"PUT THE PAST BEHIND YOU!" Ashley Young URGES Man Utd players to MOVE ON from poor performances!
Ashley Young urges Manchester United to put the past behind them and perform at Atletico Madrid
The show looks at Manchester United's mood, pressure and tactics before their Champions League away game at Atletico Madrid, with Ashley Young saying they must forget their poor start, focus inside the dressing room and use counter-attacking chances. It also covers Bruno Fernandes sharing responsibility with his team-mates, plus Aston Villa's adaptation under Unai Emery and the patience of their fans.
- He does not feel external pressure; the pressure comes more from the club's own expectations — He knows the standards expected and has experienced ups and downs, so he does not measure himself by outside noise
- Manchester United's players must put the past behind them and focus on their performance at Atletico Madrid — The previous games cannot be changed, Carrick trusts the players, and a Champions League away night is a chance to show what Manchester United are about
- Manchester United are stuck between counter-attacking and possession football, but tonight suits them as a counter-attacking side — Last season they looked more like a counter-attacking team; this season they are less clear against teams with more possession, and Atletico Madrid pushing players forward will leave space
- Playing away may actually suit Manchester United better, and Old Trafford would be a harder game — Away noise and expectations are different, backs-to-the-wall football can unite the team, and Atletico Madrid pushing up can be exploited on the counter, though the game is still very tough
- This may not be the time for Fernandes to stand up alone; it may be the time for everyone else to stand up — Fernandes was outstanding last season and all the focus goes on him, so the team cannot rely only on him
- Fernandes will take responsibility and galvanise the team; if he plays well, Manchester United play well — He is the captain and leader, produces assists and goals, and the Champions League stage will drive him to prove he is world-class while pushing others to reach his level
- Manchester United must survive the first 15 minutes against Atletico Madrid without conceding, then chances will come and must be taken — Atletico Madrid will throw everything at them early, but if United do not concede and do the right things, counter-attacking opportunities will appear
- Aston Villa need time and can get out of their difficult start — Losing so many players at once and embedding new signings into Unai Emery's system takes time; the international break helps, and last season they also started slowly before finishing strongly
- Aston Villa fans are patient for now, but that patience will not last forever — Recent success and the respect for the manager have kept the mood calm, but there were some grumblings after they led Brentford 2-1 and conceded quickly

Manchester United's last away win the Champions League believe it or not was nearly 5 years ago and get this here's a lovely wee stat Carrick was in charge then and they beat Villarreal that day tonight they face Atletico Madrid live in TalkSport in a week which could prove pivotal in Carrick and United's future moving on Michael was asked in his press conference if he feeling the pressure. It kind of depends on how you define pressure to be honest I think there's a there's our own expectation you know we we know what we want what we're capable of doing as a team what we expect as a group and as a football club and that comes from us. I certainly don't look outside or elsewhere what it should look like, I know fine well exactly what it should look like. I've felt the ups and the downs and so I don't feel a pressure from that at all it's just wanting to succeed and we want to win and we want to be part of something successful so that's the one of Sean's dressing it was a very very good morning to Ashley Young Ashley good morning mate Good morning both of you Youngie how you going mate I'm good are you Yeah I'm good thanks mate The first thing I'm asking you never mind the football have you wished I definitely have, and you might hear a little voice note later. Oh, lovely. 40 years young. He's never been 40. He looks older than that. Well, I did say that. I mentioned it earlier, actually. I reckon he's got a 52 year old head so I think exactly he definitely has oh it's for sure I know you're working at the game tonight United I only watched the highlights of the weekend yeah I've got the stats in front of I mean, I think it's their worst league start in 40 years, six points from six. They're clearly not firing on all cylinders. I mean, the difficult question is, well, I'm going to ask you, what's going wrong at the moment well you you can look at running the stats you can look at you know not scoring you can look at conceding goals it's there's a lot of things that are not right right now but i think if If you look at the way that Michael Carrick is, and the Gaffa Daishi will be able to tell you. It's about what's going on inside the dressing room, and he's confident in the players to go out and produce and perform and you know when you've got games like tonight coming up uh you just got to put the past behind you the games that have been that you can't change you can't do nothing about them now so um it's about going out and putting on a performance when you go to a stadium like Atletico Madrid and you're playing in the Champions League. You worked so hard last season. You don't want to just go out with a wimp. You want to go out and put on a performance to show people, do you know what? This is what Manchester United are about and it's the same as like I say, Dasha will be saying the same thing as when he was a manager that outside noise, forget the outside noise, just worry about what's going on at that dressing room and go and turn it into wins on the pitch and like you say it's been a disappointing start but it's a massive week now where you play a flat car away and you go to Leeds at the weekend. I'm just looking at the game tonight well listen I don't know if you heard with Rio on and he wasn't sure he said effectively actually what United were whether they're a possession side a counter-attacking side where do you see them? Sean and I were talking as if they're maybe stuck somewhere in between at the moment you know I think that's that's the thing that last season you would you would say you look at Manchester United and you'd be like that they were a counter-attacking team they plan to counter-attack in many games and I think this season if they've come up against teams where they've had had a lot more possession and they're stuck in between whether they're still playing counter-attack or they're playing more and more possession. But I think that tonight will be ideal for them. The way the Athletico play, you know, the amount of players they push forward if there's pace in that team tonight and they play in the right way and at the right moments they use the ball well there's going to be opportunities for them because Atletico like I say they want to play forward they want to get players forward man United can counter attack and hurt Atletico It's a fair point I think because I I think going away is their favourable thing. I think it's a really tough game. I think we both made well, all three of us made that clear. But going away, you know, when Youngie talked about the noise days, right? You know, I talked about it a lot when I was at Everton. You know, you can't deal with all the noise outside. What you can deal with is what's right in front of you. So I think that is their thing to aim for, is going there and going, right, it's away. The noise is a different noise. The expectation is different as well. Weirdly, Ali, this sounds mad, but at Old Trafford would have strangely been a harder game. No, I get it. I understand that. The environment. Yeah, yeah, exactly that. Whereas at least by going away its backs to the wall, everyone digging in. Well, if it works out for them, everyone digging in and it probably will suit the idea of, because they will push you back out there to go, but then you can counter against that and break. So it may play in terms. I still think it's a really tough game. I'm not going against what we said earlier, but I think there is a chance they could use it to their advantage if they play wisely. Actually, I was on with Andy T yesterday, Andy Townsend, we're having a crack about Lanchester United and we're kind of making the comment, you know, it's times like this that they need people at their starts to turn up and Bruno got to mention, Bruno Fernandes and then I'm thinking to myself, do you know something? It might be the opposite because I thought Fernandes has been absolutely outstanding last year. I'm thinking to myself, it doesn't mean time for Fernandes to stand up, it may be the time for everybody else to stand up. Yeah, do you know what? It is that way because of the way Bruno Fernandes has been, because of what he's done for the club, because of what he keeps on producing, everything's going to be put on him. He's the captain he's the leader you want your players to go out there and I've always said that if Bruno Fernandes is playing well Manchester United will play well if he's higher up he produces assists, goals wherever it may be and when you're on a stage of a Champions League, Bruno Fernandes is going to be looking at himself and saying do you know what if I step up this is me to show everybody I'm a world-class football player but then everyone else will then be galvanised and be like well we need to get to that level we want to to be as good as Bruno Fernandes and show, do you know what? If we're all doing the right things, we'll go out there and there's an opportunity for us to win this game. Like I said, Atletico, it's not going to be easy. It's going to be tough. But as long as you stay in this game, because them first 10-15 minutes, Atletico are going to put everything into it. As long as you don't concede, as long as you do the right things, there's going to be chances. But when those chances come, it's then that you've got to take Ashley where are you With the Villa At the moment Do you see You were at the game At the weekend Yeah yeah Villa Brentford Yeah Where are you With Villa At the moment I mean obviously Lost a heck of A lot of players And spying their team Effectively And new faces coming in Yeah, that's what it's been For me, when you lose so many players all at once and you're starting again and embedding new players into the system that Unai Emery wants to play it's going to take time it's going to be tough but it's getting the work done you've had a big free week in national break for Unai Emery to make sure them players know what style of play he wants to wants to play and it's it was tough last season they started didn't start the greatest last season but managed to finish the way they did and you know we've we've obviously um the european football they've got now as well. It's fantastic for the club. It's one of the things that, you know, the new players have to now show what they're about, show the style of play that Uno wants to play and the old players have to really show them players this and this is the way that we've been playing, this is what we've been doing and we now need to get some points on the board. It's been tough, it's been a tough start but I'm confident they'll be able to get themselves out of it i'll give them credit you know i was at villa park and i was asked by talks what afterwards you know back in the studio what what it felt like i think there is a tolerance there because of the years the last few years of success and that's brilliant from fans because it's not easy you know the expectation grows every year but I do get the feeling there has been a bit of tolerance because they weren't I mean there's a few grommels at the end because they were 2-1 up they concede quickly you know they could have seen the game through but I just think even the fans sometimes it's It's good they can see the... Acceptance and acceptance. Yeah, and the manager's calm, you know? And I think, I mean, the manager's built a lot of respect there, of course, but there's a calmness there. I don't think anyone's... It's not that they're not worried. Of course, they'd have wanted to start better, but, you know, there's a calmness in the stadium and I thought fair play to the fans. You know, there's a lot going on at the club as well. The North stands getting ripped down and all that. So, you know, I thought fair play. Now, I know that doesn't last forever. I'm well aware of that. But Lisa just taking a breath in it, looking as young you said, getting new players in, trying to mould it. Got these big games as well. Champions League. So, you know, I think there was an awareness from the fans where they were and where they've come to. Yeah, exactly. Oh, it is nowadays. It is nowadays. And Young here, just quickly, he made his debut with me as a player at Watford and then I managed him at the end of his career, I managed that. Or near the end of his career. He used to kick me for fun as well in training. That's what I'm going to say. Sales demanding. Started your career. Started your career and finished it, mate. Yeah, exactly. I don't know whether to thank him or what. Listen, mate, enjoy the game tonight. A couple of tough ones. Obviously, I'll let you go Madrid then, Leeds at the weekend. But thanks very much for joining us. This morning, Ashley. And enjoy the game, my friend. Yes, mate. Thank you. 9 .15, we're going to take a short
