Jeff Stelling calls Jamie O'Hara's "best football" claim laughable

talkSPORT discusses whether Spurs are playing the best football in the Premier League and later turns to Newcastle's troubles. O'Hara says Spurs are back and playing the best football, while Jeff Stelling and Sebastian Bassong reject that because Spurs are bottom with no wins and few goals. Bassong also says Spurs' issues are psychological and in the final third, and attributes Newcastle's struggles to Eddie's departure, lost key players and the absence of Dan Burn and Bruno as defensive protection.

Jeff Stelling and Stuart Pearce are joined by Sébastien Bassong to discuss Spurs and Newcastle. Subscribe: https://youtube.com/c/talkSPORT?subconfirmation=1 🏆 Ready to win? All eyes will be on North London tonight. Spurs hunting for their first Premier League home win of the season. Uh, and who better to do it, well, first league win of the season, not uh just home win. Uh, who better to do it against from their perspective than ex-Chel man Frank Lampard's Coventry. But are Spurs back? Jamie O'Hara thinks so. >> And I'm watching our overall play of Spurs. It's actually quite exciting. >> You're doing all right. >> I think we're actually probably playing the best football in the Premier League. Spurs are back. >> I do. I think we're playing the best football. >> Spurs are back. >> Well, we just We haven't got the wins yet. We ain't got the results. >> Spurs are back. >> Why you looking at me like that? Why you looking at me like that? I actually No, I'm I'm being serious. I'm being I'm telling you, mate. When you watch us play football like there is we look we look >> Say sorry sorry say that again. >> We are playing the best football in the Premier League. >> Spurs are back. >> But it hasn't it hasn't it hasn't happened. We ain't got the wins yet to be kind. It's laughable. It's laughable playing best football. It's laughable. They are bottom of the table and you know has Jamie forgotten what happened to them. They got battered at Brenford. They got done up at home by Newcastle. And we've seen what Newcastle have done since. They've lost at home to Aston Villa. They haven't scored a goal in the league this season before the 86th minute of any game. And they're playing the best football in the Premier League. Goodness gracious. >> I think if they can keep this scintillating form up, it Arsenal and the rest of the league will be absolutely delighted. You know, >> incredible. [clears throat] Uh got Ohara and Kundi, of course. Uh have a watch along on the talk sports sports bars YouTube channel. Uh and of course the uh game Spurs Against Comedy is also live and exclusive on Talk Sport. Um dear goodness me, where do you go after comments like that? Join. Yeah. No, no, no, no. Seriously. And joining us now is a man who knows all about the ups and downs of life at Tottenham Hotspur. Somebody who's faced uh Super Frank Lampold on the pitch as well. A very good morning to Sebastian Bassong. Morning, Sebastian. Morning. >> Morning. >> What do you think? You've heard Jio there. Do you think Spurs are playing the best football in the Premier League? >> Ah, I'm Listen, I'm sorry. I like Jimmy, but honestly, but it's it's laughable because it's really laughable. You can't regardless what you think, regardless how deep you are into your club or your emotional driven, we are in a result driven business. You can't say that we're playing the Spurs is playing the best football when you got you ain't got to win. You haven't scored that many goals. You know, it doesn't make no sense. So that's why I was laughing because Jamie is always a bit on the edge and over the top what he's saying >> just a just a tiny just a tiny bit just to be respectful. But yeah, I disagree. >> Sebastian, how are they going to turn this home form around? That's it's been a you thought new stadium. um fantastic environment to play your football certainly for the home side you would expect but they've just failed to get the uh the wins and the results at Tottenham you know to take on the road with them to >> be to be honest with you Stuart I think it's a bit of it's more of a psychological block than anything else because as you said everything is there for them to perform home stadium and back in a couple of years back they were pretty good at home but Now it seems to be something blocking them or some sort of boogeyman in the closet that enable them to really unleash themsel and get the win because at the end of the day I've been to the stadium many many times and the atmosphere is great for them to perform but I always say that it only takes especially with the way they play. I'm not saying they play the best football with the way they play there's some positive sign. Yeah, I got to say, but they got to turn it into a win. A win. I'm saying a win, which I think for me it's going to unleash other wins. But to take that to get that one over the line, it takes way more than just getting going on a run to not be being be unbeaten. >> I mean, when you looked at them preseason, some of their signings, their defensive signings, you know, John Paulo Van Hecker and Marcus and Andrew Andy Robertson, you you thought, yeah, they they've done some great business here. But it is taking time for them to settle. >> I I've seen them playing I watched them playing in preseason a few times and yeah they brought some good players in. Now going forward for me is the hardest thing. Scoring a goal in football is the hardest thing to do. to get a good defensive base is kind of you can do it with good players. And Robertson, Seni, I Hecker, they're all good players and they're deserving players, but I think defensively they kind of settle down a little bit. They don't concede as much as they used to do at the start of the season, but the the mental block is going forward. And when I say going forward, it's not only the attacking players, is the whole going forward system. And I think that's where they're struggling defensively. I find them okay now, right? Compared to the start of the season, >> I'm just looking at their for their form at the moment and and you know what jumps out of me. What jumps out of me at the moment is they've only scored three goals. That is incredible for a Spurs side that have, you know, historically Spurs have got a reputation of being a bit more free flowing, free scoring, but three goals says it all really. >> It it does says it all. You know, going to the when they get to the final third, this is where I mean everything stops. Whether it's being a bit of a lucky, not being I don't know creative enough up to the final third. Yeah, they're playing good football, but in the Premier League is not enough. So, when you don't score that many goals and other teams now, they they know that they're not as good in the final third. I think they get they get the edge on it. And even the Spurs player when they get to the final third, they they got the brakes on a little bit. They can't for me it's all mental and psychological. As soon as they're going to leave that, they're going to score one, two goals, and I think the attacking players going to be back to themsel if I can. if that makes sense. If >> yeah, you know, things get no better. You know, Savio Cinho, if you like, one of those players brought in to create to score as well, going to be out for a number of weeks, having picked up an injury as well. And Comry will fancy this. You know, uh, one back-to-back games, no starry players, a lot of players getting Premier League chances that they might not have expected. They'll certainly fancy it. Sebastian, while we got you, um, Newcastle, bad week to say the least. How concerned are you about another your old sides there? I'm a I'm concerned due to the fact that they started kind of okay and that gave people false hope that maybe they could have gone the right way but with the the departure of Eddie how for me even though they've lost in the last of the course of the last two season they lost key players Ed leaving for me is the the the main thing and they're gonna struggle they're gonna struggle for the simple reason that they don't have the players that is required to go on a run to to perform. But the the good thing with Newcastle is the Spark is the Georges is the the fan base. And I think based on that, they're going to have the extra bit that's going to allow them to to stay in the league and to perform I think better. But you they're going to need time. They're going to need a lot of hard work and a lot of patience because so many thing have changed and they need time to settle down. Uh where would you consider a Newcastle finish this year as being a decent finish? I you know you know the European places may be a little bit too much for him but where would you consider with a new manager the players leaving be a decent finish in your mind? I'd say 1213. >> 1213 would be decent according to what happened, the number of losses, the the manager departure and [snorts] the the you know the noise around the clubs. So yeah, 12 13 will be decent for them this season. >> Am I a bit harsh in thinking they've conceded in the last 16 consecutive home games? Is there a bit of a soft center at the heart of their defense? I think Dan Burn has been hasn't been playing for a while and he is for me he's the talisman. He's the one he's the the player that represent the Georgie heart and the the quality and he's been great over the last of the couple of couple of season and I think they've lost Bruno Gimme in front of the defense. So the defense they need shield they need. I mean the whole defensive unit has been in balance. Not only the defense cuz when people when a club a team concensive unit has been hasn't been working properly and Dan B is going to get back in the side ASAP. >> Yeah. Brilliant. Completely agree with this Sebastian. Sebastian, thanks very much indeed for joining us. >> You're welcome. Thank you. >> Thank you. and they need he's he's dead right. Dan Burn, you know, he is their talisman. There's no doubt they need him back in the heart of that defense sooner rather than later. Um, and that was the former Spurs and Newcastle defender Sebastian Basson.
