Kane's new Bayern deal: is the Premier League goal record now safe?

Bridget, Michael Bridge and the host debate Harry Kane's new deal at Bayern Munich running until 2029. They agree Kane is thriving in Munich and that staying there actually gives him a better shot at the Champions League than returning to England, which makes Alan Shearer's record look safe for now. Bridget also makes a strong case that Kane must win this year's Ballon d'Or.

Now Harry Kane has agreed a new deal in principle with Bayern Munich until the summer of 2029. But after breaking records galore in Germany, does that mean Alan Sheir's Premier League goalc scoring record is safe for now? Before we get into that, we're joined by Michael Bridge who is at the heart of this story. Uh Michael, I know this was your exclusive, so well done on that. Bring us up to speed with the story. What is the latest? >> Well, good morning, gentlemen. It's good to see you both on this fine Friday morning. >> You could have done your hair, Bridgie. >> Sorry, Jay. >> You could have done your hair. >> I had it cut yesterday. Anyway, here we go. Here we go. Let's talk Harry Kane. Yeah. Um, a broad agreement between um player and club. Just a few things to iron out before confirmation. But look, Harry Kane, look, we've said consistently on Sky Sports News, he's he's very happy at Bayern Munich. You know, he's he's a real family man. And you know, they love living in Munich. you know, he's he's a private man as well. He gets his privacy there and he's done incredibly well. And at the end of the season when he spoke to Vincent company, they thought if it wasn't for PSG, they probably would have gone on to win the Champions League. And I I think I agree with that. You know, they were absolutely outstanding last season. You know, he's got a great relationship with the players and been some company, you know, good, you know, you can see the goals here. I mean, he's breaking records galore, boys. and you know you know the goals he scores as well you know and you know listen to Bayern Munich director as well saying you know we you know we don't usually negotiate deals for players of this age but I'm telling you boys this is you know he might be 33 but there's still a lot more left in the tank for Harry Kane there's absolutely no doubt about it >> we know how keen he is to win a major trophy for England he's winning trophies in Germany like the Bundesliga how desperate is he to win the Champions league. >> Yeah, massively, Tom. You know, he was out there, you know, I was out in Madrid when he um when he was so close to winning the Champions League for Spurs, you know, and uh to be honest with you, I don't think he was fully fit in that final, but you know, as I say, he's not far off with Bayern Munich, you know, they're a fantastic team, but we've seen PSG, they're in another world at the moment. So, look, he'd love to win it, but let let's let's you know, we've just had an international break where he wants to win the Nations League, and you know, you've had major nations winning that. So if they he wins that, if he wins goes on to win that, that'd be brilliant for Harry Kane. But as I say, look, he's got a lot a long a lot left in the tank. He's playing well, he's fully fit, he's loving life. Obviously sad for Tottenham supporters that maybe won't see a return there. So uh but yeah, it's um things are going well for him. >> Bridget, do you know what the funny thing is? When I collected my legacy cap at um St. George's Park, um I was speaking to Harry and I said to him, "Come on, H, you got to come back to the Premier League. I want to see that record broken." And he said to me in fairness, he said, "Listen, when I first went over there, probably the thought was I'm going to stay over for here 2 3 years and then come back to the Premier League." But he said, "Being here is an unbelievable club. Leaving in Munich, he said everything is like topnotch there. The training facilities, everything. Um, and I'm glad um that he is there to be perfectly honest. I think he's got the best chance of winning the Champions League if he stays at Bayern because if he comes back to the Premier League, he's not going to go to Arsenal. And then the other club is Man City who might not even be playing in the Champions League. So at Bayern Munich, I think that that is he's in the conversation in the conversation to win the Champions League obviously like you said um with PSG, but there's no doubt about it. I always said that, you know, he's the best number nine. Um definitely the the best English number nine, but for me he's the best number nine out there right now by like easily because all of the goals he scores outside the box, inside the box, left foot, right foot, all the assists he gets like he's an unbelievable player. His technique is like you never see him scuff the ball. Like you never see him scuff the ball. He's like he's an unbelievable player and I'm again I'm privileged that you know I played against him and I get to see him play his whole career as well. Jay, I'm looking at this record here. A list of England's record goal scorers. Harry Kane 91 in 125 appearances. 91 second. Wayne Rooney 53. I mean, I'm sorry. I actually think Kane has been underappreciated over the years. He's such he's a mellow. He's a modest guy, but he's just scored 73 goals. And I'd love to see him win the Ballor. I don't really care about individual awards. I never have. But on this occasion, I'm gonna make >> if he doesn't win it, Bridgy, if he doesn't win it this year, he's never going to win it. It doesn't matter how much he scores. He should win it. There's no doubt about that. >> Find out in a few 10 days, we find out, don't we? >> I mean, listen, if he doesn't win it, then I'm going to be like, that is going to really upset me. I can tell you that right now because he should. Um, but I think when you look at him again, like you said there, Bridgie, it seems like he's getting better with age. And you know why I always say players like Kane will be able to play into their late 30s. And the reason why is because he's got football IQ. His brain works at a rapid rate compared to other players and his technique is like second to none. So that's that in itself is the reason why he's going to play longer and longer and longer and that's the reason why um Bayern Munich given another deal. >> Does that mean we might still see him in the Premier League in time then? If he's going to go on and on and on, might we see him back? Just maybe not as early as we expected, Michael. Well, look, if he if he if he sees his next buying contract out, he'll be 37. I think Harry Kane, if he doesn't get any serious injuries, touchwood. Touchwood. Hold on. Got William Civa sticker on my desk. >> He's a true Arsenal fan. I told you. I always said it. Bridget, >> why me? My son. Um I 30 He'll be 37 in 2029. If he doesn't get any injuries, I genuinely believe Harry Kane could play till 40 41. Where? I don't know. Look that, you know, he would have every MLS club looking at him to play in the in the MLS. He genuinely would love to give the NFL a go, you know, as a kicker. Um, >> he can do that part time. >> Yeah. I mean, Clyde Allen did it for an NFL franchise, Kevin Hastings. >> Yeah. So, um, you know, I might come out of retirement and try that myself. It's always about you in there. It's always about you. Um, but no, I I think he's got he's got so many options and you know, part of me was a little bit surprised about maybe staying at Bayern, but like you there was there was interest in Barcelona in the summer, but this just reaffirms what we've been saying on Sky Sports News. He loves his life in Munich and as I said before and Jay, you're you're a big family man. He loves >> they love life in Munich and I think that's very important. >> Yeah, Michael, well done. Thank you. >> Thanks, Bridgetie. >> See you guys. >> Uh, speaking about him there and you and Michael both said that he can go on for a long time. If right now you were to predict whether he's ever going to come back to the Premier League or not, do you think he would one day? >> Wonder I don't know. I think coming back to the Premier League at 37 with 37 years old >> if he sees out his contract 38 years old. I'm not sure about that. Um, if anyone could, I mean, it probably would be him. Like he said, he lives right. Um, prepares right, recovers right. You never see him, you know, kind of burning the candle at both ends. Um, so if anyone could, it would be him, but I'm not sure he would then. I think it would be the likes of, you know, the MLS or or I think it probably will be the MLS. He doesn't strike me as the kind of person that would want to go to Saudi or anywhere like that. I think he probably would go to the MLS, but again, I would love to see him come back and put some pressure on Alan Shira's record because Alan Sher loves that record. >> I was going to say, who do you think's happier at the moment? Harry Kane with a new deal or Alan Shira that >> definitely definitely Alan Sher still he's still safe for now, isn't he? >> Do you know what the funny thing is? When I speak to, you know, kids of this younger generation, they they speak about Alan Sher like he's basic. >> These kind of goals you don't see all the time. like Alan Sheir was kind of like a Harland but then he had like other things in his locker like this. There's a lot of similarities between Shar and Kane actually naturally because Shira scored all types of goals and Kane does the same thing. Um but yeah, I think Shir will be more happy that he signed his new deal with in in in Germany. >> If you were still playing and you were to choose a strike partner of Shira at his peak or Harry Kane at his peak, which is now, who would you choose? Uh, I'll go I'll go with Shira. And you don't get me wrong, I genuinely think Kane is a better player than Shira all round. And I think that he I mean he's to me England's best ever number nine. Um, but I would prefer to play with Shira because Shira will play on the shoulder of the defenders and I can drop in that hole where Kane likes to go. >> Okay, that' be a good strike partnership. You mentioned the Ballandor. You got quite animated there saying that you you'd be quite annoyed if it's not Harry Kane. Can you see it being anybody else? I mean 72 goals for club and country last season. I mean how how can you beat that really? >> You can't beat it. >> How could you be if it's not him? >> I think the only person that has beat it is Messi when he got 91 goals I think it is. But apart from that you're not beating that. And you know everyone talks about oh you got to win something. You don't have to win something. that it's an individual award, right? You can have a great season, an unbelievable season, and not win nothing still. And we've seen that in the past. Not everyone that wins a Ballandor has won a Champions League or a World Cup or a Euros. I I think that he's had a fantastic season. Um, he's scored an unbelievable amount of goals and he scored some great goals as well. Um, and I just don't understand how there is even even a conversation because, you know, people was talking about, you know, Yamal. Yes, Yamal is an unbelievable player, great talent. he's going to be special, but I don't think he had a good a season as as uh Kane Mbappe. Again, the same thing. You know, he scored goals, but I mean, there was there was rumors that he's his own club was filing a petition to get him out the club. And since he's gone there, they ain't won nothing. So, again, if we're talking about winning stuff, then he he shouldn't be in that conversation either, cuz he didn't win nothing last year. Um, and I I just feel like Kane now, he deserves it. He works extremely hard. There was there's been other times when he could have been in the conversation as well. Um but yeah, I I'll be upset if I if we don't get um Bondor. Yeah, we certainly hope he does win. We're English as well, which of course helps.
