Alex Crook questions whether Manchester United's hierarchy can be trusted to replace Michael Carrick

The video is mainly about the fallout from United's 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid, with Martinez publicly criticising the hierarchy and questions over Carrick's position. Callers, hosts and Alex Crook discuss whether Carrick was backed enough, the squad and recruitment problems, and whether the United hierarchy can be trusted to choose the right replacement if Carrick goes. The overall conclusion is that the manager is not the only problem, and the squad and board decisions deserve more blame.

Alex Crook, Ally McCoist, Alan Brazil and Manchester United fans react to Lisandro Martínez's bombshell interview after their Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. Delighted to say our phone lines have been full all morning with you, the listeners, wanting to have your say on this. So, let's head there now. Let's start. A United fan, Liam. Morning, Liam. >> Morning, Liam. >> Good morning, guys. Thanks for having me on. Thanks for joining us, mate. >> Welcome. >> Ah, well, I mean, what a result again last night. [laughter] Just terrible. >> 18 seconds, eh, >> mate. I mean, I couldn't find it on on Matelli. I didn't manage to watch it, but when I went on to the scores to look for one nil down has been planned for a minute. >> My lord. >> Yeah. >> But I just want to make a point about Martinez, which is what he said yesterday. I don't blame him. He's had enough. He's come out and said there's no backing above and this is what you're going to get. But I mean, I called up last year after the four all game against Bournemouth when I spoke to Jim White and Simon Jordan. >> Yeah. >> And they was all excited ringing up going, "Oh, we scored four goals. I think I calmed down. We've let in four goals against Bournemouth. I said if you don't change that back line, it will cost a manager's job. Two weeks later, Ruben Arum got sacked. It wasn't because of that particular game. [clears throat] He had many other issues going with his tactics. We all know about that. What my point I'm trying to make is Michael Carrick has done nothing more. You could put Pep Guardiola Ferguson in there tomorrow. Wouldn't come for a start. With those defenders, they are going to sack any manager that turns up on that club. I'm sorry to say, but they are a disgrace. They get the odd performance out of them like Martinez who played well at times. You cannot put Martinez as a center half. He's about 4 foot one from grassroot from grassroots football right the way up to the Premier League. It doesn't work. The the goal last week he let in when it come over his head from against Spurs. He's turned around. He's like, you know what's going on. This is going to happen. I'm sorry. And I feel sorry for Carrick. He has done just a quick one. So he's come in Carrick. He has done nothing. He can't do anymore. He has managed to do something which was great. He got the manager bounce last season. He got all of these defenders. He shut me up miraculously. I thought my god, they're actually playing for the club at times. But what happened was we had Bruno Fernandez last year who arguably had the best season of his life. His assists, the goals he scored. So when we were getting one or two nil up, these defenders didn't have to worry too much. They'd have to do their job slightly. And it got them out of trouble. Now that Fernandez and these midfielders are slightly dropping their form, they need to turn around during the game now and say, "Right, my form's dropping. Can you get me out of trouble? Can I rely on you?" Here's their answer. This is your answer. This is who they are. Unfortunately, they've been there for far far too long. They need to go yesterday. It's as simple as that. I'm >> Okay, Liam. Thank you. I want to take a Thank you, Liam. >> Stell Ste United brand. Morning St. >> Morning J. How we doing? >> Good. Thank you. Thank Good, good, >> good, good, good. Um, just a quick one. Uh, 15 almost 15 years ago to the day or 16 years ago to the day, Wayne Rooney actually released a statement saying that um, he spoke to David Gil and he wanted to leave the club because he didn't receive any assurances about the future of the squad. Um, quite poetic. No, >> no, I take your point and I mentioned it to Baralia still early on. I think we had a we pop himself in 2010. The only thing he would say is he's probably in a position to see the reaction that he had. So maybe he's looking at it from a point of view saying, "I did it and it was the wrong thing to do." But you're right, he did do it and you made a good >> Could rip the dressing room apart still. He said, "Yeah, and it may well do by the way. It may well cuz not everyone in that dressing room will agree with what Martin has said." But you I just get the feel I just get the feeling that the he not only does he know what he's doing, I think most of the United boys would have known that he's going to have a pop. I don't think it' have been a surprise. >> And also I'm I'm summizing here all I'm summizing Wayne's probably had a chat with Michael about things as well. >> Yeah, >> cuz you know he's sticking up for his mate, isn't he? He probably knows a lot more than what we do. What's going on? There was no letter for under pressure manager Michael Carrick after United side were beaten 2-0 in Madrid by Atletico live on talk. However, the action continued in the tunnel after the game as defender Lzandro Martinez ripped into the club's hierarchy saying this. We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players in as well. I expect more 100% I expect more from our technical director. Michael Carrick spoke to Amazon shortly after Martin is his interview and said this. I haven't seen the interview. I've half heard about it and as the interviews that I've done, but um I think it's a little bit on the emotions of the game as well if um coming here and being disappointed not to to get something from the game and um straight after a game for me is now is is not the time to to to talk about you know that interview cuz I've not seen it. So, um I can't really comment on that. But I think it's uh it's important for us to um to move forward quickly really. I think it's there's a big game on Sunday and it's really important that we move we move forward and we stay focused on that. There's disappoint within the group. I'm I'm bitly disappointed um in certain things and and the boys are as well as a group of players. >> We need stable what price Martin is not to be in the squad against leads. >> He'll be in the squad. He has Oh, he's got to be has to be. >> I'm not so sure. >> Well, I think the first thing you got to say is Michael Carrick has got to pick the best team available to win that game, right? But is he not in dispute now having a go at the board and >> well maybe yeah >> I mean [clears throat] >> but no I take your point some of the board say will maybe tell Michael Carrick he's not playing >> exactly >> but if Michael car has got to pick his best team which he should be allowed to do. >> I know I agree I totally agree but having you know we've been talking about it all morning when you come out and say some of that I'm sorry I think you've you've sort of gone of a weekend off son. >> Yeah. Yeah. But I mean the board and people in those positions should not be above criticism. I mean you're taking always taking a risk when you're having a go at one of your bosses. I get that. I totally understand the concept of the whole thing. But I will defend his right to to say what he said although I don't necessarily think it was a good thing. >> So the big question does Martinez have the backing of these United teammates? Here's Talks chief football corres fan Alex Krook on that very subject. I don't think Martinez has gone rogue here. From what I'm told, his frustrations are shared by a lot of the senior players within that Manchester United dressing room. They also feel that Michael Carrick should have been better backed in the summer. Only three midfielders and a backup goalkeeper in Carl Darlow recruited at neglected areas of the team in need of replenishment. Only one senior left back, Luke Shaw, who of course was injured for that game in Madrid last night. only one out andout striker in Benjamin Cheshko who's had his injury problems going back to the end of last season as well and then you're pitching in two young defenders in Lenny Yuro and Aiden Heaven again I think they should have signed at least one senior central defender and Jason Wilcox will come under the microscope here he's the man who decided to fire Ruben Amarin after he spoke out against the board he's the man ultimately who decided to put his faith in Michael Carrick on a long-term contract, albeit with the backing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Inos. And a big question I'd asked this morning, if Michael Carrick is the full guy, and that inevitably is the way it goes at Old Trafford, do Manchester United fans really trust the likes of Jason Wilcox, Omar Bada, even Sir Jim Ratcliffe to hire the right man in his place? I would suggest the answer to that question is no. >> Alli, I didn't realize Jason Jason Wilcox had that sort of power. Oh, they do they do generally speaking. >> But this is the whole discussion whether [clears throat] >> you know it's normally the coach the manager that's the full guy right and in a lot of cases they're not picking the players. >> So surely the person that picks the players must shoulder is not as much if not more as >> you think Jason might be picking the team. >> No no I'm not saying that at all but it looks he's picking the players that Michael Car has to pick >> recruitment. Yeah. Okay. United winger Ahmad Dallow has gone to social media to call the loss a disgrace. So are we witnessing an unraveling in that dressing room? Is it about to explode? Delighted to say our phone lines have been full all morning with this. The listeners want to have your say on this. So let's head there now. Let me go first to Andy, a United fan. Andy, >> welcome Andy. >> Morning. Morning Jent. How you doing? >> Good. Well, thanks. >> Yeah. Yeah. It's good to talk to you. So yeah, I'm a local. I'm seen tick to hold at United and I've been supporting the club since you know I was eight years old and it's just disgusting to see the way that the club has fallen from grace. The dynasty that Alex has built is being taken apart brick by brick and I've been banging on this drum for years and years and all my mates are all the same thing. The club is toxic. the culture is wrong and the glazer ownership and the Inos and they've not done anything right and and it just proves the point of just how good Fergie was because he kept everything together and you just and you look at them lot across town I mean no Gallagher on drive the other day said we're run by business people and they're run by football people and we you know we we need change and you can't keep sacking a manager because it's a repeat pattern and what they expect him to achieve by, you know, replacing Carrick. I like him. He's United legend. He's a great player and I just think we've got to back him and and what else can we do? We need change and it's got to go. It's got to it someone needs to get a massive brush, brush it through the club and just start again because the only team or the only people that can bring Man United down is Man United. And you know, look at the, you know, the revenue, the commercial success. You know, we are one of the biggest clubs in Europe. >> Absolutely. And it's not it's not good enough at the moment. Andy, thank you. What about Chris? Chris United fan. Chris, good morning. >> Morning, Chris. >> Morning. >> I just think the Sandra Martinez's comments is justified to be fair. >> Right. >> Yeah. >> And I think get Carrick out contain >> Conte. Well, he's the man hovering ball account, so it be very interesting. But um should the players come out publicly and and state and state that you know um you know they've not exactly covered themselves in glory the players this season so far? >> No they haven't but the hierarchy is letting the club down big time. >> All right Chris nice >> appreciate it. >> Interesting. By the way Manchester United is still I think the coral are 94 to finish top four. So just just under two and a half to one. >> Would you be taking that >> at this moment? No. Because I think there's big tr I think there's big problems coming. Big trouble.
