Former mayor of Greater Manchester, now the prime minister, Andy [snorts] Burnham, previously raised eyebrows last month when he said he'd be quote really concerned if the club Manchester City's Abu Dhabi owners sold it in the wake of the verdict that we witnessed last week or week before last, saying that they'd been quote a huge partner in the building of Modern Manchester. He's kind of changed his tack a bit and has now pledged to put out there everything that he has done working with Manchester City. In other words, will the said Andy Burnham publish all details of his dealings with Manchester City and is it only right and proper that he does? Well, given the fact he opened his mouth rather stupidly >> um and put himself in the middle of the conversation, I mean, there was always going to be a blowback to the Man City circumstances and given the fact that he was the mayor of Manchester, not when some of the deals were done with them about regeneration and some of the sweetheart deals that were done that enabled Man City's owners to make a lot of money out of property there. >> Yeah. >> And not quite the wonderful benefactors and philanthropic endeavors that people like to portray them as. Um, and it's, you know, he's put himself in a situation where he opened his mouth, said something rather unwise because he's probably had many dealings with him over the years because obviously proximity of the football club. The nature of probably their endeavors in and around the community have brought them their paths together. And he should have kept his mouth shut and should have said, "Listen, it's not my business. I'm the prime minister. This is a football related matter. They'll have to deal with it in that respect." But he didn't want to. He wanted to say something else. And then, of course, then he got some political heat from it. He then recanted slightly. And now what's happened is that it's created an agenda to push freedom of information requests about what he has and hasn't done with them. So he's going to apparently make everyone aware of exactly the full nature of his dealings, >> which is which is only right and proper >> if indeed that's what he does. >> Yeah. Yeah. All right. >> I mean, I don't know how you can make the full nature of every single conversation you ever had with somebody um uh available. >> Sure. >> But you know, he put himself in his conversation. Of course, given the fact that the independent financial football regulator, sorry, independent football regulator is going to have to have some say in this as well, you don't want politicians anywhere near this because all of a sudden you're going to start having influence, undue influence. Yeah. >> Over independent regulators and you're going to start having UEFA saying, "Hang on a second. We've told you this before. The regulator needs to be an independent transaction rather than a politically appointed one, which we all know it was in the first place." >> Um, so there's a whole raft of reasons that he shouldn't be anywhere in this, including making ridiculous observations about drinking inside football stadiums. He should get across his facts rather than try to make himself popular. >> What about Fulham? They sit rock bottom of the Premier League table this Monday lunchtime with just two points from six matches. And of course, it begs the question and again we're talking about a manager under a lot of pressure. In this case, Alvaro Arbaloa. Have the owner Simon made a mistake by giving the job to Araloa. They threw away a one-0il lead at Ipsswitch and lost by two goals to one. And of course now big questions being asked if Arbalora is the right man. One time Real Madrid player and he wasn't slow to mention that postmatch. >> Maybe you don't know me but I played for the best team in the world. I have coached the best team in the world. Maybe you don't know but just to let you know that pressure is part of my life uh since I was kid. So it's normally in football. It's normal for players. It's normal for coaches. is normal for everybody that is is around a team and yes I think pressure is something that is important for me and I like it >> wrong with it >> he likes it you like that >> what's wrong with it >> a bit defiance >> well he's been asked a question he didn't just volunteer that information he's been asked a question about pressure >> so does he feel under pressure is he feeling that he's likely to lose his job probably was the delightful question he was asked um and so he's basically saying I live in that And the reasons why I live in that world is because I play for the biggest club in the world and I managed the biggest club in the world. These are facts. It's not you can't undermine that. He's got to manage Fulham better. But Fulham was always going to be a challenging um uh scenario because they aren't uh investing very heavily in their squad. They are diminishing. They've lost a manager that was doing a very good job for them. And here they are now probably finding an element of their level. Not not suggesting they were going to be relegated because there are other sides that might fill that category. But they you know they've gone and got results against Liverpool and against Manchester United albeit they've been draws but they've managed to compete in those games but in other games they've been poor. They were poor at certain aspects of the game um uh on the weekend because they were seeing a game out that should have been sorn out. >> Yeah. >> Is that word you say sorn out? It is. >> Um and fair play to I'm pleased for Gary O'Neal because I forecast imminent demise for him. So I'm pleased that he and Mark Ashton and Ipsswich because they're a great club, wellrun and he's been given an opportunity. So I hope they do well, but to get a result against Fulham and I saw the game and I watched the reaction from the players and scoring two goals in the last minutes [clears throat] of the game is is as good a victory as you can get because you're behind in a game that you want to get something out of and you've snatched it out of you know of defeat. >> I mean perhaps it's yeah, but for Fulham I mean it is Arbaloa is it sensible mentioning Real Madrid in the in the way that he did though? He was caretaker at Real Madrid for less than a season. >> He managed him. It's a fact. >> Yeah, he did. But if he'd really made a good go of it and had done extremely well, then Florentino Perez might have given him the job full time. He was like, "Go." >> How many managers has Madrid had then? So, I mean, >> I know, I know, I know. >> Madrid, Madrid fire managers. They fire big name managers. Managers that have got real credit, real credence, you know, uh, Carlo Angelotti's been fired by Madrid brought back and fired, you know. So it isn't what it you know that's is he's been asked the question whether he should have just said no I don't feel the pressure and whether he could have more managerial experience. I don't think we can use it as a stick to parody him to say that we given it big licks and you can't even manage Fulham. >> Well he's answering a question that is so impertinent in this day and age which is I wonder I wonder how many journalists would love to be asked how many how quickly they think they're going to lose their job next time they write a bad article. >> You know football >> it goes with the territory because >> it goes with territory. You're highly paid so you get on with it. So you answer how you want. >> Yeah. >> So he answers how he wants and what we're trying to do is go, "Oh yeah, >> you only we only at Madrid for 5 minutes." >> So So but he was at Madrid. He did manage them for a year. How many people in the history of football have managed Real Madrid for any period of time? >> What are in the passing? What are them? What do you What do you look at when you you look at Fulham? >> Are they a club that's ever going to do anything significant >> in the top flight? Well, I mean, Shad Khan is a very impressive character. Oh, yeah. And a very wealthy individual. >> But he designed the NFL at the weekend with with Jacksonville being in >> Yeah. But he has he has also a vest a significant interest in Fulham and wants it to do well and he's got a lot of money in them. I think his son's in there um making a lot of the commercial decisions. >> Yeah. >> Um are Fulham guilty of a lack of ambition, a lack of investment? Are they governed by financial fair play which restricts them? Did they punch way above their weight with Marco Silva? All of those questions are probably answered to the affirmative. But um does that mean that they're going to drop out of the division or you know within six or seven games this guy should be losing his job? I think he should be given an opportunity to grow arms and legs in the job. He's gotten results. He's gotten got a good result at Liverpool. >> Yeah, >> he got a good result. I mean, as bad as Man United are, they're still Manchester United. So, he's got a decent result there. They, you know, they weren't great against Palace and they haven't been great in other games. >> Next up is Hull. >> Well, that's a difficult game because Hull are bouncing. Uh where is it? Craven Cottage or is it? >> Yeah, it's a Craven Cottage. >> Yeah, I mean, you know, Hollow in are in are in good fatal, aren't they? Yeah. I think the only game they've lost this season they were unlucky to lose >> and so they'll be going to that game full of confidence trying to get some more points to make sure that the when it levels out, which it will do and hull some of the adversity that the Premier League brings will come Hull's way, but it'll be nice to have 15 10 12 13 14 points. Yeah. >> You know, 7 8 9 10 games into a season. Um if you are going to realize that your squad's going to start to be challenged as the season goes on. I mean, if he loses to Hull at home, he can't rattle off the Real Madrid >> routine answer to a question. >> But I don't suppose he will. >> I don't suppose he will. He's not going to I mean, if he if he trots out the Real Madrid line every single time he's asked about something, he probably will get ridicule. Yeah. >> But he in in context of that question, he probably felt it was a reasonable answer to explain that he doesn't feel pressure. >> So if he says, "I don't feel pressure." So the journalist then turns around said, "Why don't you feel pressure?" If he had then turned around and said, "Well, because I've managed one of the biggest clubs in the world and I played there." And when you play for a club like Real Madrid, you know what pressure feels like. I'm not one of those that succumbs to pressure. >> So I think he's perfectly within his right to contextualize the reasons why he doesn't feel pressure. >> And K's an owner that you admire. If if you're a Fulham fan, you think well the club I don't I don't particularly admire him. I thought he was an impressive character when I sat with him and spoke to him because he is quite murial and clearly in the business world he's remarkably successful. Don't know much about his son >> um to speak to to about him. But I do know that over the last couple of seasons, Fulham have enjoyed a relative level of success which would have been created by the manager who was employed by the owner and his son. So you have to judge things as you see fit. Fulham aren't a huge spender. They aren't a huge football club. They've been in the Premier League doing relatively well for a few seasons now. You have to give them due respect. >> Yeah. Yeah. Alvarado Arboral struggling somewhat at Fulham and Fulham rock bottom at the moment. a division of course where the lead is uh very much all Manchester cities right now because we'll start where we finished or we'll finish where we started this morning. Manchester City delivered a statement of intent in that uh first game since being found guilty of breaching the Premier League financial regulations. Swatting aside 10-man Liverpool 3-0. If anything, in the coming days when Moresca crops up, you want to see the media do their job a bit more in what way? A bit more pointedly, objectively >> in so far as I want to live on this ever increasing or decreasing hamster >> of uh Manchester City until wheel >> hamster wheel of Manchester City. Yeah. If we're going to keep asking them questions and they're going to keep saying that they have an appeal and this appeal will be overcome and they are innocent, then I do think it's incumbent upon us to turn around and say, "Well, of course, you will be wanting to do this appeal very quickly. You won't be delaying the appeal. You won't be pulling rules out of your backside to suggest that you want an appeal that takes longer because the rules are changed during the course of the time that you were being uh adjudicated upon. And the reasons why you're being adjudicated on for so long is because you made it so bleed and difficult for the panel in the first place. None of this will play out. You have irrefutable evidence. You want to get it out in the public in into the independent commission as quickly as you possibly can and being found innocent these charges, won't you? So, Man City won't your ownership might be playing fast and loose with the policies, will they to get them to get a long- winded approach so it goes on and on and on. Those are sort of questions a bit more >> yeah streamlined than that that I would like to see them answer rather than the ability to go we're innocent. You're not innocent. You're guilty right now. Actually, >> you're guilty right now. You've got to prove your innocence. You had one go at it and you got an unequivocal slapping and now apparently you've got the same irrefutable evidence that's now going to be irrefutable this time round and all we want it to be done in is a timely fashion and you must want the same mustn't you? Okay, we shall await with interest any developments on Manchester City.
