"PATHETIC IDEA!" talkSPORT in HEATED DEBATE over if Gareth Southgate DESERVES a Premier League job!
Does Southgate deserve a Premier League job? talkSPORT in heated debate
The video debates whether Gareth Southgate deserves or would want a Premier League job. Southgate himself says he does not see a return to the Premier League, while talkSPORT hosts argue over whether he is turning the league down or the league is turning him down, citing his England record, old Premier League failure and the quality of recent top-flight appointments. There is no settled conclusion.
- I do not see a scenario where I return to the Premier League — He says he stopped enjoying wins by the end of his England spell, has hardly watched football or been to a ground since, loves his life over the last 18 months, and is not interested in taking a job just for money or survival.
- Southgate is turning the Premier League down, not the other way around — He says the question is pointless because Southgate has never put himself out there for jobs and has already explained why he does not want to return.
- If Southgate really wanted a Premier League job, clubs would want him; the idea that nobody would is pathetic — He points to recent Premier League appointments of unproven or failed managers such as Igor Tudor lasting seven games at Tottenham, Graham Potter at West Ham and Nathan Jones at Southampton, while Southgate has built cultures and dressing rooms and held one of world football's biggest jobs.
- Southgate is not usually a serious contender when Premier League jobs come up — He says his name has not come up on shortlists when vacancies arise, except at Manchester United, and that was more about his relationship with Jim Ratcliffe and senior figures than football judgment.
- England were a hard watch even when winning late in Southgate's reign, especially at the European Championships — He says he went to games to gauge fan feeling and many England fans found that tournament frustrating; he agrees with Southgate that the wins stopped being enjoyable.
- Southgate does not deserve a Premier League job; even if Fulham wanted a new manager and he wanted it, they would not choose him — He says Southgate's Premier League track record is 15 years old and ended in failure, international management is different from Premier League management, and Southgate may not feel suited to club football.
- Southgate made millions from a job he was not qualified for, and no major club has shown interest — The message says he is now enjoying a comfortable life; the host calls it harsh but probably true.
- Southgate laid the foundations for England's growth and should not be hammered by Manchester United fans — The message says he has been attacked by deluded Manchester United supporters, which has affected his love for the game.
- Southgate's final year as England manager was painful, and England could have gone out at the European Championships — He says England were poor and would have deserved to lose that game if not for a moment of brilliance from Bellingham.

Let's hear from Sir Gareth Southgate. He says, "I don't see a scenario where he will return to the Premier League." He's been speaking to the Aml Rajan podcast. >> I mean, I have to say I don't see a I don't see a scenario where I do that. >> Why? Um well firstly towards the end of my time with England I stopped enjoying you know the the at the very least for a period you know the winds keep you going by the end I didn't even enjoy the wind for any longer than a couple of minutes. So you know I've hardly watched football. I've been to I went to the Champions League final the year after I left England 2025. I went to the FA Cup final to see my team Palace win their first trophy. I've not been to a football ground since. Um so my sort of desire to be involved in football has changed. Um you know I've loved the last 18 months of my life. I've had 37 years where my sense of self depended on did I win? Did I win or lose on Saturday. I'm not interested in survival. You know, just being a manager because it's a good salary and survival that doesn't excite me. The one of the beauties with England was we we could win. We could create history. We could break new ground. But I've given a lot of my life to football. I've given every ounce I had. And I just fancy a different period of my life. Um the ref who is our esteemed producer has returned today. Um welcome back refce once a week. Not a week just on a Friday. A lot of work. >> It's a lot of work. Too many too many games. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's not enough squad depth in talk sport dressing room. >> He's moaning about a lack of cover. >> He is um he said uh he wanted me to ask this question. Is Sir Gareth turning down the Premier League or is the Premier League turning down Sir Gareth? I mean with respect um you know and he's very good. We like the ref but it is a pointless question isn't it? Uh because there is only one acceptable answer and it's not even possible to contrive a debate out of it. >> Of course he's turning the Premier League down >> really. >> Yeah. >> How many lists do you think he's been on? >> Quite a few. Do you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Like who? >> If he says he's available. If he said he was available it would be it would be up there for a job. >> Like who? Well, let's have a look at over the last 5 years and think very carefully about who has got Premier League jobs. Igor Tudor has got a Premier League job at Tottenham. He lasted seven games and was sacked in April. An Postgog had led Spurs to Europa League success and finished 17th, got the Nottingham Forest uh gig, lasted 39 days, the shortest ever permanent reign in history. Liam Renior got plucked from Strasburg to look after Chelsea. quite frankly a baffling appointment. Vito Pereira with Wolves got sacked after three months. Um eight defeats in 10 then got the forest job. Graham Potter managed to get the job at West Ham United. Nathan Jones got the the manager job at Southampton. With all due respect, didn't really have the qualifications. >> G was England manager at that point was >> Alvaro Arbaloa is in charge of Fulham after a fivemon stint at Real Madrid. Come on, get real. This is a bloke who's got a history of building a culture, a dressing room, and has had held one of the most prestigious jobs in world football. There's no way that everybody in the Premier League is turning around and said, "Oh, we don't want Gareth." It's a pathetic idea. I >> if he has turned down jobs, then he he's kept it on the low. >> Well, he's never put himself out there to have a job. And he's basically just told you why. >> Yeah. because he's never to my knowledge you know when vacancies have become available and you sort of get a steer as to what the short list of potential replacements would be his name hasn't come up it did at Manchester United for a time because of his relationship with Braillesford is obviously not part of the the football side anymore and to Jim Ratcliffe so I think it is actually quite an interesting question that the one point I agree with what he said there he said he wasn't enjoying the wins at the end nor were we in that European Championships by [laughter] the way they were they were a hard watch even though they that's quite that's quite interesting Interesting that you say that because if I remember rightly, you made it your business to try and go and watch them. >> I did. >> Yeah, you did. >> To get a feel of what the fans were thinking and the reason >> a lot of the England fans >> I think you were enjoying yourself with you after the Switzerland penalty shootout. You look pretty happy. >> A lot of the England fans found it a frustrating watch that tournament. >> Well, yeah. Well, and what's your point? >> I'm just agreeing with him. The wins weren't great. Will they? You >> think he's got the personality to be a Premier League manager? Now, >> he of course he's got the personality to be a Premier League manager. Does he need does he need to go and do it? Does he want to do it? Don't b I just think it's I just think it's ludicrous. >> What about his track record in the >> You can't be ser You can't be seriously turning around to me and saying, "You don't think he'd get a job in the Premier League?" Well, I think if Fulham wanted a new manager and he really wanted it, they wouldn't go for him. Nonsense. >> What about his track record? Because there is a difference. >> His track record, his track record was 15 years ago, >> but he failed when he was last a Premier League manager. >> Okay. And no one has ever failed in Premier League. No, I was just going to say there's a difference. >> Just giving you a list of people that found the previous clubs and got jobs straight away. >> There's a difference between international management and Premier League management. Maybe maybe he doesn't feel that he's suited to Premier League management. >> Maybe he doesn't. But that's what I'm saying. He's turning it down, not the other way around. >> Crooked. Stop. I mean, he's probably got dinner with Sir Gareth later or maybe Sunday dinner. That's his mate protecting him. Let's not annoy Sam Gates. Great. >> You two headline grabbers. Me think about it. Actually, >> you defend your f your friends and I love it. >> You don't defend Crooie much. He's your best friend. >> I I always defend him. >> I have to sometimes sometimes I have to take phone calls on his behalf and defend him. I defend him. >> I can't believe >> Did I defend you the other week? Did I defend you the other week? Did I try and come to your aid the other week and you still blew it up on socials? Did I try to come to your aid? Yes, I did. >> I can't believe knowing that that Sam was in the chair. [laughter] Sir Gareth didn't want to speak to us at that recent charity event. >> Oh, really? Listen, >> he ruled himself out of Premier League jobs and he ruled himself out speaking to us. [laughter] >> Nothing wrong with that. He doesn't need it. This is talks for 03717234. Gareth Southgate translation. I've made multi-millions pounds out of a job I wasn't qualified to do in the first place. No major club has shown any interest and now just going to enjoy my comfortable life. Nothing wrong with that, but probably true. Is that harsh? Says Gary and Chukesby. It is Gary. Um, this is why we love Sam. Backs everything up with evidence. Facts can change opinions, but opinions can't change facts. I don't know who put that who sent that in. It's anonymous, but we love it. >> Sir Gareth, sir, >> appearing appearing at a university or an after dinner near you >> very [laughter] and unlike and unlike you when you were asked to put on a quiz for a football club, he sold tickets. This is talk sport Chelsea tomorrow is live on talk sport game day live with Adrien Durham, Alan Pardu and Scott Mter with the fastest goal service around from 2:30. We've also got Swansea versus West Ham tomorrow in the Championship on Talk Sport 2. That'll be cracking Ian Dant and Perry Groves bringing you that. And on Sunday, Game Day Live takes you around the grounds once again. We've got Brighton Palace, Bournemouth, Suddenland leads Manchester United and of course the big one, Nottingham Forest against Arsenal, which Crookie can't wait for. Desperate to go uh to that game instead of leads Man United. Sam Croo and Gabby, you're all missing the point. Southgate doesn't want to be back in management. He's enjoying life as it is. Powers says, "Gareth laid the foundations for the national team to grow. He gets hammered by deluded Manchester United fans like Crookie. No wonder his love for the game has been affected." Um, you're fighting a losing battle here FA Sam. [laughter] The last year of Aris Southgate time as England manager was painful. We deserve to lose against Slovenia in the Euros if not for a moment of brilliance by Bellingham. I think was that Slovakia or Slovenia? I can't remember. They played him back to back. Um him a Premier League club not for Hey, what up?
