I MARCA
David Raya on Spain's goalkeeper debate and the belief that the World Cup was destined for Spain
David Raya addresses the debate over Spain's goalkeeper spot, stressing that the coach decides and the team comes before individuals, with players expected to accept their roles. He then reflects on a World Cup run that moved from early doubts to a knockout-stage surge, arguing that the France match made the title feel destined for Spain.
- The final call in Spain's goalkeeper debate belongs to the coach, with the country and team coming before individuals, and every Spanish goalkeeper is pushing hard to make that choice difficult — The debate reaches the players, but the coach has the final say and the keepers spend the whole year working for the chance to represent their country.
- Players cannot decide whether they play; they must accept their role and help the group, because Spain has world-class quality in every position and not everyone can play — The squad is deep and very united, so outside noise does not really affect them.
- The coach does not owe every player an explanation for why he plays or does not play; he only has to decide for the good of the group — Explaining every selection to every player would be unhealthy for both the coach and the squad.
- This Spain is the best national team in the world, and its unity as a family matters more than anything else — The group gets along very well, there is never a bad atmosphere, and that is what counts.
- A World Cup is judged by how it ends, not how it starts; missing chances early created outside doubts, but wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay restored confidence — Spain could have scored five or six in the opener but the ball would not go in, and in 2010 they also started by losing before winning the tournament.
- From the Uruguay match and the start of the knockout rounds, Spain began to show its dominance and the team kept improving — The win over Uruguay took them into the knockout phase, and from there Spain's control of matches became visible.
- The France match was the turning point; the final had to belong to Spain, and destiny was written for Spain to win the World Cup — Spain produced a huge collective performance against France, and after all their work and a tough knockout path similar to the Euros, the title felt inevitable.
