Hit or miss: ranking every Manchester United signing under INEOS, plus the fallout from Martinez questioning the squad

The show first debates the fallout from Martinez saying United's squad is not Champions League quality, with the guests split on whether a player should air that publicly. It then ranks United's signings since INEOS took charge, judging each as a hit or miss, with many questioned over injuries, positional fit and value, while a few are backed for potential or on-pitch impact.

Sam, there is only one place to start and that is by talking about Manchester United. It's not been the best week for the club, of course, after they drew it home to 10-man Spurs. That was followed by a defeat to Atletico in the Champions League. And after that defeat, there were some interesting comments made, wasn't there, by Landro Martinez. Uh he said, for those that were unaware of his comments that this is not a Champions League quality squad. I think the players can do more, but it's also important to build a strong squad to be ready for these kind of nights. I expect more from our technical director, I have to be honest. Now, following that, he then released a statement on his social media explaining the interview. He since met with Michael Carrick and the Man United leadership team, we believe, and has been fined by the club for those comment and apologize. So, lot going on and he got picked up, went fairly vile. So, what do you make of the situation, Cams? >> I mean, I agree with every single word. I mean, I don't see how any Manchester United fan or anyone involved with the club can can disagree. You you think about the summer and I think everybody walked into this season a little bit underwhelmed. Yes, we needed to address the midfield area, but we knew we needed other players around and you look at Manchester United game against Athletic, you think to ourselves, you're going against Komos, you think you're going to be playing Bayern and stuff. We're we're not good enough. We're not good enough to compete and you see what we're doing in the league. I feel there's far too much attention on the player. Oh, why is Martinez talking? He got ragdoled by Dominic Saleni. I don't think that's the point. And if it's like he can't talk, then who can? Cuz if you're saying Bruno Fernandez is the only person at the club that can speak, he hasn't started the season well either. So, I think there's too much shooting the messenger right now. Think about what he's actually saying and how can you really disagree with what he's saying. I just don't see how I can. >> Doug, let's get your thoughts cuz that was a lot of Man United fans. It caused a bit of a split opinion this didn't because you're agreeing that's what you think about what he said but I think there was a surprise element from a player >> coming out with those comments so soon after game. So what what did you make from a neutral perspective? >> I thought it was pretty punchy to say the least in mid-occtober. you know, the season's only just got going and I think Man United have underperformed on the pitch. And I think if you look at, you know, their summer business, I don't think anyone would say it was the perfect summer, but which club in the Premier League did have a perfect summer, you know, you look at Liverpool, their depth in midfield, they don't have a right winger. You look at Chelsea, their depth in midfield, not signing Lamin Cameron on the final day, losing Enzo Fernandez. And these clubs just seem to be able to get on with it. Whereas Man United, what one win in the league so far, already 12 points off the top in mid-occtober. I don't think the players have played nearly as well. I think only probably Kobe Mayu and Brian and Bumo are anywhere close to their best form as it stands right now. But yeah, I do understand the frustration from a Man United player. I think he probably realizes that, you know, with his contract situation, he might not be at the club for too many more seasons. He's probably the best person to speak and he's always been very vocal in terms of issues in Argentina and at previous clubs as well. Um, so he is the right person in terms of that dressing room to potentially take this forward to the club. But I just think it's fairly unhelpful in a situation where Man United just don't need any more noise to just create a bigger storm around it. >> I'm kind of surprised that people think that he's not sharing the opinions of the guys in the dressing room, though. There's no way that other players in the dressing don't think that. There's no way Bruno Fernandez and these guys don't think that this team needs more help to go and, you know, try and compete cuz the season's pretty much gone. We're out of the Carabal Cup already. You know, we're 12 points off the top of tape. Not saying that we're going to win it, but we're already out of that equation. Not even we can't even dream. We can't even like think what if. I I think the players share that and I was just disappointed to see how much the media were attacking the player because the media control all these narratives. The media are the ones that if they want to talk about Inos, they can. If they want to talk about the Glazes, they can. If they want to talk about every player they can, but a player that's in and amongst it every single day in them change rooms in the in at Carrington isn't allowed to say something. They're silenced. And then I'm seeing players that like Rooney, listen, I I love Rooney. That's that's one of my favorite players of all time. But you handed in a transfer request when when you when we weren't signing players. When Ronaldo and Tez left the club, you handed in a transfer request. You know what I mean? So like when I'm seeing this type of I think it's a bit it's a bit hypocritical for me you know >> and Magguire Mure Shaw did say something at the start of the season about you know bringing in players for competition knowing that they're going to play in the Champions League. Obviously it was at the start of the season as well. So it is interesting to see how split the fan base is on it. >> Yeah I think there's just I saw some you know prominent people talk about the impact it would have on the players that did arrive in the summer. I thought that was quite an interesting point. You know Andre Santos and Carlos Balaba they're only 22. They're taking a big step up. I mean Andre Santis was of course at Chelsea beat barely played there. He's hoping to get more minutes. You know Carlos Bel this is the big move of his career. Yuri Tielemans was asked about those comments post game and he just said no comment effectively. I wonder I mean Cams might well be right. I'm not inside the dressing room about whether everyone's on board with it but it definitely didn't felt like Yuri Tielemans was necessarily on board with it. I think it is slightly offensive to the players they brought in this summer. Um and I don't think any club in the Premier League had the perfect window. So at this stage of the season when there's months to go till January when your form personally as Landre Martinez and as a team is so poor I just thought it was a bit of an unnecessary distraction. >> Interesting. Well, it did get a lot of people talking and a lot of people it did split opinion as you can tell by both of our guests have a slight disagreement of opinion. So it gave us a little thinking got a thinking caps on didn't it? We gam a task Sam I'm looking forward to this. >> Yeah. So he's got the tough task of ranking Manchester United since Inos took charge which was back in February 2024. He's going to go through each signing in chronological order and obviously as the United fan you've got the the big task but do you can get involved. We want to know whether you think the signings are hits or miss. So let's start with the first signing which is Joshua Zeri >> 36.5 million from Bologna. I think at the time, you know, the price and what he had done at Bologna, I thought that was like, you know, a good signing. But you look at the type of player that Xerxy is, these type of like more like laidback kind of like technical kind of forwards have never really, not saying May haven't had technical forwards, but his kind of like laidbackness and like you know, the calmness that he plays with, it's never really been a thing at Maya. We like blood and thunder and like fast wingers and high paced energy and I just don't think it's really worked out for him. I do actually think that he is sometimes deserves minutes and I think sometimes some of his cameos have been pretty decent. He links up, brings guys into the game, but I just don't think he's ever really nailed down that spot and I was surprised that he actually stayed this summer. So, yeah, I've got him as a miss unfortunately. >> There was a lot of noise around him in the transfer window. Do Do you think he he's got a good run of games to show what he's really worth at United? >> No, I don't think that's ever really been the case at Man United. And even at the start of this season with Benjamin Shesho not playing at all, he's barely come off the bench and really even had a start. Uh and Kuna has been playing there or Bumo sometimes played there. Slightly out of position as well. I feel slightly sorry for him, but I think he will carve out a decent career somewhere, but just probably not at Man United. >> Okay, next up, Lenny Yuro. Uh huge signing at the time, most expensive player in history, age 18 or younger when they signed him. 58.9 million from Leil. Massive excitement when he came to United. >> Thanks for Real Madrid as well. Yeah, I mean this one is so hard to judge as well. This one's hard because >> you're looking at like potential. Can he go on to be a really good player? You you you'd hope so, right? But again, it's one of them ones where he hasn't been able to nail down a spot in which I think the team are really struggling in the center back. We're really struggling there. We're still playing the same back four from 2022 as everybody likes to remind us about. So, you would think this signing is one of them ones where it's like, okay, he's going to be the future. He's the present and the future and it hasn't quite worked for him there. But what I would say, which is why I'm going to put him as a hit because of his potential. But not only that, because I do think sometimes our managers get in a little bit of like survival mode in is what I call it. Amarim and Carrick where it's like they look at Meguire, they look at Martinez and they would rather their six five out six or five out of tens every single week instead of gambling on a young player who maybe he gives you a two out of 10 one week but he might give you an eight out of 10 the next one. I don't think either manager have been brave enough to try play a young player back there for long enough and I don't think that's necessarily his fault. So I'm still going to put him as a hit for now cuz I think he'll still be part of Man United for the next few years. So >> Okay. And he looked really good for France in the international break. So >> there we go. Stick him up. >> Difficult. Who's next then? >> Help me out. Sam, you go with the next one. I'll stick this up. There we go. They did it eventually. >> Who's the next player? >> Mazari is it? >> Yeahi. >> Mazawi. You know what? For price tag, >> I think it was 17 million. >> 17.1 mil. Yeah. From >> He's been versatile. He's played left back. He's played right back. He's also played right center back. He's played left center back. He's just kind of been like a utility man for United. um don't think he's necessarily good enough to be a Man United starter week in week out, but I think for 17 million, all you want guys to be is serviceable, right? And I think he's at least been that. And I didn't when we signed him, I wasn't expecting the best right back in the Premier League or the best left back in the Premier League. So, I think for what it's worth, he's done he's he's done his job. >> Okay. So, you're putting him as a >> I'll put him as a hit. >> A hit. Okay. >> Nice. Okay. next next player is a bit he split he splits the fan base cuz he's obviously injured at the moment but when he does play he's he's very key for United >> far too many injuries just far just way too many injuries and again going back to that like he should be a big part of why our back four is not the same since 2022 he should like no disrespect to Harry Magguire because he's actually came in and done some good things sometimes but we shouldn't be talking about Harry Harry Mcguire anymore because we should be having Matteas still and I think he's left that open for Man United to still have to go into the market and have a center back rebuild. So for me, yes, he had a good little phase before he got injured last season, but I look at him and I think you've just missed too many games and still to this day I don't know when he's he's fully coming back and then it's mysterious injuries sometimes back injury gone for nearly a year too many for me. So >> that's been Diane on Delict. I think it's an interesting talking point because his commanded transfer fees have totaled around £178 million. Huge. I remember watching him for Ajax against Tottenham. He was one of the most highly rated young a long time ago this now center backs in world football. He's played for you know huge clubs. U Bayern Man United. Where do you stand on Delict and how important he is going to be for Man United? I think when I when I think about that Ajax team of 201819 when they reached the semi-finals him and Frankie Dong felt like they were going to dominate football for the next seven eight years but here we are this far down the line and Frankie Dong and Matasik mainly due to injuries I think it's fair to say have probably not hit the heights expected of them and Frankie Dong is now sort of fifth sixth choice in a really stacked Barcelona midfield. Dict I think would be a guaranteed starter for Man United but he just can't get a run of games together. So it's slightly frustrating given the talent that they had. Uh but I think I think given the caliber of some of these signings, I'd have him closer to hit for me because I think when he has been fit, he has made a big difference. >> Okay, Cam, it's your >> I'm going to go miss. Too many games out. >> Okay, let us know what you think of that. The licked in the mix. >> I like him, but too many games out. >> Next player, another player that's out injured, Manuel Gate, >> 2.7 mil from PSG. Currently out injured with ACL. >> Long-term injury. Yeah, I think this is a this is a stonewall miss for me. Um, I just don't think he's I don't think he was ever good enough to to to play for Man United. And you know, when he did play, there was just so many limitations in his game that just wasn't allowing us to like build out properly. You listen to what Lewis Enrique said about him at PSG. Pretty much said, I can't can't play football with Manuel Gart in there. And we went and gave 50 million for him. So, when I look at it, I just think yes, honest player, gets about, but I just don't think he's good enough. And now that he's got an injury, pretty much going to be out for the season. And I thought he was going to go this summer. Actually, I was looking at him and thinking, "Oh, we're gonna get some maybe 30 million, 25 millions out of him and he's still here with injury." I just think, yeah, this is a definite miss for me. >> Okay, stick him down. We'll move on to the uh move on to the next one. Aiden Heaven. Now, do you factor in the price tag? He's only a million and a half from Arsenal. So, where do you stand on um Heaven? >> I I've got Heaven as a hit. I think I mean I think he surprised a lot of people when he came into the club. I was expecting maybe the odd game if that. and you know he's actually played quite a lot of games and he has made mistakes but he's also had some really good games. There was a run of form at one point where I was like, "Wow." I mean, he's really nailing down like potentially becoming a starter. And again, he's coming into a team where there's a lot of turbulence at Man United, you know, and you're a young player having to hold your head up high, playing in a position that he's only played for like 2, three years as a center back. So, I think Aiden Heaven for 1.5 million is a really good signing and it's I think it's taken everybody by surprise. So, I've got him definitely as a hit. >> Do you agree, Dy? You got a factor he's only 20. He's already made 28 appearances in all comps and that for one a half million for someone that's >> even had that amount of game time. >> Absolutely. I think the context around the signing is crucial in terms of that that transfer fee. I also felt pretty sorry for him in midweek having to play at left back position that he's never really had to play before up against Juliano Simeone and a number of different Atleti forwards. Julian Alvarez was there. Lookman then came on as well. It was like a really tough test and actually Man United played reasonably well compared to their recent performances in that but still couldn't get over the line. >> Okay, stick up. Next up, another player that splits the fan base, Patrick Doru. It depends on what position you're talking about, right? >> There we go. With Dorgu, it's like he was signed to play at left wing back, then made his debut, I believe, at right wing and then Carrick plays him left wing and then you think to yourself, we've been crying out for like a left back. Oh, when is like, you know, replace Luke Shaw now and who's ever going to take a role? Patrick Dorgu plays for the football club and nobody's even considering that maybe he should be the left back. So that's a damning indictment on on him there. He's not good enough to be our left winger. You mean think there's Kuna and Rashford for example. And then at left back he hasn't got that that role nailed on and there's reports coming out that you know Inos kind of regret maybe not signing a left back this summer. You link think about we're linked with Luke Shaw and stuff. So you think to yourself where does that leave Dorgu now? You know I love the the moment against Man City. I love the goal against Arsenal. I actually actually like the guy, you know, but also 111 days missed. I believe it is in through injuries. >> I mean, it's it's hard to put him as a hit because I just don't know what his long-term role at Manchester United is going to be. So, I've got to go miss this one. >> I spoke to him a couple weeks ago and he says himself that his primary position is left back and that's the position that he sees himself. >> I would like to see him give be given a chance then, you know, but it doesn't seem like he's going to get that. So, >> okay. >> Yeah. Yeah, still very young though. >> Unfortunately, >> good chat and good name drop Sam as well. Like that. >> Great. Love it. Next up. >> Tough one. >> Been talking about this off air for for a long time. He doesn't know where to put him. >> This one I think I might have to do a majority vote here on it genuinely like >> ah I don't really know with Kuna like really >> I'm not too sure you know. I think last season him and Inbumo they contributed you know towards the end of the se in terms of Man United getting third place. I think they did contribute. I think Kuna didn't start the season too well ended the season well >> and we'll get to Boom in a sec but >> again I just think to myself like what what is your strongest position? You know are you a 10? Are you a left winger? Like sometimes he's playing in the nine and when he's playing in the nine he's popping up all over the pitch which is not really helping us. He has scored some goals, but I do think in the long term for Manchester United, is he 100% going to be a player that we are still going to be relying on? I think we still need a left winger. You know, I think we still need one, which is his position. >> If Bruno Fernandez was to leave, am I saying, "Oh, yeah, that's just cuz, you know, Kuna is going to move into the 10." Now, I'm not I'm not convinced. I'm not too sure if that's the if that's the case. So, with Kuna, >> it's a really tough one. you know, they I think they've got some credit for contributing last season with that Carrick kind of like resurgence, >> but I don't think he started t
