talkSPORT debate whether Man Utd should drop Bruno Fernandes after his post-match comments

The show discusses Bruno Fernandes's comments after Manchester United's defeat to Como, whether he was publicly questioning Michael Carrick's tactics, and whether his stats and captaincy protect him from criticism. The panel and callers split: some say his pressing and numbers hide poor performances; others say he remains United's most consistent player and the problems are collective. They also debate stripping the captaincy, selling him to Saudi Arabia in January, or using the moment to rebuild without him.

Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent react to Bruno Fernandes' post-match comments after Man Utd's loss to Como and debate whether he should be dropped as a result. One of Man United's players has had a lot to say in the media following that defeat in Europe. Here is what Man United captain Bruno Fernandez had to say after that game against Ko when he spoke to our wonderful friends at TNT Sports. >> It's a decision uh from the staff to to not press uh manto man and and and sometimes leave leave a little bit of space in behind and trying to to get the ball in in the first moment uh to wait for them to give them the ball. But sometimes when when you give too much the ball to these teams, they get confidence. You know, they have so many bodies be behind the ball that make you run a lot, get you make people get frustrated and then obviously when you recover the ball, the the legs are and and the brain are are much more difficult to make it work >> on that then. Do you feel like tactically it was wrong tonight? You made a decision not to press and that's what hurt you in the end? >> That's on on the manager and on the staff to see it is not on me. I just said that uh I think sometimes we have to be more more brave on on the pressure trying to to take a risk of of getting of getting that press very high and making them uncomfortable. >> Well, it didn't end there. Yuri Tielemans also had the following to say when asked what's going wrong at the club. He said it's a combination of everything whether it's tactical, technical, effort, but yeah, we need to try and do better at everything. Um what do you make of those comments? I start with Bruno. In fact, we do both Bruno and Tieleman's comments. Do you think anything is lost in translation or or not? >> Well, whether it's lost in translation or not, it's still the way that he comes across what Bruno said there. Um, you're questioning the manager tactically. That's basically what he's saying. But he um Bruno's got this this weird fact like he's got this thing right where and I've seen it before with certain players where when they they run around and work hard and they press, they're not really doing anything, but they're doing it to make the crowd go, "Look at him. He's look at him. He's working hard. He's running." But most of the time when you do that, you're running out of position. you're you're you're leaving someone else in danger in in trouble and you watch him sometimes he'll go press on his own even though he's got absolutely no chance of winning the ball back because he'll just pop it around him certainly in today's football and that game last night but he does it just to go and then he does this again it used to annoy me where people would do that and then because he's gone off on his own to press and the team weren't set behind him to go up and press with him he turns around and does that throw his arms up in the air as to say to the crowd well I've pressed they're not pressing and I hate that and he's supposed to be the captain but his performances this season have been awful awful this I mean he had the one game against where he scored the atric and it was almost like oh yeah there he is the best player and all. know like those comments last night and if you're Michael Carrick you're looking at that gan you can't like it and then Yuri Tielemans with his comments talking about like pretty much work ethic I mean the basic >> he's responsible for >> you you run around and to be fair you know to be fair to tie last night although on the ball he wasn't great he does often try and run about and get about and try and press but he just hasn't got the legs to be able to do it but for Bruno you're the captain I I think personally too many Man United fans give him a free pass man because I said it before there are so many unwanted stats and things around Manchester United this last few years that's been done under his watch. >> You say give him a free I mean he has been brilliant for Man United in the past. He has. >> Okay. But >> he has hold on. You can't disagree with that, right? >> He's been brilliant, right? Yeah. >> But what has he got to show for that? >> No, I know that >> brilliant is okay. It must be frustrating if you're if you I'm not defending him, by the way. I'm just playing devil's advocate cuz I agree with what you're saying. But if you're in a team where >> you are considered the best and everyone around you is is letting you down. >> Yeah. >> It's very difficult for you. >> Yeah. Because it >> So, I'm going to say you're going to air your frustrations, right? >> I get that. But and I >> Okay, take the game against Leeds, right? >> Yeah. >> What's Bruno's best position? >> As a 10. >> Well, he didn't play like that against Leeds. He played as a 49 play that on the left. So, if you've got a manager that knows your best position is a 10 and you're playing you out of that, it's going to be frustrating, right? And as it told him and then he'll listen to talk sport and he people like you going he's rubbish and he'll be like not playing my normal role. >> Don't don't throw Michael Carrick under the bus when he got your PFA player of the year by putting you back in the 10. >> But now he's putting you out of the 10. >> No, no, don't throw your toys out the prom. He wasn't wasn't >> that is wrong. You are that. You are right. That is >> what I mean. Don't do that. But also I always I always link it and I always do it all the time. Right when you talk about Steven Gerard at Liverpool I played against Liverpool at times though some of the teams that Gerard plays I promise you you would have forgot some of the players that played for that team. They were atrocious. Look what he look at his trophy cabinet and I'm telling you now this Man United team is better than some of the ones he played in and he managed to find a way of winning Champions League. >> I can't disagree with that. >> You know what I mean? So I I think honestly I I genuinely think right too many Man United fans give him because you you look at the numbers and this is one thing you can't deny. numbers are that you you think that that makes sense how many goals and assist and all get that but I think sometimes he hides too much behind that and I I used to say that to you before like he scores at trick against newly promoted side where first off he was anonymous but he scored at trick fair play can't hide and and everyone goes brilliant play against Man City with 10 men nothing but but his stats look good because he's got against >> I can't argue with it I can't I'd like to but I can't so what do you do with him because I sort of feel that Michael car's got a similar problem to when Martinez came out and had a pop at him and then we had leads and you look at our defense you go I can't I've still got to play him cuz we haven't got anything. Just strip him of the captaincy. Just still play him against Bournemouth. >> No, you have to play Bruno cuz you're best player. But >> so effectively he can say whatever he wants. >> No, January. I'm saying if we can get 80 million for him. >> Well, you won't get 80 million for him now. >> Okay. Well, >> is he undropable at the moment? >> Well, cuz he's got nothing else. >> Is he undropable? >> Yeah, but he's he's unable at the minute because of not because of his performances. It's the fact you've got no one else. >> No, irrelevant to the reasons. He's undropable. >> Oh, no. Everyone's droppable. If he came out in the press yesterday and goes Michael Couch's crap, he's going to say effective effectively did that. I'm just saying that. But what I'm saying I'm saying to you is that I get it and a lot of Man United fans will be thinking, well, what do we look like without him? At some point, you have to move past him anyway. And if you look at Manchester United's meek years in terms of the trophies, he's it's under his watch as well. So whether you start whether you play him and you don't win trophies or you don't play him and not win trophies, you're still in the same boat. >> Do you think do you think the modern modern footballers have too much power? >> It's just the way this just the way the game is. >> I know it's difficult to order the multi-millionaires about, isn't it? Yeah, from that perspective, but that's always been the case. >> It hasn't always been the case. >> Well, even my generation, they were still getting paid handsomely, but the characters, the managers and the characters were different. The maybe the football was a bit different. But I think for someone like Bruno January, if you can get a big chunk of dough from Saudi, could you get 80 million from Saudi? >> You think so? >> From Saudi Arabia? Of course you would. At some point, you're going to have to move forward. And even if, again, I say it before, it's going to hurt. Moving forward is going to hurt because I've seen it firsthand. And your and your fall from grace is a lot further than ours because you won everything. >> We haven't >> and dominated for exactly decades. >> So your fall from grace is a lot worse than ours. >> It's if you moving forward with Manchester United at some point have to move on from it. And if that's the manager, Bruno Fernandez because some of the players that Manchester United now shouldn't still be there at all. They shouldn't. >> Have you ever been in a manager in that situation where you all got together and spoke about the manager behind his back and eventually it led to him going? >> Not really. >> Have you seen it going on? >> You see little whispers in the dress. Of course you see them over there but it's more so the players are not playing like the ones who are playing like the ones you're playing week in week lines he's fine him he's don't care playing weak >> or the ones who just got there like believer >> okay well listen we'll put it out there to you like Man United fans do you think any Man United fans will phone up and back him >> do you know what would be interesting you know you dropped if you dropped him against Bournemouth >> and one >> that I mean that's I mean if as a side and I like Bournemouth and they can earn you but they are beatable they've not got to start at home right >> I don't know if that helps or not but >> no if If he was to drop him and win, then all of a sudden Carrick goes, "Hold on. Okay, I can start to maybe get a bit momentum going. Build something." But at the minute, it just looks like, you know, Bruno. Oh my goodness. Struggling. >> Okay. Any United fans back, Bruno? >> I've got a six. Wow. Have that. Um, six runs to win. Two balls. Clap to six. Thank you. Win two wickets. >> Uh, no. Yeah, you'll get some Man United fans that will back him 100%. Because they they love him. >> Okay. Man United fans, you can call in 03717234. What do you make of all things Bruno Fernandez? We'll take your calls in just a moment. Should we go to the phone lines? 03717234. We're talking about Bruno Fernandez. Right or wrong? I'm guessing everyone's going to say wrong. Sean is a Man United fan. Shorty, >> feeling mad. You all right? >> Good, man. How are you? >> Yeah, not too bad. >> What would you like to say about Manchester United and Bruno Fernandez? >> Yeah, look, I'm gonna offer a bit of defense to Bruno to be honest. >> Um, look, last night individually, like what he done, fair enough. You shouldn't really come out and talk about your manager like that. So, I I think he's wrong in that aspect, but I kind of get it. Like I I feel a bit for him because he's obviously frustrated. Like you look like I'm a United fan and all I've seen all day, you know, if on social media and from various people is just Fernandez, Fernandez, Fernandez. Like he's easily the most criticized player at United right now. I know collectively did him get a lot of hustle, but when you move to individual players, it's always Fernandez, Fernandez. Like this is baffling to me as a United fan. He's the only one who's consistently performed year in year out. Like since Ferguson left, you could probably count the amount of successful signings on one hand and he's up there. He's off the back of Premier League player of the year and breaking the assist record. And yet he still gets absolutely hammered by everybody day in day out. I do get it. He is the captain, but I mean he's not a miracle worker at the end of the day, lad. You know, there's still 10 players on the pitch that still have to perform. >> But Sean, I just think sometimes he's almost like people think, "Oh, it's not his fault because he's doing these things." And yes, he's listen, there's been times he's been fantastic, but I was to Andy earlier, there's been a lot of bad stuff that's happened to United post Fergie in terms of trophies won and and kind of the meek he is that have been done under his watch. Yeah, and I do get that point, but like I said, like he can't make 10 other players around them be brilliant if if they're just not like >> Gerard did it. >> I know, but I still think he had better better players around him. >> Oh my goodness. >> I I need to get up some of these players that play. There's players you forgot forgot about. Ego Bishk. Remember him? >> I know, but we've got Dallow, >> mate. He's a Portuguese international. >> Who? >> Dowo. And when you thought of you loved him. Yeah, but I I didn't love him, mate. You see um Deon McGuire last night? That must be the two slowest center halves ever. Oh, >> by the way, super super smash TV. I found it. Oh my. You found a picture of it, not >> Super Smash TV. It was >> uh Le Man United fan is up next. Hi, Lee. >> Hello. >> Hi, Lee. >> Hi. Can you hear me? >> I can hear you loud and clear. What would you like to say? >> Yeah, I I think that they should oust him. I I just think that uh like he's a brilliant player, don't get me wrong, but I think this could be a a moment for for Carrick. Like if he asks him, he's not a systems player. He relies on individual brilliance and it could be a way to rebuild the team without somebody like Bruno. He's already over 30. He's only got a few years left. I I think this could be a really good moment for Man United to to use it as an excuse to drop him. Do >> you know what? It's a great It's a great shoutly. Yeah, it's a good cuz against Bournemouth I understand potentially. So honestly pure people are throwing in names Liverpool player Heno Latalak Cinema Pong goal man's been winning the Champions League with these mans >> I mean they're good players don't get me wrong but you get my point but no that that leave what he said there um if this is the game and Carrick's not happy about that and he he makes a state a stand and he he he drops it and you get a performance all of a sudden Carrick's like hold on a second here we're on to something here. Yeah, >> but by playing >> can't I mean there are only so many players you can drop like Rashford's now not playing take Bruno out of it and you look at the teams it's like we two of your best players are on the bench >> but what I'd rather two players on the pitch that have got the right attitude even if they're not as good in terms of ability as opposed to I don't know what's going on with Rashford >> I have no idea what's going on there >> I just don't know what's going on behind the scenes something is badly broken at United we we'll never ever win the league with Ratcliffe and the Glazers there that just will not happen >> you won the league with Glazers before >> from where we are now from now on >> cuz we won the league because we had Fergie >> and David Gil. We will >> Yes. But I'm saying they bought it whilst Man United were in their pump. >> Yeah. So David Gil and Fergie were the ones who like >> Yeah. But you're buying a club which is already successful. Yeah. >> From where they were after Fergie left to wherever you want to go with them in charge, Ratcliffe and that we will never ever win the league ever. >> I was I was looking at your signings though and even your recruitment man. you recruit, you've signed good players, but you haven't signed game changers where you go like where Arsenal City are fighting to get these players. >> Table players >> Santos and Tielemans aren't the signings that you're pushing for the Yeah. Yeah, I hear that.
