Gentlemen, the Ballon d’Or is in a month’s time. It’s very close, and there’s a lot of suspense. We’ll start with you. So, Ousmane, as the reigning champion, who would you vote for this year at the Ballon d’Or? If you could vote? Ousmane? I hope a Parisian will win the Ballon d’Or – especially as he’s had an incredible season with Paris Saint-Germain. He’s been decisive in all the big matches. No, honestly, he has. He’s had a brilliant season. We’re hoping it’ll be him or me. And who would you vote for this season? I think I’d want it to be him because the way he plays and helps the team, the way he leads the team – it’s really important for us – and the way he’s incredible; we’re just really happy to have him in the team and to watch him. It’s like enjoying Ousmane. If you had to pick one quality from his game, what would you choose? A It’s difficult because he has so many qualities. That said, as I mentioned in another interview, I think it’s his shooting, because as we saw last season, he scored some really brilliant goals – goals, sorry. No, actually, he’s got a bit of everything: his dribbling, the way he helps the team in attack or defence – a bit of everything. And if you had to pick one moment from last season when he really impressed you? The Bayern match – that was the biggest game, I think, last season – and there he was, scoring the first goal which… He got us right back into the game. No, actually, it was his entire performance across the two-legged tie. It was… it was incredible. And the chemistry between the two of you on the pitch – can you describe it to us, explain it? How does it feel? In what way is it easy to play with Grisha? Well, it’s great. Off the pitch, we get on really well, and on the pitch it’s easy with a player of his calibre. We saw that when he was playing for Napoli. I knew him from before because I used to play Football Manager, so I knew him when he was at Rubin Kazan. Yeah, absolutely. But no, no, he’s an incredible player. We saw that in Naples and here at Paris Saint-Germain too. He’s been with us for a year and a half now; he’s been doing incredible things and our understanding has come naturally – it just happened that way. And if you had to pick just one quality from Ousmane’s game, what would it be? Oh my god, he’s got so many qualities. I don’t know, maybe the way he plays with the ball, the way he accelerates with it – like when he starts running with the ball, it’s impossible to catch him – and he’s got so many qualities it’s hard to pick just one. Maybe you think you’d like to pick out another one, but it’s hard to choose. But I think he’s… he doesn’t have just one thing you can single out because he’s just full of, full of quality. Yes, that must be it. Full of quality. And if you had to pick one moment from last season when Ousmane impressed you, which one would it be? I think every time he does something, I’m impressed – I find myself thinking, ‘How is he doing this? ’ – but for me, the most important thing he did for the team It was the penalties against Arsenal, because of the confidence you have in him in the Champions League final. He takes the ball and just scores without any hesitation or anything like that – that’s just how he is. That’s why he’s the Ballon d’Or winner, and I think it’s incredible, but of course the way he scored against Marcel in the Premier League. It was an incredible goal. I was on the bench and I was like, ‘Wow.’ It’s like that with every goal he scores. It’s incredible – how do you even explain it? You have a very good rapport on the pitch. How would you describe it? I think we’ll have… We’re very understanding with each other, even off the football pitch and on the beach, and it’s really easy to understand the way he plays football because he’s always there for you, wherever you are. You know that if you make just one run, he can find you with the ball wherever you are, and you’re suddenly one-on-one thanks to his quality. It really makes sense to be ready at all times. I think that’s why he has that quality. If, if, if Ousmane wins the Ballon d’Or again… What would you say to him? I’d tell him the same thing I said the first time he won the Ballon d’Or. I told him, ‘You know why I came to PSG? It’s all down to my wife and me,’ and I told him, ‘It’s because of you – one Ballon d’Or and the Champions League,’ and I ’ll tell him the same thing. And you? And you, Ousmane, what would you say to him? I’d be very happy because he deserves it too. The season he’s had has been exceptional and, for me, he’s the best player in the world. Ah yes, that’s why he’d deserve to be… He deserves to be Ballon d’Or.It’s quite rare not to call on people to vote for you in a Ballon d’Or election. It’s a testament to the team spirit at Paris Saint-Germain, to that very collective mindset that’s been evident for the past two years. Yes, of course. Besides, the manager reminds us every day that we must prioritise the team rather than thinking of ourselves. That’s only natural. Personally, it’s not something I like to highlight. It’s difficult to put yourself forward. So no, it comes naturally. And that’s it. The most important thing, as I said, is the moments we share with our team-mates on the pitch, the moments of joy too. When you win trophies, who do you celebrate with? Your loved ones, and the whole Paris Saint-Germain club too. Those are the best moments. I think that over the last two years, on 1 June and 2 June, we’ve seen that everything in Paris is closed. And when you… When we look round the… On the bus, or when we go to the Parc des Princes and are celebrated with all the supporters, all our loved ones. That’s what makes us most proud. If you’re not complaining about the Ballon d’Or for yourself. Is it a way to keep that team spirit alive? Yeah, I think personally, I know who the best players are – my friends – and I think we don’t need to say anything because there are people who want it and there are people who decide it, and we just carry on as we are. We just want to train hard, and I think we’re just being ourselves. You know, we don’t want to change anything because of our successful career or the season. We just want to stay the same, and that’s what I love about him because his personality is really different from everyone else’s. He just stays the same, and he’s a role model for me. So I want to set a good example and I keep quiet. When you look at the whole season, seeing how we’ve played, you know he’s one of the best, if not the best in the world. We’ve seen his quality in Champions League matches – in a semi-final, a quarter-final or a final. We’ve seen everything he’s done. Do you need to… Me? Not really. No need to talk. We’ll leave it to the votes. Finally, if you win the Ballon d’Or, do you already know where you’ll put it at home? I don’t know. I don’t think about that. I knowit’s a possibility for you. And maybe I’ll give it to my kids to play with. Ousmane, you said yours was in your living room, that you still look at it quite often. What do you think to yourself when you come across it again? Oh no, it’s a sense of pride. It’s next to the telly, so I see it every time. But no, it’s pride – it’s an incredible trophy. And I remember that evening with all my loved ones, all my friends and everyone else who sent me messages. It was a special evening. How has it changed your life? I wouldn’t say it’s changed my life. But it’s true that the way other people see you does change a bit too. But no, personally, I’ve stayed focused; I’ve always remained the same person. I haven’t forgotten where I come from either. I try to stay true to myself, really. And you’re still one of the favourites for this year’s Ballon d’Or, aren’t you ? I try to perform well. I’ve always been told that when you win the Ballon d’Or, it’s difficult to be in the running the following year as well. But no, I’m trying to perform well. But as I said, the most important thing was the victories with Paris Saint-Germain. Staying focused on that, and individual honours come afterwards. If I try again, in the Champions League this season, you’ve been decisive in every big game, so you must be one of the favourites for the Ballon d’Or. Do you? As I’ve said many times, there are truly extraordinary players in contention, and it’s a real honour to be among them in this race. It’s always a pleasure, but as I’ve often said, I want to stay just as hungry as ever, and winning more trophies with Paris Saint-Germain is what matters most to us. Ousmane, just a word more on the Ballon d’Or. You do realise, though, that there’s only one Frenchman who’s won it more than once. More than once. That’s Michel Platini, who won it three times. If you were to win it… That’s huge! And for you, it would mean that if you were to win it again, that would make it two. You’d overtake Kopa, Zidane, Papin and Benzema. It would certainly be a major event to win it twice in a row. Yes, it’s a big deal. But, as I said, I’m staying focused and calm. There you go, I’m really at ease. As for the voting, we’ll just leave that to it. There’s no need to talk about it. OK, so good luck. Good luck for the Ballon d’Or. Thank you.Thank you.
