Liverpool and Man City fans clash: unresolved case makes the result feel hollow

The show takes calls from Liverpool and Man City fans after the sides met at Anfield, debating the red card, Liverpool’s attack and defence, Florian Wirtz’s place and Manchester City’s financial charges. The takeaway is that the match itself can be judged, but the unresolved case leaves the result and title race feeling meaningless, with fans and the Premier League all losing.

Let's go to uh Ben first. Liverpool fan. Uh Ben, what did you make of the performance? The red car, a lot to take away from that game at Anfield. >> Yeah. Hi lads. How you doing? Hope you're well. >> Um I I just like to say I actually thought Liverpool were actually considering who we had up front which was very lightweight. I thought Liverpool did very well in the game. >> Um considering how light lightweight they were up top. I mean Kumas like you say he he really tries hard but to me he looked a bit lightweight at times today which is understandable. He's just a young kid. we really missed that focal point. Um, I'd like to challenge the defensive comment you made about Liverpool because I actually thought for most of the game, City didn't really create too much if I'm honest with you. It was only when the red card happened that they uh they started to create. Did you not think that or >> No. Well, I I thought Semeno uh made two unbelievable chances which weren't taken. Remember they they flashed them across the six yard box in the first half. >> So I thought there was one of those in the first half. Yes, there was one of those. But a team like City, I don't think you can keep quiet for the full >> No, no, no. That's true. Yeah, they did. They did a decent job. I I'm I see what you're saying, but I just think long term throughout the season that that that back line doesn't really inspire me that you're going to have a back line that's going to be secure all year and win and win trophies. Um that worries me a little bit. >> Well, to be fair, I agree with that. I think the fullbacks that you alluded to is a bit of an issue. I mean the first caller who was sling a Rojo was abs I mean that's just >> I think they weren't watching the game. Yeah. >> No he wasn't and he he was actually really good but unfortunately going forward it's maybe where he doesn't really help out going forwards but defensively was solid. Um I just like to question the the first yellow card of grain birches. The uh the first yellow card is incredibly soft. >> I mean I don't know what you two thought of that but maybe the second one there's a bit of a case because there could be a counterattack but the first one is so soft. It's a difficult game to reference work was hostile. Tackles sort of were flying in. >> I thought he was going to say Gramming Batch because that's as best I've seen him months. Yeah. Like with the year that Liverpool won the league, he was absolutely outstanding. Yeah. >> And last year not so great, but looked back to his best. I think that's good news for Liverpool >> if you're a Liverpool fan. Uh Pods and again and I think he was right Ben to point this out. You look at how light they were up front. when you do get back Ekit and Issach and Gako and Sosai who we know is a goal scoring threat as well. >> Bos might be playing fullback by the way. >> He probably will be actually. It's not as thin. I mean there are some positives to take away from today's performance. If you can add those four into it. >> I I still think as I said to you before this this Liverpool team >> if they can sort out the back four they can win trophies. Um but the back four is the weakness. They got plenty of goals in that team. plenty and they'll create chance and they'll create goals and you know create chaos and the go the the home form which is always very very difficult although obviously they had a tough day today at Anfield. So the big question mark um for me um about the whole team a little bit is verts. >> Yeah that this is a problem that looks like it doesn't want to go away. Is this guy gonna stay in the team? Does he need to come out the team? Is that going to ruin his confidence? Um, do you stick by him? Um, because when they all come back, uh, for me at the moment, I don't think he warrants a place. >> Yeah, I'm surprised. >> You know, if you if you got Echert back, Gako, Isaac back, Bakola, um, Mallister is Has he shown any form to go in front of those guys? >> No, no, I completely agree. I I think you look at Liverpool's winning midfield. It was Graham Burch to Bosley Mallister and I think that should be the midfield he goes forward with. Um I think I think Vertz is a massive problem just because Liverpool spent so much money on him. If if Florian Verz was a 25 million pound player, it would have pulled him out from that side already. I think >> the fact he cost over 100 million I feel like it's almost forced to play. Oh, listen as a as a premiership manager, let me tell you, you are under pressure when you have big money signings that they, you know, there has been this investment and because of if they don't play there is like, well, the question then becomes about you. >> Yeah. >> Why aren't you getting the best out of him? This is a 100 million pound player, this is a 30 million pound player, it's a 50 million pound player, whatever that happens to be. The question mark then goes against your name. Um and you might not have been in the process or the ultimate process of him coming to the club if that makes sense. You might have been like okay this is available. Yeah. All the ball you know and everybody want all the recruitment team think he's the one. Um well obviously you're not going to say no. What are the other options? Well there is no other option. It's okay. So it might not be that you've cast your definite signature on this boy and then you got and you got to stand by him or you got to make him you got to make him improve. That is your job as football manager. Improve individuals and improve the team at the same process. >> 15 months at the club, no improvement for me on Florian Bert. All right, let's go uh to the phone lines. Anthony, Liverpool fan as well. Anthony, come. What did you make of uh today? Obviously City, we know there's a cloud over their heads, but still good performance from City. What about your side, Liverpool? How do you think they performed? >> Um I thought we were the best team um until the sending off. Um I thought you know you know look we we had no focal points up front. Kumas did his best and he had a few chances but the thing is um the thing I wanted to say around um the whole the whole atmosphere. So the atmosphere was hostile >> but and this isn't revisionism. I was at the game today and I was walking to the ground and I was walking out >> and I've never been to a game where it felt like it didn't matter. And I and I think one of the things you're going to find on your phone in, you know, next week, the week after with City when when teams play City is the whole thing felt a bit of a fa if I'm being quite honest with you. Um, you know, I I I've got no issues with how Liverpool played. I thought, you know, we did the best that we could in the circumstances. Um, I wasn't expecting us to win given the lineup and the injuries, etc. So it was a bit like a bit of a free hit, but the you know the whole the Premier League have to I know people talk about a process but this is ruining football. You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of you know when we had that super league thing in co and Liverpool played leads. I even joked at the time and it's like oh well does this result even matter? And that's what it feels like you know I I have no I just like I don't know what this means. I I I don't know what this means in the context of a title challenge, in the context of anything else. And the and the longer this goes on, loads of other football fans in the country going to wake up to the fact that this is just a fast >> Anthony. Listen, I think you now right on the head there of actually the British public are with this because um the um Man City fan we had on earlier saying that the the the pundits are making more of it and you know and stirring up the issue. I don't think we are. I think that the general fan is like, well, what what what is it then? What what's going to happen? >> And I looked at the betting actually. I thought to myself, well, I'll have a look at the betting. Is that being affected by what's going on at Man City to one to win the league? >> Um, so they're obviously uh hedging their bets as well. Everybody's like in this kind of where are we? Um, and Anti absolutely right. When you play Man City and they beat you and you're walking away from the stadium, what does it feel like? Well, he's just told us. >> Yeah, let's see if we can squeeze one more in before we go to the Let's call. Very, very good call. Let's go to Shen, the Man City fan. Um, Shen, it's it's it's a it's a weird scenario, isn't it? It's a weird space we are now in in the Premier League. Look, you were good today, Man City. I thought really good, especially in that sort of final 35 minutes, but we still have this We don't know what it means. We don't know what's going on. We don't know if this is going to count for anything come the end of the season. Yeah. No, that's I mean that's a fair point. Like obviously as we all know there's a process in place, but I mean I took a little bit of umbrage with what you said at the top of the show um to a previous caller Gary um and kind of taking the Mick out of his lack of humility. But ultimately, why should we have any humility at the moment? Like we're facing vitri over the past three weeks from media, fans, every every aspect of the footballing world, which I get. >> Yeah. >> But ultimately, everyone was already chomping at the bit. Everyone wanted Liverpool to win today. That's not what happened. So why shouldn't we revel in that a little bit? I mean, >> you know, you know what it is, Shane. You know, you know, I think the reason and look, you're right. And I would always sort of defer to fans of clubs because ultimately, you know, you're there. week in week out supported the club I'm guessing since you were kneeh high >> was a little bit euphoric by >> he was a bit a little euphoric and when he said it's 11 against 11 and I was like well it's not an equal playing field cuz that's what we're all here for here to have that debate and the rules have found out and the Premier League have charged them because like well it's not even it's not fair and I think that's the bit I was referring to >> fair fair enough and at the moment yeah that's ongoing and we're in the appeal process and we've obviously all waiting to see what happens with that and I as you've just said on the previous call we need that clarity as soon as we possibly can, but obviously these things take time. >> Now, but ultimately the club has doubled down as much as they possibly can. Now, how would you feel if actually when it go through the appeal process, City are found innocent? Do you think we would actually have the same level of humility from the media? Do you think everyone will be lining up to apologize? Cuz I certainly don't. >> No, you're right there. >> 100%. No, they they wouldn't. And I I agree with you on that point. So, so we we so we're damned we're damned if we're if we don't and we're damned if we do. >> I answered your bit there, Shen. Answer my bit. How would you feel if you are found guilty? >> Well, I mean, ultimately, I wouldn't really care. And I know that sounds a bit mad to say, but everyone's like using the this false equivalent of Lance Armstrong or whatever. We've got people online, certain uh media personalities saying this is the worst footballing scandal that's ever happened. It's not. Money's always been involved in football. I mean, if you go way back, way way back, you've got uh the birth of football when it was supposed to be amateur. You had people playing payers to be bakers to actually play on the pitch. Like, money has always been the name of the game. >> You're right. But, you know, there are clubs there are clubs out there. I mean, if you were to say this to Villa fans, Villa fans right now are in the same position as you. They got massive rich owners. They can't spend the money. They've had to sell six of their best players. They've had to sell six of their best players and can't spend the money. Newcastle fans are richer owners than you can't spend the money about to sell seven of their best players about to leave because they can't spend the money. It's unfair on their clubs. Whereas City has spent the money. You spent 350 million in the summer. Other clubs aren't able to do it because they've played fair. And I think that's the difference. But great call as well. >> What about Douku's goal? >> Wow. >> What a guy. I've >> seen him do that before as well. You know when you know someone's going to do something and you still can't stop it. Yeah. And you know why why it's such a great goal is because when he jinx he jinks he jinx he jinks. When he pushes that ball to the right, it doesn't go one foot. It goes exactly a yard and a half, which gives him time to get himself set and hit the shot. Technically, it was a great goal. >> Yeah. Do you think he'll start complaining about not getting more minutes? >> Uh he got Listen, they got they got plenty of games. They'll be right. You're right. There's 60 games. They'll go deep in every single competition. So, you're right. He'll get his minutes. We are going to go back to the phone lines. Before we do that though, let let's hear from Man City boss Enzo Moresca. He was asked if all the noise around the club is affecting the players. >> No, my absolutely. You cannot imagine how happy I am. I don't care about uh I'm here to try to prepare the games and win games. So, I don't care about uh uh I said many times hopefully I can speak about this situation when we going to win the appeal. I said during the week uh we need to learn how to deal with the outside noise because of the situation and the noise will be always there. So we need to learn how to deal with that but at the same time we need to try to make uh our noise that is win games like we have done today because at the end of the game I think uh our fans they were sinking so the noise was from us and not from uh the environment. I'm feel away it's great result for sure. I think in this moment all the all the organization needs to win needs this kind of win like today. So it's good for for us as a coaching staff is good for the players is good for the fans is good for the organization. I think uh again this kind of win is good for for all the all the club. >> Very quickly PS before I go back to the phone lines um what would you make of me as a manager like are we looking at a potential top tier manager? I mean, six from six did okay at Chelsea as well. >> Yeah, I mean um obviously they they fought very very highly of him because it looked like um there was strong maneuver for him to get him at Man City to replace Pep. Interesting to see what his contract says. I wonder all those charges whether there is some sort of clause in there that deducts his pay. It doesn't sound like it does. Um he can be very bullish. >> Yeah, >> of course he can. uh when you get a great result like that and the deny the deny process carries on um and it will do I'm sure until that appeal is heard and uh of course they're going to stand by their club as and they're contracted to do that by the way. >> Yeah, so far so good. Six from six scored a lot of goals as well. Only only Brighton have scored more than Man City so far this season. 15 goals for the Blues. All right, let's go to the phone lines again. Gavin, Liverpool fan has got in touch. Gavin. Um, what? Two hours removed now from the game. What are your thoughts now? Now that you calmed down a little bit, what are your thoughts? >> There you go. It's a great show. Uh, very interesting. I think there's two things going on today. There's a game of football >> and there is a pantomime. And I think the um I think the City fans behave pretty well to be honest. I think you're all very uh in good humor, in good spirit. The energy outside the ground before the game was unlike anything I've seen outside of a sort of Champions League last eight game. >> Wow. uh all in good spirits. I didn't see any issues that I was in the upper Anfield Road end and uh had the City fans not fly in front of us and you know they were boisterous. Of course they were and so were the Liverpool fans but there was no you know no negative energy if you will. >> Yeah. >> It was in good taste Alan. Yeah. And you know it should be and that's the best thing because actually until the Graenber uh Red I think the game was pretty even and I thought we played well with no recognized strikers and you know that's not City's fault. the game of football. I think they won it and when well done City I think they won the game fair and square the red card unfortunately changed the game for us but that that's not me calling it to be a bitter red at all. I thought congratulations to them on the field. Then there's the second bit which I think all of us were scratching our heads with including a couple we were talking to and he was a City fan and she was a Liverpool fan. You know it's it's what does it mean? Yes, I think that's it's important to recognize that none of us really know. But the narrative that uh you know if the appeal's successful, if we're found guilty, I think we need to remember there's eight years of investigation and two years of judicial investigation by I guess the great and the good in that world. Um they are guilty. They've been found guilty by a a panel of their peers. And we're talking about the appeal in a way that I think is unreasonable. And what I mean by that is the appeal will be three people and we'll re we'll hear whether or not I guess the uh the rules that dictate what the committee found were wrong, not a rehearing. So I and look, I I don't want to get into that too much. I know you guys must be exhausted by this, but what I would say, and this is one of my key points, I think the city fans are the ones who will dictate whether this gets dealt with quickly or not. And why I think that is that the Manchester City ownership and leadership have shown that they'll do whatever it takes to drag this out legally to attempt to overturn a verdict which to my mind be pretty impossible to overturn. Now, but what that means is this could go on through an appeal, through taking on FP, going to high court. None of us really know how long, but I can assure you it won't be before Christmas. And I think that's tragedy if the city fans stand up one day and say, "You know what? Enough's enough. I can't keep going to grounds listening to this because I saw that with Mo and I today the training staff the subs on the bench them first 20 minutes their heads were not in it and had Liverpool scored three goals in the first 20 minutes Christ knows what would have happened and it didn't but I think not every ground is going to be like this not every ground they will win at and I don't think outside of Manchester City and Liverpool the English game is winning right now I think it's it's it's not good enough that the Premier League has not sanctioned yet but I imagine There's a real reason for it and it will be a legal reason, but there's no one winning here. City fans aren't winning. Liverpool fans aren't winning and the Premier League aren't. >> So, >> you know, you got to remember that the Premier League is the biggest product in uh in this country, you know, in terms of uh export, you know, financially. We need it to be a success. I mean, we've got enough problems in this country without the Premier League suddenly having a massive problem, which it has at the moment. the the process that we're going through uh is a process of an appeal which we know who's to say that when that appeal is sat and let's just say for example let's just hypothetically say they get found guilty that the punishment then is dished out and they appeal against the punishment. >> Yeah. >> So we could be going on and on and on uh because I wouldn't I always suspect that could happen. I do feel though we do need to m
