We'll look at the papers, but I'm just saying you've got the sun open and as you see a headline Carrick. >> So, look, it's not all down to Michael Carrick. I mean, it goes a lot deeper than Michael Carrick. I mean, look at the look at the fantastic managers they've had who's really failed there. >> You know, I think you got to look really, really high. >> Weird. It's a weird one. >> What would have happened in your side, Tony Adams side, if someone like Bruno had come out and said what he said? >> You can't say that. >> Would he have been chinned? >> Yeah. You you >> Martin Bosch. Well, you you don't you don't do that after a game. Really don't. You you do that behind closed doors. You have a a real you know, we used to have meetings when we lost the game. It's especially under Arsenal Minga because he was a different sort of manager than uh George Graham. George Graham would hammer you after the game really go into any player who thought it was their fault or whatever. >> Where Arson Wenger, we lost two or 3, he would say, "Right, okay. We'll all go home and we'll have a meeting Monday morning." And what happens then? He watches back. Yeah. >> The tape 10 times and they know exactly why it's gone wrong and and then they nailed the right people then cuz sometimes you get nailed and it ain't your fault. >> And you and you don't want to bite though. You don't bite with George Graham and certain managers >> but Arson Ben used to always look at it look back at it and then he do the meeting and say well where was you when that your man was running there I was covering him and and all that sort of stuff. So he he done it in a different way but you don't do that. You don't do that to your manager. No >> you really don't. Morning. How are we doing? >> Good. >> It's very tanned. I know the sun wasn't out, but quite a tan. >> We had two or three days. That is that is the rose blood pressure. >> No, that is a lot of golf as well. >> Yeah, you're looking very well. Very well. Um, less can be said for United. They are across the back pages. Uh, of course, in the Daily Mail, United at war. Uh, the Star says the United Circus rolls on. in the Sun Ed Devils. Uh the Mirror, Manchester United are in crisis. Carry on regardless. Uh and then there is speculation uh from the Times and the Guardian about who could replace uh Michael Carrick. Uh despite the fact the Times are saying that Carrick will be in charge at the weekend. United are hosting Bournemouth on Sunday. Uh the Guardian are saying that United are considering their options in the eye. Emory is ranked as a dream candidate to replace charact four years. I think he's been at Villa this weekend. >> Great job, isn't he? He's he's not going to go there. Um but that we understand at talksport though that Fabian Herzler has said he is not interested. He's saying at Brighton he's not interested. Um Ray, would you say it's fair that Carrick has lost the dressing room at this stage? Uh Bruno Fernandez is going to keep uh his amazing. Yeah, really. >> I'd like to lose that of the dressing room. Half of them. Get rid of them. >> Oh yeah, there's there's a lot of problems at Manchester United and you know what he done for the team last season. he got them all playing again and they got into Europe and all going the right way then suddenly it's gone the other way now isn't it? I mean as as as much as you you're frustrated as a player sometimes and you might not agree with managers and their decisions and whatever whatever whatever you don't come out and say and have a go at the manager. That's one thing you don't you might go knock on his door uh and say look can I have a a quick meeting with you? Do you think you've played the right tactics? We could have done that better. and you have a onetoone with him what no one knows about but you don't come out live on on you know what it's going to going to do for >> and no one wants to see that of your Man United fan I don't want to see the captain having a go at the manager's decision what he's done >> says that he he won't face any action after his comments and we expect him to have the armband >> well he's the best player that's the problem you know >> it takes a brave manager to leave him out you know the United need a result >> you know what as well when they took him off I mean he's shaking his head wasn't he walking around the pitch going and that That's not a good sign. >> Yeah. And in in terms of that replacement, as you said, talk to understands that Fabin Herzler is is not interested with the utmost respect to Brighton, is that a sign of where Manchester United are that they can't currently tempt the Brighton manager away from that club? >> I think you got to look a lot bigger than the manager. I think there's a lot of problems higher. I mean, since the since the glazes, how it's all gone downhill, wasn't it? I mean, >> Ray, how'd you change it, though? >> I don't know how they change it. Yeah. You can't get rid of the guy who owns it, can you? >> No. No. I mean, that's the big problem they've got is, you know, Arsenal went through this problem with the conc when when Elon is out, they're not they're not back in. And suddenly they got they got it right. They had a focus to say this is where we're going to push the club. And if you look at their record in America with all the teams they've had, they've done really well with all the teams. And now you can see what they've done now. Quank has been brilliant for for Arsenal football club. But Glazes are not they're not doing enough, are they? But Manchester United the biggest club in the world. you you got all the support, you got everything there, but now they haven't got the team, have they? The team is I don't know. I mean, people expect Man United to be there in their best, but I don't look at Man United. I said the other night Ko beat him before he even kicked off. I said Como a good side and Manchester United be coming going there and it's going to be a difficult game. People go, "No, Man United will win that no problem." No, no, no. I'm telling you now, Ko decent. >> The circus carries on. >> I wasn't surprised with that. Was you? Was you surprised? >> No, not at all. No, Cesar's done a brilliant job with Ko. >> Yesterday, Simon Jordan made his views clear on Carrick and his future. >> I don't see it as the players against the manager. I just think that you demand respect and you do it in a certain way. However you do it, whether it was Mourinho came from a different position. He was a translator. He commanded respect by the personality and the charisma. Ferguson was a different animal. There is no set pattern for how you engender response in people. But there is a feeling for me that Michael Carrick doesn't have it at that level. I'm not sure his assistant is strong enough to be able to enforce some of the regime. Yeah, I think he's a very good football man. I think he's probably a very good coach, >> but I'm not sure there's a lot of decision- making uh uh in that in that framework that uh aids and a bets big clubs achieving things. >> For more Michael Carrick's future, let's cross over to a man who knows him inside out. the man who actually wrote Carrick's autobiography, top football writer and broadcaster, our good friend Henry Winter. Henry, good morning. >> Morning, Henry. >> Morning, Alan. Morning, Ray. How are we? >> We are very well, Henry. It's Friday. Lovely. The weekend's here, so it's always good. Henry, um Manchester United, uh we seem to be talking about them all the time for the wrong reasons. Um Koma was always going to be difficult, but they got absolutely played off the park, battered. And of course, Michael getting peltters. How will he cope with this? I don't know, Michael at all, Henry. You do. How will he cope? I think he'll feel a little bit betrayed by a couple of these players. >> Well, yeah, particularly Bruno Fernandez the other night. I mean, you got to have sympathy for for the player looking back on it because uh he's his house back here sort of suffered a burglary. So, thoughts go out to to to Bruno and and and his family and hope that they're all sort of okay. um going to be interesting at training today. I mean Bruno Fernandez was was taken off in the 67th minute. I mean he wasn't playing particularly well. You would expect the captain, the football of the year, the PFA player of the year to raise his game and rally the players and and he didn't. So I thought it was a legitimate substitution. But it's interesting that the narrative around Carrick at the moment when you look at last season and everyone was saying fantastic has qualified them for for the Champions League. he picked up a distressed asset post Ruben Amaran and and they did well and Steve Holland who's been getting a slight kicking as as his assistant was actually a lot of people towards the end of the the season were praising his coaching and the impact that that he'd had at Carrington. So I think needs a little bit of perspective. The the summer transfer window was a disaster. Manchester United fans and you guys on talk sport have been and Crookie have been sort of highlighting this you know since the window. They needed a left back, didn't get one. They needed a backup striker, didn't get one. They overspent on midfield. They don't need Yuri Tielemans. They don't need Andre Santos. Biba will absolutely, you know, that's a smart signing, but the the defense needed strengthening. So, Carrick effectively went into the new season with on hand slightly tied behind his back. Look, he's made mistakes as well. And and Jordan's points, I'm Jordan's point about the sort of the charisma which you need in the dugout. I mean, Carrick's a very determined, very meticulous, dedicated individual. He'll be driving into into Carrington now. Um, and maybe he needs, you know, in the modern world of the sort of the Marinos and and people deserveies who are very expressive in the dugout, maybe you do need that charisma in the press conference and in the dugout. You guys played and you, you know, you played for for great managers, you know, Bobby Robson, Arson Wenger, and how they will transmit their personality and their energy to the players on the pitch in in different ways, but definitely there. So maybe Carrick needs to do so there's look there's fault on all sides obviously coming from the top and the and the wretched glazes the Jim Ratcliffe to Barardo and Will Cox you know so it whoever steps into that position it you know there are you know if Michael Carrick does go there systemic flaws in Manchester United which inhibit the chances of any coach going in there. you do do you think there is someone out there Henry who can do a better job because Michael you know you still got the same sort of players um and he done a brilliant job last year and I I I didn't I didn't like what Bruno Fernandez said about the manager. I think if you want to have a words with him you do it behind closed doors and you sort it out between yourselves. You don't come out publicly and say that because you threw him he's thrown him under the bus. The captain has thrown the manager under the bus really. it absolutely totally I mean I was I mean maybe that's Bruno Fernandez's character to an extent u maybe one of the reasons why I voted for Techan Rice as football of the year head of Bruno Fernandez who got voted I I don't think he's a natural leader I mean I know society's changed and dressing rooms have changed from when you guys were in it and you think of the leaders that Manchester United had in in you know the last you think of the Steve Bruce and the Brian Robson I know it's a slightly different era but they were real sort of proper leaders in there who would never Keane absolutely you know who I mean Carrick himself was a quieter captain from 17 to 18 but you know they've had some great captains down the years Gary Neville you know Gary Neville was a very much a leader embodied that uh that defiance and I don't think Bruno Fernandez does that maybe that's a slightly modern thing as as well but yeah I mean it's going to be interesting authority today >> we were thrown a few names about I think talks were might have been the first report United interesting I think it was uh crookie Julian Nagglesman. But what about um I did see on Sky coming up um Gareth Southgate and what about Eddie How? What about Eddie How? >> Well, there four names in the frame. Um Nugglesman as you mentioned that will be an interesting fit there. Conti is slightly explosive character. How does that go down with uh with Inios Southgate? I mean he's moved on. I mean I'm working for him effectively at the moment. Got to mention that. Uh he's got his own sort of media empire podcast. Uh I mean Herzler obviously he is flavor of the month and rightly so. He's a fantastic coach. He's just signed a new contract at Brighton so he'll be expensive to get out. And as you say Eddie how as well how well that would go down with with some Manchester United fans remains to be seen but I think Carrick deserves these four games towards the international window. I as you say Bournemouth, Chelsea, Roma and Villa and then make a make a call. How have the players responded? How have the fans responded? Do Manchester United really need another managerial change when the problem at United is systemic. >> One last one and you mentioned them four games there. Do you think the the the prospective manager who they may have already sounded out and sused out? I don't know. Do you think you'll look at them games, I'll just give it another couple of weeks before I make my mind up if I want to go there. >> Uh yes, but I think it's Manchester United. I mean, the fact that we're we're we're talking about there's so many other issues. It's Manchester United. >> It used to be it used to be Henry. >> Yeah, but sorry, they're still a huge huge club from a media perspective. They're the biggest story in town. Always Manchester United and they you don't lose that overnight. So, look, I'm sure it'll be attractive financially. A manager, out of work manager like a Ki might look at that squad and think I can get more out of them. But if you're going to make a decision, make it into in the international break. give Carrick these four games to see if he can turn around and if these players are going to respond to him. >> Henry, nice one. Have a great weekend, mate. >> Have a great weekend. >> Another one you could chuck in there. Pochettino. >> Yeah. Yeah. No, I totally agree with Emry there. Give him another four games and see how it goes. >> But the reaction be interesting this weekend. >> Not easy games, right? >> Got to score the first goal, haven't they? >> Four tough games. >> Right. Okay. Top football writer and broadcaster Henry Winter there. For more of Henry, listen to Sunday edition this weekend on Talk Sport.
