Can Arsenal build a legacy after Arteta's contract extension? | "He's hungry to win more"
After Arteta's extension, can Arsenal build a legacy?
The video looks at Mikel Arteta's new Arsenal contract through 2030, with David O'Leary assessing his standing at the club and their title-defence prospects. O'Leary sees Arsenal as the team to beat, with Manchester City their only real challenger, and discusses Rice, squad depth and the Leeds match. The show also touches on Arsenal's injuries and Rogers as a summer target they missed.
- Arsenal have a great chance to defend the Premier League title this season, but doing so is extremely hard — He twice tried to defend a title under a great manager and knows how hard it is; Arteta is still hungry for more.
- Arsenal are the team to beat in the Premier League, with Manchester City their only real challenger — Liverpool and Chelsea are in transition; City have a great squad, but it remains to be seen how their new situation affects them.
- Arteta's new deal is no surprise and is well deserved, and he has rare managerial power at Arsenal similar to Wenger's — He runs the club and the club wants him to stay; with a year left and the team in a strong title position, he knows his worth.
- No one will break his Arsenal record of 722 appearances — Modern players are so finely tuned that they need to be fully fit; playing that many games requires turning out when not fully fit.
- Arsenal will beat Leeds tomorrow, but it will be a very hard game — Leeds have improved immensely; the manager has a system, the players have adapted, and they work hard, are strong and do not give much away.
- Declan Rice is Arteta's best signing — His consistency from day one has been unbelievable and he is integral to Arsenal, similar to Rodri at Manchester City; his desire to play every game can make him his own worst enemy.
- Arsenal's squad depth is the strongest in the Premier League, as shown by the value of their bench — Arsenal hold the top four bench values of the season so far, and their average bench value is far above everyone else's.
- Rogers is the one who got away for Arsenal in the summer and would have been a great addition — O'Leary was disappointed that the club had to pull away from him.

Now, Mik Arteta spoke to the media for the first time today after he signed a new contract extension at Arsenal on Wednesday. The new deal will keep him at the Emirates until 2030. >> Well, extremely honored. Uh my family and I, I think we are very grateful um to continue to to enjoy this unbelievable ride that that I started almost 7 years ago. And uh and I loved um again not the outcome uh because when there are two parties and and you have to resolve a situation I said from the beginning that both the club and I wanted the same thing but I love the manner that it was handled. >> Now only Sir Alex Ferguson David Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola have successfully defended the Premier League title. I know you touched on this the last hour, but how big an opportunity do you think this season is for Mike Arteta to join that elite list? >> I think it's a great opportunity. It's very hard. I had the opportunity twice under a great manager in George Graeme and found it very very hard indeed. Um but one thing about Muel for all he's won, he's hungry to win more h and there's a great opportunity. I think some of the reasons um I think Liverpool are in transition, Chelsea the same way. I see the only opposition um to to Arsenal is Manchester City. Great squad, but what's come up now, is that going to affect them? Only time will tell in that. Um and I think, as I say, Arsenal the the team to beat. Great squad. No um no shock that Mckela signed his contract. Where else is he going to go? He runs the club. He's got the power. Not many people have that. I thought Arson Wenger would be the last one to have that type of power. I never thought I'd see again at Arsenal, but he has that. Um, contractwise, I'm sure Mikuel well knows his worth. Um, and you've got a club that wants him to stay as well. Um, great timing as well with a year left, wins the league in a great position, and I'm sure he's got what he well deserves, the right contract. >> Yeah. And if he sees out that contract, he'll have been at Arsenal for over a decade now. You still got a bit of a way to catch up with how long you were at Arsenal. You hold the record appearances for Arsenal. It's insane actually. 722. Do you think anyone is going to beat that? >> Well, I'll give you that 50 quid for saying that right straight away. So, thank you. Thank you for boosting me up there. Um, uh, I don't think so, but you records are there, you hope. Um, and it was a very hard one to do. Um, many times you had to get up and to do that or if you're going to beat that going forward now is you got to play when you're not fit. Um, I think the professional nowadays there's so many people around them that so highly tuned and they've got to be totally right. I remember waking up many Saturday mornings or whatever and thinking how can I play today and I played. And if you got to, you know, if you're going to play those amount of games, that's the attitude you got to have. >> I mean, look, look at this as well. Since the Premier League started, I mean, none of the players that are on that list are currently playing, but I mean, Ryan Giggs went to 910 appearances. >> Amazing, amazing amount. Um, phenomenal all those players and all great players with it as well for the clubs. Um, takes some doing. You have to have that drive. You have that will. Um, I came over as a young lad from Dublin and thought I'd be only last here a week or so and you made your debut. Um, and then you played 100 games and with it it went on and on and then I remember seeing the great Jordy Armstrong's record of 600 odd and 621 and I remember that day 622. Then I start thinking, I'd love to be the only Arsenal player to get into the 700s. And you did that and went on and on really. And they took a long time to sus me out. It took them 20 years before they told me to to go, but it was a great uh club to play for. It was a long time to be there, but it was fantastic. Uh it was a fantastic time. >> I mean, it is an extraordinary record. Tomorrow, and I know you're at the game at the Emirates, I'm going to call it the David Olirri Derby. the Arsenal record appearance holder against a former League United manager. The corresponding fixture last season finished Arsenal five lead United nil. We're not expecting a repeat of that one. >> You know what it was? Go to all the Arsenal games. Um it was great to go back to Ellen Road. It was great to see Eddie Gray and get a great reception from those great fans of of Leeds. Um but it was probably as good a game Arsenal have ever played. They were totally dominant. um the players they brought off and the players they were able to bring on told you what the club was about, what the squad they had. Um and that's the secret in that way. And they played very well in that playing for Arsenal. Um leadeds was always a good one for us. Managing leads against Arsenal wasn't the greatest experience ever. Um so, you know, I expect Arsenal to win tomorrow. I think it'll be a difficult game. I think Leeds have improved immensely. Fair play to the uh the coach, the manager. Last year, everybody was doubting him. He's got a system now. He's adopted his players to it. Um and they work very hard, strong and set players. Don't give much away. And I think it'll be it'll be a very hard game for Arsenal, but a game that um I think they'll win. >> Um there are reports emerging, we're talking about the Micheletta contract, but reports emerging that Declan Rice could be signing a new longerterm contract at Arsenal as well. of all the signings in the Mikl Areteta era in what in the seven years odd that he's been there where does he rank? >> I think you know I think I said earlier Mikuel has got most of the signings right hasn't got them all but you never do um but I would put him as his best signing because from day one his consistency level has been unbelievable. Um, I think with Declan, he's his worst enemy because he wants to play and play and play all the time and I don't think you're doing him those favors, but he's that committed that much and he's such an integral part of the team that um he's like the Rodri um Man City had. To me, he's he's the one Arsenal have and he's been an outstanding player from day one. Well, he actually missed the recent international fixtures of Declan Rice and they're one of many selection dilemmas for Arteta ahead of tomorrow, Dave. >> Yeah, there are a couple of injury issues for Michetetta to deal with and and Arsenal maybe suffered a little more than most in the international break. Kristoff Zullis suffered a hamstring injury with Greece. You already mentioned Declan Rice there. Martetta has said today he's been dealing with a few issues actually since coming back from the World Cup. Well, Ezri Conor was released from England duty. Another one, Kai Havvertz, he's out with a hamster injury, picked up with Germany. All those obviously alongside the long-term absence of William Civa. So, that's five first teamers for Arsenal at the moment. But this is where Arsenal will be hoping to tap into their strength in depth. Remember, this is really what they have concentrated on in the transfer window, adding quality players to their existing group. We've got the top bench values so far this season. Now, usually there is a correlation between a player's value and their quality. So, this is the cumulative value of every player named on the substitute bench. Arsenal have had the most valuable that was at Sunderland. Uh48.4 million pounds worth of talent on the bench at Sunderland. In fact, Arsenal hold the top four bench values of the season so far. And the average uh value of Arsenal's bench is way above everybody else's as well. So that just gives you an indication as to how strong they are in terms of their strength in depth. Certainly a player hoping to benefit will be Victor Yarees. He hasn't started a Premier League game yet this season but scored twice in that corresponding fixture last season. The 5nil victory over Leeds at the >> Yes. So David, so a few issues for Arteza and Arsenal and I'm guessing this current lead United team is probably a team you want to be full strength against just now. >> Yeah. Um but the squad Arsel have um no matter who you play, you know, they're all top players. Um you know, I think that the sign and that's a great stat there. The the sign of a top team or a top squad is your bench. And apart from even when Arsenal have that bench, you see some of the players that sitting up in the stand that can't get on the bench, that is how high quality it is. Um, and you know, they've built that up over time. They'll keep ticking it over. I think, you know, the the only one going forward recently in the summer that missed out on, I was very disappointed they had to pull away from him. Rogers is one that got away because I think he'd have been a great addition to that uh squad.
