"HE CLEARED THE DECKS!" Dean Saunders URGES Man Utd to learn from Mikel Arteta's PROJECT at Arsenal!
Dean Saunders urges Man Utd to learn from Mikel Arteta's Arsenal project as pressure grows on Michael Carrick
The video discusses Man Utd's poor run and the pressure on Michael Carrick. Rene Meulensteen and Ander Herrera argue for patience, Dean Saunders says United should learn from Arteta's Arsenal rebuild, and fans split between appointing Conte and sticking with Carrick while criticising the defence, recruitment and direction.
- Man Utd should not sack Carrick — A few months ago Carrick had United third and playing well with good structure and organisation; changing manager is not the solution, and they should identify what changed before two wins can restore form.
- Man Utd's defence and work rate are not good enough to challenge for trophies — The same back line has conceded goals for years, and the front players sometimes only pretend to press instead of really putting opponents under pressure.
- Carrick is the man to bring success and trophies back to Man Utd and should be given time — The Premier League is much more competitive now, with almost the top eight strong; coaches need time to build, and he believes Carrick can make them compete.
- Man Utd should copy Mikel Arteta's Arsenal project by giving the manager time and clearing out bad attitudes — Arteta took five years, first removing players who were just picking up wages such as Aubameyang, Lacazette, Sanchez and Pepe, then signing players with good attitudes; Arsenal now have no bad attitudes in the squad, which is why they are doing well.
- Man Utd should appoint Antonio Conte — Conte is a proven winner with fire, passion and a winning mentality that United have lacked for years; he may be difficult and not stay long, but he would shake things up, and the fan does not want another five-year project.
- Martinez's public criticism of the hierarchy is acceptable — He is saying what the fans are thinking, that the top is not good enough; he is Argentinian, wears his emotions openly, and it is natural for him to get frustration off his chest.
- Carrick should be backed 100% and given time — United's problem is that people are pulling in different directions; he would also have kept David Moyes, and Conte's outburst at Tottenham did not end well, so it would not help United.
- United are affected by fixture congestion and the international break, which hurts their running stats — There are more games this season and many players were abroad during the international break; Tottenham benefited from time off and are playing better, showing rest helps.
- Not keen on Conte coming to Man Utd — At Tottenham he had Son, Kulusevski and Harry Kane playing almost like two full-backs, with Harry Kane in his own half, and it was boring every week.

But now it's all eyes on Michael Carrick this. I feel we're I feel we're really putting pressure more pressure on Michael. It's I like Michael Carrick. I hope he doesn't lose his job. But anyway, it's all eyes on him this Sunday as he takes his United sight island road to face high-flying lead United. United have won only two of their opening nine so far this season, sitting 13th in the table with many suggesting that Michael will be sacked if they lose this weekend. To add insult to injury for Carrick, he has to deal with Martinez outbursts against the club's hierarchy, but he has since apologized and will face a fine, a hefty fine. So, could a defeat to leads be Carrick's final straw? Well, we asked that to former United assistant Renie Mullenstein earlier this morning on Talk. >> If you look back a few months ago, Manchester United was flying under the Mar Carrick. They were third in the league. They were playing great football again. Everybody was thinking listen this is great. So I can understand that every player in that squad because they have gone through some turbulent seasons, they wanted to kick on and what happens the opposite has happened and you ask yourself how's that possible? What has changed? You know, I can't I can't I can't really put my finger on it myself because they had a whole preseason they can work through it and you think listen just just carry on where we left off. They shouldn't sack him. You know why? Because again you're bringing somebody else. I hear names and this and that the other. I mean that's not the problem. Address address the problem. Like I said, Dino, a few months ago, everything was fantastic. Everybody was playing well. United was playing well. There was a good structure, a good organization. He has to go back with his staff very, very quickly and say, "Okay, what were the key parameters why we were so good five four, five months ago? Where have we lost it?" Now, address that and then carry on again because you're only again two wins away from, you know, finding form again. So, I wouldn't I wouldn't do that if I would be the club. >> Ready Mullenstein. Did you get the impression though when I mention um what's his name? Um United manager, Dutchman. Van >> Vanal. >> Van Gal. I was going to say Van Hal. Well, whatever. Yeah, you can see both. >> I got the impression that Renie didn't get on, >> didn't he? >> Did you not notice that this morning about Van Hal? No, maybe it was me. Maybe it was just me, but I just thought, >> by the way, I could I could read out the list of players he signed that didn't do very well for >> Give me a couple. So >> that's what you're asking was it? >> Well, you've got e sign. >> I agree with you. I I'm with you. Don't worry. >> Depay Swinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Romero, Martial, um Darmian, remember him? >> Yeah, >> there's there's it's endless. >> He did sign Shaw though, didn't he? >> He signed Yeah, I think he signed Luke Shaw. He signed Herrera, uh, Rogo, Di Maria, Blint, Mensah, Valdez. >> It's amazing. And when you think about where the money goes and you think who is a real raging successor, you there's not >> the only one you can say is Bruno Fernandez and he ain't won enough. >> No. >> Playing for Man United who should be winning everything. >> Let me ask the next question. Are the players playing for Michael? >> You know, sometimes you can see a team and say, "Nah, it's gone. The dressing room's gone." I don't see that in United or or lack of running, lack of effort. Does that that worries you, Dino? Because you were the opposite. You are full of running, full of effort. >> No, but it's not just me. Your first line of defense is up there. Mhm. >> If you front three, >> spoke to Graham Sonus yesterday about it. >> Yeah. No glitch and rush. >> You and and you can easily shadow box if you like and pretend to close down in in third gear or you can actually do it like Lewis Kumas does it where he's actually trying to get the ball off you and putting people under pressure so the midfield players nick the ball behind you. >> Yeah. >> Um there's two things for me. You say you can't put your finger on it. >> How about this? Shaw, Maguire, Martinez, and Darlow. The same back four. Then you can even add to that Euro, Delet, and Heaven. Would you take any of them? >> Well, delay, I don't know what's happened to Delay. You know, I used to like him. >> But if you're trying to win the league, any league, would you take any of those? They're still there. Four years to win the league. No, >> they've been letting goals in for four years. >> And it's the same back four. Darlow the other night, it was like as if he was a a testimonial >> the way he was playing. Dilly Darling on the ball. >> He's young. He's young. But that makes no difference. You should learn by now. Um but you know, you're right. When you think of some of the great United center backs pairings, they had tough as old boots. You know, >> Alistister Bruce win >> run through a brick wall. >> Then you got Ferdinand um who's the >> the Dutchman. >> Yeah. But like brilliant defenders, but you got to have a good back four if you're trying to win the league, trying to win things. >> Stam. Sorry. >> Stam. Yeah. Um and Vidic, >> another one. Sorry, there's another >> endless. >> Um, [clears throat] but >> Man United's Man United are not right at the back. >> Yeah, >> it's simple. They're not right at the back and they're not working hard enough. >> Okay. One man who knows Michael Carrick inside out is his former United teammate Ander Herrera, who sat down with Rio Ferdan for his podcast Real Meets. Herrera was asked if Carrick is the man to bring success back to Old Trafford. We have to give in time because as I told you before Premier League that I found was not the same Premier League that you found and Michael when he got in charge the Premier League now is not top four, top five, it's almost top eight, you know. So now I think we have to give time to the coaches, to the managers to build something, to create something and and I think Karik is is the man. I want him to be the man, but I also believe he's the man to to bring trophies to the club, to bring I don't know I don't know if if he will win the Premier League in two, three years, but he he's going to be there. He's going to be competing. I I'm sure of that. >> And Herrera there, he's put a lot of weight on since he's finished football and he's like a rake. Unbelievable. >> He was, wasn't he? Yeah. >> No, he is now. That was him now. But um it's difficult. It's when you ask about your mate who's a manager now and you you you don't want to say anything negative about him. He's your pal. You played with him. You've gone through some great and hard times together. But it's difficult to be honest, isn't it? To tell the absolute truth. I look I hope he turns it around and I was glad to give him the job at the end of the season. I thought they've got to give him that run. I just don't know what's happened since Dino. >> No, but the best way to look at it is look at Arteta the way five years it took him. >> Wow. Oh, they give them time, didn't they? Absolutely. >> First thing you had to do was get rid of the people who were just picking their wages up. >> Aubameyang Lacazette Sanchez. >> Yeah. >> Uh he was a midfield player, German, mid middle of midfield. Played for play for Germany 100 times. Remember him? Great player. Good footballer. >> Arsenal. >> Yeah. But he come to the end of the road anyway. But they had Pepe on the wing. He got rid of it's like a disease. >> Jogging around in training, walking about in training, not having people, nailing people in training. I mean, verbally nailing them for not trying. >> It goes onto the pitch. >> And Artet has cleared the decks. He's signed some players with good attitudes. There's not one player in that Arsenal squad that's got a bad attitude. >> That's why they're doing well. Can't play well every week, >> but you cannot get beat every week, >> no matter who you are. I wasn't a Martinelli fan, but you couldn't you couldn't uh you couldn't point the finger say his attitude is bad. He worked his socks off, >> didn't he? >> Yeah, I know. And even Jesus, who wasn't playing, he was a really good player. >> He won't get a game. He still when he come on, he put the effort in and he's got the club running in the right direction. Man United need to do that. >> Correct. So, is Michael the man to bring success back to United? Can he turn it around or if things go wrong at Ellen Road, is it time to look elsewhere? Let's head to the phone lines. to speak to Jake who's a Manchester United fan. Jake, morning. Welcome. >> Morning Jake. >> Hi. How you doing, Jay? >> Oh, hi Jay. How are you? >> Yeah, sorry. I'm very good. I'm very good. How about yourselves? >> Yeah, good. Good. Go on, mate. Go on Jay. >> Good. Um, I'm just went on the point you put about earlier about Conte and Herzel. At this point in time, I think I'd probably take Conte. Um, he's a proven winner. He's got that fire, the passion. He's got a winning mentality, and I think United need that. Um, and if I'm being honest, I think it's been missing for years. Um, I know he he might be a difficult character to work with, but I think he'll really shake it up and and I know he doesn't stick around clubs that long, but I think we need >> I don't know. I don't want another fiveyear project and we get back to this stage where we're at now. I think >> if he goes in, russes a few feathers, says what it needs to be said, and I I'll be honest with you, I'm glad Martin has said what he said after the game. I I I I can see from a team perspect perspective it might not be great but as a fan we're all thinking it >> the top's not good enough. We bought three midfielders. Santos is 48 million. He's pretty much been on the bench. Why didn't we use that money for a left back? Why didn't we use that money for a backup striker? Why didn't we look at Watkins? Why didn't we look at Mateta? Cesco's injured. There's so many more problems than the midfield. I think >> Jay, fair enough. But would you go out in public and hammer your boss? I I can see where that is. I I get where you're coming from. Yeah, I'm I'm my own boss, so I'd probably have to hammer myself, but um I I can see where you mean, but maybe that was just a frustration, his nature. He's Argentinian. He wants to say how he feels. He's got it off his chest. And it's kind of as a fan, I'm thinking, you're reflecting how we're feeling as well. So it's not and some people are then looking at it and going well they're not trying. There's no effort. He has got some passion and he's frustrated that it's not going it's not going right. >> Okay Jay. So you you didn't mind that. Interesting. >> I must admit I I'll hold my hands up starter the season. I thought United and Liverpool would both be up there. I thought they both have a much better season. What about Curtis? Another Manchester United fan. Curtis, welcome. Morning. >> Hi Curtis. >> Morning guys. You all right? >> Yeah good mate. Good. >> Good. Good. Uh yeah, I I I stick with Garrick 100%. Um I I don't want to pick holes in what what the last person just said and it's kind of a big a big issue what I think we've got going on at the minute. I think we need to be united. I think that's what I think that's that's the issue we are Manchester United and I think we all seem to be pulling in a bit of different directions at the minute. Um I' I would have kept David Moyes. I'm pretty sure I rang up saying that I'd keep 10. I I think we need to give all the managers a little bit of time. Um just touching on a couple of factors what what what you guys have just said there. >> Um I think stuff like as you saying the attitude and stuff seems to have changed. We have um just what Dino was saying about getting rid of our getting rid of some people. We have let somebody come back this season who's had a bit of an attitude problem in the past who's on quite big wages. Um, so I I don't know if that seems to have ruffled a few feathers or or rock the boat a bit. >> Going on to Antonio Conte, >> he come out and blew everybody up at at Tottenham. That didn't end too great. They've not started winning leagues since he turned up and did that. So I don't see how that's going to benefit us. Um, and I think one of the main things going into this season for United was can you handle the amount of games? There's going to be a lot more games this season. Um, and going going off off the running running stats, I think it's just having a bit of an impact if I'm being realistic. I think we had a big international break. A lot of our players were abroad. Don't get me wrong. I know a few stayed at home, but you got to have everybody there to be playing well. I mean, look at the Tottenham team. They've they've had it effectively a couple of weeks off. They've managed to get their heads together playing good football. That's that that that seems to have benefited them. Um I mean obviously we lost against Brighton 3-2. We got absolutely slated for that. Arsenal get beat 3-0 by Brighton. Brighton are a great team. Look how good Brighton are. >> Yeah. >> We lost we lost Everton. We lost to Everton off Niles >> and they're Yeah, correct. Curtis, look it could all turn around. The lead's game you know there's more to that hatred between both clubs and the fans or more so the fans makes it even more interesting. But there is some names about you know Eddie how um Conte just mentioned uh Poch would Poch come back you know I was with him the other day he's a big toddler man still but would he come back he would come back to the Premier in my opinion didn't tell me that but in my opinion he would kenna's about who knows about United knows about Spurs as well so >> you know what I would say about Kale I mean if I asked is it Gary just gone >> yeah if I asked Gary would you take as a front three son Kulichesky and Harry Kane he'd say yes wouldn't Can you remember how Kante had them playing >> at Spurs? Go on. >> All three of them were playing. They were playing like two fullbacks, Son and >> and Harry Kane in his own half. >> Remember you got it was boring every week. >> I'm not sure I'm a Conte fan to be honest. But anyway, coming up, can the Fabio can Fabio get his revenge on Daniel Dubois? It's live on Talk Sport tomorrow night. We're going to preview that punchup next.
