"DON'T SAY IT PUBLICLY!" Alan Brazil & Dean Saunders SLAM Lisandro Martinez's 'apology' for comments
talkSPORT hosts and Mark Bosnich on Lisandro Martinez's apology: don't say it publicly, he may be engineering an exit
The video focuses on Lisandro Martinez's apology for his public comments. The panel argues he did not apologize for the criticism itself, only for making it public, while Mark Bosnich suspects a calculated attempt to force an exit. They also discuss Man United's recruitment, discipline, effort and manager pressure, concluding the issue should have stayed private and the manager should not be sacked yet unless the losing run continues.
- Martinez has not apologized for what he said, only for saying it on TV. — His apology is about the timing and setting, not the substance, so he is not withdrawing his criticism of the club.
- Martinez is effectively saying United's recent recruitment has not been good enough: £535m has been spent under Jason Wilcox, and £1.3bn over eight years has still produced wrong signings. — Judging by how those signings have worked out, some players are clearly not good enough, which is the point Martinez is trying to make.
- Concerns about signings should be raised privately with the manager and the bosses, not publicly. — If he could have a meeting yesterday, he could have asked a week earlier whether they would sign better players; going public only hurts the club.
- Without discipline and hard work you do not have a football club, and Martinez going public undermines control of the dressing room. — There are 35 millionaires in the dressing room; if you cannot control them, young players will copy such behavior. Fergie would never have tolerated it, as Teddy Sheringham said on the show the day before.
- Martinez knew exactly what he was doing and was being very cute, using public interviews to push for an exit or contract leverage. — He spoke in two interviews and touched on points most Man United fans agree with; he has one year left plus an extension option for both parties, and Argentine teammates like Romero when he wanted to leave Spurs and Enzo Fernandez have done similar things.
- Martinez should have sorted the issue behind closed doors instead of publicly embarrassing the club; he is being too clever. — In the old days players would have a few beers, talk it out and then reunite for the next game; going public now hurts the team.
- By aiming his anger at the hierarchy, Martinez shows this has been on his mind for some time and is putting out a signal: if you want to let me go, let me go now. — He is clearly unhappy, and this is not good for the club, especially at this moment.
- If I were the manager, I would play Martinez and ask him to make a true apology with a 10-out-of-10 performance. — He has said sorry, but the best way to make it up is to deliver on the pitch at the weekend.
- The worrying thing for Man United is that the old problem of not working hard and not running has returned. — They got rid of Anthony Martial, Sancho and Rashford and brought in two players who look really good, but the team is back to going through the motions, jogging and losing through lack of effort.
- United's main problem now is confidence, and this is their worst league start since 1986/87, making this the manager's biggest test since taking over; he should not be sacked now. — Although since he took over only Arsenal and Manchester City have taken more points, he must galvanize the dressing room and go back to basics, making the team hard to beat; but if they continue to lose, the powers that be may have no other option.

So Martinez has apologized for his words on Tuesday night and received a fine. On top of that, he said, "I met with the club's leadership and the manager. It was a very positive conversation where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday's game. Everyone knows that I'm a passionate person that I live football with great intensity. uh right the frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at the time and place that perhaps uh and that place was perhaps not the right time and right ones and for that I want to apologize to everyone it's an interesting one you know maybe if if he's saying he met with a hierarchy maybe maybe he might play against le United now maybe this thought okay he cares he shouldn't have said it but gone in prove it prove it Ellen road tough game we a game we can't lose >> yeah he's not apologized for what he said. He's apologized for saying it on TV. >> He's not apologized for the the old thing. Like Jason Wilcox, by the way, spent since he's been there, they've spent 535 million. Whether whether the players he's picked aren't good enough from from the looks of it, that's what Martinez is trying to say. [clears throat] >> So Jim Rackcliffe, I mean, they've spent 1.3 billion in the last eight years on players. They've got it wrong. some of the signings. >> Yeah. >> But he's not apologized there for what he said. He's apologized for saying it in public. So if he had a meeting yesterday, why didn't he have a meeting last week and say, "Are we going to sign some better players or what?" It's all you have to do. Are we going to start signing some better players? I'm telling you as a player, Mr. Rackliffe, that we haven't got a good enough squad to compete. We're going to start getting beat in games. We haven't got a good in good enough players. So, we need to sign some. >> But he's he's just hammer just hammered them in. what he's doing. He must he knows his contract's up and he he's probably said to the the hierarchy about my contract's up, you know, if I'm thinking, are we going to sign better players? Right. There's no point. There's there's no problem saying that to the manager or the bosses, but don't say it publicly. >> No. and and no matter cut through all the the new jargon in football and and tactics and different systems without discipline and hard work, you haven't got a football club. There's 35 millionaires, multi-millionaires in the dressing room. If you can't control them >> by actually Martinez coming out and speaking like that, before you know it, well, >> young center forwards doing it. >> That's why Fergie was so good. In fact, Teddy Sheringham just yesterday told us on the show that Fergie would never had had would never have put up with such behavior. Let's ask another of the former players, former Manchester United and Chelsea goalkeeper. A very good day to Mark Bosnich. Buzzy. Morning. >> Morning, Buzzy. >> Good morning, Alan. Good morning, Dino. How are you, mate? >> Very good. We're asking the wrong man here, Al. >> What? >> Buzzy, about discipline. >> Oh, here we go. >> We ask Hey, by the way, Al, I got to tell you, he got in the first team at Villa, right? >> Yeah. He's Nigel was the goalie. He's 19. Friday, I'm walking through Sutton Coldfield. Friday afternoon. >> Tap on the window out of a restaurant. I looked at I looked in. He's got the biggest cigar and a glass of red wine. Friday afternoon. Buzzy. >> He's only relaxing. [laughter] Was he? You're only relaxing, Buzzy. >> Isn't it funny as well? When I went back to Aston Villa, I was only 20, not 19 as well. Dino getting [laughter] for another year. >> Careful. Careful, Dino. Careful. Hey, my memory is >> No, Bos. Boss, what do you Well, I know what you're going to say because I know you as a character and uh you you can't be impressed by what he's done. Martinez. >> No, I'm not. But I I will say this. I look and if you just look at some of his international teammates, the pattern is quite clear, right? Christian Romero when he when you could tell he wanted to leave Spurs did something very similar in a different time. Enzo Fernandez another example. Well, I think he knew exactly what he was doing cuz he he said it basically in two interviews and where he's where he's been very very cute. He's actually touched on points that you know that it's majority of Manchester United fans actually think he's right about. So I I think he's been very cute with this. He's only got a year left on his contract. There is an option for for both parties on that contract to extend for another year. We don't know behind the scenes that maybe one or the other have said to either the club or the players, look, we're not we're not going to take up that option. >> Yeah. and and and he can always turn around and say heat of the moment, but that's just my opinion going off the pattern of some of his teammates in the Argentine national side. >> See, you mentioned Romero there. I didn't like him as a character, you know what I mean? You know, get sent off reckless knowing what he's doing when Tottenham were in trouble. Off he walked as if you know I I don't like that. And I I I understand like you bossy what he's saying, what United need. I do. >> Yeah. >> But this is why I think he's being very cute. In the olden days we go out in the olden days we go out and say let's sort this out we have a couple of beers chat it out and what's wrong and and get there get it off your chest if you're not if you're not giving me the right service why not why you not play well you're not making the right runs you you sort it out you clear it and then for like leads United coming up you go out there and you're all together again >> yeah well that's a that's a that's a good point but and he's he's really directed his anger towards the hierarchy which led me to believe what I just said before that this was this this was has been in his mind for some time and I think he's in my opinion the way he spoke uh he's obviously not a happy chappie and he's sort of basically putting it out there if you want to let me go let me go right now but it's not good for the club >> especially not at this moment in time um especially with the perception and also with the results and they got a massive game coming up this weekend against lead United away who have started the season really really well so it's it's a difficult one whether to play him or not there there would be some managers in the past who would definitely leave him out right at this moment in time. I'd be inclined if I was Michael Carrick to say, "Okay, well, you know, you've said what you've said. Now, you know what? You've apologized, but now go out and truly apologize and put in a 10 out of 10 performance on the weekend." Yeah. >> And let's and and make it up to everyone. >> Posy, I mean, the worrying thing for Man United is is these stats keep coming out about them not working hard, not running. Um, I thought I thought those days were gone. And they got rid of they've got rid of Anthony Martial Sancho. They got rid of Rashford. They've got rid and they got Kuna in and Embomo who who look like two really good players. >> But they've gone back to that once again. Going through the motions, jogging, walking, jogging >> and getting beat through effort. Well, there's different levels of effort as you both know, you know, in terms of I don't think players anywhere around the world go out and say, "Look, you know what? I'm not going to put no effort in whatsoever." But there's a difference between turning around and saying, you know, for just just for a little hypothetical example, you know, pass me that glass. If I give you that glass straight away there, that's 100% effort. If I just take my time and dillydally, then that's not quite the 100% effort that you're talking about. I think the main problem that they're suffering from now is from confidence and that comes from this is their worst league start I think since 198687 and it's going throughout the whole club and this is now where the manager really is facing his quite easily his biggest test since he's taken over. Let's not forget as well since he's taken over he's got the third most points out of any club in the league. Only Arsenal and Manchester City have got more points than him. So this is a real test for him to to galvanize that dressing room. Basically turn around and say what happens upstairs happens upstairs. We're here and we're here to make things work. And what we're going to do when things aren't going well for us and Dino you taught me this all those years ago. You go back to basics. Okay. This is we're going to make ourselves very very difficult to beat. Uh we're going to basically you talked about running and all that. We're going to go that extra yard not just for yourself but for your teammate as well. and we're going to be very very organized because they have got the quality of players that if they do keep clean sheets they have got the quality of players to score in terms of with very very few chances and then we'll start to build upon that they got a tough draw coming up if you have a look at the games I mean there's no easy game in the Premier League anyway >> but if you if you look at the games I mean even Ko in the Champions League that's a real banana skin so they've got to be very very careful because for all those people calling for Michael and I don't think they should sack him he hasn't even been there a year however Little caveat to that is if you continue to lose, I don't see the powers of be having no other option. >> Yeah. >> Buzzy, just briefly, I've got a break. Uh weekends are with us. What have you got on this weekend? Barbies, because you'll be warming up over there, won't you? >> Uh it is warming up at the Premier League. The Premier League will be taking uh front and center. Uh my little boy plays on a Sunday, so uh so so that will be busy as well, but the Premier League and the first game Everton versus Chelsea is on at 10:30 on Saturday night. >> Yeah. >> So we'll be watching that. And then uh uh you know waking up Sunday like I said I got to go take my little boy to football and then afternoon I'll come back and watch all the games and getting ready for the early Monday morning games. Specifically at midnight on Sunday night strike Monday morning Leedes versus Manchester tonight be a massive game for somebody massive game. >> Nice one Bosy have a great weekend. >> Nice to speak to you Mark. Cheers Mark. >> No problem. See you later. Great to speak to you Alan. See you later. Take care mate. >> Mark Bos there live from beautiful Sydney. Lovely. What a what a keeper he was. >> Oh yeah. >> Do you know his nickname was the freak? >> The freak. >> Yeah. He used to make freak saves. >> No. Well, you're on the pitch and remember playing at Sunderland one night and I thought two of the balls were in the net and he's and he's made unbelievable saves. Great goalkeeper. >> Ollie stretched and let go say sharp you two. Shut up you two. Right coming up. It all get it'll all get very spiky on white and Jordan. Yes. It it got very spiky. Me numpies as Simon and forest green owner Dale Vince. Nah, right away I knew this would happen. Went head to head and it wasn't pretty. You'll hear it next.
