Champions League: Man Utd beaten by Atletico as Arsenal cruise past Lille

The panel reviews Manchester United's 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid, covering Yoro's red card, Carrick's pressure and the key Leeds game. They then assess Arsenal's win over Lille, arguing Arsenal are among Europe's elite but still lack the X-factor and a natural scorer to win the Champions League, with PSG favoured.

But let's focus on the Champions League first of all. A victory for Arsenal to come. Let's start with defeat for Manchester United in Madrid against Atletico. 2-0 it finished. Lenny Yuro sent off in the second half as well. Clinton Morrison watched it here in the studio and Courtney >> and Courtney in the second half. Absolutely. Once you finished, >> good to have some teammate working alongside you, wasn't it? >> Dream team. >> Let me start with you as you watch the majority of it. Uh I mean it continues the poor run of results for Manchester United but let's face it not help when you go behind after 47 seconds. No, it's another bad start. You know what, Jules? People will say it is an improvement from the weekend, but they don't need improvement. They need to start winning football matches now. They're Michael Carrick will come under pressure again. He's obviously the changes that he's made. He's got one eye on the weekend against Leeds, which is a massive, massive game for Man United, but Leeds will go into that game full of confidence. They went a goal down after 47. It's not good enough. You can't concede like that. When you go into a place like Athletic Madrid, it's host. The first thing you would say as a manager is for the first 15 20 minutes the fans are going to be behind them. Let's stay in the game. Let's be nice and compact. Not easy to beat. They're so open. Bayena gets the ball over the top. He just plays it across and Barius has got like six yards out just passes it into the back of the net. But after that they started playing and created four golden opportunities. Jules and they finishing let them down and and then the second half Lenny Euro gets sent off which I don't think it's a sending off. I don't like the rules in the Champions League because it is a contact sport. There was the slightest of contact but for me it weren't enough for a red card and then they go and score a second goal where David does ever so well. Good save from Lammens and Lman puts it into an empty net. You can say it was a more positive performance on the week tonight than it was on the weekend but it doesn't matter about that. Man United football club need results at the moment. So, as I said, the weekend against leadeds is huge for them cuz after that they in the Champions League go to Como and that's going to be difficult. Sees Fabregas team are very good. Courtney, you'd started watching by the time Yoro was sent off. What what was your take on it? >> I think there's a couple of opportunities that they created that they should have done better with. There was one where Bruno Fernandez hit the um hit the crossbar, a nice short corner routine. But aside from that, I think all through the game and sort of bits that I saw out the corner of my eye as well. Um they're so loose at the back and I think that's one of the main issues. I suppose there's a positive in one sense that when you go one n down within a minute that it doesn't turn nasty really quickly. You're looking at thinking this could be four, five. So there's a positive in that, but loose moments and yes, I don't think it was a sending off for Euro either, but it's the fact that the way that they got exploited and how it got there will be an issue for Manchester United. And as Clinton said, when you create four golden opportunities away at Madrid in the Champions League, you've got to score at least one of them and then build a platform from there. So there'll still be an element of Leads looking at this thinking they really fancy themselves on the weekend and that's a long and the short. Is it more positive? Yes. But the long and the short of it is you have to win games and >> I don't think he's massively under pressure yet in terms of Michael Carrick. I don't think necessarily leads defines him, but it probably goes a long way to it after this tonight as well. >> Uh they're on their worst run since January 2025. Their only two wins in nine games this season came against Sabah, the champions of Azabaijan and um Ipsswich. How do you think he approaches that game at Ellen Road on Sunday? Clinton, how does he go about it? Well, it's first and foremost not to get beat and not to concede after 47 seconds because if you do, >> it's a hard place to go. Everyone will know that play that Ellen Road, it's difficult and that is it's that's a rivalry between the >> It's going to be intimidating. >> Of course it will. And and it's going to be difficult. They'll be in their faces. Calvin Lewon will be saying getting crosses into the box. I've got these defenders. That's what he'll be saying. They've got players in Okafuro who causes problems. They do it well with their wing backs, Goodmanson, sorry, and Jayen Bogle. And they got Ampedu in midfield. He does a brilliant job. It'll be a difficult game. It'll be a really difficult It'd be interesting to see which 11 he starts with cuz as I said, he made a lot of changes um from the weekend game to tonight. So, it'll be really um interesting to see how the game goes. But yeah, leads will leads go into that game for me as favorites. But it's a massive game. Yeah, they do. And you might look at me a bit surprised, but the thing is I think leads have started ever so well. I covered the game >> on the weekend against Arsenal. I thought they were fantastic for 60 minutes and had a chance at 1 nil to make it 2-0. Then it's our uphill task for Arsenal to get back in. So this is a massive game for Man United for and you know what, pick the players that are ready to roll up their sleeves and go there and have a go because that's it's a big game for the fans as well. As I say, there's a big rivalry between the two teams and yeah, they have to pick theirel up and go again. Yeah, huge huge occasion on Sunday at on road for United. Can they respond after defeat in Madrid tonight? Two-0il they lost. What about Arsenal? Better night for them. A pretty routine win really for them. Two and some two in the Champions League. No goals conceded. 14 straight wins now in the league and group stage of the Champions League. M watched it here in the studio. Leil kept them out for about an hour, but once they got one, it was never in doubt, was it M? >> Yeah, they just grind you down. I thought they done well. They penned them in second half. First half weren't great, but you know, they probe probe and you know, even them little bits of play in the first half. It still tires the defense. They were sitting on the edge of their box and sooner or later mentally you switch off and they come out second half, they kept on probing and then they switch off. But what a goal by Timber. What a goal. Ball gets played into. It's a brilliant touch. Takes it away from the defender. Just dinks it over the goalie. And then again, you know, they bring on Saka Havvertz and Odigard. You know, they've just gone one nil up and then they just run right then. Just run right. Two good goals with AZ and and Saka and ask all the big boys in Europe. You know, they're one of the big boys. You know, them Paris Sanjiman probably Bayern Munich, Man City. They're probably probably the four, aren't they, where you look at, they're the big boys. So, yeah. And they make it look easy. You know, Le not the worst team in the world. You know, for me, they're no mugs. And they they they played these and and they made them look Yeah. just run the mill. They were petrified. I think they got out there half twice in the second half. So, for me, yeah, very very good. Very good Arsenal in the end. >> And you talked about the quality of his goal that that opened the scoring for Arsenal, but just having Yurian Timber back, they missed for much of last season with that injury. How how big is that for them? >> Well, massive. And Ben White Ben White's done well. Ben White's done well. So, you know, that's how hard it is at Arsenal now, you know, for for places. You know, Lewis Skelly goes and plays at fullback. Bruno comes in and does really well. What do you do at the weekend against Forest? You bring Lewis Skellyy back in there. I don't you know, Clinton was saying last week on the show, Bruno ain't going to be happy sitting on the bench every week. For me, he has to play. He's the one who ticks it. He's the one who got them little probing passes. So, for me, it'll be interesting come what? Sunday, see who he plays at Forest. >> Yeah, go to Forest on Sunday. Then next week they go to Munich to play Bayern on the Wednesday night. No Elise say and actually given the way well Bayern nearly lost in Viking tonight they'll fancy the chances weren't they in Munich. >> Yeah I think it's a big tester. I think it is a big tester. I think these are the games in the Champions League, the ones you really look at away from home where it sets you instead for when it gets to the knockout stages when you go and play the big boys cuz you know over the years bar this year Arsenal have gone away at certain rounds especially Bayern Munich as well and got well beat. So for me I think it's a big game next weekend next midweek I think if they can get a result there it just gives you plenty of confidence but Arsenal will go deep in this they you know they will be very very deep. They're they're a top team. They got the squad as well to cope with Champions League football. You know, I'd expect them to get to get to the semi-final. >> Out of interest, who would be your favorites right now to win this? >> I I just think PSG still I think PSG have that that stardust. You know, they got that little bit extra up front than the other teams. And I just think when when you want to win a competition, you need X factors. When you want to win leagues, you need seven, seven and a half out of 10 every week to win competitions. You need that nine out of 10 or 10 out of 10. Have Arsenal got enough X factor in their team? >> No, not really. No, sometimes I don't think up front. I don't think they got that natural goal scorer that when it gets tough and they go to Bayern Munich next week and they don't dominate and they ain't getting loads of chances. >> Have they got someone in the team who two chances, one goal? >> I don't think they have.
