Simon Jordan SENDS MESSAGE to Rio Ngumoha after Liverpool breakout!
Simon Jordan and Sean Dyche on Liverpool's defence, Rio Ngumoha and overhyping young players
The show reacts to Liverpool's 4-3 Champions League win over Villarreal and debates whether their defensive issues are a short-term teething problem. It also discusses Brighton's form and Rio Ngumoha's development, with the clear message that he should not be compared to Yamal or overhyped too early.
- Liverpool's current defensive problems are mainly about a new goalkeeper, new centre-backs and a new manager needing time to gel, and Van Dijk is still a top-class centre-back — The unit has not settled after the personnel changes; it is not only Liverpool conceding, with Chelsea and others also paying for open attacking styles while Arsenal and Man City have been more stable.
- If this manager needed so long at Bournemouth to get players playing his way, it may take him even longer to win over big-name players at Liverpool — Big-name players question instructions more, though their physical levels may make it easier for them to adapt and sustain the intensity.
- He picks Brighton to beat Liverpool at Anfield — Brighton are in irresistible form and are playing a style that makes them hard to stop.
- Brighton are unlikely to keep this level up over a full season — Despite their fine start and the quality of Dunk and Vukovic, he would be surprised if they sustain this form across the campaign.
- Ngumoha has a good attitude and is eager to improve, but he is not the finished article and will have ups and downs — He is only 18 and is still adding details such as shooting with his left foot, so he remains some way from full maturity.
- It is too early to compare Ngumoha with Yamal, and he is still a long way behind him — Yamal already has 110 games and 38 goals, a European Championship and World Cup experience, and 37 caps for Spain, so Ngumoha cannot yet be mentioned in the same bracket.
- With young players you should let them play naturally and coach them less, because self-learning is more powerful than constant instruction — At a young age, learning through playing is more valuable than being constantly corrected, and the hardest thing for a coaching staff is to do nothing and let a player mature naturally.
- English football is too quick to compare young players with older stars, build them up and then enjoy knocking them down, so there should be less hysteria and more balance — Building players up to levels they cannot reach only leads one way, and Rashford is an example: a good player, not a world-class one, who was overhyped and then heavily criticised when his form dipped.
- Saka goes down too easily and hits the deck as soon as he looks like losing possession, so his behaviour should not be defended — The speaker says Saka dives all over the place and goes down whenever he is about to lose the ball.

Sean Dich alongside Simon and myself in studio this morning. Sean Dich, Sean, I can tell you proven to be a very popular guest in here by the many messages I am seeing mainly from supporters of clubs that this man has managed. What about the job that Antonyola is doing at Liverpool? Liverpool got there in the end last night in the Champions League at Anfield. S off Villa Royale by four goals to three. Having said that, Sean, this side of that Rayola has got is conceding goals. Is it not? Is that a worry? Virgil van Djk is he the same player as he's been in recent season. >> Well, a couple of players I don't know that much depth about. I can never say it. Ron, that'd be Ron to me. Ronny. Yeah. And Jack Jez. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> No, seven games each for Liverpool so far. Kirz new to it last year as in new to from jumping from a club like Bomb. due respect haven't got the size and the history and the grandeur of Liverpool still finding his feet I think new manager you know to blend that in top class keeper we know that to blend that in and by the way Van Dyk still a top class center half in my opinion to blend that into a unit that can work you know like as well as it can do and keep clean sheets consistently that will take a bit of time I think and and the team in front of him you know different ways of playing different styles I don't think it's just Liverpool by the way I mean you look at Chelsea you know amount of goals they've conceded there's others in the division this this season. I mean the ones who haven't been doing is obviously you know Arsenal Man City but generally there's been some surprises I think with teams conceding goals because a lot of teams some like well Chelsea particularly they want another example a lot of attack like all out open attack at times and sometimes you look at the back going I don't know what's going on here. Yeah, >> I don't know what work they do obviously behind the scenes, but I would think they'd be questioning it in their camp. And I think Areola as well, he'd be looking at it going, "Right, am I am I really got where I'm up to with this team?" No, I don't think he has. >> A lot of people listening, Simon would say, there's no pleasing you lot. If it was a dull, drab n, [laughter] you'd be like, "What the hell?" >> Well, you know, you you it's very easy to highlight the positive points. You've got to be critically fair and and balancing your perspective. It'll be interesting to see how your new found favorite team Brighton go against Liverpool on the weekend because they are a side that can play. This manager, >> it took him a while to get the Bournemouth players into shape to play the way that he wanted them to play. And I remember when Gary O'Neal was sacked and everyone was sort of, you know, taking a deep breath thinking how how's he got the sack here? And then when it started, I think he took his wolves side to Bulma and inevitably beat them. So it looked like there was a sort of you got the wrong guy in there. And it took him to about Christmas to get all of a sudden Bournemouth into a situation where they became a very formidable side. Now if it takes him that amount of time to convince players at Bournemouth the way he wants them to play, it might take him a bit longer to get big-time players at Liverpool. Albeit the capabilities of the bigger time players are easier to adapt or to keep going because they're already physically at that level. So it' be interesting. But I I I think you'll be all right. The big thing for Slot last year wasn't was the way that Liverpool were passive at Anfield and the fans couldn't have it and that was a problem for Slot. He lost the fans after winning the Premier League when people were thinking taking over from Klopp is the poison >> shout. They lost that they lost that high energy way he didn't. Yeah. Particularly Anfield. Yeah. And I think >> I think Riola the way he does it I think he'll try and bring that that energy back in. That's certainly what he did at Bournemouth. I was a big fan of what he did there. And I think also you're right >> I wouldn't use the term big timers but big big players. Yeah, >> probably have a bit not resistance what they do they question things more they probably go well hang on a minute why you know what what's the outcome of doing this and playing like that and I think that's probably new whereas he goes in at Bournemouth I agree most of the B players probably say he's the manager we crack on you know >> the interesting thing was when you got players like EC that are clearly very talented players is he going to get them to do the things that that he will need them to do in terms of pressing >> yeah like verts and people like that >> because he doesn't do it doesn't do that and it's whe is a different discussion I've got I think this manager will come through this certain wobbly period, but the fact they're conceding goals is a problem which he'll fix inevitably at some point. It's if they weren't scoring goals to combat it, he'd have a bigger problem. But we'll see what they happen to because, you know, as you know, as their biggest fan, Brighton are now in such an irrepressible mode of form. I would I picked Brighton to go beat them at Anfield. >> Yeah. Yeah, I mean there's a good chance of I know what you mean that kind of thing. But Brighton's another had a brilliant start to the season. But you look at you look at people like Dunk, you know, what an invaluable quality he's been to them, you know, down the years, you know, warrior the way he goes about it. Old school enough to know the old school of defending, digging, get blocks in, but also modern enough to look after himself, you know, stay lean, stay stay ready for action. And yeah, >> them them players are so so important. Now at Liverpool they got Van Dijk but with the two new ones Ronny and Jez as I called them because I can't say the second with them coming in. No, it's going to take a bit of time. Yeah. Do >> you know what I mean? I I I do appreciate though just to just to say that Brighton obviously got the young boy Vukovic next to next to Dunk magnificent. >> Yeah. Yeah. But over a season I will be very surprised if they continue what they're doing. >> Sean I want before we leave Liverpool and Simon's baiting me to talk more about Brighton which I will do. But um on Liverpool, they have this gem of a player. Rio Ingamoa and Ryola spoke about him following the match at Anfield last night. >> I'm happy with his attitude because he's eager to improve the things that we think he needs to improve. He's eager to add more things to his game. Has changed the the sides a lot. Has played a lot on the right lately. He's feeling so comfortable now. and and I think he's adding even some shoot with the left that he hasn't the score but he's getting there and if he can add this small things not to his game it will put him even in a in a better position and that's the good thing with Rio is still 18 is not the still the full package you know he can add things fortunately for for us also and I hope he continues the same way it's not going to be always like this he will have up and downs in the process but I'm I'm happy because attitude wise I'm seeing him in a great I mean, the boy's not 19 until next August, Sean. He's at a phenomenal football club. What do Liverpool need to do? And of course, they will do it. But what do you do with a talent like this? >> Well, I think I think first things first, I was just laughing with Simon. We're listening to that. You know, they're offering him up as like Yal's quite away in front of that young man yet, right? >> 110 games, 38 goals for Yal. You know what I mean? So, still got a bit of way to go. >> A European Championship and a World Cup. >> Exactly. Yeah. and all the stats and 37 caps for Spain and all that sort of bit. So, let's have it right. He's still he's still a bit way way beyond that. Way behind that, but >> talent. Yes. I think I think what's I think what people forget and I not in the same um style of player, but when we had Jar Bransweight coming through Yes. who's still going great, but you know the period when they thought, well, this kid's going to be the next big thing, which I still think he can be, by the way, and just out of too many injuries. But my point I was going to make is people kept saying to me, what are you showing him? what you coaching. What I was saying, I'm showing him nothing. I'm letting him become a player cuz natural game maturation from learning from the job is as powerful as you coaching. So, I think this young player at the moment, I don't know, but I would imagine early start probably going, "Whoa, whoa, just just ease off the gas. Let him play naturally. Let's not take away his natural finding out of what he what he can do, how he can learn the game." Cuz self-arning is going to be way more powerful at a young age than it is constantly showing them this and that and this and that. And that's that's hard. Now, sometimes the hardest thing as a manager and your staff is to do nothing and let them naturally mature into what they are. >> What we are very bad in this country at doing is comparing players to other players who are further into their careers, building them up to levels that they probably won't reach and then having the great delight in knocking them down. [laughter] And that that's the challenge and one of the things that I don't I don't know whether Lamin was compared to the next person in Spain. I don't know what he was or wasn't, but what we've got is his ability to put people on pedestals like Rashford. Rashford was a good player, but he's not a world-class player. And this constant narrative that was popped out about him being a world-class player. So when he felt below that level, he got the brick bats that followed it. You've got to be realistic, less hysteria, more balance in the way the young players are handled and the expectations of them. And the constant categorization and the building up because there's only one way when you build these players up to levels that they're not at. >> Yeah. >> Is down. And that's what happens to players. It happens to lots of players. >> Brian club say, "Hey, play with a smile, young man." [laughter] >> So that's what they should leave him at the moment. I love it. Play with a smile and soon raise an eyebrow or two by talking about Saka. Your man Saka dives all over the place. I don't want to hear about him. The minute he looks like losing possession, he's down. That was put to Mik Arteta. We'll get to that next. It's 11:00. Jim White, Simon Jordan, Sean D live in Talkport with Celo where the trade goes.
