"WHAT IS GOING ON?" Jamie Jackson EXAMINES what went WRONG for Manchester United against Spurs!
Jamie Jackson dissects Manchester United’s problems after Spurs: a chaotic start, no fight and Carrick’s inexperience
The segment looks at Manchester United’s chaotic display after facing Spurs, with Jamie Jackson arguing that six points from six games is their worst start since 1986 and that the side is average and lacks fight. They also discuss Luke Shaw’s clash, a brief spark from a substitute signing and Carrick’s inexperience, before a short prediction about a hostile Anfield for Manchester City.
- That clash should not be called a headbutt; Luke Shaw and his opponent should both have been booked or sent off, and Shaw’s reaction was shaped by his old leg-break trauma — He said the earlier scissors-kick challenge missed Shaw but could have caused serious damage, and Shaw’s uncharacteristic reaction showed he may have feared another serious injury.
- United’s start has gone badly wrong: six points from six games is their worst start since 1986, and the problems are not a one-off — He agreed that they looked all over the place in the opening period and cited only one win and six points from six games.
- The brief spark from the substitute signing is too small a sample to make him the answer; United should already have that kind of quality — He pointed to the player’s first touch, turn and left-footed pass to Fernandez as a flash of skill and athleticism, but stressed the sample was tiny and United had also recruited others.
- United were even worse than Spurs, who were the worst team in the Premier League on the day, and there is no clear direction; their season already feels over — He said after six games he cannot see where it goes, and United performed worse than a Spurs side he called the worst in the league that day.
- This United side is too quiet and lacks aggression and fight; Shaw chasing after his opponent was wrong but at least showed some spirit — He said the team is not on edge or feisty enough, recalled the fight and leadership Roy Keane gave United, and noted Martinez showed leadership but the side overall is too passive.
- Carrick’s lack of experience makes a United revival harder; a proven manager like Mourinho would have a better chance of turning them around — He said Carrick had only 21 top-flight games before this season, all with United and including four as caretaker, so this is a real test for him.
- Manchester City will get a fiercely hostile, even industrial welcome at Anfield, and the game will be a real barn-burner — He cited the 114 financial wrongdoing charges hanging over City, the recent rivalry with Liverpool and Anfield’s always-involved crowd.

Jamie Jackson is with us as usual on a Sunday morning. Jamie, how are you today? A lot of uh Man United, Manchester City in the headlines today. >> Wow. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I'm I'm very well, thank you. And yes, it is a bit of a United Spurs plus City going to Liverpool uh fest on the back pages. Uh the Sun has hot heads uh with and cool heads. So hotads is regarding the sort of the butt of Benam co on shore which actually was more of a movement of his head. >> It's never a headbutt. I'm from >> I'm from Glasgow. It's never a headbutt. It's called a square go. >> Yeah. Yeah. I mean Shaw went down like a like a prize fighter taking a fall I'm getting at here. >> Uh and actually Shaw was lucky not to be sent off himself I thought for the on Ben. The only thing I'm going to add here right and sadly I was at this game Luke Shaw suffered a horrific double leg break against at PSV 2015 under Louis Van Hal. As I say I was at that game was the player and you know it was career threatening. Now I don't know this for sure but I I would be absolutely surprised if he did not flash through his head when when the original scissors kick sort of challenge from Ben Cer which actually missed Shaw but could have you know could have caused serious damage. know from Shaw's reaction. I mean, he's not usually like that that there probably was a bit of PTSD involved there where he thought you could have really done me there. But the way Shaw's got up, he's flattened Bentangor. Benor is going to react to that naturally. Both of them should have been cautioned or both of them should have seen Reddit because I don't think what Shaw did was right either. But you can never call that a headbutt. I mean, my husband said that is he's he's lunched in with his head. I'm like, it's just not though. They're just squaring up to each other. That's emotions. That's passion. He's fuming at him. You You could have hurt me there. Anyway, I've I've said this already, Jamie. I'm a broken record. >> Um I wanted to add, you know, obviously Manchester United starts the season's been very difficult, Jamie. And um their performance yesterday, especially the opening period of the game, they just looked like they were at sixes and sevens everywhere on the pitch. >> Well, 100% Tony. I mean, you are you've just sort of like crystallized the story of their sort of season performance-wise. They've only they've only got one win. I think it was it switch. >> They've got uh six points from opening six games. It's the worst start since 1986. >> Uh and you're looking at it and you're thinking crumbs. What is going on here? I mean, there was nothing there really. the one tiny little spark and it is a little bit clutch to get straws because it's kind of what you have to do is when believer came on and as I'm saying it's a tiny tiny sample sizes the his first action was got the ball span span span the sort of opponent and and chipped a lovely sort of left foot pass into Fernandez along left you thought oh look there's a bit of skill a bit of elite sort of um sort of talent sort of showing itself and you and and and you sort of were reminded of the difference you know a bit of sort of prime skill Bill can make and and you know he's actually again it's very small sample size but he's actually a a little bit bigger uh a unit than I thought he looks athletic and he looks like he can play all the things United actually could do with but wait a minute United should have in place anyway because it's Manchester United they've had a summer you know where they've also recruited other players and I don't know it just it just I'm not too sure where they go from here but I know where they go geographically they're Atletico Madrid on Tuesday and they've got leads ne next in the Premier League, but it's you know he said afterwards Carrick um you know disappointed it hurts they were booed at times um and he also said we need to put more points on the board and you know that that's that's kind of true but I I just you know I've obviously witnessed many at a disappointing United team over the years since 2012 when I've started doing this job and this is the latest one it's kind of you know to be to be honest when they're in more than one competition you know like last season when character took over. This is kind of the team that they are United. They're sort of a bit average, a bit sort of can turn it on sometimes, other times cannot. And and this is kind of the story of Manchester United since Ferguson left. I am sorry yet to say yet again. >> Yeah, it's I just don't know where it goes for me. I think he could be I know it's soon, but I just don't see where it goes. We were worse than Spurs yesterday, and Spurs were the worst team in the Premier League yesterday. And I just think it's done. just I know >> it's um it's very hard when you've watched or played against a certain type of Manchester United team and I have and and the the standards and the quality are just nowhere even close to what they had been in the past. And you're right to mention Biba. We said this this morning earlier on Jamie if there's a positive to take Biba KBU you know like say he's he's a horse he's he's there Martinez showed leadership yesterday but other than that I think the season is done. >> Yeah. Well is you know I actually sort of said what you've just said then Shabban to a colleague after the game six games in and it feels like their season is over. They're out of the Carabal Cup already. I think it was Brighton knocked them out. Correct me if I'm wrong. winning that game they break knock us out. Yeah. >> Yeah. Um and I don't know. I mean it's just maybe and again it really is clutch extra. Maybe Believer I don't know if he could be the answer but he can spark something. I mean you know we haven't seen him obviously until yesterday and he is supposedly the marquee signing and I know he had a sort of up and down season last year but he was good the year before. I'm just as you mentioned there maybe him and Mayu because I think Mayu could definitely play. >> Yeah. >> But it's just this defense and you're right about Shaw. He doesn't normally react like that but in a way obviously we don't want to see sort of um uh violence on the field but in the way the fact that he actually chased after the guy showed a bit of spirit I was actually quite encouraged because I think this this team isn't on the edge enough it's a bit of a cliche to go to this to this but you know Roy Keane at least gave United you know a lot of fight and a lot of leadership and I just you mentioned Martinez they're a very quiet team they're not aggressive enough they're just not I don't know feisty enough um and because if you do that that gets you into the game. And it's interesting you, you know, deserve saying afterwards, we need more. He used the word we, you know, we need to show what we showed today, which was blood and courage. Yeah. You know, he that's the base requirement and that's kind of what United need to be honest. They need that as a base requirement. you know, the Carrick, you look at him on the touch line, and I'm not saying it's his fault, but in this in these situations where it's difficult, you think, well, his lack of experience, I think it was 21 top uh league games before this season started, um you know, in the Premier League all with United because he had four games sort of previously as a caretaker. And you think, well, if it's Mourinho, for example, who's got all that experience, who's got the sort of the track record, I think he could re has more chance of reviving. But, you know, it's a real test of Carrick. hopefully comes through because we want to see everyone do well obviously you know in their jobs basically. >> Yeah. No, true. Um just talking about blood and courage back page of all the newspapers today building up to Liverpool Manchester City. That is going to be a hostile atmosphere quickly Jamie. >> Yeah. Yeah. I mean it will be. I've done this game before. I'll actually be sat on the the sofa enjoying this from the comfort of my home. Feeble is is the adjective I'd use to describe the the the welcome Manchester City are going to get. You can maybe use more industrial ones that I can't say on air. Yes, it's going to it's going to be an absolute barn burner. And as I think everyone's been saying, what a game for City to have after being basically found guilty of cheating on 114 counts of financial wrongdoing going to Liverpool, you know, the sort of recently their arch rivals. And yeah, the crowd at Anfield, how can I say this? This is always involved. Yes, crowd. It's >> nice way that Jamie, as always, thank you for your time this morning. We'll speak to you again soon. >> Thank you. Cheers. >> The Guardians Manchester correspondent Jamie Jackson with us now.
