"THEY'RE UNDENIABLES!" Martin Keown HITS BACK at 'UNWATCHABLES' comments after Arsenal BEAT Forest!
talkSPORT debate Arsenal's 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest as Martin hits back at 'unwatchables' criticism
The show discusses Arsenal's 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, including whether the halftime substitution was tactical, whether Arsenal are 'unwatchables', and the roles of starters and substitutes. Martin argues the change was tactical and calls the side the 'Undeniables', while a Daily Mail article says the win was scruffy rather than stylish. The panel also assesses Forest's relegation plight and Arsenal's need for personnel changes.
- The halftime change was not a sign that the player is out of favour; it was a tactical move to bring on a more direct specialist winger against Forest's compact back five. — Forest were set up to make the game tight, and Arsenal needed a different profile on the left; the substitute threatened down the wing and then came inside to punish them.
- Arsenal are now the 'unwatchables'; the win at Nottingham Forest was scruffy, not stylish. — The performance got the job done but was scruffy rather than stylish.
- This Arsenal side should be called the 'Undeniables', not the 'unwatchables'; the criticism is a manufactured narrative. — They have won 10 of their last 11 games and keep finding a way to win; the line is being pushed by a journalist looking for a story.
- Nottingham Forest will get out of trouble because their manager is calm; the bigger story is the club's plight after a fifth manager in just over 12 months. — They are in the bottom three but the manager is calm, and the instability is the real issue.
- Arsenal did their job with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest; the 'unwatchables' tag is unfair. — Forest deliberately made the game difficult, it is not an easy ground or opponent, and Arsenal kept going until they won.
- Arsenal's starters need more urgency; they cannot keep relying on the bench to change games. — In recent matches the substitutes have sparked goals, and early goals are not coming for Arsenal.
- Arsenal will not be the most cohesive, fluent side until they make personnel changes in upcoming transfer windows, but they will still win leagues or go very close. — They play to their strengths and have personnel limitations that need addressing.

Nottingham Forest up against Arsenal. Arsenal won it by a single goal to nil. Um, Eberzi came off at halftime to be replaced by the eventual goal scorer for Arsenal, Noni Madui. Postmatch, Artetto was asked what was going on with Ezi going at halftime >> because I wanted something else and we needed a different kind of profile in that left hand side and uh and I'm here to make decisions and three days ago he played he scored a goal. He could have scored two or three against Leela. He had some really good moments and today was different because the game and what the game required was different and we were in time to to change it and um and that's what happens. >> Martin, does it tell us that that Ezie isn't a player out of favor? It's done for reasons. >> No, I think just on the day they were looking for a specialist winger to be more effective. So when you're playing against a system where effectively becomes a back five with um and they were calling it like a Christmas tree setup in front of them, it was I mean it's their prerogative by the way for Forest to play exactly how they want to and they're playing against Arsenal at home. It doesn't make it for their best of spect spectacles, but it's down to you to find a solution. And a part of that solution was when Nez came off because they wanted someone more direct and and if you if you look at what ultimately happened, Madawi coming on, he threatened this the down the wing a couple of times. Arsenal actually went down the middle which they didn't do too often which kind of drew in the back three. Then the fullback wing back becomes isolated and then Mawaki very cleverly came inside having gone down the wing the first two times he got the ball and they punish them and that's the manager >> that is um it's all bubbling below the surface. The subs need to come on. They've played a massive part this season. The substitutes coming on have been really effective. I think they've scored more goals in the last two seasons than any set of substitutions. Simon's yawning here, but it's a fact that Arsenal subs, you know, the manager has to have his um his finger on the pulse. Yeah. And he certainly did. >> Um and I think that's good management recognizing what you need, what changes you need to make. Um it wasn't the best spectacle in the world, but ultimately Arsenal uh a different narrative to the one being spun at the Daily Mail. But I would suggest that maybe it's the undeniables. They will not be denied. >> Let's hear about the one that's being spun at the Daily Mail. uh Simon so off the Guardians Barney Ronnie at the top of the show. So I wonder if Martin will do the same with Tom Colamosi uh in the mail today who tells >> I'm told I'm told he's a Spurs fan. >> Are you? >> Yes. >> Are you a Spurs fan Tom? You might like to tell us 03717234. Tom Kamosi in the mail today where once we had Arson Wenger's invincibles that's you Martin. >> We now endure Mikuel Artetta's unwatchables. Arsenal may have got the job done against Notting and Forest, but it was scruffy, not stylish. He's right, isn't he? >> I I prefer the undeniables. They won't be denied. They'll be They'll find a way to win a game. They've won 10 of the last 11 games, and we're I can't even believe it's it's a topic. It's a topic because someone's trying to coin a phrase, basically, a journalist looking to move back to London. He's in the West Britains. He wants to come home. Uh he's got nothing out. Spurs aren't Spurs are not doing particularly well. So, he's looking for a narrative and I'm changing that narrative. >> It's stylish enough for you. >> Undeniables is what this we can call this group because they won't be denied Jim. >> The Undeniables. I I like what he's done there, Simon. I mean, it it it's good enough for you, Martin, is it? In all honesty, if this was any other club, would you not be saying, "Yeah, it's a bit scruffy." >> I think you when you when you become champions, you could see all that trust and belief that was there and then it was like a meeting to decide, look, we need to make a change. I mean, Forest you know, they they flicked a switch actually when they went when they conceded the goal and then suddenly had a barrage of opportunities and maybe Forest will get out of trouble. It's interesting that the current manager Glasnner um is if you look at the record last season, there were already two managers gone by this stage last year and he's in the bottom three right now. Yeah. So, it I see him getting out cuz he's very calm and I admire him even more in this situation. But really the more of a story of this is is in Nottingham Forest and and the the plight that they find themselves in. Uh even this is their fifth manager now in just over 12 months. >> Yeah, it's interesting that journalists I mean they did it last year to Arsenal repeatedly and endlessly and there are times when Arsenal not as easy on the eye as people would like them to be. We've seen a team that's been easy on the eye for the last 15 years. How'd they do that? Oh, that's a wonderful little compass that we should be pointing back at. I think that Arsenal played against a side that were determined not to allow the game to be played in a certain way which was their prerogative because they're playing against one of the best teams in the world. So why would you make it expensive so that Arsenal can look good and Arsenal did their job and as soon as it got to the 70th minute I said it'll be one nil to Ars Arsenal >> right >> and that's their job. They've gone away to Nottingham forest which is not an easy ground to play. It's not an easy side and they won one nil and now we're going to turn around and say we've got some clever little monikers that we can attach to it. I think Martin's probably right. They they won't be denied getting three points. They've kept on going till they've got won the game. The job's been done. One noting for job done. Move on to the next one. They backed a little in the middle of the week. >> Fair enough. I mean that and you're quite right and I like what you did from your point of view. You'd rather call the undeniables. Frank Le um who knows a thing about football world cup winner said they were a tough watch. It was a tough watch. It's undeniable. But obviously that you there are two teams here and if you're trying to break that down, it is really quite tricky because no one's coming out and and this there isn't a manager better in in in the country that can set his team out. Let me tell you, Glasnon knows his stuff >> and you're going to have to you're going to have to do well to get beyond him. Hardly any goals have been scored at any of the games that the Forest have played in really this season because he keeps it really tight. >> Let's see if they get out of trouble. >> What do you want to see from them though, Martin? What more do you want to do? Do you want them to move the ball quicker? What's what aren't they doing you want them to do? >> I think there's a little bit of urgency. I think when it's been interesting when the subs have lined up, Jim, in the last three two or three games, they've suddenly scored a goal. It's almost as if it's that, you know, that last 10. You were a boxer, weren't you? That come on, last 10, let's give it a little bit. And that tap of the canvas is the player stood on the sideline. There's a little bit more that comes on the on the pitch, but you can't keep looking to the bench. What you start with needs to to take the initiative. Early goals seem are not really coming from an Arsenal point of view, but that's that can be all worked on. It can all be >> in the league this season, 11 goals. >> Yeah, but you're you're looking at the negative. I'm looking at 10 wins out of 11 >> and that's really how you should do that. I mean, if you're the manager and been asked to face these questions, you wouldn't be too pleased, but you're you're always looking for solutions and you want to get better. And of course, Yarez not scored yet, you know, so there's lots of areas you can you can look to, but it's Bayern Munich coming up next. It's a mouthwatering game for them. >> The interesting one and the narrative that we could spin is when Arsenal went balls out and thought they could out Brighton, they got battered. And I think there is an element I think hersler drew him into a conversation a footballing conversation metaphorically by calling his team out last year and saying they the only team trying to play football. So when he came down to play against Brighton well out football you and they got smashed. >> Said they were asked for time wasting last year. >> Yeah. And he also said the only one team trying to play football was a Brighton >> and maybe Arsen walked into a trap >> and they did a little bit. Yeah, I think so. Arteta got out football and I think there is an element of that they have their strengths. They highlight their strengths. They're not going to be the most cohesive fluent side until they make some personnel changes that they might be able to do in the next set of transfer windows, but they're still going to be winning leagues or very close to it. >> Do you think that Brighton defeat that day has made Arsenal a little bit more conservative than ever? >> I think it's a reality check. >> Yeah. >> You know, I think, you know, in the long run, you might look at that and say, well, that was maybe a good day. A bad day was a good day. You learned a lot about each other because cuz Brighton, it was a bad day, wasn't it, Jim, at the office, everyone had a bad game, but there was a naivity to their performance. They try to keep playing out from the back and Brighton just kept pressing. >> Well, maybe Tom Colamos has got a point. Scruffy. Um, it was it was scruffy, not stylish. Arsenal fans listening this morning, are you perturbed by that in any which way at all? Because it's working, isn't it? You're winning. 03717234. This was anything but scruffy and not stylish. This was magnificent. We'll talk about Brighton and what they did to Crystal Palace, Simon's Old Club yesterday uh down at the AMX. It was stunning. Three up, nine minutes on the clock. No one could believe it. We'll hear from Pascal Gross shortly. It's 11:00 this Monday morning and we're live in talksport with Selco where the trade goes.
