who knew me it was brilliant yes yes brilliant mate lovely anyway look spurs are back yeah yeah on their way to the champions league that sort thing you know um first win of the season moved off the bottom of the table with a home victory over coventry i mean look well done to them and one thing for sure is i didn't think it was great gabby at about you but it was a step forward yeah it was it was a step forward listen it was it was about winning the game for spurs but when i'm watching it jeff i'm looking at madison standout player took his goal fantastic um finish from madison they really missed that top-class player in their side. But I'm looking at other players. I'm looking at Van Heek again. He's defending for the goal, Rodoni goal. I'm looking at van de Veen. I'm looking at Robertson. Goalkeeper Kingsky not having him one bit. I still think some of their top players aren't performing. That wasn't a performance that says to me that Spurs are going to go on a run. I think any decent side away from home would have beat Spurs last night. Coventry fantastic against Newcastle great result but away from home they didn't look as bright going forward you know I felt yeah the physical presence up front they were better maybe when Arione come on but for me Spurs still quite poor One thing is it was great to see Dejan Kulusevski back as well absolutely brilliant to see him back they need to keep him fit get him match fit and also they've got to keep madison fit i mean what a strike it was what a strike of a whip um you know to score the opening, go first start since april 2025 he took the talk spoke the talk sport after the game about how he felt doing that after such a long time out no i've never i've never doubted my uh my quality i just want to be available you know my main focus is just being fit and available it's been a tough 18 months for me i think it's been nearly 18 months since my last start so um that was a special feeling for me today to be out there from the start because it's been there's been some dark days in there um not in marbella but previously and uh i had all my family and all my friends who obviously are from coventry where i grew up here today so that was a special moment for me there'll be a few uh angry with me up in the box and i go and see them after but it was all worth it yeah haha look i i thought cool this was pretty decent for yeah very well i thought he's very decent for tottenham as well but madison head and shoulders of anybody else on the pitch for me they've been missing him you know in the last six games we've been playing it's a gnarly fernandez bergvel benton core they've not really had that number 10 in there gallagher's played as well he's got that talent jeff finding space looks easy for him looks like he's got time on the ball you know a proper number 10 even some of his crosses that he was putting in whipping in Slanky's got to do better and kudos to the back post to try and get in there but that's not an easy finish he made it look easy first time whip into that top at them top corner fantastic goal and like you said he's got to keep fit yeah they need him and i think as you said there you know you listed some of the players who've been playing in midfield there madison's capable of something special whereas the others are And I think that's a massive, massive difference. Giving the ball and he's always liable to come up with something. Look at all the number 10s out there. You know, we've been... Virts hasn't done nowhere near enough, but look at like Shirky. Look at my team Aston Villa, Manzambi, number 10 done fantastic. Brendeer when he plays in there, fantastic as well. If your number 10 isn't performing, that's who creates the chances. That bit of flair that you need in your side look at arsenal odegaard when he's been at it in that number 10 position as well you need um gibbs white you know they missed him as well forrest yeah well on the weekend even though they played very well so if they can get madison fit you know luckily they only got one game a week as well Spurs I think they'll do a lot better. Well as ever the sports bar inundated with your calls last night Coventry fan Brian rang in to bring Spurs fans back down to work. Yeah Spurs an embarrassment they're getting out the open top bus for a victory over a newly promoted team. Oh well you're not allowed to celebrate. 92 teams, they're absolutely embarrassment. Open top bus and bunting for a victory of a newly promoted I understand right, bro. It's embarrassing, baby. Hold on, bro. Bro, you're a good side. You won your last two games. You're decent. You ain't mugs. You ain't like Burnley who come up and got spanked every week. You're a decent team. We've won tonight. We needed a win. Are we not allowed to celebrate? You're getting the open-top bus help for this. Well, I don't know if we are, though, are we? There's no open-top bus parade, is it? We won 3-1. Spanked you. For ones that agree with Jamie, with the best will in the world. It's been a long time coming. They're entitled to celebrate. Coventry may be newly promoted, but they're of the same status as Tottenham. Now they're a Premier League side. 100%. But I do look at it inside to myself that Spurs yes Coventry they've started off not so well but a couple of wins very fantastic performance against Newcastle but I don't know Jeff I don't know if the part of me is looking at it and saying I'm seeing the fans I've seen some reply I've seen the bench run on and the manager of a deserve he's like calm down they're jumping on him like guys that's a performance where you know what you didn't play that well you beat newly promoted Coventry well done now the work starts you've been to Marbella for a few days to work out let's play it back free against Coventry we're so scared defensively we're so poor but you still concede a stupid gold as well there's a lot of work to be done because if last night they played a Brighton a Villa again a Newcastle they get turned over that the former doesn't say to me that they're back no that says a K. You started, you got lots of work on. It's a step. It's a step. Chelsea away next. I mean that's a whole different ball game. Welcome back. I think it's going to be a long season for Coventry. I thought Rudoni was their standout performer. I rated him harder yesterday. Thomas Sancy done okay, didn't he? Yeah, he did okay, yeah, but they just lacked that bit of threat and I'm not sure what the boy was doing for the Mamouche goal. I'm really, really not. Be soft. Oh, stand Stand up. Have you seen them given, though? Stand up. Have you seen them giving us a foul? No, I didn't. The way football is now? Yeah, I didn't think it was a foul. It's never going to be turned over. And even if there has been any sort of contact in that that position, stand up, go with him. Do not let Marmouche have a free potter to go because until that moment he hadn't had a kick. Are you surprised though with footballers now? Every game I watch they're all diving around. I'm watching Saka. for Arsenal and every time I watch him love him as a player he's on the floor and you look back at him having a go you know you look back at the replay he's not been touched it's like whenever they feel that they can't get past the player they all dive on the floor can we start booking players for diving yeah because it's happening so much everyone wants to jump on the floor jeff yeah and the refs are just looking at them like i like the way the refs are now they're looking at the players i'm like no get up get up yeah stand up stand up man up van you certainly should have stood up last night that's for sure yes uh spurs fans how are you feeling this morning was last night the day your season finally got underway are you going into the weekend's game against chelsea confident in fact no right let's talk about back pages There's lots of noise about Tottenham. They finally got their first league win of the season, so the Sun has gone with Bangers and Moosh, quite like that one, because they were, well, To get on the score sheet, lots of pictures of James Madison. The back page, mad for it, on the Daily Mail. He looked very happy to kind of get back on the score sheet and back in the starting line-up for Spurs. Madison is back to lift spurs um jeff i suppose from this point onwards you would hope that spurs can put a good run together only for a spurs fan only for a spurs fan but what would constitute success for spurs do you reckon you know it's interesting isn't it because people say they're up and running and they are and it was as I said it was a definite step forward and James Madison anybody who you know knows me will know that he's been one of my favourite players over the years brilliant brilliant footballer Kudis is terrific as well I like being the likes of van der Veen and so on and so forth so but let's not expect that they're going to charge up the league no and and suddenly be contenders or anything like that I mean I had them finishing fifth before the season started before a ball was kicked thought they would do really well but they haven't and now we had sebastian bassong on the show yesterday and he said realistic what's the realistic target for tottenham you know he sort of suggested to 12th, 13th, something like that might not be far off. I think they've got to be looking at top half, but whether it gets any better than that, I don't know. This is one win yeah that's very true but also it's just a shame because they spent so much in the summer didn't they but then I suppose collectively that takes time for a team to gel and the connections on the pitch or maybe you haven't spent very well yes very true very true gabby you know tottenham players they went off to marbella a place you know very well um any away trips that help boost morale during your playing days um i I remember Stephen Gerrard. He spoke about it last week, saying, I'm not sure they should be going Marbella, of all places to go. It's clearly work though. Training camp. We had some trips, of course, but when you've got nine days before your game i don't blame the spurs team going away the manager new players team bonding and getting players back into it but they beat coventry i know i know coventry done well last week against newcastle but i'm with jeff let's not get carried away here let's see how they do against chelsea away yeah that'll be the real show let's show he wants to get on the ball against chelsea away where you struggle year in year year after let's go and see what they've got then and i've got after that palace at home leads away let's see how many points to get out of that next three games I think the next six games are key you know we'll see the real Spurs then because you're right Chelsea away then they've got Palace Leeds, Ipswich, Sunderland, Fulham exactly you know so it's a run of really winnable games can they go out there and win them I'm not convinced about the backbone of the team not at the moment you know the goalkeeper you you know I've never been convinced Rushworth I thought the third goal is oh the third goal for Comrie he's got to do better hasn't he Rushworth there he's got it that was poor he's got to keep but you look at look at early on in the game Sakamoto if he just puts that in a corner it's a goal they were getting through with ease and you look at the Rodonia goal and you're like I mean Van Heck just before we text a shot he gives up on it someone else will clear it and Spurs fans will kick themselves because Voscovic didn't do well against England for Croatia but for Klopp he's been fantastic he was the weekend and look okay they've been candouring home against Palace but Voscovic and look he looked world class he honestly looked world class time on the ball makes great decisions can pass it you know and he and Lewis Dunk wow I mean the experience van Heckel will be fine for Tottenham given time I think you know he's getting used to playing in different circumstances he's in London now you know he's playing for you know a club have been going through difficult times no club have been going through difficult times, not easy to step in he likes to get on the ball he's made some mistakes, no question he's not been himself But I think there's a good footballer in there. Well, you've just brought me swiftly on to this story in the sun. Hey Spurs, just look at me now! As Brighton star Luka Vucevic dug out former club Tottenham saying I can't believe you didn't give me a chance I mean yeah he's got the last laugh hasn't he Yeah it's just very odd like what have they not seen in him because every game I've watched him like I says when they lost was it seven to England and Crescia he was poor in that game along with all the the defensive guardia all of them were poor but every game i watched the brighton has been fantastic just very odd because when i look at van heck i agree jeff he's a very good footballer he's passing through the lines fantastic but he's treading water when he's running backwards towards his own goal you know it wasn't for van de ven covering yesterday thomas asante might have scored we had that chance i think he lacks the pace of the premier league van hecke but the manager must like the way he wants to So play, playing out from the back, finding your number 10s or midfielders. But Voscovic, wow. And Brighton, wow. I mean... Let's talk about ties for contenders. I wouldn't say total of contenders but you look at the Conference League and they can afford to rotate in that. They look comfortable don't they in the Conference League so that for me is not going to take much out of them and you just don't want to play them. That first game of the season i actually watched a wedding reception at a house in a game i kept walking out after a goal and there were these birmingham city fans there it's two it's three it's four you got oh my god i was just like what's going on here and then when i watched the highlights of a fantastic brighton they don't stop they're after you if they score one they want to score two three four five been fantastic and good luck they're a team that no one wants to play just before i go obviously spurs showing that that marbella trip has worked out quite well oh yeah what about a marbella trip for all the talk sport presenters to boost morale maybe alan brazil head of social dean saunders story time and oh you know Hooray parlour with all the cobra bombs. A boost morale. I would be suicidal. Do not make me spend time with that lot. I think we have to share rooms as well. Who would you share with, Joe? Who's the worst, the best of the worst? Well, it would either be you or Coisty. Actually, I'm sorry, it would be Coisty because you know he wouldn't turn up. Get room to yourself, wouldn't you? Magistrate me, Simon. Magistrate me, Simon. Oh my goodness. Aldrin over the air. Who would you share with? Oh! Definitely not Cundee. I was going to say, is it kundi will be during the night walking down the room yeah he can't sit still um maybe brazil because i feel like he just sleep he'd sleep the whole time i feel like he'd just be asleep not to sleep you know what he can be moody sleep sleep sleep yeah good shout what about you kate careful when i just get my own room oh i demand that security guard be outside yeah so look Well, we can bring a couple of TalkSport listeners along on this trip to Marbella as well. Who do you want to share with? 8N89. Which of the TalkSport presenters do you want to share with? 03717 223344. Katie, thank you very much indeed. That was thanks to Costa Express. Dick says Spurs have been poor for years. The cracks were very much hidden by Harry Kane. Rory says, for God's sake, give Spurs some credit for a change. Yes, we only beat Coventry, but they've just smashed Newcastle and have been playing well. And Harry in Battersea says, Jeff, who in the media will be clamouring for Madison for England first? No, actually, I mean, not under the current circumstances. I think we've got too many players in that position right now but over the years at his peak if he stayed fit he would have been well capable of earning more england caps that's my opinion anyway uh coming up with manchester city back and champions league action tonight we bring you the very latest oh god is this again and whether we're any closer to finding out what their sanctions will be that's next the costa coffee break
