Sandro and Jamie Carragher pick their all-time Brazilian Premier League XIs
Sandro picks his all-time Brazilian Premier League XI and explains his choices position by position, while Jamie Carragher offers a tweaked XI. The discussion centres on goalkeeper and midfield calls and on how Brazilian players are rated differently in England and Brazil.
- Gomes should be the goalkeeper in this all-time Brazilian Premier League XI — He helped Sandro settle at Tottenham like a translator, father and friend, made incredible saves in tough moments and was a great penalty saver
- David Luiz deserves a place — He won the Premier League and played very well in it
- Fernandinho and Gilberto Silva should be the midfield picks, not Casemiro just because of his legend status — Fernandinho was brilliant in the Premier League and Gilberto Silva was key when Arsenal won the title
- Brazilian teams need two holding midfielders — Brazil are attacking and need stronger defenders who can also play; Dunga was tough but could pass and score
- Coutinho deserves a place in the XI — He caused opponents plenty of problems during his Liverpool spell
- Firmino is rated more highly in England and among Liverpool fans than in Brazil — He did not play that much for the Brazil national team, so he is less recognised in Brazil than in London and England
- Gabriel Jesus should be in the front line — He is a winner and knows how to score, and Sandro needs a scorer like him
- João Pedro could easily make this all-time Brazilian Premier League XI and become the next big striker in the Premier League — The host says he has been fantastic this season, while Sandro says he could easily be in the list and is only kept out by the 11-player limit
- Juninho felt like the first iconic Brazilian in the Premier League and was excellent between the lines — For Carragher's generation, Juninho was the early Brazilian representative in the Premier League and formed a samba midfield with Emerson at Middlesbrough
- Raphinha was fantastic in the Premier League and is doing amazingly at Barcelona now — He proved himself in England and his current Barcelona form shows his quality

Sandro, you've brought your playlist along as well this evening. >> So, here we go. >> It's [laughter] difficult. It's It's difficult, huh? >> Because now Sandro is gonna pick his Brazilian Premier League 11. And we'll we'll show you the options first [music] of all. Sandro, you can have a little dance while you're waiting for the options to come if you like. >> Yeah. >> Here are the goalkeepers. I mean, that is some quality right there. Um well >> did you did you produce amazing goalkeepers don't Brazil as as a country for a long time isn't it? Yeah. >> Yeah. We had Tafarel that's >> good could good could good keeper. I pick already Gomez. Um I could pick Ederson Alison Julia but uh Gomez helped me a lot in Tottenham to to understand everything. He was my translator, my dad, my friend. He was everything. and and also in the goal uh in those moment that you you are winning and um in the extra time and you >> you are suffering there and he comes and >> and I oh thanks god he made some incredible saves he he had very long arms [laughter] >> a great penalty saver wasn't he >> yeah as well and I pick >> okay so that's your goalkeeper let's have a look at the defenders we're not going to force a formation on you because you know you might want to play your own way so that's your your options, who are you going to go for? >> Um, I will pick David Luiz. Um, he had he won the the Premier League and he played so well and he deserve to to be in that list. Chago Silva as well. H what a defender. >> Is Is he like a real legend in Brazil seeing as like a Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. and and he's top good man and and top top player and he needs to be there as well. And um as a defender I will pick um Gabrielle also >> um wow >> he's a winner. >> He's one of the best defenders right now. I think the the interesting thing on there you've picked sort of three center backs and when you think of Brazil you think of fullbacks a lot don't you? Maybe there's some good players there, but there's not sort of the outstanding Brazilian fullbacks that you, you know, you think of over the years, is there? >> Maybe their style of fullback is not suited to our >> Maybe, maybe >> potentially not as valued highly as here. We've lost the music. Let's have the music back. [laughter] >> Right. Right. So, we've got a back three. So, what about some midfield screening? Do we need some of that? Maybe potentially. We've um the team is taking shape nicely. >> Let's uh let's have a look at the midfield options. Plenty of choice here. >> Yeah, this this is hard for me because you can see here Kazmiro is a legend, >> but I will pick those one that affected the most in the Premier League, >> you know, and I think Fernandinho. >> Wow. [snorts] in in United he played brilliant and I will pick Ju Silva as well >> in that um moment when Arsenal >> won the the title and >> so you've got two holding players two holding players is can I just ask because that's obviously your position in Brazil but that that that's feels like a really important position in Brazil where a lot of the times they've had great players but they always the teams I remember even going back to sort in 94 winning the World Cup with Dunga in there. They always seem to have really two sitting midfield players a lot of the time. >> Yeah, because we are attacking attacking >> and uh we needed to have stronger defenders and can play as well because Donga he's tough but he could pass the ball well. He could go he could score and um yeah and I put two holding midfielders. Um, and I will put Willian as well. >> Okay. On the wide on the wide areas. >> Yeah. Because William I think Willian is the one that have the most Premier League appearance. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Great player. Great player William. >> And also I will that that guy caused me problems in the games. Coaching. >> Yeah. >> Philip Coinho. Um, >> okay. his time >> in Liverpool. >> Um yeah, I'm just remembering and few moments that we we you know we played against and and it's all nice to to to remember those those moments and Philip coaching you deserve to be in that list. >> Let's have a reminder of the team so far. So we the team is building. We've got Gomez. We've got a nice strong back three [laughter] music back >> the two screeners and then William and Coutinho in the wide areas which leaves us room for bit of talent in the forward line. Okay, let's have a look what you have to choose from. Remind ourselves of the talent [music] that we've seen in the Premier League as well of the Brazilians. I I mentioned um well let let's take I mentioned Janinho. I can't see him on that list. Maybe [laughter] he was on the he was on the midfield list. So go on then. Who's your front three going to be? >> Um I will pick uh Roberto Filmino. Uh he showed that he's um and he's u is he's he's highly rated in England, even higher by Liverpool supporters as well. What's the feeling around Firmino in Brazil? Is he is he rated as highly as he should be? >> No. >> No. No. I think um they they love Fimino more here than in Brazil. >> Why do you think that is? Uh well because FINU didn't play as much in Brazil national team and um and for for example me as well in Brazil nobody you know if if I go in the street is not if I'm here in in London I will be more people yeah recognized. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Is I think the same with with >> Fino. Okay. Interesting. Uh, there's your man. So, he gets a place in the front three. Still two more births left in Sandro's team. Who's next? >> Wow. Gabrielle Jesus. He's a winner. He He won how many times? Uh, >> and he knows how to score. And for me, I need to have someone like him to score. Uh and um another one, the last one I will I will put um Gabrielle Martinelli. I think he showed um he won the league as well and and he did a great impact here in the the Arsenal Arsenal team. >> Do you think if we're picking this in a couple of years time you might have Echo on that list? >> Exactly. Exactly. Estavo has a great great career in front of of him and just the injuries. I'm I'm a worried about the injuries. >> What do you think about Xiao Pedro? Because he didn't go to World Cup in the summer. We think he's he's going to be the next really big striker in the Premier League. He's been fantastic this season. >> John Pedro as well could be in that list easy >> easily. Easily. I don't know. I don't know why I don't pick John Pedro. [laughter] You can only have 11. And we can talk about Ryan as well at Bournemouth. >> Yeah, it's hard to put just 11, you know. Yeah. Um, >> but those are the guys that has the potential to to to be there in [clears throat] the future. >> Let's have a look at your team in all its glory. Sandro, uh, >> deserves the music. >> Oh, wow. I think I think it's got a bit of everything this team, huh? coin and William Gabri come on in the back Louise with the ball. Gabrielle took you. [laughter] >> I like it. Jamie always thinks that he knows best. So [laughter] we we asked Jamie to do the same exercise and Jamie picked seven players the same as you, Sandro. >> Oh, >> but this is Jaime's tweaked team. No surprise. The goalkeeper. Yeah. Yeah, of course. Of course, of course. >> Or Fabinho. >> Fabinho. Fabinho. Yeah. Also, >> that could have been a close call. You did go for Janinho. >> Oh, I love Jin. Between the lines was kind of the first. Well, he wasn't the very first, but he was >> the very first, you know, you do we we have to acknowledge sometimes on Sky Sports football did begin before the Premier League. It did. [laughter] It did actually. Yeah. And if you remember for people of my age, >> Mirandinia, do you remember him? Mirangian Mirin >> is is there left foot? No, >> Miria. >> He liked to dribble and he liked to shoot a lot. >> He was castle in the late 80s. He's the first Brazilian I can remember in English football. But Janinho did feel like the first one in the Premier League. Emerson came along with him as well. So it was that sambber field, wasn't it? At Medb. >> Oh, you got Rafin in the team as well. >> And Rafinho I thought was fantastic for league. You see what he's doing now at Barcelona is amazing. And and we've got something similar to what uh does Aby played tonight. >> Your back your back line is is the same as as mine, >> but I've got a better keeper. [laughter]
