City THRASH Liverpool & Man Utd Stumble Again | Premier League All Access
Manchester City thrash Liverpool and Manchester United stumble again: the weekend verdicts
The show reviews the Premier League weekend, with Manchester City’s win over Liverpool and the title-race argument dominating. Manchester United’s late collapse at Tottenham, Liverpool’s squad balance, Nottingham Forest’s defeat and the form of Arsenal and Chelsea also come under scrutiny. The overall verdict is that City are the form team and United are in deep trouble, though Troy Deeney still makes Arsenal his title favourites.
- Manchester City were excellent and handled the big occasion better than Liverpool. — They managed the opening stages well, went over to their fans before kick-off, and the Gravenberch red card plus Doku coming off the bench changed the game.
- Even at 11 v 11, City would have won, probably comfortably. — The momentum charts were with City apart from the first 15 minutes and the first 10 of the second half; Doku could change it, Haaland always gets a chance, and Liverpool kept losing players.
- Liverpool’s squad balance and recruitment are wrong; money has gone into areas where they are not getting value, leaving no defensive midfielder or full-back cover. — Several £100m-plus signings have not delivered, there is no out-and-out holding midfielder and no alternative full-back, so a young forward had to lead the line.
- On current form Manchester City are title favourites, and the Premier League will be desperate to avoid an unresolved case dragging to May. — City have won six from six, Arsenal were not at their flowing best against Leeds, and City have too many attacking weapons.
- Arsenal, not Manchester City, are still the title favourites. — He agrees City are in great form but sticks to his view without expanding on it.
- Nottingham Forest threw the game away, and Crystal Palace were poor even though they won. — Forest dominated the first half but did not kill the game and then offered nothing; Palace left too many gaps and will struggle this season unless they sort it out quickly.
- Manchester United were atrocious in the first half and Carrick picked the wrong team; Tielemans cannot start alongside Mainoo because the midfield has no legs. — Tielemans starting every game does not make sense, he was an opportunistic £35m signing, and the substitute who came on looked fully fit.
- Manchester United’s problem is a mentality running through the team; the players are not angry enough about dropping points, and Carrick has not changed it. — They kept dropping deeper after taking the lead and gaining a man advantage, defended the equaliser poorly, and then shrugged it off, putting more pressure on the manager.
- Arsenal were poor against Leeds but got the win, and their squad is still good enough to win the title. — After Brighton hurt them they tried to go back to an old, safe Arsenal style; Leeds copied the pressing blueprint, but Arsenal still got the result and their squad is too good.
- Chelsea are not at Arsenal or Manchester City’s level, but they are the best of the rest because their forwards and functioning midfield make them good to watch. — Their attacking players are excellent, they found a midfield formula that worked against Bournemouth, and they are entertaining, though the defence still worries.

I want to say Man City were excellent. >> Do we think they'd have run out winners, let alone such comfortable winners if it was 11 against 11? >> I feel like he's got to a place now where he's trying so hard, so hard to make it work. >> Walking into a ground where everyone has decided that you are the villain. These players are not the villains, by the way. >> Mhm. They've got the cheat code. They've got a player in Ryan Shery who in every moment of every tough situation says, "Give me the ball, lads. Don't worry about it." The first half was atrocious, but then I look at the equalizing goal. What are you doing with Sandro Martinez? Hello and welcome to Premier League Access with me, Sam Massace, talk sports chief football correspondent, Alex Krook, and the former Watford captain, Troy Deany, to look back on all of the weekend's action in the Premier League. Now, in August, I did tell you that Manchester United would do much, much better than most people think. They've just made their worst start to a league season in 40 years. So, apologies to most people. But it's not about me, is it, Troy? It's not about me. No, it's not about me. It's not about me. It's more important to get short, sharp reaction from Alex Crook. >> You all right, mate? >> I'm good. We don't need to focus on that game, do we? 13th against 18th. It's not relevant this weekend. So, move on. But is that a worse start than Amar in the guy that Alex Grates? >> Moving on. Um [laughter] Troy Deini told us on Thursday that Oliver Glasnner deserved a tofo at Cell Hurst Park. Well, he got a warm reception and then at 4 p.m. got told, "You're getting sacked in the morning." Fair enough though, right? >> Yeah. Always always got in love with war. >> Absolutely. Uh uh Alex Cook told you that Alex Scott could be out for up to two months. He was and didn't Bournemouth pay for it. Manchester City fans enjoy it. Six wins from six. Three points clear. Three sensational goals at Anne Field. Um we hate to rain on your bananas, but once the appeal is heard, you won't be top of the table. Uh the biggest fixture before Christmas, I'm afraid, is in the conference room. Um also coming up today, Landro Martinez takes up wrestling. A 36-year-old signed for Vibes scores two. And a manager who is bottom of the league would like you to know where he used to work. [laughter] All right. Where did he used to work? Do you know? Do you know? Do you? Do you know? Okay. Let's get on with it. [music] Troy, it's ironic, isn't it, that Manchester City benefited today from a punishment swiftly handed out to Liverpool whilst we're still waiting for Manchester City's punishment for unfathomable breaches of the rules. >> Yeah, it is ironic, but I want to say Man City were excellent. They handled the occasion. They played all of the the the street smarts in the first 15 minutes really well. the little details of going over and celebrating with their fans before the game, before balls even kicked really really enjoyed what Man City did and ultimately they handled the the moment bigger than Liverpool. Gra Burch lost them the game and Dou won Man City the game but in all I know you were there guys. How good is Ride Sher? >> Off the scale so good. the little step over. Uh then the reception for the back heel from Gardia was excellent and the finish was was cheeky jerky all over. Um let's start at the beginning though. Um you're right I think to mention Graenberg and Docker because Dou coming off the bench was probably the most significant moment because he gets with Graenberg sent off. He >> makes the first goal, scores the second goal, has a hand in the third actually as well. We were there before the game. Viferous atmosphere. City fans answering with inflatable bananas. Um, and it didn't shrink the dressing room, did it? It fired them up. There was a few moments though early on when there were a few wobbles. Croc. >> Yeah, I thought Mark Gay again looked a little bit rattled by it all and and maybe Nick O'Reilly to a lesser extent as well. But as the game wore on, I think getting to Halime at at nil nil, it was a non-event really the first half. All the drama was off the pitch as opposed to on it. But that was perfect for Enzo Moresca. It was quite subdued at Halime. obviously very different from when the the team first arrived for the warm-ups and and obviously at kickoff as well and then in the second half it kind of felt like Manchester City were were going through the gears having said that there was a after the first yellow card which they felt agrieved by the Gravenber tackle on Elliot Anderson they had a little flurry of chances didn't they Liverpool couple of saves from Donnaruma one that Mallister curled wide >> the red card was the turning point they were really good after that Manchester City but do we think they' run winners, let alone such comfortable winners if it was 11 against 11. >> Yeah, I do. And the reason I said that is because again, if you look at the momentum charts, it was 15 minutes at the start of the game and the first 10 minutes at the start of the second half that Liverpool did. The rest of it was was City. I felt the likes of Daku was going to, you know, impact the game when they came on. And bigger than that, they've got Harland. So, you always feel that they're going to have a chance. You always feel that he's going to score. And at the opposite end, again, we're not going to talk about it too much, but Liverpool just losing players at will for all this money spent, losing players, and you you can't you can't legislate for that. >> Well, if you looked at the two squads beforehand, you'd know that there was not much difference in terms of the amount of money that each squad was assembled for, but Liverpool's looked a lot lighter than Manchester City's. And Manchester City, you have to say, play really well. They played really well because they soaked up the pressure. They played really well when they got their chances. They took them. Apart from the one that Harlem missed, and he's always going to miss one chance every now and again, and and and that was a big miss, but then he he converted a harder one. I actually thought Liverpool weren't very good. >> I thought that they got to the edge of the penalty area >> and they didn't have a cutting edge. And I think a lot of people said in the press room afterwards and croo you were you were in there with me you know oh they haven't got isach they haven't got sosa they they haven't got kodi gakpo or echatik yeah but they did have barka >> and they did have Munoz and they did have Florian Vietz and they did have the two fullbacks that they'd signed in the summer as their starting fullbacks one of which they didn't start because they still don't trust by the way they have got a Champions League winner in Ronald Dooo and a multiple La Liga winner and they got Virgil van and die. So they should have enough in that team to be able to compete with Manchester City and compete they did for a little while but they never to me look like scoring. Did anyone else want to disagree with that? >> No, I thought Munoz did well. I thought he upstaged the other two that you've talked about there. You know the 100 million pound boys to me still just floats in and out of games. Didn't see anywhere near enough of of Barcel. So yeah, I take your point for that. Um I I thought as an attacking entity they got into some decent positions particularly in that first half in and around the penalty area but lacked the cutting edge and actually Manchester City found it quite easy to defend against them. So I think it's a problem because you look at Areola's start and yes he was unbeaten before today. What was it? Two wins, three draws, one defeat. Not really seen a convincing performance out of his Liverpool team yet, have we? >> No. But also on the other other side to it, they've got the the 135 million problem which is Floring Vert. Like I just did a piece here out in New York. There's a moment I don't know if you guys remember this. They break away, get to the edge of the box. It's Vert and he he shoots and puts it wide, but he's got Barcoda to his left. He's got Kirk screaming down the left hand side >> because he's he's got I feel like he's got to a place now where he's trying so hard vets so hard to make it work >> that you're looking at players and and he's losing them by the second he's losing players because that's a simple pass where you just fire that to Barcode and you say go on then son go and get out in one v one or allow Kirkus to get Rajger we get a better shot. You talk about Barca, they're not giving him the platform. At PSG, we saw how brilliant he was when you give him the platform, dominate the ball, get in one v one. He's very hardly one v one because it's so slow. It's so passive. All that money spent and that midfield is still light. We We're talking about three players injured now. They're great players, don't get me wrong. You can't lose three players and your whole squad is gone. The balance is wrong. >> We mentioned it in the pre-match, I think. not the pre-match, the pre-season podcast when we said the balance to this squad is not right. You know, the recruitment has not been right. They spent far too much money in areas where they're not getting value, by the way, in any of those areas. Not one of the players that they have spent over100 million pounds on has delivered what they expected yet. That is that is a fact that hasn't happened. And when you haven't got another right fullback, when you haven't got an alternative left back, when you haven't got someone who can play as a defensive midfield player, an out andout defensive midfield player, that seems like a a scandalous waste of resources really. Um, so they start with Lewis Kumas up front. Difficult for him. He's only a kid, 21 years of age, first Premier League start, leading the line. He huffed and puffed, but he didn't really look a threat, did he? And he he had one good chance he didn't take it. And I'm sure that he'll keep running that back in his mind, Troy. >> Yeah, but also it's not natural position as you alluded to. You can't expect somebody who's not a striker to all of a sudden go up against Man City and two of the best center backs in world football and say, "Go on then, deliver and perform for us." You mentioned the uh the right back there, Fong. Have they let him back in the stadium yet after he just went sliding past Churkey? But like you know when you when you look at it genuinely look at it he's going to a situation where you think how have they got it so wrong. Jurgen Klo left them an unbelievable team and since he's left the the building obviously I thought they went on to win the league but just from a player recruitment point of view they have got it so wrong with contracts with people coming through the door and it doesn't seem that that's going to stop anytime soon. So how how have they got it so wrong? Maybe Crookie you can tell me. Well, it's difficult to defend the recruitment. I would go back to to last summer and I don't think too many of us were picking holes in the recruitment, but obviously it very quickly unraveled. Didn't help that Alexander Isach spent most of the season injured, but I've always had a a sneaky suspicion that we know that the owners are quite frugal. Um, they like to to cut their cloth accordingly. The fact they went for so many big money signings at the detriment to the rest of the squad, surely that has to be a directive from the ownership. go and get us these superstars. We we want some players with X factor because otherwise it it just does not make any sense. They got backed into a corner when it came to Trent Alexander Arnold. Um the previous hierarchy in terms of sporting director and and Michael Edwards above him inherited a situation where he was never going to sign a new contract and they knew it'd be very difficult to find a like forlike replacement. So they they stumbled upon Fring Pong. Is he a right back? Is he a right wing back? Is he suited to the Premier League? I think the jury's out on all >> can he defend >> questions. Can he defend? Probably not, but you would level that at Trent as well. >> Ekit I think they signed thinking maybe they wouldn't be able to get Isach. And then obviously they've ended up with both, which again leaves a little bit of imbalance in the squad. Who is going to be the main man up front, >> but once you got you don't have to go and get Isach, do you? >> That's the point. >> True. >> That's the point. Yeah. I don't know. It seems to be even again we go back to Vert. You You can't play anybody out. There's no other number 10. I was looking through the squad, there's no other natural number 10 in there. >> It's wild. And you look at someone like Chelsea, Sam's team, they've got four. >> Got four people they can put in there. It's it. So there's >> probably loan you one if you want one. >> Yeah. But the thing is they could have spent the money though, couldn't they? There was other options available, but it seemed like they were dead set on these things. They've done them and now they go, "Well, we can't understand why it's not working." Do you also think that they've spent money on players that aren't really 100 million pound players? Hold that just for a second. Right. Isak obviously scored a lot of goals, but I think we all knew that that was a season where he'd scored more goals than ever before and he had a regular problem with injury. Right. >> I think that was always a good >> that that's the first thing. Bark >> push back on it. >> Good player. Really good player and still but still very very very young. still young, >> achieved a lot, got medals from everywhere, but was he PSG's number one left winger? Was he their number one player? If he was, they wouldn't have let him go. And Vietz, another overund million pound player, played for Bay Leverkusen. No disrespect, but he wasn't playing for Bayern Munich. He hasn't won the Champions League. 100 million pounds. I mean, maybe that's just the market. Maybe that's just more than£100 million in in his case. >> Yeah. But then would would Liverpool fans not say Chelsea spend over 100 million on on Kaisedo from Brighton and 100 million on Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa? You know, when you're starting to talk about the teams that they've came from, that would be a push back. I I think >> you would push back on those, but you'd also say that both those two players, Rogers and Kaisedo, may not have delivered 100 million pounds worth of of performances, but they were they were proven players. And actually they haven't let Chelsea down since they've been there. >> No, Kai's had his injuries though, hasn't he? Is the point. He's he's only just came back from injury. I think Rogers have been fantastic. But I I just think just trying to give a counterbalance. I can't disagree with what you're saying, >> but I do think the um the big piece to to it all and the frustration for me is that Barcelona's got talent. You can see that that like Stevie Wonder can see it. Do you know what I mean? But they don't give him the platform. They don't go right, he's quick. Give him the ball early. They don't do it. They go it's gone really slow. So it's it's as if they're building for a quick attacking um very athletic front four and god let's just go really slow like it's not the pieces don't add up. I think Isak is nailed on 100 million cuz when he's fit he scores he's proven that already this season. What's he got? Four in five already. >> So the the guy scores goals and and in a marketplace where there is none. There is no strikers. You have to pay that. Unfortunately the others we could have a we could have a debate about whether they're 100 or not. You paid 100 million for potential now, aren't you? With Barcola, so it's difficult. >> Where's Andoni Iola sitting right now, Crook? >> In a pub. [laughter] >> It's not a crisis, is it? >> They haven't won at home and there's only three seasons since the first world war in which they haven't won any of their first three home league games. >> Yeah, that is a damning statistic, but it is only one defeat. Um, and the unbeaten record was in in place until today. I think you'll be a little bit alarmed with how easy City found it against 10 men because not all teams do. Um, and they did fold like a pack of cards after the red card, >> but it it's going to take time. It took time at Bournemouth for him to get his ideas across. And the the squad is not >> I know it isn't and you don't get the leeway, but the squad is not necessarily molded to to what he wants to Alexander Isac is a good player, >> but he doesn't lead the press in the way that Evan Nilson did for him at Bournemouth, for example. So I think he's >> but you know that crooked I get so >> he's probably still finding out about his players. >> Yeah, I saw too. But he know he knew that Eddie how had that problem. We we worked how many games seen that with Eddie House screaming at he's pressed and he looks over at the bench like mate I score goals that's what I do like and you know I I get it like by the way that's ego and that's why he's so good and all of those things but >> as a manager you have like I would challenge push back on that and say what's the good game he's had since he's been in what's the game where you go that's the Iola system that's what we're going to see preseason was fantastic I watched all the preseason games >> they haven't done that in any of the league No, >> they did okay for half an hour, didn't they? Ipsswitch. Uh, but it's Ipsswitch. It [laughter] was half an hour. >> You can't hang your hat on an away trip to Port. >> What was the Champions League game? Their first Champions League game. They won that one, didn't they? >> Um, did they beat Atletico? >> Yeah, Atéico, who are terrible by the way, who are a rebuild, but anyway, fine. >> They're second in La Liga, aren't they? >> Well, the good news is that Manchester United play Atéico. >> I hope they are terrible, Troy, by [laughter] the way. I really hope they're terrible, >> mate. old school 442, but their best player has sacked it off cuz he wanted to move to Barcelona. So, you know, Yeah. >> Um, let's talk a little bit about uh Manchester City, and I just wonder whether or not you sort of can see why they performed the way they did today, Troy, because walking into a ground where everyone has decided that you are the villain. These players are not the villains, by the way. They there's nothing to do with them. But I think the English football fan and maybe quite rightly has now taken it upon themselves to make sure that it is their job that everybody knows that they're dissatisfied with this situation. So they're going to quite happily boo, hiss, cry, cheat every time a Manchester City player touches the ball. But I wonder whether or not >> that it's helped Manchester City. It shows they've got a great mentality. I mean, I looked at Anderson and Harland and I thought, "God, they're they're reveling in this." >> I also I looked at two other players to to that list. Enzo Fernandez, >> who had no problem. I think that I think that made him tap back into that Argentina mentality, us against the world. >> But they've got the cheat code. They've got a player in Ryan Shery who in every moment of every tough situation says, "Give me the ball, lads. Don't worry about it." and he's he's whether you hate Man City for what's going on, you don't like where they're at, you appreciate that level of football. You appreciate that genius. And you you can't help but watch it and go, "Oh, he's so good. Oh, he's so good." And and you know what he's also done as well, and this is going to be a little bit of a shot, and I don't mean it to, but it it's just glaringly obvious. We overhype people like Phil Foden so quickly. When you've got players like this who can come in whether it be
