Abbi Summers claims Spurs will finish in the TOP TEN | Abbi and Max: Talking Points
Abbi Summers says Spurs will finish in the top ten as she and Max debate Spurs and Man United
This episode mainly reviews Spurs against Man United, covering the red card, Spurs' mentality, squad and striker issues, and doubts over Michael Carrick at United. Abbi predicts Spurs will finish in the top ten, possibly sixth to eighth and in European football, while Max disagrees and says a top-ten finish would be lucky.
- Spurs played well against Man United and the draw should give them confidence — They controlled most of the game, pressed well and forced mistakes; Bruno Fernandes was poor, and Spurs equalised with ten men.
- The red card was stupid because the player fell for Luke Shaw's provocation, but the sending-off itself was correct — He did headbutt him, which is a red card in the modern game; Luke Shaw deserved a yellow for pushing but did not roll around.
- Spurs' key problem is mentality and they must learn to keep going in adversity — They often play well for 20 to 45 minutes, concede before half-time and drop their heads; fighting back with ten men against Man United could be a turning point.
- Turning Spurs and Man United around will take a long time because both clubs have a losing culture or mentality problem — Both are big clubs with huge revenues and complex issues; Spurs fans pay a lot to watch poor performances.
- Spurs' squad is deeper than last season but they still need a better striker — Their current forward options are limited, several attackers have injury or minutes restrictions, and the striker market is difficult; returning players should help.
- Man United fans do not fully believe in Michael Carrick because the board has not truly backed him — Carrick only got a two-year contract, no defenders were signed, the starting back four is similar to four years ago, and it looks like a half-hearted appointment; they may be waiting for someone else and it would not be expensive to sack him.
- You cannot blame Michael Carrick alone; Man United's players must do more — Man United were outrun by Spurs, Bruno Fernandes had a very poor game, and Tielemans has not looked close to his expected level; the personnel also has to be questioned.
- Abbi thinks Spurs will finish in the top ten, around sixth to eighth, and qualify for some form of European football; Max disagrees, saying Spurs will not finish in the European places and should be grateful for a top-ten finish — Abbi says Spurs finished 17th in back-to-back seasons, her personal target has always been the top ten, and the squad is better this season; Max gives no detailed reason and simply disagrees.
Abbi Summers claims in her new show with Max Scott that Spurs will finish either sixth or eighth this season. The two join forces for a brand new show Abbi & Max: Talking Points where they look at all the big stories from the weekend. I wanted to ask you is your overwhelming feeling one a positive one? >> Yeah. >> It's not. How weren't we 3-0 up at Halime? >> I think when you've been in the depths of hell where I've been over the last [laughter] couple years. Yeah. The pits, the despair of it all. Like I have actually been quite positive this season which has jarred quite a few people because I'm the first one to call out the board, the team, the manager. But I've actually taken a different approach this year because of how bad everything's been. And I'm aware of the fact that things take time to get better. So the first two games were unacceptable. I mean even you know what even the Newcastle game there were 20-minute spell where we again we should have scored. We should have been much better um than we were. I think the the score line would have said for for majority of that game. But the game against you it kind of stopped the losses. um questionable moments in that game but still Everton >> better came out the blocks flying tailed off >> Villa came out the blocks flying couldn't get the goal I felt that with United were awful but I still don't want to take away from the fact that I thought Spurs had a really good performance I thought that they played well for not just 20 minutes I thought that they played well for majority of the game yes second half there was a little bit of a reduction in pressure from Spurs but I actually thought what I could see what I want from Derby and what I can see he's trying to do I could see it a a lot clearer creating the chances. High press. >> The high press was brilliant. >> Very very good. >> You force so many mistakes out the likes of Kobe Mayu who usually the ball absolutely sticks to him. >> Also Bruno was terrible as well. I don't think it took what 24 minutes to complete one pass for him as well which is unheard of when you talk about Bruno Fernandez. So I thought Spurs have played really well. It just was the most frustrating thing. I was sitting there like we're never going to score. Like we're just never going to do it. But it's it's confidence and I think that that's what they can take away from this game that scoring and getting the equalizer late on also being down to 10 men then. >> What do you think about a red card? >> I think he's he's an idiot like Benor like you've completely he's whatever Luke Shaw set out to do. >> Yeah. >> You've you've just you've fallen for it. Do you know what I like from Deserby though? Rather than >> when he bit the ball or when he said >> well all that [laughter] no when he was talking about Benson rather than kind of understandably be angry that the player foolishly put his already struggling team into a really difficult position. >> I like the fact that >> he did what he said was pitch perfect. He said it's stupid. It's not it's not right because he did he did headbutt him. I know it's not like a headbutt you'd see in a street fight but it's not on in a on a football pitch. >> No. I mean I I also think they could have I mean maybe it's just the bias in me but I think a yellows all round would have would have >> you know that that's a red card for anyone in the in the sanitized modern game it is. And Luke Shaw didn't go down rolling on the floor. I thought fair play Luke Shaw sticking up for himself cuz two players had come in flying. He pushes him over. He deservedly gets the yellow card but Ben's lost its idiot. >> But what I like about Deserby is he's is he kind of acknowledged the passion that Benton C showing and that and that's what Spurs need. They need to sort of be dragged up by their bootstraps and I think fair play on Dominick Salanki wearing the captain's armband. He'd missed an absolute sitter and it's nothing more than it's the least that you deserved. It was exactly the least that we deserved. And so many times I felt that Spurs, it's about it's always about mentality. like we've played well for 20 minutes, half an hour, 45 minutes and then you know the new the the Villa game actually and the Newcastle game but Villa in particular >> we hadn't played badly and then you know they concede right before Halime their heads drop and that it's hard to get yourself back up especially when you've been at such a a low point for so long to get yourself back up to that level where you come back out and you're like right I'm ready to go again. So going one nil down having the red card still having the mentality to get yourself back. Salanki he's not I don't think he's completely sharp. I don't think it's a complete fit. He's had a lot of injuries since being at us as well. Preseason preseason sorry was very disrupted as well for him. But I just felt like we really deserved at least a point coming away from that. And I'm hoping it's a turning point. Hoping it's a turning point. They've got uh I think they've got seven or eight days now. They're going to Marba on a little team bonding trip where they didn't do that during international break or whatever. And then we got Coventry next Monday and I'm hoping that that is we also have to turn the home form around. Do you know you talk about turning points? Yeah. as a neutral watching Spurs and Manchester United, two big clubs, Manchester United, massive club, you know, in terms of the world football. It's like what it's like watching crops grow because because they're such big clubs and big institutions with huge sort of revenue streams and huge issues that change you you speak about and turning point I think is always going to be slow because both Manchester United and Spurs essentially have these sort of like losing culture and I'm not I'm not saying loser culture. I mean >> you could say that Spurs have a loser mentality. I would I don't dis disagree with that. >> Yeah. This isn't >> about trying to change that. >> Yeah, but what I'm not doing is calling Spurs fans losers. So on the heat. >> No, no, cuz I'm I'm not right. I I feel for Spurs fans. I've got I've got sort of family members that are died in the world Spurs fans >> and the money that you pay for the dross you're being served up >> is massive. But I think my point is it's going to take a long long time. >> I agree. And that's why I'm patient with it. Like I'm I've lost my head more times than I can count. I mean, there's probably thousands of clips of me doing that. And last season, I feel like last season in particular, I feel like all of them was just, you know, we got to a point where we had four managers and we were literally about to go down. So, all of that is just and the way that the club has been run has been disgusting. And obviously, they've now spent money. You can't expect it to just be okay overnight. Like, it doesn't work in any team. It doesn't. So, give it some time. The squad is significantly better overall in terms of depth than it was last year. And also, >> but it's still not the person Like in terms of a striker, >> it's still not there. It's definitely still not there. We need a better striker, but it's very hard. A striker market is difficult. I I actually think we would have probably looked maybe even got someone like a krooppy and spent the money on Crooppy had he not have got injured. Obviously, we didn't do that. The Rashison saga ridiculous situation. He obviously can't be registered anyway. So, all we have is Salanki and you can play Mammushes nine if you want to. Madison can't play more than 20 minutes. Cudas has just had his first few games back. can't play more than 60. Could say he's been out for over 500 days. We don't know what he's going to look like. He's obviously on the way back. We don't know what he's going to look like. Odbert's been out for again over a year. Javi Simmons been out. He won't be back until next year. So, there's a lot of players that are going to come back in in those attacking areas where they will look better and you know, who knows what we'll do in January as well. I actually thought Van Henessi as a partnership were good as well. I I enjoyed that little >> one of the big mistakes I think you've made is signing Van Hacker when you add Vuskovic. >> Yes, I know. I know >> and I know it's I can totally understand why deserve do it. He's got a relationship with Van Heek. He's Premier League proven if you like. >> He's he's a talent Muskovic and I think that you know we talk about it on Inside Spurs quite a bit. I don't think anyone would have liked to have seen him go but again if you can get 50 million for a player that actually had never played for us and I didn't want to let Kevin Danso go by the way. I actually really like Kevin Danso but line breaking passes. Van Heck was obviously a favorite for that. He's very good at that. Sessi on a free it's a no-brainer. So, and and of course deserve having the relationship with with Van Hecker as well, plus Van Deven and Vanha playing together internationally. You're hoping it's going to come good. Best thing we ever did was getting rid of Romero. >> Oh, without a doubt. >> Yeah. >> Just just quickly, what do you think are realistic positions for Spurs and United to finish at this season? Realistically, >> again, I don't know what's going to happen with Manchester United. Like, I don't want you don't want to talk up any manager getting sacked, right? But the United fans, I don't think are believing in Michael Carrick. And I think that >> I think they're not belie as because the board haven't believed in Carrick because they haven't invested in Carrick >> but they've been doing things gradually at United like last like the summer before last they were sorting out the front of the pitch. Obviously this one was more okay we're going to do the midfield and reinforce that a little bit and then are they doing it step by step so what next summer you're going to see a new defensive line obviously they brought in a goalkeeper as well in center lammonds they needed to do that much better than Anana. So, I don't I don't >> Well, if that's their transfer strategy, they get rid of him now. >> Oh, I think that is their strategy. You can see it. You can see that's >> I can see why if I'm a Man United fan, I'm looking at it and I'm thinking the board don't trust Michael Carrick fully. He's only been given a two-year contract. They haven't signed any defenders. We started with the same back four as we had four years ago. >> And it's awful. >> That speaks to me as like a halfhearted approach to a new manager. while there may be waiting for someone else to become available, won't be too um difficult to sack him in terms of the price. I I feel sorry for Michael Carrick because I've got a I support young English managers. >> Absolutely. >> And giving them time and giving them top jobs, I think it's great, but I think he's swimming with his hands behind his back. >> I I I get that notion, but at the same time, do you not think that the players could do more? Like there's always the buck is always going to stop with the manager, right? But when teams are getting outrun like Spurs are outrunning Manchester United, you should never be outrun. Yeah. Ever. And I think there's question marks over that and the personnel like Bruno Fernandez had a very poor game especially by his standards. Lots of arms in the air whatever. But Tielemans who they're singing you know the United fans were singing his praises in preseason hasn't looked anywhere near it. >> Carable he yeah he was he changed game when he came on for Manchester United. But >> I think you also have to look at the personnel as well. Not just blame Michael Carrick. Of course, Michael Carrick will be the one that is on the chopping block at the end of the day, but I think that I don't think the United fans necessarily believe in Carrick. They've gone from saying, "Oh, you know, we'd have won the league actually last season if we'd had Carrick all season, but there's a pattern. It's not just Carrick. It's not just Amarim. It's not every other manager that came before and maybe the board felt that they've been burned one too many times with managers just to give a shorter contract. I don't know. Not defending the board. They've been awful as well." >> Does Spurs finish above United come the end of the season? don't really like Spurs to say Spurs is going to finish above anyone to be honest with you. I my my personal target for Spurs has always been to finish in the top 10 and lots of people said with the money you've spent how can you say that because we finished 17th back to back. So anything that is on the first page I'll take >> I think that's reasonable. >> I think somewhere between sixth and eighth. I don't know where and obviously I don't know what's going >> Spurs will finish between sixth and eighth. >> I'm going to go probably more eighth. So >> you European football? >> Yeah. Of some kind. >> Wow. >> We'll be fine. I'm telling you we'll be fine. I know we'll be fine. >> You might be telling me I'm I'm disagreeing with you. >> You don't think we'll be fine? >> Absolutely. Oh, I don't What do you mean by fine? I don't think you'll finish in the European places. >> Where do you think we'll stop? Where do you think we finish? >> I think you should be thanking the football gods if you finish in the top 10. >> I think we Well, I think we will finish in top 10. I would I would say somewhere between sixth and eight. Yeah, we have a little bit on it. Do you think we'll finish by forest? >> Um, no. >> You don't think we will? >> No. >> How was your weekend? My weekend was terrible.
