talkSPORT debates Chelsea's title credentials, the Rogers yellow-card call and Manchester United's problems

The show debates whether Chelsea can enter the title race, with one voice backing their lack of European football and firepower while another flags defence and consistency; it then covers Everton's anger over Morgan Rogers not getting a second yellow and Manchester United's structural problems under the Glazers and Michael Carrick.

Abbi Summers and Max Scott discuss whether Chelsea can push on from their first clean sheet of the season in a 2 goal victory away at Everton, and whether their lack of European football could be the key to them having a more fruitful second half of the season than the teams around them. Let's talk about Chelsea because I really think Chelsea can challenge >> come the end of the season. They've not got any European football. They've got a manager who will eventually get his teeth stuck into that defense and that they got their first clean sheet against Everton. They only conceded one the game before in that big 5-1 victory over Bournemouth. So, I think we're already seeing signs and they've got the best front three in the league. And that that's another team and I'm kind of hesitant to say it, but Chelsea are so good to watch. I' I'd much sooner turn on a Chelsea game or a Brighton game and a Brenford game than I would an Arsenal game, a Liverpool game or a City game. Yeah, >> Chelsea's front three are absolutely stunning and I just think over a long season, we're already seeing green shoots of a much more improved defense. >> Why can't they be in a title race? >> They can. They can. And they obviously have a bit more experience this season as well when you've got someone like Jordan Henderson who's actually this partnership with him and Kaisedo is blossoming. You know, it's great to see cuz that was a signing where everyone's like, "What are they doing signing Jordan Henderson? What are they doing signing someone like a Danny Wbeck?" But what Chelsea have always been criticized for is the fact that they've been immature and, you know, they've they've led to their own downfall, silly mistakes or silly red cards. And I think you've got a manager here who attacking wise is phenomenal. We know how good that Jabi Alonzo is in terms of it's brilliant. And they score really early in games as well. So, it's just it's just the defending. But and like you said the last couple games they have shown improvements. They remind me of Brighton in certain aspects that Brighton can be great but then they can have an off day or they can have an off couple of fixtures. Chelsea can also have can do that too. >> I think there's probably they're both in the pack of best of the rest type of thing. I don't think I'd be surprised if they actually could mount a sustainable title charge. And we're sitting here at the end of the season saying that Arsenal and and Chelsea and City have gone, you know, toeto- toe, all three of them. Yeah, >> I don't necessarily think that'll be the case, but I do think that Chelsea will be just behind. >> I think if they keep scoring at the click they're scoring at, they can't not be. >> The injuries are also going to play a massive part. >> I know. Yeah, it's true. But I think they'll strengthen in January with another central midfielder. Alex Scott's name is >> Alex Scott. Yeah, I mean he'll come back from injury. He'll be really fresh. But I'm looking at the table now. Bournemouth are one point above the relegation zone. If they're still in that position, there isn't a world where they sell their best million pounds to Alex Scott. >> Yeah, Bournemouth won't sell him even for 100 million quid. If they're in around the relegation zone, >> just looking at that game at the weekend, um Everton lost two-0, didn't they? I own to Chelsea. There was a I don't necessarily think it's that contentious, but I wanted to get your opinion on it. the Morgan Rogers challenge on Garner. >> Yeah, >> Everton feel hard done by here. >> They think it should have been a second yellow for Morgan Rogers. What's your view? >> I can see why Everton are livid because earlier in the game Harrison Armstrong's got a yellow card for a strong but I think fair tackle on Josh Ashen Pong who to be fair to him, gets straight back up, tries to win the ball back. The referee blows late, gives him a yellow card. So, you're thinking, right, if that's the standard set by the referee, then I can see why they think Morgan Rogers should be sent off. >> They both him and Garner both hit the ball at the same time. Roger's leg kind of stoods up on um the calf of Garner, but it's kind of deflected off the ball. I can see why Evertonians and why David Moyes say that's inconsistent. I think it should we should just live in a world where the referees don't dish out seven yellow cards in a game like they did. They should just let the game play because it creates an intensity in in the in the crowd. Players then feed off it and you get a better product. So I don't think Armstrong should have been yellow carded but I think it was probably in the end now I've thought about it the right decision to not give Rogers a second yellow because him and Garner have both come in strong and it's it just happens sometimes. >> I agree with you. I think it was a 50/50. I think that it's not even I don't personally don't think it's a massive talking point even though that it's kind of been made out to be. I think that both players have gone through it. I don't think there's much in it. I think you're right as well about the you know the dishing out of yellows all the time. Look at last week in in the Liverpool game you know Graham Burch gets sent off and to me neither I mean yes okay if you're already on a booking don't be silly but at the same time I don't think either. I think they were very soft. I really I think and again it just kills the game. kills the product and then you're talking about well was that actually you're talking about that rather than the game and actually Graham B was the best player last week >> um Chelsea title race just finally before we move on from them do you think they're the best positioned to challenge then Arsenal Manchester City because they've only got the one game a week >> yeah in the long run yeah because that precisely because that front three and when Kaisedo's fit they've got a brilliant midfield and I think they've got some depth as well as much as I dislike him for his antics in the World Cup Valentin Barco looks like a really tidy player He comes from goodstock, you know, star man at River Plate in Argentina. So, so I think in the long run, yes. And I think the fact that they're not playing European football, they were playing one game a week, we we saw how knackered Arsenal were at the back end of last season, they're going to be even more knackered this time because they've they've had a World Cup. They'll go deep in Europe. And I just think it's one to watch for because if you're scoring 17 goals in seven games and you keep it up at that rate, you're always going to be a threat. >> Fairs. Okay, let's um have a look at Manchester United, shall we? Cuz that was a one or draw uh at Elmade this weekend. >> United, I feel like nothing's really changed from last week, has it? >> Nothing's going to change until the Glazers are gone. Nothing's going to change until the Glazers stop ripping dividends out the football club because the reality is, no matter how good your signings are, no matter how good your manager is, the fish rots from the head down. It's as simple as that. And we're so tired of talking about the Glazes because it's been going on for so long and it's like death by a thousand by a thousand cuts. Do you know what I mean? So, but we all ultimately know that's the case. >> And so, I can't help but think Michael Carrick as a young English manager who's been given a great opportunity is swimming with two hands behind his back. He's got the same back four as he did four years ago. Um, Landro Martinez was absolutely right to call out Jason Wilcox. And I know it's old news, but when Martinez came off at Halime, United were worse. Yeah, >> he is a leader. And yes, he's not been fit enough all the time and he's not played as much as he would like to, but he's he was absolutely bang on. And so, >> having said all that, a point away at Leads is a good result. >> Yeah. >> The bookies would say that is a good result for you because you've been stinking the gaff out and and I think they've gone, they've shown a little bit of heart. They started well in in the first half. >> Yeah. I I also think it's weird because actually if you speak to United fans, I think they would also say to you that even the performance in the week, it wasn't wasn't the worst they've seen United play either, but again, they're just not managing to get over the line. I think you're right in what what you were just saying about Landre Martinez. I said it in my own video this morning as well. I think he's completely fair to call out the board. I have no issue with players calling out the ownership and calling out the board. My own players did it last year. My only grievance is that if you're going to do that, your performances on the pitch need to be spot on. And when they're not, that's the issue for me. Like, but I know that kind of splits opinion because a lot of people don't think that you you should call out the board. At the end of the day, you're an employee. You shouldn't you shouldn't actually do it. But I think that we kind of want to hear more things. Why do you want him to sit there, for example, and say, "Oh, yeah, everything's fine." If he doesn't feel that way, yes, he's probably going to leave at the end of the season. I think he's out of contract or they have the option to extend. They're probably not going to do that anyway for Leandre Martinez. But all the all the all the issues are valid and the fish does rock from its head. I've looked at it with my own football club time and time again. You can have as many managers as you want. You can have as many players as you want, but when you've got the same culture, >> nothing is going to change. And I think that Michael Carrick inevitably is going to get sacked. Whether or not I think that's fair is a different conversation. But it's just it's just going to happen. And they're going to keep and keep and keep on sacking managers because they don't want to take responsibility for their own shortcomings. >> Sadly, I agree. I I think that is going to happen. I think the writing is inevitably on the wall and it might be just after or just before Christmas, but I think that probably will happen. I think it's a sad state of affairs when a club puts so much on one of their own legends and essentially leaves them out to dry. That's the sad thing. But that's what Manchester United have become. It's nothing to do with the fans. It's everything to do with the ownership.
