Miserable Man Utd ripped apart by Como | Paper Talk
Paper Talk: Carrick under fire after Manchester United's Como humiliation, with Arsenal, Villa and Anderson also discussed
The show focuses on the crisis at Manchester United after their heavy defeat by Como, discussing Carrick's job, Bruno Fernandez's public questioning of tactics and the board's responsibility. It then covers Arsenal's draw at Bayern, Kane's performance, Aston Villa's strong Champions League form and Anderson's possible retirement.
- This defeat by Como is worse than the Grimsby loss a year ago and could cost Carrick his job; United have turned from Sir Alex Ferguson's great family into a dysfunctional, divided club — The performance was pathetic and spineless, the captain publicly questioned the manager, and the hierarchy must also take responsibility
- Ratcliffe and the other United bosses let Carrick down in the transfer window, and the root problem is a lack of leadership rather than just the manager — United needed full-backs and a backup striker, the midfield signings were not good enough, and the recruitment process lacked sense
- Carrick probably will not last much longer, but many of the problems are not really his fault and the United hierarchy should face the questions — He is not a big-name manager and is seen as disposable, his defensive tone in the press conference came from pressure, and the club's problems keep recurring
- Bruno Fernandez's public questioning of Carrick's tactics is embarrassing; a captain should rally the team rather than create open division — He had not changed the game before being taken off, and the armband should mean leading by example and pulling players together, as it did with Robson
- If Carrick goes, Conte is the most obvious candidate and United could also consider Eddie Howe, but the real problem is that United do not know what they need — Conte recently angled for a job in England and United is probably the only realistic club of that stature, though he dislikes taking over mid-season, while Howe would be less abrasive
- Nico Paz is an absolute talent developing superbly under Fabregas and deserves national-team attention — He did not just score twice; he was confident, technical and precise, and kept running at the United defence
- Arsenal's equaliser at Bayern is a positive result and showed resilience, while criticism of their style is unfair — Rice scored a superb goal, Arsenal have scored fine goals from open play this season, and the team has confidence and resilience
- Kane's reading of the game, vision and technique allow him to play as a No 9 or No 10, and England could even push Bellingham up top with Kane behind — His through-ball for Bayern was a difficult pass executed perfectly, showing he can create as well as score
- Aston Villa looked likely to struggle this season but are now in sensational form; if they get something at Barcelona they will be a serious team, and you should never doubt Emery — They had a huge turnover of players and brought in many young, unproven ones, yet they have won all three Champions League games
- It is a pity if James Anderson's career ends this way, because both his international and first-class careers seem to be ending without his decision; he should have had the chance to go out on his own terms like Stuart Broad — He wanted to keep playing but others made the call, though his legacy is already secure

Hey, great to have your company. Time now for paper talk here on Sky Sports News. Bringing your first look at the sports stories in the morning's newspapers. Joining us are Henry Winter, writer and football boardroom podcast host, and Nick Miller as well, senior writer at The Athletic. Welcome to you both. Let's run you through the back pages. I have an idea of what many of them are going to be talking about. How about this? Paz Bean is the mirror splash after Manchester United are humbled by Niko Paz and Ko. Clueless carrots bashed by Bruno as bosses left on the brink after Italian fiasco. Elsewhere, top guns have rice on the boil is their take on Arsenal's late equalizer against Bayern Munich. The Guardian shares its back page between United's and Sir Jimmy Anderson. Angry Carrick on the brink as Fernandez hits out at United's ko tactics and elsewhere over and out. Anderson set to retire after Lancashier blow. While the Express focuses on Carrick's anger at his players, Carrick plays blame game. Boss blast flops as side hit new low. The paper also covers Aston Villa roster the boss in Villa Stroll as they beat Viking while the star simply goes with Comomaos. Nick Henry, great to have you back on paper talk. I think you know where we're going to start and that's with Manchester United of course. Let's go to the back page of the star. We saw that picture there of Michael Carrick, Bruno Fernandez looking worse for wear. Comomaos is the headline. Bruno and Carrick war as United flops paz out. They say Henry, we're just over a year away uh from that shocking loss by Manchester United to fourth tier Grimby in the Caribel Cup. Is this result on par with that? >> Um that's a good question. No, I actually think it's worse because it looks like it's going to cost or it may well cost Michael Carrick his job. He went straight over to to the fans to applaud them, the 700 Hardy souls who had to put up with that absolute shambles, pathetic, spineless performance for from the team tonight. And then you had, as you've been trailing all evening, you had effectively the war of words. His captain has thrown him under the bus, Landro Martinez. his quotes uh last week were bad enough, but now you got Bruno Fernandez just questioning the manager's tactics and and probably one of them has to go. We've been down this road with many clubs and particularly Manchester United before and there can really only be one outcome because it's cheaper to get rid of the head coach and his assistants than it is to get rid of a bunch of underperforming players. But look, Manchester United, the once great family under Sir Alex Ferguson, have now become a dysfunctional, divided family. And they're people up top who've got to look at themselves. You know, we're not expecting any semblance of of common sense or responsibility taken from by the Glazers because they've never done that since 2005. But I think that Barada and Will Cox and Ratcliffe have just got to look at what they've gone wrong got wrong. And just very simply, they let Michael Carrick down in the transfer window. They needed fullbacks. They needed a backup striker. They bought two out of the three midfielders really are not good enough. Andre Santos and Yuri Tielemans. Why was there a release clause on him? You know, he was getable. So look, it is a chronicle of a death foretold. There are issues all over the club, but it comes down essentially to lack of leadership. Carrick's made mistakes. selection, tactics, inspiration, not particularly inspiring in in press conferences either, but he is the one person who's probably going to pay for this shambles tonight with his job and he is the one of all those I've named who cares most about this great club. >> Yeah, lots to unpick. Nick, let me bring you in here as we look at the back page of the Daily Express. Carrick plays blame game. Boss blast flops as side hit new low. Usually what we see from Carrick Nick is him defending his players at all costs. This is a change of tact from Carrick. Is this a sign that he is under more pressure than ever before? >> Yeah, I mean for sure. I I'm always slightly reticent about judging managers too much when they're kind of being grilled by the press in the aftermath of a result like this. you know, not that not everything is necessarily kind of thought through and you know, he he obviously when presented with, you know, the second player in the space of a week questioning the the some way that the club the or the team is being run um after a European defeat, then you know he got more defensive than he should have been. But that but that is obviously because he knows the the pressures on him. knows that you know he is not the kind of bigname manager that um you know that might have insulated him from uh from you know if this was this these results were happening under someone else then you know he he he's possibly seen as slightly disposable even though as as Henry says the um the problems at the club are you know not really his fault it's and he is sort of forced to go out there all the time and um you know a couple of times we can defend this. It's it's just another example of how people from the club's hierarchy should be um should have these questions asked to them. So yeah, he is under a huge amount of pressure. He he probably isn't going to last too much longer. Um and you know that's that's a real shame as Henry says he's he's very passionate about United. >> Okay, let's look at the Telegraph now. They've splashed on Michael Carrick and their headline Fernandez turns on Carrick. Captain calls out tactics in latest show of disscent. If you don't run, you don't win. Manager retorts. Also reflected in the times as well. Bruno turns on Carrick. United captain questions tactics after humiliating defeat by Ko. Look, you've already picked up on this. Um Henry, the fact that we had just a couple of weeks ago Nissandre Martinez coming out criticizing the hierarchy. Now you've got the captain criticizing the manager and the coaching staff. Is this a sign that perhaps there is a lot of dysfunction and perhaps he's lost the dressing room? Michael Carrick. >> Yeah, and Bruno Fernandez has lost leave of his senses as well as Michael Carrick probably losing the uh the dressing room. It's embarrassing all over. It's particularly embarrassing from Bruno Fernandez because he actually has a certain amount of time in the game before he was rightly hooked to actually do something about this performance. I mean, what we tend to expect from uh from captains is that they rally the troops. They raise their own game. They set their example. This is the club of of Brian Robson, you know, and and others since then who have worn that shirt with pride, who have taken that armband as a sort of call to arms and actually rallied the players. Did Bruno Fernandez did that do that tonight? No, not at all. These war of words, when you look at them, are pretty specific about tactical flaws. Bruno Fernandez effectively saying that his manager got the the tactics wrong. there wasn't sort of man-to-man pressing and then Carrick hit back in a slightly unichel like way actually to have a go because Michael tends to want to keep everything within the in the dressing room and he basically said well they didn't run forward enough they didn't run backwards enough which I have to say just watching the game on on television you could see that and Manchester United fans have been saying it for for a long time there's a lack of mobility intensity running in that team their running figures were I imagine are even worse tonight than they've been recently. But we also have to take a step back and congratulate Ko Sesh Fabregas. What a job he's doing there. Nikopaz, what a player he is. And so, look, there two sides to every story. And Ko were as good as Manchester United were embarrassing. >> Um Ko were very impressive and it was a deserved win, wasn't it? Um Nick, looking at Manchester United and the decisions that they've made for their managers, they've seem to have been through every single type of manager. They've had the relaxed former player in Solaria. They've had the authoritarian in Tenhog. They've had something a little bit different and eccentric in Van Hal. They've had the experienced big personality in Mourinho. They've had the young upand cominging manager in Ruben Amaran. None of them have worked. If Carrick isn't the man for the job, who is? >> Uh well, yeah, I mean this is the the big question. I think the most obvious name that people will think of is Antonio Conte. Um he gave an interview to my athletic colleague uh James Horncastle a couple of weeks ago in which he was sort of fairly nakedly angling for a job in England. He he was talking about England. And you know when you kind of go through the clubs of the stature that Conte might manage want to manage. It's only really United that's probably the the you know that would be realistic at the moment. He he doesn't like taking jobs halfway through a season. He regretted doing that at Tottenham but you know that's Tottenham. But I don't know, will he take another job mid-season in a dysfunctional club? I mean, whether he's the right man for United, they might as well give it a give it a try. Um, you know, as as you say, they've tried pretty much everything else. I suppose Eddie How is the other name that might be around. He's available. He would be kind of slightly um less abrasive, shall we say? Um, so you know, maybe maybe that's what Manchester United need. The problem is that I don't think Manchester United know what Manchester United need at the moment. So it's a bit tricky for the rest of us to work it out as well. >> Yeah, but we will continue to speculate, I'm sure, and reflect in paper talk. Meanwhile, after the match, Michael Carrick said he's not thinking about his position, which is pretty much what he said all along. Um, now Henry, let me come back to you because you did mention Ko and how fantastic this result is for them. What about Nico Paz? two goals on the night. An exciting young talent to keep an eye on. >> Yeah, I mean he comes from good stock. His father Pablo was on the bench at France 98 when Argentina knocked out England in in Sanen. So we've we've had issues with his family before. Uh absolute talent wearing the number 10 shirt and there may well be a vacancy. Well, there is a vacancy in the national team. I mean he's what 21 22. He's developing superbly under Sesh Fabregas. I it wasn't simply the goals, the confident way he took the goals, the the technique and and the precision. It was it was throughout, you know, the time he was on the field, you know, he kept on running at at Manchester United, you know, they dived in on him and it was and he was away, you know, it was it was fantastic to see, but probably very painful for Manchester United to see. Um Henry, let me stay with you because I'm just looking at Manchester United's next round of fixtures and they've got Bournemouth and then they've got a really critical period coming up where they're at Chelsea. Uh they've got that European tie against Roma, they play Villa who have found their form and then they go to Anfield. We could get to the middle of November where things are even worse for Manchester United. Is Michael Carrick's job under threat more so now than it's ever been? >> 100%. I mean, you know, I have huge admiration for him and I'd like to see him do well, but you know, if you have performances like that, you have Bruno Fernandez who's such an influential figure within the club, uh, you know, making comments like that which hint at a divided dressing room and doubts about the, uh, the manager. Plus, we've got an international break coming up at at some point, another one. And, uh, owners tend to sort of often move um, or do their uh, you know, get rid of managers during that period. You mentioned Roma. I mean that'll probably bring back certain nice warm memories for Michael Carrick because he probably had his best game ever for them. Certainly in Europe against Rome. He scored a couple of goals against them. But you know this is not about going down memory lane. This is about the future and it looks difficult for Michael Carrick now unfortunately. But others should be looking at themselves as well because they're the ones who've let the club down more than Michael Carrick has. >> Yeah. Could be a long road back for Manchester United to get back to successful times. Um Henry and Nick, we'll leave it there for the moment. We're going to take a quick break now. When we come back, we'll be looking at more of the sports stories in the morning's newspapers, including this in the Daily Mail. That's one way to silence the critics deck as Declan Rice and Harry Kane both shine in Munich. Henry Winter, writer and football boardroom podcast host, and Nick Miller, senior writer at The Athletic. Let's continue our Champions League track and focus on Arsenal. They went over to the alians to play the German champions Bayern Munich as reflected in the Daily Mail here. And uh that's one way to silence the critics's deck is their headline. Declan Rice in in great form and and Henry you you know for Arsenal to go ahead and then have to come from behind to get this equalizer at a difficult stadium to go to. They'll probably see this as a positive result, won't they? >> Yeah, absolutely. and particularly the way as you say the their resilience late on uh with Declan Rice. I mean first it was a superb finish against an outstanding goalkeeper in Norah but also it was the the touch from Yokarez around the corner to to send Declan Rice in there was was great. I mean some of the criticism of their style has been sort of slightly eyebrow raising because last season that you know they were criticized for too many set pieces and this season they actually haven't had too many set pieces and they've scored some fine goals from from open play. Bruno Gum Maris has obviously added to that as well. So absolutely I mean they you know they've got this confidence this resilience you look at a player like Kza I mean he put in quite a lively tackle on on Harry Kane and he tried to sort of control Kane but look Kane is just absolute class and uh but yeah so it was a good performance. The only obvious concern is uh is BA Saka. >> Yeah exactly that and that's reflected in the sun on deck. Then Rice scores they say but sackers off injured. Um and Arteta saying after the match Nick that he felt a sharp pain. That's never good to hear is it? >> No. And it didn't look good at the time. He kind of it was a slightly odd one. He sort of tried to play a pass. He contorted his body in a slightly strange way and he seemed to do something on like the upswing of of the pass he was trying to play. But yeah, he he he immediately kind of went down clutching his his thigh. um clearly in quite a bit of pain and yeah those those things um are never really good and you know Arsenal are a little bit light in those kind of wide areas they um they didn't they sold Trussad Martinelli in the summer but only replaced them with Solace he's obviously out in out at the moment too so um yeah it's um obviously came on and scored a really good goal but um you know if Saka is out for an extended period of time and you kind of you fear that he would be looking at it from um from the first look anyway then um you know they've they've moltas will have to come up with a few slow creative solutions there I think >> yeah it would be a shame to to have to see sacker on the sidelines again after the injury problems that he had last season and of course over the summer with England as well but Henry let me come back to you on Harry Kane because you mentioned him there on the score sheet and stepping up once again and without one of his you know key men around him in Michael Eliso >> yeah absolutely I mean just one thing on the Arsenal's right sided option. I mean they've got Max Dman in there who's got his GCSEs out the way and he's he's he's he's pretty good. You know you have Dman on one side and Mui on the on the other. But yeah absolutely coming back to Harry Kane. I mean the pass he played through for Bayern Munich first. I mean what what what is his best position now? Is a number nine? Is a number 10? I mean it's you know he might actually flip with England and with Bellingham and Bellingham play up top and Kane in behind. He's, you know, he is his reading of the game, his vision, his technique. I mean, that pass was a difficult pass. I can't remember which center half it was behind, but it was just with enough fade to take the ball around him and into space and absolutely put on a plate. So, yeah, look, he's a he's a leader. That penalty against David Ryer, who is a, you know, he's an exceptional goalkeeper and Kane absolutely emphatic. You know, everything about him, the confidence, he knew exactly what he was going to do. the run up and then placing whip whipping it in. Fantastic. Absolutely deceiving a very good goalkeeper. So yeah, I mean look there's so many superlatives with Harry Kane and he's a player we should be completely proud of as a as a footballer, as an England captain and record-breaker, but also as an individual as well. He's a fabulous role model. >> He really is, isn't he? What a player he is. Um let's continue then because there was another Premier League side in action in the Champions League. That was Aston Villa. They feature in the sun just in that top left hand column. Hero Barkley a Viking warrior as Aston Villa beat Norwegian side Viking at 31. That's now six games unbeaten. Nick and Aston Villa have found their form. All right. >> Yeah, I mean I thought they were really going to struggle this season. They obviously had a huge amount of um sort of churn in the summer. They basically lost the spine of their team. um Martineaire's Con went Tieleman's Ollie Watkins and they brought in a lot of quite young and slightly you know possibly unproven players and you know they started um they started the season a bit trickly but uh they're in sensational form I think they're one of only five of the 36 teams in the Champions League who won all three of their games. Next one is a little bit spicier. They've got Barcelona and away in their next Champions League game. So, you know, if they if they can get something there, then, you know, they're really kind of a serious team this season. Yeah. But but as I said, I thought they were really going to struggle this season with the new players integrating them into the team and the the demands of the Champions League. But, um, never doubt Uno Emory, I think, is the message. >> Literally, never doubt Emory in Europe. Uh, here's a stat for you then, Henry. Aston Villa, the second quickest team to record record 20 wins in the European Cup or Champions League behind only Real Madrid. Villa have done it in 30 matches. Real Madrid did it in 29. Well, I mean that's a huge compliment and as Nick says, I mean is such a sort of specialist in Europe and it's I mean probably only Mikuel Arteta of Premier League managers has the sort of control of a club recruitment everything and they're both managers and Unayurie is allowed to manage. He's pretty much allowed to to bring the players in that he wants and you look at his his signings have been terrific. They got one or two good kids stepping up from the academy as well. And he just instills a sort of belief. They love his tactics. They love his his sort of emotional uh element presence in the in the t in the dugout. You know, he absolutely lives every kick and every tackle with his with his team. They're very much, you know, it's almost like a sort of 12man operation. So, yeah, you can see why they run through brick walls there. And look, Emmy Brener is playing really well. you thought that his career was was having a dip and then he plays like that tonight as well. So yea
