"BUTTON IT!" talkSPORT REACT to Martinez's EXPLOSIVE post-match comments on Man United's HIERARCHY!
talkSPORT reacts: Martinez blasts Man United hierarchy as pressure builds on Carrick
The video focuses on the Champions League night after Manchester United's defeat to Atletico Madrid, with Lisandro Martinez's Amazon Prime post-match interview criticising the United hierarchy and lack of investment. Several members of the talkSPORT team accept he may have a point about the squad but say it was wrong for him to call out technical director Jason Wilcox publicly and that it could split the dressing room; Carrick's job is also under threat. Later they discuss Manchester City's financial wrongdoing case, Burnham and independent regulator David Kogan.
- The red card can be called soft, but under the rules a last-man challenge with contact has to be a sending-off; the defender deserves some sympathy. — The forward cuts across and slows down to draw contact, leaving the defender nowhere to go, so the referee has little choice.
- Martinez should button it and not publicly attack the Manchester United hierarchy because he has let United down many times himself. — He also made a defensive error against Tottenham; after a defeat players find it easy to point at the board.
- United's squad is roughly where it should be in the table, maybe a couple of places higher, but not as good as several teams above them. — Tottenham outplayed United for long spells, and United's early-season results have been disappointing.
- Martinez has the right to speak, but publicly criticising the club is not appropriate and he should focus on his own job. — It exposes discontent in the camp, and his own performances have not been good enough.
- Public comments like Martinez's could rip the dressing room apart. — Public criticism damages team unity and makes the dressing room harder to manage.
- He was against Carrick's permanent appointment and says the club has not backed him enough in the transfer market; Martinez hit the nail on the head but has made Carrick's position harder. — They have gone down the same road of promoting an interim manager after a good run; with too few arrivals, the squad will now look at both Martinez and the board.
- Carrick could be gone after this week, and United will struggle to win at Leeds. — Leeds are playing good football and Elland Road will be electric; he cannot see how United get a win.
- Martinez has a point about squad depth, but publicly naming technical director Jason Wilcox is the nuclear option and he should apologise. — The manager or captain Bruno would not get away with saying that; it now tests Carrick's management.
- Burnham's comment on City being found guilty was a major mistake and he should stay out; geopolitics and Abu Dhabi's economic role should not affect the Premier League case. — Independent regulator David Kogan said he would resign if there was political interference; City deny the charges and will appeal, but have currently been found guilty of the majority of financial wrongdoing charges.

Right, Champions League returned to talk sport last night and it didn't disappoint. The story of the night came out in Madrid. Manchester United went out there with not much expectation. We're one n down within 58 seconds. When I see that I don't believe well you've managed. >> Drives you nuts. >> You you've you've you've you've kicked him out in that pitch. Come on, first 20 minutes we're tight. We don't do it stupid. And 58 seconds later you won down >> and you're under the whole game plan. >> You're under pressure. You think I might as well chuck it now. >> The whole game plan. They did throw some punches throughout the game. However, it wasn't enough. Losing 2-0 to Atéico with center back Yuro been sent off. I've looked at a couple of times. Didn't see it live, but I've looked at on the Do >> you know what it was? Want me to tell you? It's exactly the one that I asked Der McGaller about on Monday, >> right? >> Where the forward cuts across >> the defender >> and the defender can't really he's got a right arm across him. That's the one thing I would say, but there's nowhere really for the defender to go. Down he comes. >> Ali, what were we taught as kids? >> When you get yourself across the defender, >> when you get beyond them, get across them. He can't he can't tackle. You can't touch it. >> Correct. But some of the times, this is my point. Some of the times and trying to avoid it's inevitable because if the forward's that good at it, which they are nowadays, you'll across the defender, they'll bring you down. It's a red car. I think that's >> and they'll slow down. >> Yeah, >> they'll they'll slow themselves down a we bit. So you're bounty. >> But don't you have any and I can't believe I'm saying this really, but don't you really have a little bit of sympathy for the defender if they're getting They kind of got red card all the time if they get nowhere to go. >> You do. You do. You You have no sympathy whatsoever. Sell Rangers Cup fin someone brings you a card. Exactly. So don't get >> However, the headlines came from the postmatch interviews where Amazon as Landro Martinez launched a scathing rant at the Manchester United board. Let's have a listen to this. >> We did an a fantastic season last season and now we we expect more from from the top from up you know to bring more more player to to compete because many many teams uh bring many players as well and today also at they have an amazing team >> but what you're saying is you expected more investment in the squad in the summer. >> Yeah 100%. our aspect more from our technical director I have to be honest you know >> often in this situation it's the manager who is the one that is is removed you can't necessarily go >> you start changing changing changing manager and but what about other areas I can I can't say more >> there you go what about that by the way Martin is you know I I wish he'd just button cuz he has let United down so many times. >> How about the weekend where he drops Sankani for the Tottenham goal? >> Yeah, I'm I'm sorry. So, you know, don't don't start going on about things. >> Your own house in order. >> Absolutely in order. Correct. >> So, I think he's out of order there. And, you know, it's easy for players when you get beat again to play the ball. Don't get me wrong, you know, United, you look at it and you think there's something wrong here because United um you know the Tottenham game, Tottenham outplayed them for a long period, didn't >> as I say only saw the highlights United were poor first half, mate. Poor first half, I thought. But I said it yesterday, mate. I don't know what you think. I'll look at United team, look at United squad and look at where they are and that's probably where they should be. Maybe couple of places up, you know. I agree. >> They should be a couple of places. >> I agree there, you know, some disappointing results. Obviously Holly opening the game of season who who were terrific >> but in the grand scheme of things they're they're not as as good a squad as >> four or five of the team six of the team seven eight teams above them >> United fans you agree with Martin is look you probably do but I'm just I wish he I wish it had come from someone else to be honest was it right these comments came from him we're taking your calls 03717234 have your say >> someone who is perhaps not doing enough is Michael Carrick he's across the back pages today after Man United's defeat in the mirror. Red and dread for Carrick. The times more misery for United. Uh the Daily Express slow off the mark. They obviously conceded very quickly. Uh the Sun have gone with you're in big trouble. Um Alan, let's start with the red card. >> Yeah. >> What did you make of it? Do you think that is a soft red card? What does it say about the state of refereeing that's been given? >> I think it's difficult for the ref. Um you could guaranteed say it was soft. Say, "Oh, come on, ref. Give them a give them a break." But the rules of the law, they'll turn around and say, "Well, he's the last man. He's gone down. I think there was contact. He has to go." >> He has to go. Yeah. >> But for me, I feel sorry for him. >> Yeah. It's it's a sort of clumsy challenge, isn't it? But ultimately, he's the last man and he puts >> said earlier, Laura, you know, when when a center a center a half gets the wrong side and the forward forward can just slow down slightly. So, you're going to run into him and as soon as that contact's made, boom, down he goes. >> You're down. Yeah. >> And the referee has to give it. >> Yeah. Alli, what about Landre Martinez's comments? Uh, do you do you see where he's coming from when it comes to Man United not bringing in the type of signings that would allow them uh to compete in the Champions League? They brought in Tielemans, Belaba, uh, a couple of others, but certainly not a kind of blockbuster transfer window for Man United. Do you see where he's coming from? >> Uh, Laura probably do to a certain degree, but I'm not sure it's it's his position to see it. You know, he should concentrate in his own job. actually should be concentrating on no dropping Salanki for the equalizer at the weekend to be honest you I didn't hear the board having a go at him about that but listen he's in his opinion so you got to say um he probably does have a point but what it doesn't look it's not a good look I mean straight away we're talking about it the first time you see me come in there's another player not happy there's you know bit of descent within the camp I I I don't really like to bonish you players coming out and criticizing and the club or their own teammates. I'm I'm probably a little bit old school in that respect. I know they'll be people out there think it'll be refreshing and I what I will do I I'll support his right to say it but I do think it's a good look. I think he's got to keep his mouth shut. >> I did watch Celtics new signing last night. Nick's signing. >> Yeah, >> we blonde boy for Leo midfield. >> Was that the Harson? >> Not bad. >> Thought it was good. >> He good. I thought it wasn't too bad. right into the shelter. Don't worry about that. >> Oh, yeah. I thought it wasn't too bad. She getting back to the sending off Laura. >> Yeah, >> it's the exact same question I asked with Dere McGaller. I think it was Monday morning and that is the one thing I asked him. It's an automatic booking where the defender effectively has nowhere to go. No, I'm not sure. I would say Lioro would know where to go. There is a right arm comes across, but the amount of times a forward will just go in front of the defender. Slow down a little bit. Defenders get nowhere to go. The only thing that can happen is the bump in each other gives away a free kick. I do have a certain degree of sympathy for a defender there in in the yellow or red card in the center. >> Yeah, you often see the defender kind of put their hands up, don't you? Back off a little bit. >> Five games without a win for Michael Carrick and Manchester United. Simeone got the better of Michael Carrick in the Metropolitano out in Madrid last night. Heaving more pressure on the shoulders of the Manchester United boss. It doesn't help. I'm sticking up from here. It doesn't help when you concede a goal in 58 seconds. What a disgrace. He was backed however after the game by center back Martinez, Landro Martinez, who launched a scathing ranked at the Manchester United board in a postmatch interview with Amazon Prime. So whether he'll play the next game is be a doubt. Martinez as he went on to say we had a fantastic season last season and now expect more from the top more players to compete because many teams bring many players in as well. Basically the squad's not big enough with quality. Expect more from our technical director Jason Wilcox. 100% digging out Jason in the press conference after the game. Man United boss Michael Carrick. Hold on a minute. Let me rewind you matters. What happened with that first goal? Then after 58 seconds in the press, where were you? In the press conference after the game, United boss Michael Carrick was asked about his comments. I think it's a little bit on the emotions of the game as well of of um coming here and being disappointed not to to get something from the game. And um straight after a game for me is now is is not the time to to to talk about, you know, that interview cuz I've not seen it. So um I can't really comment on that. But I think it's uh it's important for us to um to move forward quickly really. I think it's there's a big game on Sunday and it's really important that we move we move forward and we stay focused on that. There's disappoint within the group. I'm I'm bitly disappointed um in certain things and and the boys are as well as a group of players. >> Alli, you suggest that United are desperate for a win this weekend. >> Oh, >> desperate. >> And by the way, I' I've got to tell you, I'm not sure I fancy them. M >> on Ellen road. I told you I I thought leads um were excellent for an hour >> against Arsenal. >> Against Arsenal. >> Yeah. >> Um and they've started the season. Kuan, you know, without looking particularly dangerous against um Arsenal the weekend. Led the line superbly. >> They were really organized, well well disciplined. I mean that is one tough game for Manchester United the weekend. Going back to Martins, I don't know him that well, but he's a bit of a he's whenever there's a bit of a smash up going on or argument. He's always there. He's one of them. He's in your face. So, I'm not really I'm not I'm not a lover of him. Do >> you know something else? It's one of these things you you'll defend his right to give an opinion. Of course you will. And as I mentioned earlier, some people will think it's refreshing. I'm not sure it helps at all. >> Well, Wayne Rooney said comments like Martinez could rip the dressing room apart. Man United fans, do you agree where Martin is or Wayne? Jack's a Manchester United fan. Jack, a very good morning. >> Good morning, Jack. >> Good morning, Ali. Good morning, Alan. You boys okay? >> Very well, Jack. Very well, mate. What's going wrong at United? I don't I don't get it. I thought they were in for a big season this year. >> Ah, I mean, where to start? I mean, for one, I'll be totally honest with you. I was against the appointment of Michael Carrick fulltime. >> Yeah. Um we've been down this road how many times now s you know came in temporary job done well we offered him it sold our hearts over our heads and we're going down that road again. Um Inios have decided he is the man and for me they've sold him short in terms of squad arrivals. Um, I think Martinez hit the nail on the head, but I also think he put Michael Carrick in a very tricky situation where how do you approach that now? You know, the squad are going to be looking at Martinez. The squad are going to be looking at the board. I just think it's an absolute disaster if I'm being totally honest with you boys. >> And uh, Ellen Road, leads United coming up as well, Jack Krikey. I can I can think of kind of places to go. >> Well, uh, I mean to be honest, Leads are playing good football. Well, I mean, I've been speaking to a few of my mates this week and I said I I honestly think that this could be the end of Michael Carrick to be honest after this week. Um, going to the Metropolitan hard, but then follow that go to Ellen Road where the atmosphere is going to be absolutely electric. Leads are going to be up for it. Um, I just don't see how United get a win if I'm being totally honest. >> Yeah. Well, we'll see. Football's a funny game as we know Jack end can happen but you'd fancy you'd fancy leads to be right in their throats wouldn't you? Okay, right about it. To to give us more, let's bring in the Guardians Manchester correspondent. He must be a busy boy at the moment with both sides, blue and red. Jamie Jackson. Morning, Jamie. >> Jamie, how are you? >> I'm good, thank you. Yeah, you are right. It's never dull in Manchester. >> Are you getting any sleep? You getting any sleep? Unbelievable. >> Jamie. Jamie, just to correct you, it's always dull in Manchester, but never with the football. It's the same as Glasgow, mate. Weatherwise, it's shocking. But what is going on? And I mean I mean Michael I think Jack made a good point there. I don't know if you heard the caller. It's probably the last thing Michael Carrick needs as well or or have I got it wrong is a bit of you know a bit of defense from only one one of his players what he needs. >> Well I think you're kind of right all round. I mean I think to the fans it plays well. Yes. because judging by reaction kind of immediately from any play you know they don't really fancy Jason Wilcox the technical director also Ratcliffe you know and also we know that they don't fancy the Glazers full stop >> uh but you know I mean Wayne Rooney was interesting sort of saying that he had experience when he was a player I don't know if you remember this he put in a transfer request under Ferguson and then two days later apologized so maybe that is the way forward if you want to if you got to think about the good of the team and going to leads Ellen road has discussing May Martinez needs to come out and say look I'm really sorry about this I should not have said that here at the moment is out of order of me and that that's probably the best you know if I was advising them that this is what I would say um on the other hand I don't know if Mart said that look look we've got a great team and a great squad but we could just do with a bit more depth a bit more competition it might have gone you you know what I mean because I think he's got a point it was just the way in which he said it and then basically you know I could not believe it when he said I expect more from my tech technical director basically being Jason Wilcox. Yeah, >> that's the nuclear option really. And you know, >> yeah, >> you know, I don't I don't think the manager would get away with saying that or Bruno Fernandez is the captain, right? So, >> it's an interesting call from him. Um, and as you've been saying again quite correctly, where was he for Salanki, for example, um, you know, at the weekend. So, it's a little bit of a mess. So, this is now a test and as was discussing, Carrick doesn't really need another test at the moment, but a test of his management. Can he can he sort of kill this? >> And going to Alen Road next. just on the blue side of things. Jamie, I don't know if you're right right stuck into that at the moment. It's incredible what's going on in Manchester. Again, front pages of some of the papers. It's all about city uh all about our prime minister. What is going on here? This is not a can of worms. This is a bucket full of worms. >> Yeah. I mean, yeah. I was at the Mesa press conference yesterday. This did not come up. But when you're making the front pages as a football club Yes. and it's involving the prime minister as you're basically saying, Al, it's not a great sign, is it? So, it just shows the sort of uh the scale of this this this um story or this this happening with the city being found cheating. Remember, at the moment, they're guilty of cheating of a you know, the majority of these uh charges of financial wrongdoing. Obviously, they're going to appeal, they deny it, all the rest of it. But, yeah, Burnham's in a little bit of a sticky um position, it seems. was he is from when he was primarily uh the mayor of Greater Manchester. So I don't know where >> is he being do you think he's been I know it's difficult Jamie is he naive on this now does he not realize what what the power he has now and the position he's in he should stay out of this surely >> well you're right Al where I think he I made a massive mistake was the comment as prime minister when when you know when the guilty verdict came out that it'd be I can't exactly what you said but I'm paraphrasing it'd be a shame to lo you know to lose Manchester City now >> it it may well be but the point is as prime minister says, "You're basically saying, Al, you don't be saying that. As simple as that." It's interesting the independent regulator David Kogan said yesterday he would resign. Yes. If any political interference, yeah, you are correct. >> Rightly so. >> Yeah. No, you're completely correct. And it was actually good to hear him say that, be so sort of like upfront with it, laying out his terms. Um, and you know, he did stress that so far he's not had any, but it's just like, you know, geopolitics, etc. It's got no >> bearing on on the Premier League football if you ask me in my humble opinion. So it doesn't matter what Abu Dhabi do for the economy. If there's wrongdoing as at the moment they've been fel guilty of this, the football club obviously then that is wrong. >> Correct. Correct. Jamie, thank you very much. >> Jamie, thanks very much. >> Jamie Jackson there coming up with attention to Charlesson. Well, >> I couldn't keep my face straight there. Why? >> When Jamie said it doesn't matter what Abby Dabby do.
