Simon Jordan and Petit review Liverpool against Man City: squad gap, Barcola’s price and pressure on the manager

The show reviews Liverpool’s match against Man City. Petit says Liverpool are far below City, that the manager will come under quick pressure, and that Barcola was overpriced; Simon Jordan argues fees are set by the market and both player and manager need time. The red card was not the root cause of the outcome.

It's Jim White, Simon Jordan, and French World Cup winner Emanuel Petite. And we are live on Talk Sport. Also live on your TV, even Prime Video. Wherever you want to watch the show, you can do so on a daily basis between, of course, 10 and 1 weeks. We are with you during that time. A lot to get through. Emanuel heads heads to S Pancrass at um 11 at 12:00, 12:00 noon, and he'll be heading back over to Perry on Uristar. Before you go, we need to talk a whole bunch of things before you leave us. And on that fixture yesterday, it wasn't just all about Manchester City. The result, >> the headlines dominated uh City's performance, the three goals they scored, >> but Liverpool, where does it leave them, Emanuel? I know you've quite an affection for the football club, as you have for Manchester City and a number of English clubs, but Liverpool ninth with nine points after six games. sometime soon. Is Andon Eraola going to feel the heat? >> Well, I was not impressed at all with Liverpool yesterday. Um I know that they were missing important players too, but uh that's not an excuse. I think when you're a club like Liverpool, they try, you know, to put great energy the first 15 minutes and uh it almost worked. But uh did they have any chances, you know, to to win that game? Honestly, are they at the same level than City? No way. So so far away. I think they are missing some players as well. I think that they missed some players during the transfer market and then yes when you are Liverpool manager and you don't have the result you you you start to feel you know the pressure really soon. >> So yeah I think he's he could be in danger. Yeah >> I mean he could be in danger. >> Yeah >> I mean you you look at the value of some of the players your man Bradley Barka 125 million verts it's been well documented. I think this too much money on Barcola to be honest with you. 120 millions I will never put that price tag you know on the table >> for him. We all know that in France we know that he is a quality players he could be sometime great but uh he doesn't get you know the regularity you know during the game and I think uh he was good most of the time with Paris because of the whole team behind him. >> So did Liverpool in your view pay over the odds for >> Oh yeah definitely. Yeah. What's a more realistic price tag? >> I would probably spend somewhere some 60 70 maximum >> half of what they pay. >> Yes. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, that's my opinion. But, you know, it's becoming common now that English clubs, you know, are spending so much money on over 80 players. Simon, one thing Anfield is it's many things, but it's it's always regarded as a fortress. The pressure is on forayola, isn't it? because it's still to win a Premier League game at Anfield. >> Yeah, I mean he's a [clears throat] good manager. He'll find his way. I mean, I don't know. I've not watched enough of Liverpool to say if they're entertaining their fans because one of the things that last year got the fans offside was that they didn't like the way slot set the team up that they were more passive. They weren't imposing themselves on the opposition specifically at Anfield and Liverpool fans won't accept that. >> So, I don't know if Liverpool have been able to do that in the home games that they've had. I think they have to be honest with you. So, I think they'll get some passage of time there. I mean, what a player is worth is what someone's prepared to sell them for. We can all ruminate as to what player should be paid for. We know the marketplace is inflated. I never thought Jack Gutis was a£100 million footballer, but at the time, Aston Villa were clever enough to put a clause in his his contract. Man City were prepared to pay for it. Yeah. In this instance, Liverpool were prepared to pay what PSG were asking for. No one made them do it. They paid them. They've got expertise inside their building about what they think a player is and isn't. It doesn't matter what he's worth. The only time you ever hear what a player is worth is when they're not playing very well. So his job is to play well and then it becomes about something different rather than how much they paid for him. Right now he's been in the door for 5 minutes. So he's not been there a long period of time. Give the guy a little bit of adjustment period to get himself across it. If a good player is a good player, they adjust pretty quickly. So he'll adjust pretty quickly. Liverpool aren't functioning as a particularly coherent side at this moment in time because you can see from their points total. They're not the Liverpool side that they will want to be. But this guy Areola when he landed at Bournemouth, I know it's a different comparison, but there was a comparison. There was a scenario of Gary O'Neal being shuffled out the door. The first 10 games at Bournemouth did not go well for him at Bournemouth. It looked like they had made a mistake in getting rid of Gary pressure on Bonas. >> I know. I accept that. And so the definition is do Liverpool have the where they to stay with a decision that they made a considered decision. They had ample opportunity to reached in and got their old mate Alonzo back in. They didn't. They let Chelsea steal a March steal a march and they chose to go with this guy. So they've got to give him an opportunity. >> Yeah. >> To develop a side. And I'm not suggesting that Bournemouth is a blueprint because of course it's a significantly less pressurized environment at Bournemouth. They're grateful for good winds. Whereas Liverpool are expecting if you finish sixth at Bournemouth, it's an absolute wonder if you finish sixth at Liverpool. Yeah. It's >> a problem. Yeah. >> Emanuel, as Simon and I are often told, you and I are not football people, are we? Emanuel P is a World Cup winner and he's a football man. >> So they go down to 10 men. Grain Burch is sent off. >> Harsh, >> right? Harsh. But anyway, two yellows made a red and off he went. >> The fact of the matter is they were reduced to 10. >> Was Liverpool's performance after that red card acceptable? >> Yeah, it's already hard to play against City 11 against 11. So, you're missing a man is becoming even more difficult. So I was wonder I was thinking to myself at the half time even 11 against 11 I was really confident that city will win that game. So the sand enough has helped City you know to score very really soon afterwards. I think three or four minutes after the s enough. >> Yeah. >> So but it's not because of the same enough that City has won that game. I think they they would have won that game anyway. >> Yeah. I mean inola does he does he have to take any blame at all >> for how Liverpool went about it after they were reduced to 10. >> Can you just try to imagine yourself on the pitch you know and Liverpool player and you play against City. They are among probably the most beautiful team to when they get the possession of the ball. So good luck to get back the ball. I mean after one hour especially the first 30 minute when they they were giving so much energy on the on the pitch. >> Yeah. >> You need to get you know more energy you know to fight against 11 players on the pitch especially against City. >> Yeah. >> So I mean I tried to to put myself on the pitch and I'm thinking well what can we do? Can we put energy? Can we put pressure? Can we can we make them under pressure? It was really really difficult. >> Most of the time when it goes down to 10 men, it creates a massive advantage for the alternate for the opposition. >> Yeah. >> Now, if you're a good side already, then you will take advantage of that because there is a reason why it's difficult to play when you've only got 10 men. >> If you're not a particularly good side like Man United, >> then you will not take advantage of the fact that Tottenham went down to 10 men. In fact, you'll create your own outcomes. So, Man City are in no one no doubt in anyone's mind are a very, very good side. a handful when you've got a full quot of players. When you're down to 10 and it creates more space and you can move the ball around quickly the way Man City do and you got players like Dou, it is a massive problem. And once you've conceded one goal and you're trying to get yourself back in the game because you're playing at home, you are going to concede more because Manchester City are going to pick you off and pop it
