Kyle Walker BREAKS DOWN typical "day in the life" of a Manchester City player!
Kyle Walker breaks down a Manchester City player’s day and gives his views on City, Haaland, Pep and Tottenham
Kyle Walker tells the host how a Manchester City player’s day works, from the morning school run to breakfast and physio at the training ground, then training and going home. He says City’s success relies on support staff such as physios and chefs, that Haaland raised standards and has become a leader, and that Pep is extremely focused and intense; on Tottenham, he thinks their performances have been excellent but results have not matched them.
- Manchester City’s on-pitch success would not have happened without support staff such as physios and chefs — He says that when he looks at what the team achieved on the pitch, they could not have done it without the physios and their own chef
- Haaland raised Manchester City’s standards another level, especially around food and coffee — He says Haaland only eats good food, had salmon sent over from Norway, and even the coffee beans changed
- Haaland is a good guy, very self-assured and aware of his role, and is now a leader who shows it on the pitch — He occasionally goes back to the City training ground and judges this from seeing the players and from Haaland’s performances
- Pep Guardiola is extremely focused and intense most of the time and only relaxes a bit on days off — That is Walker’s impression from being around Guardiola; he says apart from days off Pep was very intense
- Being a Manchester City player is more like a well-paid hobby than a normal job — They use Walker’s description of the daily schedule to argue that the hours are comfortable and players are very lucky
- Tottenham have performed excellently all season and have not got the results they deserve — He thinks their overall performances have been very good and the results have not fully reflected them

You and I were just talking in the break there about how lucky I am in my world about this job, right? It's not it's not a job. I get up, play golf, take the dog for a walk, d come here, I'm with Benty five days a week, we have a coffee, we play darts, we come here, we took and we go home and they was saying like, you know, you you've got the same yours, even though you're a footballer, it's not really a job. No. Right. Can you And then I thought, I'm going to hold this back for our show so our listeners can hear. Can you just go through life as a Man City player so we're aware? So, what time would you would you set an alarm? >> Yeah, set an alarm. Uh, >> what time you getting up? quart 7 I get home. >> Okay. So, any reason why 7:15? >> Uh, I just get up, wake the kids up obviously to take them to school and everything else. Right. So, you take the kids to school. >> That was the one benefit that you know, obviously not playing for Burnley now. Playing for Burnley now. I I have to leave at like 8:00. >> I don't get to take them to school. So, at city I would drop them off at school. >> Okay. How long is that drive from your house to the city's training ground? >> Probably about 40 minutes cuz you're following the traffic into the city center. >> Are you picking any players up on the way? >> No, no, no. We didn't have a car school. Me and John sometimes used to >> Stones. >> Yeah, me and John Stones used to travel. >> Why you laughing? >> Cuz one time he picked me up in a Mini and we were traveling down the M uh M60 with or 56, sorry. In his Mini and the window were nearly coming off because it just couldn't go that far. >> Why is he driving that? Just for comedy value. >> Yeah, he loved collectible cars and he had a little mini. I think it I think it made paper me and John, but I was like holding the windscreen as he was driving. >> Mr. Bean. >> Yeah, it was rid It was ridiculous. We shouldn't have been in that car. Uh yeah. So you get to ground at what time? >> Uh quart 9. >> Okay. You wearing a tracksuit or you wearing what you wearing? >> Just normal clothes. What you want >> and then you get there and and you're seeing everyone where you going when you arrive at Man City's training ground. >> Walk through um walk into the change room. Your kit's all laid out for you and everything like that. >> Okay. >> What? What? Like training kit? >> Training kit. Training kit. Put your training kit on, your sliders on, go upstairs and have some breakfast. >> Okay. And this is a Michelin starred. >> It's unbelievable. The chefs there uh ridiculous. They're so good. >> Can you choose what you want? >> You know what city have that's actually like madness is you have like a French chef, a Spanish chef, and an English chef. >> Wow. >> So deter like obviously depending on where you're from, you would then go to or gravitate to that person which then cook your food for you. >> But you it's a bit like on the 14th floor. I don't know if you've been down there. I've never been in >> they got a vending machine for different uh >> could you could you go if you're English could you go at the Spanish chef? >> Yeah, of course. I'll have an omelette at that top. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Where would you go? >> Um there was someone called Chops. You had big sideburns. Bit similar. >> All right. >> Like your hairstyle a little bit. Uh >> so good hair. >> Great hair. >> Yeah, great hair. >> Thanks, man. You looked before you said it and then you thought you have got great hair. >> Yeah, great hair. You have >> I've got my own hair product about you wear that. >> No, I mean I always wear a cap. So, >> have you got Can I have a look? Have you got No, >> just a little. Just between me and you. >> No, it's between the world as well. I can see the cameras everywhere. >> They don't these cameras aren't on. They are. They are. >> What's going on up there? >> Uh everything >> or nothing? >> Nothing. >> Yeah. Do you have you know Jason Cunning just had uh >> I think I will go for it uh in the summer. >> Okay. Why won't you show me? You embarrassed about it? >> Clearly. >> All right. Did anyone have weird breakfast? >> Uh no. You just have eggs and omelets or scrambled or sometimes the chef do like the pancakes or whatever like that. Um and then it'd be downstairs to the physio room. I think everyone can probably back me up here. If you played football, everyone goes to the physio room in the morning and just >> How many physios you got >> there? I think they were like eight or nine >> or for like a little rub down >> again. But you would also be assigned to a certain physio. City was very lucky. We was very lucky and obviously we achieved a lot. But I think >> Yeah. Yeah. Forget all that. We don't care about that. >> No, but you look on the pitch and what we did on the pitch. We wouldn't have been able to do it without >> without the physio and our own chef. >> Yeah. >> What did Holland have? cuz he's got a weird he eats weird things and he >> you see the the game just stepped up when he signed. >> Okay. >> He started bringing salmon in from Norway and >> Well, he was >> well I don't think him personally, but he was getting it senting. >> He only he only makes or eats the good food and even the coffee beans changed. >> Am I having the wrong coffee? >> City have two baristas. That's how mad it is there. >> We've got one down on 14. >> On 14 a vending machine. >> I think we've got three. No, we got three baristas down. >> No way. >> Yeah. >> I've never been. >> They can't make coffee for love or money. There's three of them. >> There's There's three there. >> Yeah. You got your own bean. Why would beans make a difference? >> He wanted certain beans. >> Wow. >> Yeah. >> What's Harland like? I mean, I see him. He looks like a really fun lad. >> He's a good guy. He's a good guy. He's very obviously sure of himself and he he knows his role in the team, but I think now you can see from the outside looking in. Uh I go in occasionally cuz my son plays there. >> Oh, okay. You go. >> So I still go in and see the lads and you know he he's a leader now and I think he's showing that on the pitch. Is it a bit weird when is it like going back to school? >> They just Listen, I think that's one thing that City are fantastic with. They've just welcome me in like you don't. >> But you feel like an outsider >> a little bit now. It's tough, right? >> Yeah. A little bit now. I think before when my generation of the team was there still, you could still go in and have a bit of banter. >> Yeah. >> Now I think the team's completely changed. >> Do you think they go, "Oh, what's he doing, mate? >> Oh, what's he doing here again?" Maybe. Yeah. >> Yeah. Your time's gone, mate. Yeah. I probably would. You just say for the free coffee, are you? >> I'm just here for the free food. >> Right. So, go. So, you have your rub down. >> What time are we now? >> I don't know. Probably half past 9. >> Half past 94 to 10. And then there's normally a meeting uh with Pep >> with Pep around4 10 on what you're going to do for >> for training. >> For training or what he's going to implement on you that he thinks is going to win the game on >> the the pep that I see is always so focused. >> Yeah. >> Is there ever a pep that's mucking about and like giving you a little tickle or knocking you up? On days off, I think that's when he'll be a little bit more chilled out, >> but apart from that, he was so intense. >> You ever been to his house? >> I'd love to say I haven't, but have you? >> What was that for? >> He invited me around for a coffee. >> That's weird, isn't it? >> It was a little bit weird. >> Hold on. Is this story out there? Have I read that recently? Why did you go to his house for a coffee? I'm sure. Was it about the captaincy? >> No, that was the meal, >> right? Okay. >> Yeah. >> So, why are you going around his house for a coffee? >> I don't know. He invited me for a coffee. >> Did you go? >> Yeah, of course. Could not. >> You got to right. And were you expecting a conversation there? >> I was there for like I don't know a couple of hours, two hours. >> Nice house. >> Uh he had a flat in Manchester. >> Nice. >> Yeah. Lovely. Lovely. >> All right. Big >> big. Very big. >> All right. >> Yeah. >> Would if I walked into it, would I notice Peps? Is there pictures of him with like Barcelona and all that? >> I didn't really look around. >> Were you scared? >> Yeah, I was very scared. I a bit nervous. Yeah. >> How long were you there for? A couple of hours. Couple hours. >> And that was it. See you later, boss. >> Yeah, just good chat. >> What' you call him? >> Pep. >> Okay. >> Yeah, boss sometimes. But I think he preferred to be corp. >> Okay. And then so you you have your little meet with him. >> Yeah. >> And then what? So you haven't done anything yet? >> Still not done anything. Probably about half past 10. >> Fantastic. Is it? I woke up at quart 7. It's half 10 now. >> All with your mates. >> It's not even kicked a football, >> right? Then what? >> Then there'll probably be a bit of two touch when >> Okay. So then you go back on the training. >> No, then we're in the change room. So in the change room there was a little bin where you chuck your dirty kit in and me. >> Why? Why is it dirty the kit? You haven't done anything. >> No, I'm just saying. But we would play two touch over this bin. Right. >> So it would be like me, Riad, Ruben, Bernardo, and it get really spicy. >> But this is not part of training. This is just you ming about >> us as a warm up. But it was like good, you know, just to get the lads on board. >> The worst. >> We were like, oh, like you know, Jack, we love Jack, but if we were playing two touch, he would take three, >> right? >> Uh, I'd say Erling played once and he hit the back of his heel on uh on the locker. So we told him that he couldn't play again. >> Yeah. He went to control the ball and stood on the back of the locker. Smashed the locker. >> Yeah. Yeah. Cut all his heel. So we said like early you can't play anymore. >> So you sit down there. Yeah. You're too precious. >> Okay. >> So So now what time were you played kick the bin now? Where we at? >> Probably train at 11. >> So now you finally get onto the grass. >> Finally got to the grass. >> Okay. And >> how long you working hard for? >> Honestly, >> you folded your arms there. That tells me it's defensive. That's coming. I say I say an hour. >> Look at me. >> No, I say an hour. >> Uncross your arms. >> Okay. I say an hour. An hour. An hour and a half maximum. No more than that. Yeah. No more than that. >> And then you must be starving. Bit lunch. >> Back to food. Yeah. >> Back to food. Come in. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Uh then go home or do your ice baths, your s going home. >> I I used to get home for about 3:00. >> Oh, you must be knackered after that. >> Well, you don't start work till 1:00. We've just discussed you you Well, you enter your tube. Don't bring it back. Nothing to do with me. >> You went to your chew commute at 1:00 and then you own by 8. >> Yeah. Seven hours, mate. You're playing Don't kick the locker with your with Ernie Harland. >> It's a great job. It's a great job. >> It's not a job, is it? >> It's not a job. >> It's a uh a hobby. >> Yeah. It's a well- paid hobby. We're very lucky. You and I are very lucky. Very. >> Yeah. That's amaz. And that's five days a week. If you if you haven't got a midweek game, >> well, at six, you played a lot of games. So, it was probably every day you was in the training. >> Every day. Very. >> And do you ever do you ever say what are you doing after? Do you want to go out for a bite to do? Do you want to hang out? Do you want >> Sometimes we play golf uh golf. Sometimes we had, you know, a team dinner out. >> Okay. Did you ever go out with another player and his wife and your misses? The four of you. You ever go like, "Should we go have a bit of dinner?" >> Not very rarely. No. >> Did you do that? You didn't mix around players? >> No. No. >> So, what are you doing on sat on Saturday night? You playing? >> Yeah. >> Quite lonely life then, isn't it? >> Um, >> who are you best mates when you're playing? Who you hang out with? John Stones, Jack Gis. Me and Riad have a really good um Well, I thought we had a really good relationship, but he still not messaged me back when you asked me to FaceTime. So, I'm gonna I'm gonna He's not come back to you at all. >> No, he's not come back. It's a bit rude that What about if Pep If we >> If we phon No, I'm not going to ask you. >> If we phoned Pepswick up, >> I'd like to think so. Yeah. >> What about if we just phoned him? >> No, no, no. >> And just go, "Sorry, butt dial." >> No, you can't just call the boss for a bit of >> He's not your boss anymore. >> No, no, no. I ped. I couldn't. I promise you I couldn't. >> What would that would you be scared? You'd be scared, wouldn't you? Look at you. >> Yeah, I'd be nervous. >> I'd be nervous coming in. I'd be nervous coming in. >> That's nice. That's great. What a great insight that is. Um, we were meant to talk Tottenham there. >> Yeah, >> but we move we I just sacked it off. But should we talk Tottenham when we come back? Should we move best of sport? Should we took Spurs? Yeah. Spurs back. >> I think the performances have been class all season. I just don't think that they've got the results that they probably deserve.
