talkSPORT Premier League Access: Man United held at Leeds, Crystal Palace thrashed by Brighton, Arsenal edge Forest and Man City win again amid a charges cloud
The show reviews the weekend’s Premier League talking points, including Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Leeds, Crystal Palace’s 5-0 defeat at Brighton, Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest and Manchester City’s seven straight wins. The conclusion is that United improved but Michael Carrick remains under pressure, Palace’s problems run deep and a managerial change looks likely, Brighton can contend, Arsenal’s one-goal wins are effective, and City’s defence and charges remain concerns.
- The 1-1 at Leeds is acceptable in isolation, but seven points from seven games leaves Michael Carrick under pressure and the season could drift into a black hole; the performance was better but the defending for the goal was terrible. — Seven points from seven; a pivotal week ahead, and they failed to deal with the first cross.
- Bruno Fernandes was lucky to stay on the pitch and should have been sent off for a second yellow. — He lost his head repeatedly and escaped a second booking.
- Manchester United’s players turn up when they want and toss it off when they want. — They did exactly that at Hull, so he was confident they would not lose at Leeds.
- The 1-1 at Leeds was a good result for Manchester United and there were positives to take. — They showed togetherness and fight and stopped the rot under maximum pressure; he expected them to lose.
- Crystal Palace’s problems are both recruitment and coaching, Pierre Sage could be gone soon, but Steve Parish and the recruitment side must share the blame. — Palace have been miles off all season, keep selling key players without replacing them, Chris Richards is left holding the defence and Strand Larsen is nowhere near Mateta’s level.
- Brighton can be Premier League title contenders, not just Champions League contenders. — The Conference League is not too taxing, the club is well run, Hürzeler is growing in confidence, young signings are developing, they no longer rely on Lewis Dunk and Tony Bloom’s analytics keep finding gems.
- Arsenal win one-nil and do it brilliantly; it is their trademark. — It is their 18th one-goal league win since the start of last season, the most in Europe’s big five leagues.
- Manchester City’s seven straight wins cannot get the credit they deserve while the Premier League charges hang over them, and that is bad for the league and its brand. — The outcome is unknown, rivals do not know how to approach the table because a points deduction is expected, and if City are clear at the top in January it becomes very uncomfortable.
- Manchester City are defensively crap and no one is talking about it because they keep winning; it could turn quickly. — They give away chances and their defenders are getting run all over.
- Referees are over-sanitising the game; Harrison Armstrong’s yellow for a good tackle was a disgrace, although Deeney said the late red was deserved for sheer stupidity. — Armstrong won the ball cleanly and no one complained, while the other player got involved in stoppage time and gave the referee a decision.

Bruno Fernandez was lucky to stay on the pitch. I've never seen someone lose their head so much and not get a second yellow for that. >> And that's why I was confident actually he wouldn't get beat today. It's a group of players who do turn up when they want and also toss it off um when they want as they did at Hull in particular. We have to talk about Crystal Palace cuz Crystal Palace were pathetic. Absolutely miles off it. And they have been all season. >> Strand Larson is nowhere near to the level of Mateta. Nowhere near. They've replaced they haven't replaced Alisa. They haven't replaced EZ. They haven't replaced Gayhei. This is the 18th league win by a single goal since the start of last season. The most if any team in Europe's big five leagues. This is what they do. Arsenal. It's 1 nil to the Arsenal and they do it brilliantly. Hello and welcome to Premier League access with me Sam Matase. Talk sports chief football correspondent Alex Krookers alongside me in Nottingham and we've got the former Watford captain Troy Deany with us as well. Hello, hello, hello one and all. Troy, you all right? >> I'm great. How are you guys doing? How was today? >> Oh yes, we're very good. We're very good actually. Michael Carrick is in a good mood. He escaped to Ellen Road with a point. Alex Crook refused to work for the duration of the entire game. We're actually at Forest Arsenal, Troy, and uh I was doing the round the ground show and as you know the round the ground show is quite labor intensive and at one point I said uh can you just come over and discuss Crystal Palace with us in this next section? And he turned around to me and went, I'm trying to watch the game. >> What did you think of the game, Crooked? What did you think, mate? >> Um I thought it was better than than recent performances. That's not much of a barometer. I was annoyed with the way that the goal for leads was conceded. I thought it was terrible defending, not dealing with the first cross, not sure what was doing, not looking at the ball, but it I'd have taken a point before the game. >> Interesting. >> I find it interesting because, you know, Sam, you like to do this thing and you said at the start of this uh season, we got to hold each other accountable. You remember that? You said you were whatever our takes are, you held yourself accountable for what you said. >> I do. >> Do you know who was going to have a uh a season of like resurgence that we're all going to go who their player of the season was? Do you remember who that was? >> I think I do, but I just checked my notes. Ah, yes. I don't think he played today. Did Did he play? No, >> didn't play at all. And they look better, he just said. So, I just wanted to hold people accountable. >> Yeah. >> So, what do you think, Crooked? >> I got that wrong. I think I gave Marcus Rashford too much credit that he'd be able to change his attitude and application. And I thought it was really telling actually that he didn't get off the bench today when maybe United were chasing a late winner. And I'm also told by Mickey Gray was at the game, he didn't come out and warm down with the rest of the subs either. >> Oo, interesting. Interesting. Um, okay. Um, look, I know you don't. >> Finally, Sam Sam, finally there's one one from you as well from Friday's show. I I I watched it. I listened. Sam told me at start this season he thought the way that Man United had done it was fantastic going for the front three next year go to the middle and then the year after getting the defending sorted. But we had a little listen and you wasn't too happy with the fact that they only went into the midfield. Every big club starts going through the back line. That's what you said this Friday. So would you like to apologize to our loyal listeners as well? No. Well, I think actually you've mischaracterized what I said. Um I I I did actually on this Friday show row back a little bit on what I'd said previously. However, what I said previously was I understood it the process of going forwards, midfield, back. I didn't say it was right, and I certainly didn't say it was fantastic, but I did say I understand it. >> Okay. I remember Alex Crook saying, "No, that's not how big teams do it." And you said, "Well, what do you want them to do, mate?" And then I watched Friday and you were telling me that. What do you want them to do, mate? >> Well, what do you want them to do? You want them to replace all 11 players in one summer? Is that how you how how it should be done by Jason Wilcox and uh to Jim? >> If you could if you could add one left back would be nice >> and a striker. But as much as it was an improved performance, it did highlight the issues, didn't it? when Martinez went off at Halime. Mazawi coming on and when 1-1, you just never sense they were going to score a goal because they didn't have a number nine. >> Okay. Well, we're supposed to get on to this in just a moment, but it's nice to have feedback from Troy. Uh we have got an Indian restaurant booked after the pod. So, can we get cracking? Um Troy, did did you stay awake in the latest episode of One Nil to the Arsenal? >> Oh, yeah. It was a tough game to watch, wasn't it? who was very um very boring, very very pedestrian. But I'm not going to give Arsenal slack or or put them down for winning games. That's what they do. They've shown you that they win games. They see games out. The bench that they've got is is very good. They can use it at any time. It's worrying worried state of affairs when they're the best team in in the UK at this moment in time. >> Manchester City go seven for seven. We will discuss the merits of that later in the episode. And I've got an interesting take which I want to get you to give me a bit more feedback on uh Detroit which I'm really looking forward to. Um shall we start with leads one Manchester United one? It was build as a must lose must not lose for Michael Carrick. >> Shall we start with leads one that Manchester United won? It was built as a must not lose for Michael Carrick and he did just that. So under the circumstances, do you reflect it as a good point? >> Yeah, in isolation going away to leads with the history of the fixture, the fact leads have started the season so well and obviously ran Arsenal close a week ago, I think a 1-1 draw is a decent result for Manchester United, but it is now seven points from seven games, it feels like this season could be drifting into a bit of a black hole really. So I think the bigger picture, he's still under pressure to deliver results. They've got Koma away in the Champions League in midweek which looks a toughy but again a game that United should be capable with the players they have of winning and then Bournemouth at home next weekend. Obviously Bournemouth just picked up their first win of the season. So it still feels like a pivotal week ahead for Michael Carrier but they were positives. The performance was better. The players look more invested. They were more willing to put tackles in. They looked to the naked eye like they ran a bit more. I mean, these are all pretty simple factors, but overall, it was a better performance, but the goal was really frustrating because the defending was atrocious. >> Why do I feel like that you're really not enjoying this discussion, and Troy really is? >> I feel like he's got plenty to say on the matter. >> No, do you know what I do? I have a lot to say. I also appreciate Croo's been through a tough roller coaster of the last seven, six, seven weeks. So, I'm letting him get his emotions out. appreciate his honesty as well to be honest with you. No, look, I'm I'm frustrated. I think I think if this was Amarin again, sorry to make it back to him, but he's seven unbeaten now for AC Milan, just so you're aware. He won again today. Um, he would be Carrick could come under a lot more pressure. I think Bruno Fernandez was lucky to stay on the pitch. I've never seen someone lose their head so much and not get a second yellow for that. Um, I I still don't know what Man Man United are and the lack of striker and striking options. Not only is it bad for Man United, but it's terrible for the youth team. You're telling me there's not one striker in the youth team that they can promote to just help out, even move his um move his journey on and his experience on. I thought leads were excellent, but showed that they're they're limited. They are very fast. They run around. They break you down. They don't have that little bit of quality to finish in the final third. And I think Man United lose to coma. I really do. I think they'll struggle. >> It's interesting. I think Boliv going in from the start makes a big difference for Manchester United. Tieleman's operating on the right hand side. A little bit odd, but it gives them a little bit more >> stability. They struggle to score goals despite creating a lot of chances. That's been a problem for the whole of the season. But I think the reason they've decided to change the formation and and have a little tactical tweak. By the way, we criticize a lot of managers and coaches when they don't have the ability to tactically change the team. He's done that and he has made them a little bit more uh solid. But you've been an advocate for uh through the middle throughout the course of the season so far. Should that be the default setting even when Benjamin is back? >> Yeah, probably. I mean I mean it depends on the opponent, but I was surprised having watched a lot United in preseason. You did their game in Leeds when Abumo played as the number nine and played really well. >> I also saw them lost to Amarim. >> You did, but he tore that up, didn't he? First game of the season at Hull. He played played Kuna as a false nine on that occasion. It was Bruno Fernandez today um by and large. But I think Abumo can do the role and do it pretty well. I mean, he should have buried the header that he missed, but obviously made amends with the second chance that came his way. But I mean, to get back to Troy's point, it looks a lot better balanced because Marcus Rashford is not there. Um, so yeah, I I would play a bumo through the middle all the time that Shesho is injured. Obviously, when he's fully fit that there might be a different decision to make, but that seems a little way off for the moment. >> Troy, what does it mean for Matias Kunga? Is he in forward purgatory? Because he's not a nine. He's not really a 10, is he? He's not a left winger. He fits a specific system that plays two inside forwards behind the main striker. When that formation changes, does he find himself surplus? He does a little bit, but this is again bigger picture stuff for Man United, right? So you you had wingers two years ago. You you bring in Ruben Amar and you get rid of all of your wingers to go to his system. Then you get rid of him and now you need wingers again. This is where I think Man United fans and especially Crookie are very very frustrated because it's very one way it's like let's have wingers, let's go the old school Man United way. Then the other way is actually no, we go to this 343 kind of formation and then we're going to go actually go back to wingers again. I I think for Kuna he's he's best when you let him off that left left hand side and let him go roam. I don't think today was that type of game. Leads are very fit, very aggressive and today was about showing fight and not quitting and I don't know about you crooy but for me it raises more questions. Why can you fight and have that ability to turn it on in moments? Why isn't that always on? Why isn't that button always there to be pressed for Man United >> midweek against Atletico Madrid? again the performance was better but but Troy Troy is right um you know this is a group of players and that's why I was confident actually he wouldn't get beat today it's a group of players who do turn up when they want and also toss it off um when they want as they did at Hull in particular on the opening day of the season so let's see what sort of response they get now at Ko in midweek and and Bournemouth at home next weekend are a team who've caused a lot of problems for Manchester United in recent seasons they turn up in in the grudge games they turn up in the games against the the so-called big six but ultimately That's not that's that's not where the season is going to be defined, you know, with the 1-1 draw at Leads. I think the season is going to be defined on what happens between now and the November international break. >> Nice of you to describe Leeds as one of the members of the Big Six. Uh there'll be the last >> No, I said it was a grudge match. >> All right. Sorry. Um by the way, Troy, bit of breaking news. And we know that you love a bit of breaking news uh on this program. Um he's jumped off the Tigers charge by the way. He has in flip-flop style decided you're not going to hear anything more about the Tigers anymore because they're going to go on a bit of a dreadful run from now on. He's decided that's it. So, he's off he's off the bandwagon. >> I'm not off the bandwagon at all. Um but I do feel like their last couple of performances have not been great and they're at home to Brenford >> because they were sparkling beforehand. >> They're at home to Brenford next weekend. I feel like Yeah, I feel like the tide could be turning on the Tigers. >> Yeah, we we all agree with you. Don't worry. We we thought that from the start, so it's fine. Thanks for getting on board, mate. >> Um leads were decent from tea to green, but didn't bring their putter. Toothless in the final third, apart from Calbertt Leuen, who has 17 goals since the start of last season. I don't know if you've seen this brilliant sort of podcast where he describes the sort of the process that he went through to identify how to make sure his body was fit. And he did it on his own. and he really drilled down into lots of different metrics and body measurements and everything possible to solve all the fitness issues that he had and now has done it and he's been fit for nearly two years and boy you've seen how good he can be. >> Okay. Well, I love the fact that it's only now at 29. So 27 years of age he went I keep getting injured. I'm going to have a look into this myself and figure it out. 27 years old. Now we're going well done. Well done. Well done. you're fit and available cuz you did some work. Um, yeah. >> Isn't the isn't the point actually though that after after the the situation found himself at Everton where he was never fit and he was relying on their medical staff and he was almost I know that they were trying a lot of stuff with him. They were changing the seats in his car and they were changing the bed that he slept in and he was going through all of that and he was relying on their expertise that in the end he decided to take matters into his own hands and say look I can't rely on anybody else. I have to do this myself now. >> Yeah. and all the excuses go as well, right? When you say you do it yourself, you can't blame anybody else. So, you know, fair play to him. Congratulations for that element. But what he has also shown then if you're anyone who works at Everton, you should be out on on your ear then because you've been blingging it for so long. So, a player could figure it out on himself and all of you lot with your metrics get out of there because you don't know what you're talking about. >> Um, they do have a real problem though with early kickoffs, don't they, Lead United? Can't just be a coincidence. 21 Premier League games without a a winning matches kicking off >> uh before 300 p.m. going back to the 3-0 win over Chelsea 22 years. >> Yes, maybe he he could take this research project on himself as well. Professor Dominic, um it's the longest run of its kind in Premier League history. He's had too much sleep, hasn't he? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. After 3:00 they come out like werewolves. What What's the reason for that? I don't know. It's bizarre. I mean, listen, the atmosphere out road under the lights is is is pretty unique, I think, in in terms of sanitiz Premier League football. Um maybe maybe this game kicking off too early did dilute the atmosphere somewhat. Maybe Manchester United did that a little bit with their performance in the first half, but it's certainly an issue, isn't it? And it's going to undermine their ambitions to to finish in the top half of the table to potentially uh push for a European place. They do have they do have issues when it comes to this fixture as well. Well, I think you have to go back to Harry Q for the last time they beat um Manchester United at home. United don't lose at Ellen Road. >> Yeah, I think Leeds fans are going to be frustrated that they didn't take advantage of a poor Manchester United team actually, but if you're being realistic, Leaded's only defeat this season was to Arsenal and they were unlucky to lose that game. They probably shouldn't have lost that game. They're the better team for 60 70 minutes in that match. So, do we need a little bit of perspect perspective there, Troy? >> I think so. Yeah. to to turn around and say that that wasn't a good result for Man United would be unfair and and not true. I thought Man United had a it was a good uh I was not going to say good performance. It was a there was a lot of positive to take from that if you're Michael Carrick. The togetherness, the willingness to fight and the fact that you didn't lose. You put put um you know a stop to that rock when there was the most pressure. I had them losing the game. I don't think many people had them winning the game. Um but all in all, they did well. They did well. There's a lot to take from it and leads have been a good team and they're going to be in the Premier League for a good five or six years now unless they absolutely get it wrong in the transfer market. >> Uh this weekend it was reported that a new deal is in the offing for Daniel Farer. What do you know? What do you know? >> Yeah, I did that in the notebook a few weeks ago that the talks were pretty positive that he wanted to stay. They obviously want to keep him. He's up at the end of the season, but yeah, it's going to happen. and and deservedly so. There were a lot of question marks about Daniel Farer. And actually, if you remember, there was a possibility that they removed him from office even after he won promotions to the Premier League because they were concerned by his record in the top flight. But I think he's proved what a good manager is now that he's actually got the tools because at Norwich, he was never given the the finances really to to make them a competitive outfit in the in the top division. >> Well, there's that amazing shot, isn't there, at the end of the season when they get promotion. He's sitting on his own in the dugout, isn't he? it it looks like he's he's he's finished. >> I think he knew he was under pressure >> even though he'd got promoted. So, it was a it was it was a very strange sort of tableau to see after a team had got promoted back uh to the the Premier League. You don't usually celebrate like that. Uh talking of celebrations, there'd be a lot of celebrations on the South Coast tonight. Brighton five, Crystal Palace nil. Crookies switch from the Tigers. He's now very much a seagull, let me tell you that. Um only Barcelona have more league goals across Europe after their opening seven games than third place Brighton Albian have now racked up 23 goals. But as much as it would be lovely, absolutely lovely and we will we deserve to give Brighton big leagues. >> We have to talk about Crystal Palace because Crystal Palace were pathetic. Absolutely miles off it and they have been all season. Even in the game that they won against Nottingham Forest, they were distinctly second best. Not second best, they were third best. Even the officials were better than Crystal Palace on that afternoon. And somehow they still
