Darren Bent CLAIMS the ONLY manager who can take over from Michael Carrick is Eddie Howe!
Darren Bent: Eddie Howe is the only man to replace Michael Carrick
The show debates whether Manchester United should sack Michael Carrick after the heavy defeat to Como. Darren Bent says the board must either back Carrick or replace him, and that Eddie Howe is the only suitable candidate; callers split over giving Carrick time and whether ownership is the real problem.
- Carrick does not necessarily have to go; it depends on whether the United hierarchy believe he is the right man — If they back him, they must sign the players he wants in January; if not, they should replace him
- If United decide to change manager, Eddie Howe is the only suitable candidate — Howe is good in turmoil, a strong coach who improves players and identifies talent, is out of work so no compensation is needed, and at Newcastle he won a trophy and reached the Champions League, taking them as far as they can go
- Eddie Howe is not a guarantee, especially given his poor record in Europe — He was reminded that his European record is awful, so changing to him would not guarantee success
- United are not as big as they think; they are only big in revenue and name, and need a manager who can take over a mid-table team and do well with poor resources — He sees Howe as that kind of coach and believes he can improve the current squad
- Bruno talks about tactics as captain, but United might be better if he kept the ball; some of the club's unwanted recent stats have happened under his watch, yet he gets a pass — He cites United's poor recent club stats and Bruno's role as captain
- Carrick should be given time, just as Arteta was; the team have not been backed, playing without a striker lets opponents push up, Casemiro has not been replaced, and they should have sold Bruno in the summer to rebuild — He blames the lack of backing, unbalanced squad and injuries rather than putting it all on Carrick
- After last night's heavy defeat, he would now take Eddie Howe — He still wants Carrick to do well, but the performance changed his mind
- Eddie Howe would not fix things either; everything is wrong at the club and the root problem is the ownership, the Glazers, so unless the owners change it will just be another cycle of managers and players downing tools — He believes Howe's managerial qualities would be ruined at United because nothing works until the ownership issue is solved
- The Glazers are not going anywhere, so United have to start on the pitch; Howe has already improved players, won a trophy and reached the Champions League at Newcastle despite limited resources, so he deserves time — He points to the progress of Lewis Hall, Joelinton and others to counter the idea that changing manager would be pointless
Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent react to Manchester United's Champions League loss to Como last night and questions if Michael Carrick is still the man for the job. It's gone from bad to absolute terrible as Darren Bent would say. United will reportedly consider former German and Bayern boss Julian Nglesman. They sack Carrick Conte Eddie how also linked. Talks by understands that Carrick will be in charge at least long enough to face Bournemouth this weekend. Let's hear from Michael Carrick now after the heavy defeat last night. >> I have to apologize to the supporters. I went over to the end and um I care about this football club as as as um as much as anyone if not more. you know, the position that I'm in and what what what I value this football club and um for us to play in that way is is it's not acceptable. Um it wasn't a good performance at all. We we built on we wanted to build on what we brought to leads in the performance that we had at Leads. Um and that that bit of intensity, that spirit, that aggression, that real willingness to to um to give everything. Um, tonight was the the the totally opposite of a performance, I have to say. >> I know it's a difficult question to answer, but how would you sum up Oh, sorry. No, that was in the question. My bad. >> How would you sum up Michael Carrick's time at Man United? >> Uh, thanks. Thanks, Tom. Well, listen. It's gone from bad to absolute worse for Manchester United. So, let's get an update. >> You don't need to play all just clip it. So, the joke works. Jeez. Look at that. Got that thing to find earlier. >> Oh, yeah. Convenient. That is it. Honestly, >> Jack, just clip it. So, we've just >> No, clip the part of him saying Como rubbish. We We'll come back say rubbish. We'll come back to that later. >> We're even worse. >> But no. Um >> I'll start with the obvious question. Does he have to go? >> Listen, he doesn't necessarily have to go because you if he if if the hierarchy Manchester United feel he is the right man, there's going to be these type of problems. I've seen it first time with Arta where we were worse than this. We finished eighth. You know what I mean? But I've seen it >> twice. >> Twice. So, if they feel he's a right man, then you have to back him. But by backing him, you have to bring in the players that he wants in January to turn it around if they feel he's not the right man. And they do decide to relieve him from his duties. For me, it can only be Eddie How. He's the only one man because And do you know what? If Eddie How wasn't called Eddie How and he was called I don't know, Eduardo um Sanchez, right? >> Okay. You stuck with Eduardo, but you couldn't put how in Spanish. >> No, Sanchez. >> Okay. >> You get the job because it's Eddie how people go. For me, he's the perfect guy for the job because first and foremost, he's good at going into places where it's a little bit of turmoil. He's a very good coach. He turns players that are a good level to reach their potential and he ends up selling for like record fees. He's m he can co when they even take their best players, his recruitment's really good. Like he again, I always go back to the Newcastle scenario. He identified when a was in a go, he identified J Pedro and Ekatika as two to come in. He didn't get them at Manchester United. like to think although at the minute your recruitment is terrible >> dog >> right he's good at identifying talent and also as well he he'll see what Manchester United need there's no compensation package there he's out of work he took Newcastle as far as Newcastle can go won them a trophy >> Champions League >> Champions League I don't see how you give it to anyone else I get it if you if you want a short-term fix I get it but if you're thinking right we need >> but that's not a guarantee >> it's not a guarantee especially in Europe with his record >> yeah awful in Europe >> but if you're talking about building and moving forward and someone having a project and putting things into place and you're going to give a bit of stability to the football club, it can only be anyhow. >> Ju just quickly, I know people going, "What about Bruno? We're doing Bruno at five, right? Too much Man United stuff to do." It was shocking. We'll talk about that five. Um, >> whenever you've suggested Eddie How, I've never been convinced, right? I couldn't be more convinced right now. >> That's the thing. If it was called Eduardo Sanchez, you would think, "Yeah, I like the >> Maybe. Maybe if he was called Eduardo Sanchez." Yeah. Yeah, that his recruitment and the team the way that he played. >> It's not only that. It's not only that. We're not as big as we think we are. We're only big by revenue. >> Yeah. And and the name. And so we need a manager to come in and take over a midtable team and do well with the awful resources and awful team that we have. And we have an awful team by the way. >> Exactly. And one thing about him is a good coach. >> He's a great coach. That's what we need. >> And you sometimes you need like un great coach cuz sometimes you're kind of forced with the hand that you're dealt right. So he's got players. He can't do anything till January. But we saw instantaneous at Villa when um when Una came in and Gerard and Eddie how at Newcastle I mean Joe Linton at one point was like again no disrespect was almost a laughing stop. >> Yeah. He turn he turned me into Y. >> He turned that three midfield into like juggernauts. >> Yeah. >> Look at like Dan Burn Eddie Hal would have probably never thought he'd get anywhere near the England squad. Look what he done. So I I think for me for Manchester United I hate sitting there and going get rid of Carrick. If he's a long-term plan, I've got no issue with that cuz I like Michael's a good guy. But if they believe he's not the right man or >> or if he's lost that address, you sort of feel with the way Martinez and >> Bruno and Tielemans and these mans all coming out yapping their gums off. >> Yeah. >> Then I think that >> it can only beat Ed. >> Yeah. Yeah, I agree. Do you think any Man United fans will be going, "No, we've got to carry more time. Can't keep sack managers." But do you think do you think there will be Man United say that you do? >> Yeah. Because again, it's a short space of time, but I'm looking at the situation and you fight. I've never known a situation where you get so many players coming out in a short space of time just just talking Bruno's your captain talk about tactics. Well, if he kept the ball then maybe they'd be a bit bit better. >> You know what I mean? So, I know we talk about Bruno at five but honestly some of the unwanted stats around Manchester United in recent times have been all done under his watch. >> Carrick, >> no. Under Bruno's watch. Okay. And yet people give him a pass for that. So many like worst starts uh lowest league position. >> Oh, I see you mean club stats. >> Club stats is under his watch. Yeah. Okay. Uh, listen, we're doing Bruno at 5. We're building up to another busy night of European football at six. And we got a great question about would you rather watch your team in the rain or watch a James? But the only reason I would take Conte to see the players being sick after training after got them doing the runs that he did at Spurs. >> He's not the answer for me. Con shortterm. Yeah. No, >> I I do like I really do like Eddie H. Now he's top. He's top of my list. >> He's out of what? He's there. >> Yeah, I agree with you. I mean, he could be Bournemouth this weekend. I know that's I know that's not going to happen a press um >> Michael Car did a press conference tomorrow. >> He's there outward. No conversation. >> Let's concentrate on the manager's position. Stuart is a Man United fan. Stupot >> Stuart. >> Hello. Hi. Sorry. Hi Darren. Andy, you're okay. >> Good. Does no one ever call you Stupot? >> Um my mother used to but it's been a while. >> Okay. Well, I >> You can call me You can call me whatever you want. I've been called worse. It's fine. >> Stupid reminds me of Cracker Jackack. Cracker Jack. That's why I said it. You're probably too young to remember that. >> Wow. >> Yeah, just only a little bit. Not far off, but a little. But great show, guys. You always made me laugh on the way home. So, uh, thank you for your service. >> Oh, that's nice. Kind words. Thanks, J. What do you want to say, my friend? >> Um, so there's a couple of quick points. Um, if if you don't mind, I'd like to see K give time the same as obviously Arteta was given. >> Yeah. Um but clearly he's not as we all know he's not getting the back in. Um I did say to a couple of friends in the summer when I was laughed at I said we're going to miss Casemiro uh massively and I need to identify a replacement for Casemiro and that seems to be proving point because people are just walking through us. Um, and I also said that I thought we should cash in on Bruno after the brilliant season he's had because I thought and and sort of build another team. And obviously, as we all know, Michael's not been backed, which is unfortunate. And I don't think in the position he's in now, his experience to cope with the lack of, you know, we've been playing without a striker all season. And I think teams automatically will go 10 yards further up because they're not facing a striker. They've got a 10 with their back to them instead of a striker who's going to push them. So I think you know that's not certainly not helped but everything's wrong. I don't think there's anything in the club at the moment that's right. Obviously Luke Shaw's got injured again. >> Can I ask would you take would you take Eddie how right now? I think for the experience of what he's got, I mean, like I said, I want to see Michael do well, but I think the the hierarchy is not going anywhere. >> Stuart, what's the answer to the question? Would you take Eddie How right now? >> After last night, I'm going to have to say yes. >> Okay, thanks. Cool. Let's go to Matt. He's a Man United fan. Matthew, >> hello. >> How are you all right? >> I'm not too bad. Yourself? >> I'm good. Okay, >> I'm good. We're both well. Thank you for asking. Very kind of you. What would you like to say? >> Good. >> Well, last night it was a load of doughs, wasn't it? >> The way Matt started with that dross, was it? >> Well, they finish. Sorry about that. Gloating Arsenal fan. It's horrible. Go on. >> Um, you've as you mentioned Eddie Hal, last caller. Eddie Hal. Uh, you can bring him in, but you nothing's going to fix it. You know, the club is absolute an absolute disgrace at the moment. It really is. Everything's wrong within the club. Uh, and I think the only thing you've got to change, the first thing you got to change is a gra is the ownership and everyone can blame and sounds like an excuse. >> But, but Matt, I understand your point, but that that's not going to happen because they're not going anywhere. So, you have to start on the pitch and I think Eddie how you look at I know listen I get it the size of clubs are completely different. But look at Newcastle before he he he got the job and look at Newcastle once he got it how he transformed the players they already had there. He won them a cup, a couple champions league campaigns, and that's all with PSR, by the way. He couldn't do anything with that. He was losing his best players. I think you take it to Manchester United. You give him a bit of time. >> Decent. >> Well, you look at Lewis Hall, he improved Lewis Hall, Joe Linton, he made him a willbeater. Mc Gomez, he brought him into the club. So, he he developed the players. He improved them. Get that. But he will get ruins coming to United. He will that's that his his his managerial qualities will just get ruin be coming to United because >> do you say no one can fix that? >> No. Unless the greatest go it's you're going to have the same cycle. A manager comes in has a great start. We sign him up. The players drop down tools. He set the manager. We bring another manager in. The players have a great start. They down tools. It's just a repeated cycle. The glazes are absolute poison to the club. And the only way to it is the Premier League say you're always in you're just in colossal debts. You we've got to force you to sell like they did with >> I'd love that. Thanks for love that. >> Get anywhere. So you're going you're going to have to you can't change the glazes. So So you have to do the next best thing. And again I'm an advocate. I'm not sitting there going get rid of Carrick because if he's the right man give him time but if he's not what you waiting for ads up next to me not fan you ads. >> I'm good guys. How are you? >> Yeah we're go we're okay my friend. Have you got the answer to the problem? >> I'll be honest with you, I'm I'm quite fortunate because I've actually grown up and I've seen United win everything. And I remember a couple of years ago when City won the treble, I think I called in and I remember and I said I had a bit of a banter with Kundai and I said and he was saying to me like I can't believe you're calling in and I just congratulated him and I said listen I'm not really fussed because I've seen my team win everything but I've got to a stage now cuz I remember when they used to lose back in the day I used to get so wound up I used to start smashing things and now it's just like they lose and it's like all right okay >> water off a duck's back. Yeah. >> Yeah. Exactly. It's not it it doesn't it doesn't bother me which is um >> yeah that that I think that's always the worst thing when when it it refuses to bother you then I think that's when you know you're at the end of your your >> tether it doesn't matter. So, what's the odds on Eduardo Sanchez being the next Man United manager instead of Eddie how Eduardo Sanchez? >> Who is he a person? >> No, it's a man name I made up. You'll find him. >> Don't surprise me.
