Simon Jordan & Sean Dyche HEAP PRAISE on Phil Foden after Champions League HAT-TRICK!
talkSPORT discusses Phil Foden's form, position and prospects at Manchester City and for England after his Champions League hat-trick
The show reacts to Phil Foden's hat-trick in Manchester City's 5-1 Champions League win over AEK Athens. The guests praise his talent and attitude while debating his best position, whether a fresh start would help and whether he can break into England's starting XI. The overall take is that Foden remains a valuable player and far from a letdown, though his ideal role and England place remain unresolved.
- Guardiola and Manchester City rate Foden very highly, valuing him not only as a player but also as a person. — Guardiola is a top manager who keeps using him, and the club keeps giving him new contracts, which shows they know his worth.
- It is unfair to portray Foden as a letdown; he is already an excellent player with plenty more to come. — He came into the first team at 16 or 17, has carried huge pressure, is still in England's thinking with around 50 caps, and is now in the most balanced phase of his career in terms of experience and energy.
- It is understandable if Foden wants a fresh start, but leaving would not guarantee he kicks on to the next level. — He knows how Manchester City operate, and there is no guarantee he would succeed in a new team.
- Foden's Champions League hat-trick felt like a second coming for him in terms of form and confidence. — A coach said after the game that they would help him and were sure he would help them this season, and Foden responded with a hat-trick.
- Foden is not an out-and-out centre-forward, and his best position remains unresolved; whether he should play off the left, off the right, as an 8 or as a 10 is still the big debate. — He still has a good scoring rate for a player who is more of a 10 or wide player, so pinning down his role is tricky.
- Foden's versatility is both an advantage and a disadvantage for a manager. — The upside is that he can deliver decent performances in several positions; the downside is that it is hard to nail him down in one role and give him the shirt for good.
- For England, Foden would probably not displace Gordon on the right or Bellingham in the No.10 role. — Looking directly at those position battles, the answer to both questions is likely no.
- Foden deserves credit for staying at Manchester City and waiting for his chance; he is an effective player. — Unlike Sancho, who left when he could not wait for opportunities, Foden stayed within City's framework and eventually took his chance.
- Foden has not quite kicked on to the next level after his 23-24 peak, but any club manager would be delighted to have him. — He has already shown efficient output, and from a manager's perspective such a player is very useful in the squad.

Um, are you enjoying watching football a lot? You must be asked that all the time, Sean. You're watching it. You're not centrally involved in it. >> Yeah, I mean, it depends because you watch some, you know, like as a as a fan, which is not easy when you've, you know, managed and and still sort of looking like a manager, if you know what I mean, looking at games like a manager that is. >> Yeah, >> I did a bit for UA. I covered their the Bay game versus Vacin, which I thought was interesting. I've got another one tonight for them. Villa tonight versus Vein as well. So, yeah. Um I thought it was Viking but apparently it's Viking just in case anyone's here. Just in case worried about my >> call them Viking >> annunciation. Yeah. But uh yeah so I've quite enjoyed that side. I think that's an analytical viewpoint. >> I was going to say when you're working with what you're doing. >> Yeah. That's not common. It's a good shy. It's not commentary. It's an analytical view. So you give a manager view of how the game's breaking down one team against the other different styles different things. They use it for learning things. Put it in brochures comments player of the match you know stuff like that. So that's been that's been quite interesting. We we we basically give a view and they break it down our view with the analytics and and add it all together. >> So all these media appearances normally when you lot are in the media >> that's not appearance that's private but >> when you're doing when you're doing a lot of media stuff whether it's this show or other shows normally you lot when you're doing these appearances cuz like some demented cuckoo waiting to jump in some poor bugger's nest that's about to be sacked. Um is that your intention? >> Well to be fair it's usually >> Welcome Sean. No, it's usually a valid point, but on this occasion, as I've been doing this for months now, I don't think it's a valid point cuz I certainly wasn't looking to do that summer, you know, in the summer when everyone's on holiday. I weren't looking to get the England job. Let's put that way. >> You got No, I understand your point. We're all We've all seen it, haven't we, when a manager suddenly pops up when there's been noise about jobs. Not my style. I think everyone knows that. And I never turned up at Never been to a game when a man is under pressure. Never. >> Quite right, Sean. Plenty to talk about this morning. Um, I've only just seen that clip of Sir Alex Ferguson. I don't know if you've seen it, Simon. We'll get to it. Leaving Ellen Dro and some big mouth leads fan decided to let loose on him. I mean, the fell's 84, Sir Alex, good grief. And it's Sir Alex Ferguson. I mean, respect, where has it gone? Sean, Phil Foden, I used to look at Phil Foden and think this lad can do no wrong. And Manchester City certainly think that because in the summer he signed a new four-year contract. He's there until 2030. How good was it to see him back last night and shining in a City shirt in the Champions League? >> Well, I think I think from my point of view there there must be a reason for one why, you know, top manager Pep Guardi Island, mainly him, you know, had him around must have been a reason why he puts him in and out the side. I know there's times when he put him out the side, but I think it's fair to say we we would all give him a fair uh shout on being a very good judge of a player. They keep giving him contracts. So just as a club they must value him not only as a as a as a player but as a person as well. >> Yeah. >> Now whether he's going to light everyone's fire and and produce what we thought he was going to for one it's not that easy to be a top player year after year after year. I mean he come in the side at was it like 16 17 young >> you know. So he's already got an enormous amount of pressure on his shoulders at a very very young age. Not every youngster even stays in the game to the level that he's been at and he's still there and he's still around the England thinking he's got up like 49 50 counts. So if you look at it on a more tame view or my tame view, it it's like been more if you get what I mean that some of the noise makes out as if he's been a like a let down. I he's been he's been an amazing player and he's still got way more to come. Now he's going into what you would argue is the most balanced period of his career. You know, old enough but young enough. Young enough with his energy and his will and his desire and his edge, but old enough to know the game. >> He get all the other big sides, do you think? Well, well, I think I think there's some he would I mean another another debate and I'm sure we will debate is this idea of him going you know said does he need a fresh start which I understand that >> but even that is not a guarantee is it you rightly said you know he he does know how Man City do their business that's one thing we we can all we can all see that you know >> well well healed thinking would have you believe that he had a bit of an altercation with Guardiola last year in a team meeting where for for the f first time he really really challenged Guardiola which then Guardiola wasn't going to have and he marginalized him and gave him the and in the media it was he's a valuable player which is Guardiola's speak of a way of speaking about somebody in terms of you ain't playing but you're a valuable player. So interestingly some of the lack of representation last year might have been because he's coming of age he's asserting himself in a dressing room perhaps in the wrong moments and Guardiola probably would have none of it if you believe the well-healed uh thinking behind that. >> Would you believe that shot? Well, firstly, players do come of age. You're right. And and at times they do respond because now they're getting a bit more rounded like I said in their view. And sometimes as a manager, you have to go with that. Listen to it maybe a bit more than you were doing. >> Yeah. >> And that's probably fair. I would imagine Guardiola thinks, "All right, you have got a view now. You haven't so much got a view when you're 18 and you don't know what's going on." But you think >> I don't think it served him well with Guardian because well, yeah. Well, that's the thing. I'm not sure. >> Dropped out the picture for England for the time being. Will he get back in that picture? Is he going to become a regular fit in Moresca City? Moresca spoke about Foden's contribution uh following the game last night following that hattick in City's 5-1 win. This was Enzo Moresca. >> I was very happy with Phil uh even before the red card. To be honest, I said since day one that uh I consider him one of the best English player uh for different reason in the last two years, three years uh uh he was not good enough but uh I know how good is so we are just trying to help him because we are sure that he's going to help us uh this season. >> Wow. We'll help him because we're sure he'll help us. So I think this is a kind of second coming of Phil for >> I think one thing and I'm well aware of the power of man I've been on the wrong end of it a number of times scoring goals but he's still for a sort of a number 10 wire player who no one quite sure I think I checked roughly he's about still got 70 and roughly 22 22 30 games still a pretty good strike rate for someone you know what I mean he's not an out and out number nine you know what I mean he's and and I mean I know there's been a massive debate probably me included do you play him coming off the left do you play him coming off the right do you play him in the two eights do you play him in a tent. Well, no, that's the biggest debate. You know, >> would you play him if he was your player? >> Well, okay. As a manager, there's two ways of looking at this. The the fact that he can play all them positions and probably on a general rule of thumb deliver a decent performance and sometimes a very good one is very helpful. The downside of it is of course you're going where can we actually nail him in and go you are playing there end of and you are got the shirt you know you now carry the shirt for us. That's been the challenge for everyone. >> I mean the city should benefit from this. >> Well, it depends who you're asking the question of. Are you asking the question of an England manager? Where would you play if he was an England setup and who would his place would he take? Would he take Gordon's place coming in off the right? Would he take Duke Bellingham's place playing as a 10? The answer to both those questions is probably no. >> Where does he sit in the Man City hierarchy in terms of structure? Um, again look at the players they've got available to them and where does he sit in that in that particular realm which is why I asked him where if if indeed cuz I mean one of those he was what he was was a breath of fresh air in that Man City circumstance where he stayed where other players like Jadden Sancho didn't want to wait for their turn and out the door they went to try and find their opportunity somewhere else he stayed within the framework of Man City when he wasn't when he was being heralded as wonder kid but wasn't getting put in the side and so he stayed there so he showed the right attributes of wanting to prove himself and he subsequently got the opportunity to do so. Um I don't know what stage he's at his career, but he but certainly what he is is an effective player. >> Was it the season was it 2425ish when he when he ripped it when it when he was a player of the year and all that? >> Yeah. 23 24 23 24. >> Yeah. And I think that was the one where we all went Yeah. But that was the one when everyone went right, you're now going to go to the next level. Yeah. And he's and he's not, you know, he's not quite hit that next level, but what I'm saying is as a as a manager and a as a as a club manager, I think you'd be delighted to have him in your camp personally. Yeah. Do you know what I mean? >> Fantastic. Especially when you can play like that. >> That is what the expectation of everyone thought he was going to be. But as a as a club manager be going, I am so happy to have him in my camp. >> I'll bet. I'll bet. I wonder how City fans value Phil. I mean, you must be pleased that he's around and you must be pleased that he's showing form like that last night. AEK Athens. Yes. No disrespect to them, but Foden was in fire. Have you still in some ways have you yet to see the best of Phil Foden? I'll put that out this morning actually. Uh let's see what you think of that one. 03717234.
