Henry Winter backs Michael Carrick: United were poor but Carrick clearly cares

The show reviews Manchester United's draw with Tottenham at Old Trafford, criticising United's midfield and recruitment balance while questioning Spurs' finishing. The guests argue Carrick genuinely cares and that fan frustration also stems from recruitment, ownership and the need to strengthen the defence.

But we're going to concentrate on Man United won. Tottenham won. Man United had a onegoal lead which many people thought they didn't really deserve. They were playing against 10-man Spurs uh at Old Trafford. But Spurs got an equalizer through Dominic Seni. And Michael Carrick, the manager, gave his thoughts after the game. And >> obviously it hurts. You know, it hurts a lot. It's not nice to go through. Sometimes you have to go through it. That's how it is. You know, we I care as much as anybody about this place. So sometimes you could say too much cuz then it overspills, but it's um it's coming from a good place really. And so I understand it. Um but yeah, of course it's not nice to have to go through that. Uh I thought the players dealt with dealt with it well to be honest and and and used it coming out, especially in the second half. Even before the changes, I thought there was a uh you could see that we were starting to look more like ourselves. U we just had to make changes to try and freshen up that a little bit more, which um which we got the benefit of. and and um made a difference. >> Uh poor old Henry reeling from the fact that Thin Lizzy's song there, the boys are back in town is 50 years old. >> April 76 in Lizzy. Have you ever seen them? >> Saw obviously what 20 30 years ago I saw them. They were fantastic. I mean saw them in 79. >> Absolutely brilliant. >> Sort of a new version of them. >> No, no, no. I think Yeah, they they were outstanding. >> Doesn't really work without him, does he? >> He doesn't. Yeah. No. Anyway, we saw your um your good friend Michael Carrick there trying to explain what was a pretty poor performance, accepting in many ways that it wasn't a great performance. It was mixed. He called it and to be fair, he wasn't really celebrating getting a point, was he? He was like, I don't know. >> I'm not even sure running out of answers. >> I think you're being quite kind to them. I thought it was really poor. uh to average teams. I thought Spurs were well worth their point if they'd had a better finisher >> even though Soleni took his goal well. He did. Um he really worked Martin over. Yeah, he I mean he he he should have done if he'd been a bit more clinical. >> Maybe a run of games free from fitness psychologically whether that affects him he will come good. But yeah, coming back to Manchester United I thought they were poor. I just thought that until Bleaba came on, I thought their midfield was too open. I still don't understand it and I agree with the United fans who were saying it over the summer, why do we need Andre Santos and Tielemans. I understood why they went for Tielemans because he was getable and he was a sort of decent name, but I think he possibly gets in Bruno Fernandez's way and I think you do need to, you know, you need another defensive midfielder alongside Kobe Mayo. So, >> so what is Tieleman's then? I don't I think he should be on the bench. I just don't think that he's got that acceleration, that physicality, that mobility, that awareness to get back and and help out and which is not a strength of Bruno Fernandez and effectively you're just leaving Kobe Mayu to do it. So look, Biba and Mayu absolutely and the money that they spent on Andre Santos and you Tielemans I wish they'd spent on a defender. You were quite a fan of Tielemans when he used to play for Leicester back in the day, were you not? >> Yes. >> Yes. But and and he was clearly a big part of that team at the time. >> Scored a goal in the cup final. Yeah. I mean >> probably I don't know wasn't quite as good as >> he had some good moments at at Villa >> but was more consistent than Leicester probably. >> Yes. Yeah. >> And so it a bit of a surprise that United went for him then. Um, I think there was maybe a desire that they saw someone who was a name who was getable. They were clearly wanted to address the midfield this summer, but I just think that with Casemiro going, you needed more defensive-minded midfielders, but Labour absolutely makes sense. I was surprised he didn't start, you know, he had sort of three weeks of the international break when they could maybe have some games behind closed doors and bring up more. Mhm. >> He did play one ankle as >> well. Well, there you go. Good. I mean, maybe he needed, you know, one more, but anyway, he was I mean, he has to start nowadays because that defense hasn't got much pace in it and he needs to be shielding that defense. So, yeah, I thought it was I thought it was disappointing. I was surprised. I know you always sort of think I'm a um overly praising Rashford, but I thought he could have come on earlier. I thought if you're playing against 10 men, just unleash some pace, whether it's out wide or through. >> He came on very late, didn't he? It was 88 minutes or so, maybe slightly earlier. So, yeah, I thought it was Yeah, I mean, they've got problems in defense. And look, we can blame Michael Carrick and I think if anyone cares about Manchester United, and millions, hundreds of millions probably around the world care about Manchester United, he absolutely does. You know, he is embedded in the club as a player emotionally. He always has from a from a young age. So, yeah, he absolutely cares. just because his demeanor in that press conference clip that you've just shown there, he isn't out there sort of exuding Fergie style defiance or or Mourinho type verbal pyrochnics. He cares. >> There's a feeling that the crowd did turn though probably for the first time together on Carrick yesterday >> before half well at Halime and at the end. And I mean I don't know how considerable uh a section of the support it was because Manchester United in fact have been remarkable in the last what's it 13 years since Sir Alex left >> amazingly staying behind the the team. But I think they're they're cute enough to know that it's partly an issue of recruitment. It's partly an issue of ownership. It's partly an issue of just targeting midfield where the defense was crying out for help. >> Quick bit on Spurs. you mentioned about Saleni there, but the thing about Senanki is he's no prolific goal scorer anyway. Never has been really about highlighted on match last night, but it's kind of well known that that was an outlier that season. Basically, he doesn't get double figures and you're relying on him >> as the main target man. >> Injuries, I mean, it's part of a broader debate which we've had on the show about where have all the number nines gone, but actually there's a place in the England squad. >> Gen, I'm sorry. No, no, but but but actually there if he was flying and was actually scoring goal after goal, it's not like being a number 10 where England got loads of number 10s, you know. He is he's he's got to start taking some of those. >> But just quickly, I did think Spurs played pretty well like a bottom of the table team. >> No, I thought I thought Gallagher was uh was excellent. Uh Celesti at the back was good, but they've got a good manager and deserby. I didn't quite understand all this sort of doubt and we're going down and well as you say one of them United Chance yesterday which was a little bit rich. >> I'm amazed you didn't mention Archie Gray. We got away with it. Well done. Next we'll focus on Oscal V leads and a man who knows both sides well joins us. David Olyri.
