Southampton have defended the stadium, defended the city against the club FROM THE ISLAND CITY who came on the road to try and take them down. JAMES BRIE SECURES ICONIC STATUS in the South Coast Army. THIS CITY A SEA OF CELEBRATION. WELL, FURTHER DOWN THE COAST, PORTOUTH WILL GO INTO HIDING. They have been beaten in this South Coast derby. Southampton with 10 men for over half the game HAVE HELD ON TO WIN THIS DAY. And what a day for Southampton. Yeah, Southampton for me with a higher quality team. Thenaz as an individual truly outstanding. They did what was necessary, but they got the lead. The camera goes off. I I've got four. I thought they could be in trouble here. But John Msinho from a Portman perspective, the goal they gave away was a shocker and then the extra man in the second half simply didn't do enough to retrieve the situation to win the Southampton deserve. Listen to this. They won't stop partying here for a long, long time. James Brie the match winner. Campra from Chandler for sent off for two yellow cards just before Halime and Tom Eckert in this week of wins for him straight off the pitch here. He thought he might have to walk out of here and he had to serve a ban. The ban suspended and Southampton have taken great joy in that and in victory today in the South Coast Army. This game was never about one man but on Tandere he's made a mistake. He's held his hands up. Plenty of contrition from him. He won't be doing that again. But he's showed in this game what a really good coach is. His coaching record at Southampton truly outstanding. You understand why they stood by him, why they wanted and needed him to stay at the club. Southampton the winners and this place is in party mood as Portsmouth are shown the door and they head back to the island city without a point. Shout out to the winners by a golden. It is Southampton Sunday on the south coast and look what it means to win the local derby. More than 21 years, Saints fans have waited for three points against their biggest rivals. And today, this team have delivered it. One goal enough in the end. Played more than 45 minutes with the numerical disadvantage, but managed to keep Pompy out for their first clean sheet of the season and more importantly three points and bragging rights in the local derby. Billy Shaw and Joey Mackov with me. Billy the sending off could have ended up costing them dearly. that 10 left on the pitch have to put in a real shift to make sure we didn't. >> Yeah, it's amazing and kept a clean sheet and then he burned it with 10 men and I think it was more to do uh with with what Portouth didn't do. They didn't have a shot on target and just didn't quite do enough in the final third about the gap was was positive for us. It was something that we was hoping for and uh it just pushed on this week. Obviously, we knew it was going to be a big game and made even harder by going down to 10 men, but we spoke all week about getting a clean sheet and and and digging in and the boys did that unbelievably today. >> First goals in this type of game are always important. Is there any better time to get your first goal of the season than in this type of game? >> Um, I don't think so. No, I think um me and Finn were practicing that in in training. I missed one earlier on in the week and he was having a go at me. So, uh thankfully it came off today. Finn, obviously you have to play 50 plus minutes with 10 men. I think you ended up playing at least three positions. How much did that tell us about your versatility? >> I can't I can't say I've played as a number nine for very long before, but there's a new experience obviously over the years you have to play in multiple positions. So I'm happy to do a job and everyone everyone worked for that win like everyone put in everything they could. um change of positions. Uh obviously the pressure was was high second half, but everyone just worked as hard as they could and we got through it. James, obviously you've have to play catch up most of this season so far with the four-point deduction. Can you sense now you've really got some momentum and you've got the others in your sights? >> Uh yeah, definitely. I think um I think he put himself in an all right position without actually being anywhere near his best the first eight, nine games of the season. So, like I said, that's a good win to start off this block of games and we'll just keep pushing now and and and keep going back. >> The wins come at a price for you as well. I don't think you're going to win any beauty competitions. How's the head? >> Uh, pounding. I'm off to get some six in a couple minutes, so we'll wrap this up. Joey, >> well, listen, it's been an amazing occasion. Well done to both of you. But Finn, exceptionally well done to you. You are the Sky Bet player of the match. Do the honors, James. Appreciate it. >> Thank you. There they go. The man who created the winning goal and the man who scored the goal that settled this South Coast derby, James Brie, writes his name into Southampton folklore with the winning goal. One goal enough and the noise is still so intense inside the stadium as he runs to the fans who chant his name and celebrates with them. No one has left. I mean, most of these red seats are still full of the home fans who do not want to miss this. Joby, we heard from Tre Echo before the game when he spoke to us that he said he wanted to move on and focus on the football. How big a win was this for for him? >> Yeah, this is it today, Jules. This is the line in the sand and the moment that I think the whole football club, not just Tera, can move forward. And we can't forget for everything that happened. These fans, those players, they were the ones who really suffered. They had their opportunity taken away from them. So, they've had to get themselves going again this season, come back, reset, and refocus. And I think in terms of going into today, it was all a little bit of a we need to start the season well. Hopefully, we'll see what happens with the manager. But coming to the match today, there was a different feel, different energy. I thought they brought that into the game and I think this could be a real big victory in terms of them really kicking on now this season. I think with any anything any bad energy around the club if you win football matches it it it makes it a lot better. So like Joby says today it's been a long way after the international break um against your local rivals and to to do it as they've done it as well today with 10 men like like you say it'll give them a lot of confidence going forward. >> Yeah and young Cameron Bragg who he saw when he was sent off in the first half local lad big Saints fan was devastated. He'll be the most relieved young man in Southampton worthy today. Yeah, because it's literally, you know, such a horrible position when you have been sent off and then you're in there hoping, praying that the boys can dig you out of a bit of a hole and none more so than him. Obviously, young boys obviously come through the system and he looked devastated. So, well done to the other lads for getting themselves through it and and digging out a result. So, it didn't end up being the key moment in the game. >> He'll learn a lot from that as well though. that it's probably a little bit of inexperience early in his career, but he will learn a lot from that today um in that occasion as well where if he's in that moment again, he'll remember this today and he'll he'll hopefully come through it next time. It was 2004 the last time Southampton picks up three points against Portsmouth in this derby. It's great when you win it, but look at those faces. It's horrible when you lose it. and Portsmouth suffering defeat in the backyard of their biggest rivals
