going. You never know. Okay. Um, everybody has jumped on the comments postmatch in Madrid the other night of Manchester United's Argentinian defender, Lisandro Martinez. Because Martinez went into post-match interviews with one thing in his mind. I'm going to bring to light what I really think the way the hierarchy at this football club is operating or more importantly, most significantly not operating. This was just a reminder of Martinez speaking postmatch on Amazon Prime. >> I have to control myself a lot, but sometime is a reflection of the of the mirror of how is our club at the moment. You know, we did a fantastic season last season and now we we expect more from from the top. >> But what you're saying is you expected more investment in the squad in the summer. >> Yeah, 100%. I expect more from our tonical director. I have to be honest, you know, and also it's al important when you make an on a strong squad to be ready to this kind of night. Last season, we did everything. We create the base. It's annoying disappoint coming here. And is the problem the manager wasn't backed enough in the summer in terms of investment. >> I don't think so. I don't think so. He does he does his best. >> Often in this situation, it's the manager who is the one that is is removed. You can't necessarily go up. you start changing changing changing manager and but what about other areas I can I can't say more it's easy to say the coach it's easy to say the the the players but also we have to see others others areas now that he's a time to think last night he decided to put out a statement on Instagram and you might have thought Martinez might have his approach might have been sorry far from it after the match I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we wanted those who know me know how I live football with passion, commitment, and a huge desire to win. Well, he's a World Cup winner. But he goes on to say, "My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honors." Simon, significantly, when I talk about wanting more. I'm talking about the ambition we must all have as part of this club to keep growing, become stronger. Significantly, no apology in there. So he stands by what he says and good luck to him. >> No, I don't think good luck to him. I don't agree with what he said. But I also think if you've got something to say and you've said it, what you're apologizing for. The only reason why people ever apologize is because they're cowards and they don't want the consequences of what they've said. >> So I respect him for not bowing down to um the conventional wisdom of sniveling away and saying I'm sorry when you don't mean you're sorry in the slightest. You're just trying to manage a situation. It's far from that. >> Now he's out of contract at the end of the season. Perhaps he doesn't care. And we all know that the discussion that we were having the other day with myself and Danny was predicated upon the fact that we think that uh that is in part driving some of his motivation that he doesn't feel that he's been looked after as he'd like to have been looked after. Doesn't have a new contract in the office, hasn't got the money that he wants. All of those things might play a part if you want to look at it that way. >> Well, well, I that's how I think it is in in reality, but I don't look at him and say that his motivations are as true as others would suggest. you know, his performances are a mile off. Whoever wants to make a case from him, I would always say, are people that probably haven't never run any businesses, probably really don't know the experiences of what it's like to own and run spaces and have people that are supposedly working for you. >> Yeah, I get that. And the difference the difference between that and sitting on the outside with a pen saying, "Wow, he's absolutely right. He should break the code of silence." >> No, but and and I know where you're going with that, but people who are saying that are people you respect. Matthew Side, respected journalist in the Times. He was on the show the other day and you were complimenting Matthew. >> Sure. And he was completely wrong about the subject of tennis as well >> for the standard of the work that he does. Side in the times this morning. To be honest, I'm kind of on Martinez's side. I think he was right to go after those in the shadows. I think he was right to shine a light on what has gone wrong within the hierarchy of the club. Indeed, I think that when a club are being comprehensively mishandled, the code of silence can turn into a wall of protection. A wall of protection that shields those who make the big decisions, rarely face public scrutiny, and leave head coaches and players to cop the flack while they turn a once great club into a passing imitation of the Keystone Cops. >> Yeah. Well, I mean, a journalist would think that. It's like because I was >> Why would you automatically think that believe it? >> Because it's grist to his elbow to be able to write about it. So there was a surgeon once upon a time that used to be called Gary Gilmore that you send all your players to and if you got a bad groin, it would end up being called a Gilmore's groin because every player that went there ends up having surgery because that was self- serving. So every time an article gets written by a journalist, it's because a journalist has a view upon the fact because he wants to write an article about it. So I look at it and say, "Yes, this should be truth spoken to power. Of course it should be true spoke to you're not speaking to power. speaking to the media and you're utilizing the media to impart a message that you're perfectly capable of being very robust about to the people that you're employed by. >> It's been effective for him. >> Martinez Martinez, >> what do you think it's going to achieve? First of all, Jason Wilcox won't get a bin on the back of a of a player that's not even performing at a level. Second of all, Jim Radcliffe, what do you think? Do are we laboring under the illusion that Jim Radcliffe glazes to one side, Jim Radcliffe doesn't want a successful football club? >> Of course not. >> So, he wants a successful club. Hang on. He wants a successful football club. He tips his money into it, all right, to be successful. Everyone else that sits behind it that gets to make money out of writing about football, gets to make money about playing football, the guy that actually puts the money into the football club, that actually puts his own financial jeopardy into the conversation is the person that doesn't want success. >> But you always bring it back to money. Money aside, do you not think for making it about money, Martinez believes what he's saying and is speaking from the heart. >> I'm sure he believes what he's saying. >> There you go then. I'm sure he has I'm sure he believes what he's saying because his motivations aren't as true as we're trying to retribute to him. We're trying to say what a wonder he he is the Woodward and Bernstein of his time. >> We're not saying that >> he is he is speaking truth. He's got the courage of his convictions. >> Well, as Matthew get on the field and play side says, I can't help thinking that breaching a code of silence can at times be a positive thing. which is the players and head coach who face the cameras after every defeat who must stand up and be counted while the men who make the most important decisions never have to explain anything except to each other. He's right. >> Oh yeah. Right. So when every time so when you're hemorrhaging himself so when you're hemorrhaging money bleeding out of your eyes financially having to bankroll these people that never achieve things without your support right >> you are getting no but hang on because it because well it's all about money. the reasons why Manchester United might not have spent the kind of money that they think that the uh um the players think they should because they haven't chosen to. So, it's about money. The whole conversation is about money. How much investment man United have put into the playing squad. A player that's actually advocating for better players to come and take him out the side. Well, they ain't going to be that's not going to be difficult because his performances are bloody useless. We saw how boss destroyed him on the weekend. If they'd been half a decent finisher at Saleni, Tottenham would have bked Man United. You go with Martinez on a personal basis, citing the fact that maybe his for because of his lack of decent form at the moment, maybe he shouldn't be saying what he's saying. The fact of the matter is he's brave enough to say this because he clearly believes it. >> He's Well, you I say it's not bravery. I say it's self motivated opportunity. Opportunism >> to what end? >> Because or get a new deal because >> I don't think he's thinking about >> because I think he's thinking about himself. I don't think he's thinking about Michael Carrick. And when it comes down to it, we we we had these debates on the phone yesterday with various callers. I get the fact that you wanted to beat Atletico Madrid. You're telling me you're not good enough to beat Hull. You're telling me you're not good enough to beat Everton. You're telling me you're not good enough to beat Fulham. When you have those conversations and you come short against those that you wish to eclipse, right? And you think, well, I should be at that table. We should be able to deal with Atletico Madrid, but we can't because we're not being backed enough. But you have been backed enough to beat Hull and you have been backed enough to beat Everton and you have been backed enough to beat Fulham. And what's that about then? Oh, I tell you what that's about. That's about Carrick and you lot not doing your job and having the audacity the moment it's coming your way. Previously it's been Glazes are this, Glazes are that Radcliffe is this, Radcliffe is that amarim is this amaran is that. The moment it's come to the players now you got an outburst. Tell me that that's not indexed. Tell me that these selfish sods are only interested in what's the best outcome for themselves. They're not interested in collective. You include Martinez in that. >> I'm I'm making it about players like Martinez. >> I honestly don't know who they think they are. I I really don't. >> But many United fans told us yesterday Martinez is saying what Ratcliffe should be saying. >> And the reasons why they're saying >> finger is being pointed. >> The reasons why they're saying it is because they they hate the Glazers. It doesn't matter. The Tottenham Tottenham fans don't like Daniel Levy. It doesn't matter if Daniel Levy did wonderful things for the football club. It'll only be what he didn't do that they dislike. M and when we talk about the way the sport is going, all of these people that are campaigning for an independent regulator that wants to turn football clubs into businesses cuz we've got the regulator running around now telling they got to change the way they run the business and run them like a business. Well, I tell you which football club runs it like a business. Manchester United. That's what you want English football fans. You want a regulator. You want every single football club to run like a business. You're going to get 92 Manchester United sooner rather than later. Martinez, no apology. He stands by his words. Is he right to do that? United fans, now the dust is settled on his comments postmatch. Was he right to point the finger upstairs at the hierarchy? They need to do more. They're not doing enough. 03717234. And digest this as we go into this break. Talks representatives working on behalf of Antonio Conte have contacted Manchester United to say he'd be open to the job if it became available. We see Mr. Jordan thinks about that next. We're live in talk sport with Selco where the trade goes.
