Joining us this time around, the Sun's chief football correspondent [music] Charlie White and Ian Ladyman, football editor for the Daily Mail. Welcome to you both. They also carry the quotes from Thomas Tukul who has sent a warning to the likes of Cole Palmer that the England train is leaving without you. The Sun lead with Artetta's [music] new deal. Their headline reads the art of the deal. Uh the Sun in fact uh lead with Arteta's [music] mega deal. And look, Charlie's written about this 80 million pound. They say Prem's highest paid gaffer after 70% rise. [music] Wow. On the back page of the star, our teta net bumper deal, then vows, we've only just begun. And how about that for a mockup at the top right hand of [music] that page? Thomas the tank engine rolling without cold power. That's brilliant, isn't [music] it? That comes after two's warning. Plus, they carry the Southampton news, the great escape. The Guardian lead with Lion Messi after he bid farewell [music] to Argentina. Southampton spygate escape. Echart given suspended [music] uh ban after a fine, but FA may still appeal that. They also carry the golf news. John Ram [music] exit set to trigger mass exodus from live golf. The telegraph [music] lead with Southampton boss Ekhart escapes spygate ban. Arteta joins world elite with 80 million pound Arsenal [music] deal and Messi's clean break. Legend bows out with class unlike [music] Ronaldo. And in the mail, Echart's escape. Southampton's spygate boss [music] given six weeks suspended ban. Also, city's Anfield welcome has police on [music] red alert. Plus, Messi's farewell tainted by controversy and selfie [music] snub. Charlie Ian, really good to have you back on paper talk. Let's start with the Sun, which I read to you there at the top and Charlie's been writing about this. It is your paper after all. Guarteta's Arsenal mega deal£80 million Prem's highest paid gaffer now after 70% rise he signs till 2030 and says title is just the start Charlie this is a massive boost for Arsenal. Uh do the hierarchy deserve praise for for getting him back in on such a long-term deal like this? >> Yeah, they absolutely do. They deserve a lot of praise throughout for for sticking with Muel Artetta when it was tough, for giving him over a billion pounds uh in transfer money, but of course, you know, letting him manage and letting him develop and, you know, it's not a shock that he he signed. We're all expecting it since last season, but it's still great news for Arsenal. you know, 80 million pounds, 20 million pound a year in including bonuses, which is obviously a huge rise. Uh that sees him overtake Oliver Glasner, who is actually post Pep Guardiola. Glasnner was the highest paid uh manager. Can you believe in a in a deal 123 I think 14 million including bonuses, but but Artet has blown it out the water. Um I think Arsenal fans and the board will definitely think it's money well spent. He's there for another four years and I think it's definitely bad news for Arsenal's rivals. >> Um Ian, let me bring you into this as we go to the back page of the mirror. 20 million pound a year mega money for guns boss. The art of the deal is their main headline. And we see in modern football, don't we? Managers continuously talking about they don't get enough time particularly when times are hard. But this Arsenal hierarchy decided to stay with Arteta when times were hard and it's bore fruit for them. Yeah, I mean I was at the um Mik Arteta's opening press conference when he was appointed back in 2019. I think Charlie was probably there as well. Um sat and listened to what he said he talked about the things that he wanted to do that he needed to do. Talked about changing culture um about principles of play about the way that he thought that the club had lost its way in terms of the way it played and the way it presented itself to the world. and he's look he's he he's fulfilled every promise he made that day. He's ticked every box. He's been given brilliant support as Charlie says um by the Arsenal board and overall by the Arsenal supporters. There were some doubters along the way but the majority have stuck with him and I think what this this deal does now for Arsenal it as well as what it does for Mikuel is it gives them some level of protection because if you look at Melt Teta now he's a Premier League winning manager. um he's managed in a Champions League final only lost on on penalties. There'll be clubs around Europe, clubs in Spain. Um obviously Macau's Spanish, clubs like PSG, a club who he played for. He'll be looking at Muel as a future manager. And Arsenal Arsenal will know that. Arsenal will know that it's not um a given that Macau will want to stay there forever. At some point, he might want to go back home. What this does is it gives them a bit of a um a safety net. Um if and when somebody does make a make an approach, he's well under contract. He's now incredibly well paid and there's every reason for him to stick around. >> Of course. Um let's look at the the Telegraph. I think we just saw it there, but let's just go back to that again. That big picture of Mikuel Arteta with a smile on his face. And Arteta joins World Elite with 80 million pound Arsenal deal. And Arteta has said Charlie, it's a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people. So the question is now long term, is he will is he able to build that Arsenal dynasty? Is he able to go after that elusive Champions League trophy and, you know, win yet more league titles? How far can he go with this? >> Oh, absolutely. I I I think potentially we're we're we're now approaching um or at the start of a period of Arsenal dominance. Um, I think they could, yeah, next two, three, four years. Of course, they went so close to winning the um the Champions League last season. So, it's pretty obvious they're going to be challenges again this year and next. The team is getting better that, you know, the players in the team are all getting better that they're all being tied down to contracts, long contracts. Declin Rice will be next. And while they didn't get that striker they wanted uh in the summer, there is no doubt they've got the money to go again when they really need him. Maybe in January, maybe next summer. Arsenal are just going to get better. Arteta is definitely improving as a manager. He's he's nowhere near his peak. He's still relatively young, of course. Uh he's got a good team around him. Uh and you know, he's he's got a sensible board. Um equally let's not forget that just two months before he left for Arsenal in 2019. Pep Guardiola then he was Guadola's assistant. Guardiola sort of said he he'll be my successor and then just literally weeks later he goes to Arsenal and now of course Manchester City appears to be in a bit of a mess whereas Arsenal's incredibly stable. >> Uh what do you make of that Ian? Is it is it time that he can build a dynasty at this club? Can he win trophies and dominate as Charlie says for the next three, four years? >> Well, he can. It's very It was very very difficult. History tells us how difficult that is. We've seen um clubs um look as though they're about to do that before and haven't quite managed it, but there's certainly opportunity. Um Charlie there has just mentioned Manchester City. We don't need to um spend any time on that for the second for the minute. But other clubs, Liverpool transition, Manchester United still in transition, Chelsea transition, Tottenham transition. Um, Arsenal absolutely steady, best squad in the league by a mile. A bench every Saturday that terrifies a life life out of me just when I look at it. Um, and the confidence of doing it last year, which is massive because we know how long it took them, two, three efforts to get over the line. Now they've done it. So, the opportunity is absolutely there for them. >> Yeah. And that's a warning if any to uh rival fans and rival clubs. But Charlie, what about their own fans? How will Arsenal fans be reacting to this news? And how might the dressing room react that their boss is staying for the long term? >> Well, they'll be delighted. Say fans aren't surprised, players aren't surprised, but equally it's just confirmation, isn't it? And of course the fans love Arteta because you know Arteta you know when he arrived at the club you know let's not forget he played for the team. Um he realized that there was a disconnect between the supporters and the club and he's always played a big part in trying to get the the fans on side. I mean there was a period you know particularly during Una at the end of the Wenger era the Emirates was a you know a pretty quiet place but but Arteta got that place going and there have been times certainly two or three years ago when it's been you know brilliant last season actually I thought Emirates was a bit quiet it was a bit nervous because I think the fans could you know touch the trophy and it was agonizing for them and and and I think this season the atmosphere has picked up but Arteta has all been part of that. You know, he really believes, you know, the importance of fans and and club being together. Uh so that is why the supporters absolutely adore Arteta and they'll be delighted that he's going to be staying for the next few years. >> Okay, let's stay with the FEMA football then and go back to the uh mirror uh top right hand corner. Tul aboard or miss the train. Thomas Duke has sent a warning to the likes of Cole Palmer and Co. The England train is leaving without you, he said. Um, Ian, so what do you make of this? He's pointing this at stars like Cole Palmer, uh, Kobe Mayu, Marcus Rashford, who all pulled out of the squad due to injury and fitness concerns. He's stressing again, isn't he, the the need for them to be in camp so he's able to assess them and they're able to maximize their opportunity. >> Yeah, Charlie and I were actually with Tukul last night at Wembley when he when he actually said this. Um and he's um he he said it before in in different ways, but he's he's incredibly articulate um Thomas, especially given that he's speaking in his uh second language. He can have a a wonderful turn of phrase, and this was another one, you know, the train will leave without you. Um and he abs he absolutely means it. Um you know, we've talked a lot and we've written a lot about players who have withdrawn from the squad. Um but there's no there's no hyperbole here in terms of the way that newspaper writers and other journalists have interpreted it. Thomas Tukul absolutely does hold it against players who he thinks pull out of the squad when they could possibly be in the squad. So if you look at the ones who have withdrawn this time around, don't know if Charlie agrees with this or not, but I've actually written this for tomorrow. I think that um I think Livermento will be fine. He missed Newcastle's game. I think Marcus Rashford has got um plenty of credit in the bank. I think with England and with Tucan Rice certainly has credit in the bank with Thomas Tul played on one leg for much of the World Cup. We must remember that. Um, and I think Kobe Mayu, Cole Palmer probably do not have that credit in the bank with Thomas. And I think it's almost it's highly unlikely that they they will be in the squad um when um England convene again to play Croatia and that big game in Spain that will um finish the Nations League group stage. Thomas just doesn't buy it. He doesn't buy it if you're not there and if you're not prepared to be there when possibly you could be there. He doesn't he doesn't forget. and um and he and and he won't forget. And the other point that we were making to Thomas last night was about style of play in terms of the way that England have slowly moving through the gears admittedly against pretty modest opposition the last couple of weeks. Charlie and I were at all the games. Um I think the way England are playing now this kind of physical quick powerful athletic football not sure whether people like Phil Foden and Cole Palmer massively fit into that. the their the position is number 10 and at the moment G Bellingham is number 10. Morgan Rogers is a number 10. So um um they're not getting in as we stand at the moment. >> You agree Charlie? As we go to the back page of the star Thomas the tank engine rolling without coal power. Obviously Kobe Mayu didn't get a look in at the World Cup. Cole Palmer was left behind. Is that it for them? >> Yeah, I I agree with Ian. Yeah. Yeah. for example, Mayu, you know, he he's not there. And and Alex Scott, one of the winners of this uh although he only played, you know, once um you know, when he's fit again, he he's going to be in the squad. Manu isn't. And even, you know, players at left back Lewis Hall came and played so well. You know, Jed Spence might struggle now. You know, Reese James is always injured. You know, Alexander Arnold came back, took his opportunity. Gerald Pon is it looks to be a a first choice player. Tuka loves him. So even players like Ree James there were there were 12 players who are at the World Cup who are not in this last squad. Now of course a lot of them will come back but a few of them won't. We won't see a few of them again under Tukul I don't think. You know he is ruthless. He's already shown that before. You know, we've got the Nations League quarterfinals, the two games before that that Ian mentioned, but everything obviously is being built towards Euro 2028, and I would be surprised at this stage if we see players like Cole Palmer again, and certainly Phil Foden as well. I I don't see any way back. He seems so far out of the picture. >> Yeah, it's a super competitive squad to try and get into, uh, isn't it? Um Ian, let me come to you next because you've been writing in your paper, haven't you, about the England camp winners and losers. Give us a taste of what you've written about. >> Um yeah, I look I think that um I think it's if you look if look at the way it's gone, you can see the ones who played very very well, the ones that we know about and um Kane and Bellingham continue to just a me at the moment. Um and and Charlie's already mentioned people like Alex Scott, uh Lewis Hall, Anthony Gordon. I mean that front four is pretty much set in stone now I would say. Um the ones that I felt a little bit sorry for I would say at the moment are people like Dominic Calbert Lou. I was I was sitting there at Wembley last night thinking England are 3-0 up and the game and the game is won and Harry Kane is still on the field with 10 minutes to go and Calvin Lewin who I think got about eight minutes towards the end of the Spain game when England were chasing is still sitting on the bench and I'm thinking to myself does Thomas Tukul need Harry Kane to stay on there? Does he need another hat-tick that badly that you can't give Calbertt Lewin a bit more time to go on and maybe score a goal against tired and demoralized opposition? Um, obviously not. Jared Branthre would be another one who would fall into category James Garner, but that's only because they didn't have minutes. Um, and again, Charlie mentioned there about the ruthlessness of Thomas Tul and he absolutely is. He's he's a very pragmatic manager. all the top managers are and he doesn't do sentiment and he doesn't do things just for the sake of it. Um and you can see that in the way that he selects the team and the way that he he um he sends players on. So um you can look at people like Lewis Skelly as well who had a a wonderful camp. Elliot Anderson by the way um is just another one who's just moving to an extra level. I mean that ball that he played I think for the second goal last night for Rogers to cross first time for Kane. I was watching it earlier with with early on with my daughter again on the television. Absolutely extraordinary bit of football. Um so there's been plent there's been plenty of that. Um and I wouldn't really want to say that anyone in that camp is necessarily been a loser. The losers to go back to the original point are the ones who weren't there. >> Ian Charlie, thank you for the moment. We're going to take a quick break now. When we come back, we'll [music] be looking at more of the sports stories in the morning's papers, including this in the times. Southampton spygate boss escapes ban. [music] We'll discuss the news that Tonda Echart has been handed a suspended six-week ban. And we'll discuss car walkers quotes on [music] Manchester City. You'll never take my trophies. That's in the mirror. Welcome back to Paper Talk. Welcome back to the Suns chief football correspondent Charlie [music] Wyatt and Ian Ladyman as well from the Daily Mail. Okay, let's take you to the mirror and we're talking Manchester City again and another former player has come out to have his say. Uh, and this time it's K Walker in the top leftand corner. You'll never take my trophies, he says. Quite telling quotes from Carl Walker saying me, my fellow colleagues at Manchester City when I were there, we went through this Charlie, we experienced these nights together. You can never take what happened to us on the pitch. What's your take on his comments? I totally understand and I actually agree. Look, you ma Manchester City, you know, if they fail in their appeal, they deserve to to be punished really really harshly and I don't think anyone will have any sympathy for them. However, I I for a start they won't have their titles taken away and B I think it would be absolutely ridiculous if that happened. I know it's happened elsewhere in other countries uh but you know you you can't rewrite history to that degree. Um, and I would fully expect Carl Walker to to believe that. So, uh, yeah, we we won't see the City stripped of of the Premier League. That that that would be stupid. However, moving forward, obviously, Manchester City could be hurt quite severely. >> Uh, the Sun also covering an angle of this at the top of the screen there on the uh, Sun newspaper. City tell Stars will win. Manchester City bosses have told stars not to worry about the Prem's guilty verdict because Sporting justice is on their side. What do you think, Ian? >> Well, that's been their message all along. That's been their message publicly. That continues to be their message publicly. France Franceo talked about it last last week. Uh we believe that Pep Guardiola is due to um come to the Champions League game against PSG next week to show solidarity. He still believes that the club are innocent and they will keep saying that. they wouldn't be appealing if they didn't say that. So, they're not going to say something um publicly, one thing publicly, then another thing to their players. Why why would they? Those players need to stay motivated and focused, which is very difficult. They've got this huge game at Anfield on Sunday. And I also totally sympathize with with Kyle Walker. Um I mean, look, medal, you know, titles and medals could be taken away from players. As Charlie mentioned, it's happened in Italy before with Juventus, but I think as a player, in terms of what you feel inside, and that's what Kyle Walker is talking about. Don't think he's talking physically about somebody coming to his house and taking his medals, 15 major trophies he won with Manchester City, by the way. Um, he's talking about what he feels inside and what he feels he's achieved as a player. And I absolutely agree with him uh with that. There's not there's not, you know, in terms of a footballer, there's not been a more honest footballer in terms of the way he behaved on the field and what he gave to his various football clubs and his coun
