his side's performance today. >> Yes, I think today the analysis is quite clear. No, I think there have been two different games. One game until the red card and the other game from the red card. We were the best team in the in the first game. I think especially in the second half we were even having the more clear chances. First half I think we defended really well. We played well probably we haven't created know as many chances. Second half I think we were pushing more pressure. Momentum was towards us and when when we considered the red card obviously the the momentum had changed and they've been better than us against. Do you think the referee maybe got a bit carried away with the atmosphere because there seem to be a lot of yellow cards by the end of the game and I think Arojo got booked for protesting a decision that ultimately went your way. Yes, I think if you go to the books probably no you can show the yellow card but to show in this kind of games with the tension that you can feel no yellow card in the fifth minute to straight away I felt woof I think it's getting yourself in trouble and also the first yellow to to try and grab B I I I think it's never a yellow card never a yellow card and are small decisions that I haven't liked in the first half because it hasn't happened in the other the other way and no I haven't like the the referee and people will focus in the second yellow car probably could be a yellow car but uh a lot of things that I I haven't liked honestly >> and is it better for everybody that this Manchester City situation gets resolved as quickly as possible because it did feel a little bit pantomime out there at times >> no I think there is a process ongoing and we have to wait and I said the other day uncertainty is not good for for anyone not even for them I suppose you know but we have to wait >> because ultimately we don't really know the significance of this result until their punishment his minister. >> You said it. Yes, sir. >> Uh, it speaks well, doesn't he? You can tell he's upset and don't speaking to our chief football correspondent, Alex Crook, after the game. And look, Paul's you've been in this situation. You plan something out and ultimately plan goes out the window when, you know, you get a player sent off. >> Yeah. When you get, you know, when you you come up against big big clubs, >> um, and you are a big club. When I was manager at Newcast, for example, you're playing Man United or you're playing Man City, the the level is is such so high >> that a sending off can can really impact the game. Sometimes it doesn't, sometimes you can get away of it and sometimes you can't. And today was a a very much a case of a player coming off the bench and changing the game um more or less uh simultaneously with a red card. >> Yeah. and and Daku and the red card was significant in in the outcome of that game. Aola is right to be and and only I should say um is right to um criticize the referee because you're at a big club, you're under pressure. It hasn't ended well that game. Man City got three goals and they're passing the ball around for fun. >> Yeah. >> And so it's uncomfortable. So you have to lean uh on that decision and he and he's right to do so. I personally think he's a great manager. I really like his style. I think he'd be good for Liverpool, but as I said, defensively, the defensive unit for me looks weak. >> Let's go to the phone lines again. Um 03717234. We're going to be taking your calls up until 9:00. Let's go to Chris, Liverpool fan. Uh Chris, I know you've got your thoughts on on that double yellow card for Ryan Graham. >> Yeah, City fan. Actually, I don't know what Liverpool fan come from. >> Oh, sorry. Um yeah, I don't know what that's about, but yeah, City fan me. Um I think like look, they they definitely changed the game. I think they said from my even from my perspective like the first yellow carbon soft, second one counterattacks going to happen, change the way the game uh was going. But um yeah, what I really wanted to talk about was kind of in response to I think it was Kate, the Liverpool fan, about the City players and yeah, >> you know, leaving because she didn't want to see the City players rubbing it in, all that sort of stuff. I'm really proud of the players today really. I think like United's away kind of showed what they were about today just really emphasized it even more really. All the stuff that's been thrown at them. Um all the business about the boss and the atmosphere and all that. It's nonsense. These players don't care. And I guess like my my wider point is that th
