talkSPORT debates whether Liverpool should bring Trent Alexander-Arnold back from Real Madrid

The show first discusses Liverpool's form and spending, then turns to Trent Alexander-Arnold's lack of minutes at Real Madrid and links with Chelsea, Manchester City and a Liverpool return. Charlie Austin says he would take Alexander-Arnold back, mainly to keep him away from Premier League rivals, while callers are split over whether he could handle the pressure and whether his path could mirror Coutinho's. No consensus is reached; the debate centres on whether Liverpool should take him back and whether he can cope with Premier League pressure.

Trent Alexander Arnold has been linked with the move away from Madrid this week due to lack of minutes. He started just get this three games in La Liga this season under Jose has been linked with the move to Chelsea Man City as well as a return to Liverpool. Now just before we discuss that let's hear from the Liverpool gaffer Antonio had a sunny's game against Brighton. >> I think they are doing incredibly well this is and they deserved all the praise they are getting and I think there is little doubt there. I think it's a team that is very well coached already. I think it's the third season of of of Fabian. They are very good in every phase of the game. Without the ball, they are for me one of the best teams and and obviously with the ball also they have they have good quality and we have to be at our very best to to to beat Brighton because now they are they are with confidence. But I also see my my my team in a in a in a good place. >> Charlie, you're a Liverpool fan. your your boyhood club. What have you made of Liverpool under Eurola? You a fan? Is he doing good things? >> I am a fan because of what he's done previously with Bournemouth and it's going to it's a step up obviously come to Liverpool spotlights on them. Um I know he's going to come good with the players that that are there with his style of play and they're going to buy into it. You know, contrast with dresser rooms for argument sake. Manchester United's dressing room. I don't see that anywhere near Liverpool's dressing room. They're buying into what the manager says and for me it's all about getting it to click now. They got the players in that can win games. They spent big money, but now the players that they spent big money on need to step up. I need to see a little bit more from them. Um, but ultimately I think we're in a great place. The big signing I almost think it's going to be a snippet as well is Jeremy Jha in the center half. He's really impressed me >> and very important for Liverpool to have got that right. >> Yeah, and they have. They Virgil needed someone to be next to him and they did and they got him someone to learn from. And then Arajo the play right back from Barcelona. What a signing that is as well. And I think Liverpool sign him I think for 30 million I think at the end of the year as well which for me from what I've seen so far it's almost like a no-brainer. >> Are you listen everything you say I agree with but they they keep spending right I mean they became the first side ever to have three 100 million pound players on the pitch at the same time. Does it stop anywhere eventually? Do you go I mean you can't I mean is a manager's job not to coach players and make them better rather than just keep going back to the transfer market. But then you your argument to that is well Man City done it year after year and that's what the big clubs do and that's what they do to make themselves better, bring other players in and coach them along the way. But the players that are coming in they're extra puzzle pieces to make them better. And the players that are not making the grade, they just get moved to side. And that's what you need to do if you want to fight for all four competitions you're in. >> Yeah. But I agree with what you're saying, but like for sake when Jose bought Kevin De Bruyne. Yeah. >> And that wasn't the Kevin De Bruyne that left Man City. >> No. that you're buy for100 million pound you're buying effectively ecatik you're hoping it's the finished article right for Bradley Barcoli you're not spending £100 million because you're hoping to make him >> but that's not the thing is as well them type of players though mate are not instant they're not instant success like you need to remember Floren Vert's 22 now do we all want to see more from him as Liverpool fan absolutely are we frustrated by it yes but he's he's far from the finished article >> yeah nowhere near his pump >> but I don't think you spent the money on him thinking I've got to make him better. When you're spending that kind of money, I mean, he's underperformed massively, right? >> When you're coming from the Bundesliga to the Premier League, it's a different thing. No, >> I don't know if I buy that excuse. >> All right. If you're signing Elliot Anderson >> Yeah. >> the money is instant. >> Yeah. >> Because he's he's >> he knows the Premier League. Floing Verts don't. He's learning that bit. >> Holland didn't know the Premier League when he left Germany. >> He was only 52 million, >> right? >> Snippet. I was just saying. >> No, I'm with you. I totally get what you're saying. I just feel that the players out of air, >> the manager's got the tools to make Liverpool what they was under Klo, and it's now on him to make them do that. >> And do you think he will? >> He'll get it right. >> I do. I think he will. >> Let me get your views on Trent, right? You you sort of forced him out of Liverpool, which surprised me if I'm being honest. The way some, not all, the way some Liverpool fans treated him almost turned their back, get him out the club, burnt his shirt. I was really stunned. Homegrown player. Uh I know he said previously he wanted to stay at Liverpool forever and become the captain. I just think when a club like Real Madrid come knocking and Spain as well living in Spain and you know wonderful weather etc. It's difficult to turn your back. You don't get chances like that throughout your career more than once. >> No you don't. But the hard part for Trent was and is Steven Gerard homegrown scaler. >> But he wanted to leave. >> No but he didn't leave. going to be wanting for that. >> It's all right. Wanting. >> No, I know there is. >> He would have had he not gone to his letter box that day, he might have left. >> Listen, the thing is everybody expects everyone wants their homegrown talent to stay at their football club. >> Of course, >> don't they? I get Real Madrid coming come to them. I think it was the way went about of allowing your contract to run down. That's what infuriated the fans. Not only was he leaving >> that that meant I would imagine that enabled him to get more money for himself. >> Yeah. For Yeah. For him. Yeah. Yeah. for him. What's wrong with that? >> No, nothing. From as a from a player perspective, you want to earn as much as you can because it's a short career. >> There's not many players that are going to turn down Real Madrid, so he's gone. But being a local lad, being through the academy, I don't know. It just hits a little bit different. >> Do you want him back? >> I don't think he'd come. Would I take him back? >> No, no, no. This is the question. Do you want him back? >> I would take him back. Yeah. >> You want Do you want him back? You've got me here a little bit. >> Well, no, you have simple question. >> Okay, >> I'll ask it again if you want. Charlie, look at me. Do you want Trent back >> over Fong? Absolutely. >> So, you want Trent back? >> I would take him back. >> Okay. Why was that so difficult to answer? >> Because it's almost in that bit of if he comes if I'm taking him back that's to the Premier League. Do I want to see Trent Alexander Arnold at another Premier League club? Absolutely not. So, if Liverpool on the table to get him back. The reason you'd have him is to stop other Premier League, not because you want him back. >> He would make teams better. Yes or no? >> I'm a big fan of his. I think he's an unbelievable player. >> And that's why I'm saying it. Like sometimes you got may have to just park it and he comes back, he's going to have to mend a lot of bridges, right? When he comes back, but him playing for Manchester City, him playing for Chelsea. >> Is that inconceivable? >> Oh, that's a horrible thought. That's a horrible thought. It really is. >> Okay. Uh should we go to the phone lines? Uh, I wonder if our if our football fans >> read books, >> read books. Let's start with Steven, Liverpool fan. Hi, Steven. >> O. How you doing, fellas? >> Steve, when was the last time you actually picked up a book and read it cover to cover? >> Um, it's got to be a good 20 odd year ago. >> Yeah, there you go. See, I'm with you, Steve. >> What was it? Can you remember what it was called? >> Uh, it was probably something to do with Live Thought to be fair. Yeah. Uh um um I've got to say part life always good show. Thank you very much. I'm enjoying it. >> Nice. Okay, mate. >> Right, the question is about Tren now. You're Liverpool fan. Were you one of these Liverpool fans that wanted him out the club? >> Uh I was really annoyed. Yeah. When he left and uh I was like sell and that's it, we're done. Um especially when the fans started turning and he didn't perform. So I thought he could have gone out with a bang and sort of played to his potential and he seemed to not like the pressure which is what I think will happen if he ends up at a Chelsea or a Manu. The fans will be all over him and he just really is not going to enjoy the Prem. If he comes back maybe we take him on a loan with an option to buy until we get Bradley back fit and then see what happens from there. >> Would you take him back, Stephen? >> Would you would you take him back if in Janu if we got to January and he was available? Yeah. >> To buy but let's say loan because you said I'm not going to give you the opportunity to say loan because that's that's a no-brainer. I think anyone would. But the opportunity come to buy buy Trent back. Would you do it? >> Uh only if they got a long-term plan with Bradley. If they knew what they were doing with Bradley and they got a plan. But yeah. Yeah. But not stupid money like it would have to be 30 odd mil or something like that. 40 mil. Um >> let me ask you this. Right. You've got first refusal on 50 million and if you say no, he's going to Man City. Are you buying him? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We'd have >> to stop Man City again. Okay. >> Yeah. And I I think mate on the on this one, you can ask the next caller this. Um Bradley, they've clearly got a plan. They've clearly got a plan. So >> yeah, cuz they're not rushing back and he is the future of that. >> Yeah. >> Does Trent make Liverpool better? >> Yes. >> So why are we turning the nose up if he's available? >> I'm not. But >> yeah, I know. That's what I'm saying. Why Why would you turn your nose up? I'm I hope I'm pronouncing this correctly. Is it Rei? >> Yeah, it's Rey. How are you? >> What was the last book you read? Really? >> It was The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins. >> The what? >> Which is the Let them Theory, which is a really good book. >> What's it about? >> Like a like an um I don't know, like a life affirming book and stuff like and it's just kind of changes perspective on things. So instead of if someone's getting annoyed at you, then you just let them and you just kind of go, "Yeah, sound." Because you can't control what they do. >> Okay. Well, this is perfect then for the the Trent conversation, right? So, before you read that, before you read that, what was your view on Trent and what was your view after you read it? >> So, so I rang up when Trent was leaving because I could see the way that Trent's gone is exactly how I predicted it where he's, you know, he's obviously been attracted to the bright lights and he's gone to Real Madrid and it's all this that and the other. and I just said it's just going to be another Philip Coutinho where he left Liverpool as like a superstar went to Barcelona didn't do anything came back to Aston Villa didn't do anything and it was just for a career and I'm sure you could agree with this as well Charlie you want your career to be the best it can be and having that it was just a bit like like Trent now it's just it's s such a shame because he could have been the most appeared player for his club his boyhood club the one that he supports could be the most appeared player he could have won all these accolades like when Steven Manan left back in the 90s or whatever it was, right? He left because he wasn't winning anything and he went to Real Madrid. That's kind of fine. And then everyone's like, "Yeah, Trent can leave because he's won everything." It's like, "Yeah, but if you're winning everything, well, surely you'd want to stay and you know those numbers that you're racking up, you'd want to keep it. Surely." >> Yeah, but at the end of his career, he's gonna have Real Madrid on his CV. No, I totally get >> though because he's he's on the bench. >> Yeah, but he's gonna have Real Madrid on his CV. Doesn't matter what I say, Andy says what you say. At the end of it, he's going to have Real Madrid on it on his CV. Yeah. And that is >> like we said, it takes a a specific person to turn down Real Madrid, Barcelona. >> It doesn't happen. >> It It doesn't. Right. So, at the end of his career, he'd have earned enough for about 10 lifetimes, but Real Madrid is on his CV. >> Yeah. >> And not many people can say that. >> Do you think he'll come back to the Prem? I honestly don't. I I think I can see him going somewhere else in Europe. Oh, >> can you? >> Yeah, I really do. >> Okay, it's interesting.
