How will Martinez outburst impact Manchester United? | Premier League Weekend Live
Martinez's public blast at Manchester United — Carrick calms the storm and eyes the January window
This Premier League Weekend Live segment zeroes in on Lisandro Martinez's post-match outburst after the Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, where he questioned the club's recruitment and direction. The panel dissects the timing and motives behind his comments, while Michael Carrick tells the show Martinez has apologized, the matter is closed, and United will look to strengthen in the January window.
- Carrick has dragged United back from "circus" territory — After a turbulent period, Carrick's arrival steadied the club and put out the fires
- Martinez's interview is confusing because you can't tell who he's targeting — He mentions the sporting director and new signings without naming anyone, leaving his grievance vague
- Players publicly questioning the hierarchy was never the done thing in English football — From the Neville-Giggs generation that was simply not how it was done, and Jason Wilcox's role is far more nuanced than just bringing in players
- Any criticism of Wilcox or anyone else should have stayed inside the building — There is no upside to going public with it unless you've already spoken internally
- Even if fans back him, Martinez is still wrong as a professional — Fans pay their hard-earned money and are entitled to their views, but Martinez is paid by the club and should sort his own job out first
- Martinez has no standing to lecture the club right now — He was bullied against Szalai in a game they should have won, so he's the last person who should be speaking out
- Martinez has apologized and the club has moved on quickly — The passion and will to win is what matters; the players are in good spirits
- He sees plenty to be positive about and refuses to dwell on negativity — They sit four points off fourth and are still very much alive in the Champions League
- There will definitely be work done in the January window — The next window always brings opportunities and the club will look to come out stronger
- It's refreshing that Martinez apologized for the timing but not the substance — That signals the criticisms were genuine and not just heat-of-the-moment
- Martinez shouldn't be playing against Leeds this weekend — That type of game doesn't suit him anyway, and now the scrutiny makes it worse
- The only way back for Martinez is a dominant performance — If he does play, a stormer would answer every question raised this week
- This controversy doesn't help Carrick; it tests his leadership — The reference case is Chelsea's handling of Caicedo — sidelining players hurt the team and ultimately the manager; this is another unwanted distraction
- The timing of the Leeds trip is dreadful — Elland Road is electric and the crowd will relish seeing Martinez struggle
- The upcoming run is brutal for any Manchester United manager — Chelsea away, Newcastle away, Liverpool away — no breathing space before the international break
- Players are paid to perform on the pitch, and this whole saga distracts from that — Performances and results are the only currency that counts; a world-class six weeks from Martinez through November would put the issue to bed
- Score prediction: Leeds 3-1 Manchester United — Panelist gives his prediction
- Score prediction: Leeds 2-1 Manchester United — Second panelist gives his prediction

Well, look, boys, we had to start there. I mean, it was it was an extraordinary interview. It was one of those where like you see the transcript kind of come through online and then you got to see the real thing just to make sure he definitely said it. I Ash Roy Keane's kind of called the club this week a bit of a circus. Would you agree? >> Uh well, we got away Manchester United got away from that. I feel like Michael Carrick did so well to put fars out, stabilize the club, which is seems to be in his nature. >> Yeah. Now it's just reared its ugly head a little bit again. I don't understand the whole thing. What What >> What is he trying to say? Is he talking because if I was a recruit that come in the summer, I'm pulling him on the plane. Are you talking about me? >> What do you What are we talking about? Are we talking about Jason Wilcox? Are we talking about the players? >> But what was it? That was that was the almost the difficulty of it, wasn't it? Because he he wasn't really clear. Obviously, he mentioned the sporting director thing and then he's talking about new signings. But I guess Pruss, do you think >> for someone in Martinez's case, someone who's not been in the best of form? >> Did it surprise you that he's the one who's came forward? >> Yeah. And it it's vague enough to roll back from and it's vague enough not to um really pick people out. I mean, the other part of it, if you look from a slightly different angle and think if you're going to go full scorched earth, >> start naming people. So you go far enough and then then it's it's goes a bit gray. But it's always been a rare one and and generation I keep hearing it from footballers of of our era Ash that it's um if you're not as teammates if you're not like the best player at that time playing immensely well and you say that you walk back and everyone kind of goes >> sorry what do you mean us lot and it's when you've had a game such as he has when you've had a start to the season broadly like Man United have had it's a strange thing to come out and say um there's a slightly different approach I think um regards um geographically our players can question the hierarchy was it was never really the the done thing I don't think over here from a certain era because Jason Wilcox does a job that people look at and say it's that that's the job be it'd be far more nuance than that not just bringing players in and making sure that you've got the right teammates for a certain person. So to say he could quite clearly come down the steps and say in the dressing room well can you start defending like we've paying you to defend and can you start scoring goals like we're asking to score goals. there'd be a lot of finger pointing. That's not that's going back to Ash's point. That's what Michael had kind of really quietened down. Everyone was on the same kind of page and now seemingly again they're not. >> But presumably this Martinez will have a relationship with Jason Wilcox of sorts. It's not like this kind of cloaked figure that he doesn't talk to. there will be chats between him et but should there be I understand if you're getting brought in by a certain person and then maybe because Wayne Rooney has spoken about it as well hasn't he about him going in and questioning the management and Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs pulling in the next day saying that's not quite what you do and how you go about it there'll be an element of um a conversation of sorts between them but gosh you've captained many teams you wouldn't be knocking on the door the technical director the recruitment say can you where are the players >> no and I think it it it assists us in this job that we're doing something to talk about. >> I would love have that conversation in house. If you want to speak to Jason Wilcox or criticize him or anybody at the football club, manager, players, >> do it inside. I I don't see any benefit apart from for yourself maybe to move away from the club to go and speak out to the media if you haven't already spoken in house. >> A weird a weird way of thinking about I was thinking about this today, right? Do has he won more than he's lost though in this situation as a whole? Because the fans agree with him have really liked it and and you know like fans have come out in support of him saying I'm so pleased that he's spoken up about the club. >> Do you think he'll kind of almost look at that and kind of go well everyone agrees with me and it kind of gets people off his back a little bit? >> Well, if he does think that I think he's wrong to be honest because the fans are going to think what they're going to think and they're completely valid because they they pay their hard earned money completely. That doesn't mean to say but they're not professionals. He's a professional paid by Manchester United to do his best for that team, for his teammates. >> And like you said, if I'm Michael Carrick, Jason Mccross, a teammate, anybody inside the building, >> I'm the instantly I'm saying, are you doing your job? Because I saw you get bullied the other day against Salanki. You didn't, we could have won that game. You didn't win it. You're not the person to come out and be speaking about anything at this point in time. Get your job sorted first and then maybe we might be able to talk about it. >> Yeah. Okay. Well, we sat down with Michael Carrick yesterday. He insists Landro has apologized and that is the end of the matter. Uh he also spoke about whether the club is ambitious enough and revealed there could be transfer activity in January. I >> want to bring you some quotes just receiving from Martinez after Manchester United's defeat in Madrid um tonight. Uh he's just said the result was poor again. I have to try and control myself here. This is not a Champions League quality club. and he says, "I expected more from our technical director in the summer. I expected more investment in the summer." And that's him controlling himself. >> Michael, thank you very much for taking the time as always. Now, it has been an eventful few days. Can you just take me back to after the Atletico Madrid game? You see Landre Martinez's comments after the game. What do the next few days look like after that? >> It was something that we we we dealt with as a football club and and and Leech's um acknowledged that um that he's made the mistake and and then we've moved on pretty quickly. I think it's um it's important to to acknowledge what it was. Um there's a lot of emotion, a lot of passion, a lot of willingness to a will to win in there and wanting more and wanting more from from all of us and um as a as a as a football club, as a team and results and everything that comes with it. Well, we've actually we've moved on pretty quickly from that and the and the boys have um been in good spirits. >> Can I just ask about how you handle situations like this? You know, do you leave it to the changing room to forandro to talk to, for example, or do you act as that bridge between them to diffuse a situation like that, especially with the boardroom involved? >> There's a bit of them placing each other, of course. I think that's that's something I've been used to since since I first stepped at this football club, but of course, as a as a football club, we've got we got strong values. you know, we have um it's carried through through a long long time and um and it's up to us to to pass it on and evolve and um that's part of me trying to guide the players and help the players and not know what what we expect of them, what should be expected of them and um I think that's pretty clear. Just on one thing he did say in the initial interview when he questions the ambition of the club and the direction of the club. Do you feel this club is ambitious enough? >> This is some fantastic football club this um and we're striving we're striving to to get back to the top. You know, we've been there before uh repeatedly and we've had a bit of a spell when when when we haven't quite been there and for all of us, you know, we're striving to to get to the top and we're building. we're all pushing in the same direction to to try and achieve that. >> His comments did resonate though with a lot of the fan base and I know you talk about, you know, being one of their own. You understand some frustration that maybe has been pent up because of the start to the season. >> I think because of the start of the season, I think um I've got frustrations about um about not getting the right results. You know, the players have got frustrations about not getting the right results. >> And it's ENDED UP IN THE BACK OF THE NET. WELL, Manchester United WONDERING HOW ON EARTH THAT HAS HAPPENED, BUT 10 MAN SPURS IN STOPPAGE TIME AT THE END OF THE GAME HAVE FOUND A LEVELER. My main focus is is helping the team and driving this club forward and and and leading and and and emotion's quite good at times. Fire and passion is good at times. You just got to use it and guide it in the right way. And you know, it feels that there's there's been a lot of negativity in some ways. And you can you can focus on that or you can focus on actually we're four points off fourth in the league. Um, we've won one game in the Champions League, we've we've lost one. We're kind of it's there's a lot to play for in that. Um, and you can focus on what's possible and uh I don't think about myself um in my own situation about how much time or what what's what it looks like for me. It's um there's no individual that's more important than this football club. And um there's a lot of individuals have passed through it. you know, some players, some of the greatest players, um, a couple of the greatest managers, especially one that I work for, but the club's always bigger than that, um, certainly bigger than me. And so my my focus is on what what the club needs, how we can get it to the top again for all the great supporters that we got and, um, get that feeling again. >> But do you think there is scope in January having these conversations around this time of year that if the club needed to strengthen, do you think there is scope to do that in January? I think January is the next transfer window. So, I think you always when the next transfer window comes, you want to plan and you want to make the best of it. And um whatever that looks like at this stage, we we don't quite know. And um but without doubt, there's there's opportunities because the transfer windows open. So, we'll definitely be we were looking at that and trying to come out stronger in whatever way that looks like. >> Well, look, I mean, Michael Carrick not so long ago was putting out fires about JJ Gabriel. Now he's doing the same with Lissandro Martinez. Ash, I think it was really interesting though that Martinez he's apologized for the timing but not for his like actual comments about what he what he said. Does that surprise you at all that he's he's gone that way? >> Uh there's an element of that that's quite refreshing. I think that whether or not we agree with what he said, he he hasn't he obviously stands by what he said. Although it as you said it's very loose and we're not kind of sure he didn't nail it down. But yeah, they've obviously spoken um in the club and he's decided I'm going to apologize for the time and rightly so. It wasn't the right time regardless just straight after the game. >> Um lot of pressure on himself now this weekend. I think if if he plays don't think he does anyway because >> you don't think he does. You think you think they may? >> I I wouldn't play him against leads anyway regardless of whatever because he he's showed that that's not the type of game for him. But if he does play all eyes are on him now at this point. >> Yeah. Would you be surprised to see him? I think he's in the squad. So, >> yeah. Well, I think I think Michael said in the course of the week about he's got to pick the best team to win against a lead side that's enjoying itself in the Premier League. So, it heaps more pressure on here. I mean, we could be chatting about this on Monday and he's had an absolute stormer of a game and and and boxed off everything that leads have thrown at him. That's that's the only way that he wriggles himself out of this position, I think, in very very uh quickly. And you just I don't I mean, when you say you feel for Michael Carrick, we worked a lot with him as as Bora boss. with a lot of time for us and watching his coaching journey. I mean, he's in a wonderful football club. He'll be getting paid very, very well, all that type of stuff. But you say about the JJ Gabriel thing, it's almost kind of and given social media and how quick the feedback can be from an interview such as that. But either sat in the dressing room or on the team bus or on the plane and just gone, >> just give me two minutes. Seriously, can we just move beyond the next thing? Let me pick a team. Let me get me a result. Let me get us back into form. >> But do you think in a way is it not quite a good thing that this is happening for Carrot right now? because I mean two wins out of nine in all comps. I mean they're sitting 13th in the Premier League. >> Is it not taking the heat off him? >> Well, he said there wasn't he said it's about it's not about what he does and people feeling for him as an individual. He understands where he sits in the kind of Man United firmament. So there is an element of that. I I don't think it does help because then how does he show strong leadership? Ash does he say he's got this this this player to apologize? Does it does he then say you look at what happened at at Chelsea with Renior and having to box off players for a couple of games. you have to cut off your nose to spite your face and nobody wins in that because a team doesn't play well and the manager ends up moving on further down the line. So, it's it's it's another thing that he possibly didn't need. And again, we're talking about a Man United issue that's not about necessarily what we're seeing on the pitch. And it's a cracking game at the weekend for everyone involved now because they they've got to get a result and a performance. >> Exactly. I mean, look, you played at Leeds. I mean, Ellen Road is is >> Wasn't quite the same in League One Roman. >> Yeah. But but Ellen Road nonetheless >> top tier open on >> Yeah. But but but nonetheless, >> it's an amazing atmosphere. >> Is it terrible timing for United to go to to to that >> and for I mean the place is electric anyway given what the atmosphere is on the road. They'll be absolutely buzzing to see that. To say it's hostile is an understatement. They absolutely hate each other. Uh and you'll see that in the game and they'll be licking the lips for for Lzando Martinez not to have the game of his life. >> Absolutely. Ash, do do you fear for for Michael Carrick? >> Cuz I mean the next the next set of fixtures that will will bring him up, but the next set of hard. >> I I fear for any manager of Manchester United because there's so much noise around that football club at all times. Even last season when I thought he did an excellent job, there was still noise. You look at you look at that that that next 10 fixtures. >> It's not nice. >> I mean, you're not looking at anyone really there and going that's a given every single game. >> Yeah. Chelsea away, Liverpool away, Newcastle away. >> The thing is at this level as well, and I've already spoken about Leo and being at Chelsea, but and Michael knows it off off obviously from playing at a club such as this, >> there is until the international, but there's absolutely no letup. You're doing a press conference probably every day. You're preparing for matches two, three days away. It is absolutely relentless. So, the best way they get themselves through this, and 10 games seems like an awful long time away, you just got to box off performances and results. the best we if if they sat at the end of November and Martin has had an absolute worldly six weeks then great issue done dusted and if Michael's there and they've turned a corner great that's the that's the only real currency that you've got that's why we're talking about the whole outburst which is so away from the fundamentals of what these people are getting paid for is to play better on the football pitch >> very easy sat here on the sofa to >> yeah exactly about game >> yeah very quickly score predictions for for leads man United you reckon Ash we go Um, I'm going three 3-1 leads. >> I'll go two-1 leads. >> Two-1 leads. Okay. Wins for leads. PR, thanks for joining us though, mate. What games are you looking after today? >> Uh, we've got Watford Charton and that's always an issue. I mean, we talk about hierarchies and uh debates to be had. Watford's a perennial question. So, we're going to chat with that with Aaron Ben and Tommy Smith. So, looking forward to it. And the good thing is I go away from it because there's a gladiator legend about to come on. I see him. He looks amazing.
