Hello everybody. Welcome to San I'm Lorenzo Bettoni joined by John Carlo Raldi to examine interventus. It was another fantastic delalia. I would say Junka and the Derby Ital make us talking not just tonight but we make us talk for a long time during the next couple of uh weeks because so many things happened besides the goal. There was a controversial red card that infuriated Juventus at the end of the first half and even at the end of the game there was a lot of uh discussion even Luchos Pali didn't talk to the press but uh Dian Kumoli did it instead. So there's tension there was a great game overall. What was your view on the game? Yeah, I was thinking at halfime how much there was enough by Halime to talk for to talk for hours about really, you know, there were there were great pieces of football. There was definitely controversial decisions, one in particular. Um and you know it it was a bit um it was a bit difficult but it you know not to feel even for myself to feel sorry for Juventus by the end of that game because I thought with 10 men unjustly really for most of the game they got themselves back into it only to only to lose in the in the very last stages. So, you know, I think I think Juventus came out of it with quite a lot of credit for the way they battled, how how hard they tried. I think Andrea Kambazo came out of it with a lot of credit as the first player ever to score at both ends in a in a derby ditalia. So, you know, it was it was very entertaining. But I think um as I see a message coming into us, I think if you were a Juventus fan, you would you would feel pretty hard done by at the end of that game. Sorry, John. Got a little connection issue here. >> Um, still a lot of people as you can imagine here around just the way fun walking outside the gates pretty much naked supporting inter. Uh, it's a night we remember. Yeah, you were talking about this message. Um, of course we are going to talk about this penalty co because in a way it ruined the game because of course uh we saw a match in the second half that we wouldn't have witnessed uh if it wasn't for that direct card because Juventus just start deep and hope not to concede any goal. In the end they conceded two more in the second half after uh the opener which as you said was an ongoal from from Andrea Kambazo with participation I would say from Mikuel de Gregory who was pretty slow in reacting to that deflected shot. Uh but you know I mean the the incredible thing uh about V nowadays is how strange and strict the protocol is. I mean they go and check a penalty for a step on foot that is very light. Uh I mean any step on foot you can think of there are plenty of examples this season. And then uh the protocol doesn't allow you to go and check that sort of mistake for a second yellow card for a gamechanging episode because uh just the protocol doesn't allow it. If it was a red card, he could have gone to to have a bar check, but given that it's a second yellow card leading even leading to a to a red card, it it can be checked by the AR. And I think it's it's it's pretty mad because it in the end of the g at the end of the day it's it's a gamechanging moment. It's it's a decision that changes the game and it's clearly a wrong decision because there was no contact between uh Kulu and Bastoni. >> Yeah. No, it was I mean it was I suppose it was very clever by Bastoni. The the dynamic was as if you know it there would be contact. It looked like there should be contact, but clearly on replays there was a slight touch of his arm. No contact with the legs. Certainly not a a yellow card offense. And indeed, I mean, some people suggested, and I don't think they're entirely wrong, that if it had gone to V, he might have been booked for the simulation and he was already on a yellow card, so he could have gone off, you know, which would have turned the game the other way. I mean, in the end, I think I think that neither should have happened really. I didn't think it was very edifying. His celebration of getting someone sent off was I mean, yes, it it helped to win the game ultimately, but it was a bit unsavory to see someone quite so excited [clears throat] about um you know, conning the referee ultimately because that's what he that's what he did. That's what he achieved. And you know, I think in Italy often it's seen as for beatitz. Yeah. It's seen as, you know, being being clever. And it did ultimately play a big part, I think, in helping enter to win the game. But you're right, it did it spoiled it a bit as a spectacle. Although it was still to be honest a great game but it would have I think it could have been potentially an even better game because Juventus would have been in a position to attack more rather than it became at times a game of attack versus defense really you know and that was that was disappointing because you know it had all the potential to be two sides attacking each other for the for the whole game. So yeah, it it does raise a question of I mean I don't know because in the end you have to draw a line somewhere V has to stop at some points but equally you're right there are things sort of minor details of a game really that it does stop and then something like this that had a big impact on the game that it doesn't stop and so you know it's definitely something that that needs to be talked about whether it's whether it is ultimately it leads to a rule will change. I don't know. But, you know, it's certainly something to look at because we're getting so many of these handball penalties almost every every game now nearly [clears throat] as a handball penalty. And and yet this was a decision that, you know, was very consequential to the game. But it because of the rules, because of that tight um stipulation of what it can and cannot look at, it couldn't look at that. And so, you know, there was no way of um overruling what was quite a quite a clear error. Um and TV footage showed that. So, you know, it's it's definitely is a big talking point. As I say, if you're a Juventino, you'd be raging. If you're an Interista, maybe you'd be laughing up your sleeve, I suppose. And and as you said, it's not um I mean, we're not saying it was an easy call because I was in the press box and the first thing that I thought when I when I saw Bastoni going down is this is the second yellow cuz it's clear because the dynamics of the I mean of the of the incident makes you think that Kulu actually touched Baston in his leg and uh it led to a second it will lead to a second yellow card. Then you watch the replay and you understand that it was exactly not the case. And this is why V should be used. And again the problem with protocols, the problem with uh he having uh certain incidents where players know you are going to check V if something happens like with a handball, like with a step on foot, they know. And so whenever there is even a small touch, they know that the referee has to go and check. In these situations, perhaps even Bastoni knew that in in in the event of a second yellow card. Uh he wouldn't have gone and check if there actually was uh a second yellow because again the protocol doesn't allow it. But um I don't know what happens honestly. Uh I mean I watch a little bit of foreign football but not too much. But in Italy, the V situation is getting out of control because really there are complaints every week. Uh there are controversial incidents every week and the feeling is that VAR is being used not to help the referee but uh to create even more confusion and this is something that has to stop. >> Yeah, definitely. I think it spoils games. I mean I I believe I mean one thing I think that could help would be that if it takes more than you know a minute to decide it can't be a clear and obvious error. I I think if at the moment there should be a there should be a time clock on it really I think that that says you know this is this is as long as you get and if it takes longer than that I think stick with the onfield decision. I mean, it's not perfect, but equally it gets rid of, you know, you're you're now running into sometimes 3, four, 5 minutes to to make a decision. And how can that possibly be a clear a clear error? But it is tying itself in knots. I mean, it's not surprising because Italy is the land of controversy really. There there's nothing people like more than um falling out on a Monday morning in the bar discussing these things. But it's it's added a whole new layer to that really. I think it's given, you know, effectively it's given a whole new set of decisions. I mean, they were already upset with what the referee did, but now they can be upset with what VA did as well because it's often making, you know, very subjective decisions. It's not consistent in what it intervenes on. And that's just going to fuel even more um conspiracy theories really, you know. I mean, that's the that's the trouble. I mean, the only thing I would say is usually it's um Inter fans thinking that Juventus are getting the decisions in their favor. Well, here here was one where that didn't happen. So maybe, you know, if they want to freeze frame it and, you know, retweet it five billion times, they can they can show I'm sure probably somebody has. There'll be somebody out there that's got a picture that shows as if Kulu sort of karate kicked um Baston, but the reality is different as I see and and these things, you know, I think it it's human to make mistakes, but we're adding in as an extra layer of mistake and controversy with with VR that I don't think, you know, certainly, you know, I'm live in the UK, it isn't it isn't loved VR by any stretch of the imagination in the UK, but it doesn't lead to the level of [clears throat] um controversy, the level of debate that there is in Italy. But as I say at the outset, that is almost in Italian DNA to to fall out over football and decisions. So, you know, I don't think whether you have VR or you don't have VR, I think Italians will probably always do that. >> Yeah. The thing in Italy is being overused. I mean they really use it for every single touch for every single thing. I like it much more. For example, here at Sans when in lost to Liverpool the way that the penalty kick was given to Liverpool was an Italian let me say use a V because it was used for a small incident that uh that wasn't even a a penalty kick in the end. So uh that was a strange call but I would like to see VA as you said use just for clear and obvious mistakes and uh just to and uh on this matter we reiterate that at the end of the game Spaliti didn't talk uh to the media didn't talk to the press but um Kumoli and Kellini did instead I think there are a few pictures and videos going online all happened pretty quickly so I didn't have uh all the time to check before coming hero line. But I think there there's also a couple of pictures of um Komoli being pretty unhappy with um with the inter stuff and I mean complaining here at Sans. Uh let's talk about the game. Let's talk about football junk. So I'm posting uh who was your man of the match. I picked three different men of the match in my player ratings. Two for in and one for Juventus. The one for Juventus, it's been pretty much the same over the last few weeks and it's been West Mckenni >> and for Inter I picked Zelinski and DeMarco. Now we go through everything. We go through the top and flop. Uh how about you? Who you feel was the best player on the field? You can pick more than one cuz I did. >> Thank you. Thank you. Well, I mean, yeah, I' I'd agree. But I mean DeMarco has become, you know, the king of the assist. So it was a that >> 13 I think in this season. 13. >> It's crazy. I mean he's going to beat I mean I think the thing is I don't know how far back cuz it wasn't a thing when I was when I was young many many years ago. It wasn't a a stat that was that was really kept. So, you know, they were probably where, you know, I imagine Jan Carlo Antonio in a season maybe had, you know, more assists, but in recent times, I think the best is 16 in a season. So, he he he's on course to absolutely smash that. And he had he had a very good game. I actually thought um D Gregorio in the Juventus goal, apart from the first um the first goal, had a very good game as well. and and I would say Locatelli as well who had a had a really good game for Juventus. I mean he got the goal that it looked like that was going to get them an improbable point out of the game. Yes, he did um he did get beaten for the for the final goal. I mean and that was a beautiful strike from Zelinski to to score the winner. It was a a goal worthy of winning um any game really. But you know I did feel some sympathy. I'm not a huge Locatelli fan, but I think he has stepped up recently for Juventus. And you know, he had stepped up there and he was a bit unlucky. He did try to dive into to stop that one. So, you know, I would say those were probably um my players of the match and I I love um Posito. didn't play long enough to be in the contention for man of the match but when he came on I thought he gave everything and that the header was um absolutely outstand great assist but cracking header as well and you know as a as a fan of the Italian national team as well I think you know it really is quite he's a very exciting prospect because he's good he's young and he's playing for one of Italy's top teams which is which is quite unusual. So, you know, there were there were a lot of good performance and you know, you're right to mention Weston McKenna because he's a player that I'll be honest, I didn't have a lot of time for. I didn't think I thought he was just very average at a lot of things, but he's actually under Spaleti. He's become, you know, Mr. Do everything. And his timing of runs into the box has become incredible really, you know, and he is definitely an added value. And when you consider that he was a player that you know seemed surplus to requirements, it was as if they wanted rid of him and he only really hung around and event he's made himself irreplaceable almost for Juventus which is you know that's that's quite an achievement. So yeah, no I I think both teams came out of it with with credit really actually even though Juventus lost. I thought there were a number of um very creditable performances and and Gambiao in his own way to to have such a set back so early on to then come back and score at the other end. And it was almost a mirror image really of the goal because because it was Luis Enrique that shot and it came off Kambazo, but then Kambazo beat Luis Enrique to the ball. He was sleeping. He was sleeping. You know, that was a some bad defending, but he took advantage of it to to score at the other end. And that's, you know, he's been, I think, quite criticized um by UV fans recently. So it would be, you know, the game could have ended very badly for him very differently, but he actually showed a lot of character, I think, to to come back and score at the at the other end. So I mean, I've mentioned just about every player on the pitch really, but you know, [laughter] they were they were definitely Well, you know, they were definitely >> We enjoyed the game. We enjoyed the game. We like the game. >> Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. Know, the game was the game was a seven and a half out of 10. if it if the you know the sending off I think if that hadn't happened it could have been an eight and a half nine out of 10 kind of game because it just had a good it had a good tempo it had a good um you know there were some lovely football moves in it there was some good goals as I say just that that decision kind of overshadows everything a wee bit >> well you know last interview at was a 44 draw with Thago Mota then we got a 43 Juventus Sweden in September. Uh we got a 3-2 win tonight. So Juventus, it used to be very I mean it's always been controversial. It's always been exciting, but it it wasn't necessarily always about scoring goals and playing attacking football, but in the last few years, it really has become probably the best the best game you can watch. probably the best game you can watch in Italy because uh the rivalry, the I mean anything really, everything that this game is able to to offer. Uh it it really is exciting. Uh tonight I you know when when you when you do player ratings during a game because we need to you know post the player ratings like 10 15 minutes after the final whistle. So necessarily you need to write while the game is ongoing. And maybe when you think about the player ratings the following day you're like yeah that player maybe deserve a little bit more a little bit less. Probably Zelinski just for the goal uh deserved a a little higher than than anyone else. I saw a crazy stat from Zelinski. I think he got like 97% passing accuracy. like he just missed three passes, three or four passes in the whole game, which is incredible for a central midfielder because of course he touches the ball so many times and he makes so many passes that having this consistency this consistency is very very difficult. uh Demarco as well had like 90% passing accuracy in the opposing half which is I mean big big thing very big thing and you spoke about assist before I mean back in the days there were all these stats sorry there were all these stats all so in depth about uh all the players what's impressive about the Marco of course he takes penalty k um corner kicks but we're talking about the left back having uh 13 assists in Syria this season and uh hopefully he can provide like two or three in March, end of March when he plays with Yuri, that would be helpful. >> Yeah, definitely that would be great if he can if he can do that, you know. I mean, he has had his problems with the national team defensively. I think that's the that's the concern. But there's no doubt going forward I think he's one of the best fullback wing backs in in the game at the moment. You know, he just has um a lovely delivery as he as he gave for the for the goal. I think you're getting a bit of a bit of excitement outside the sans there. But um yeah, no, it's he's definitely an outstanding outstanding wing back going forward. There are you know I think as with all these things sometimes what you get going forward you can lose going backward. It's been difficult for you know in [clears throat] I think that partnership him on one side and Denzel Dumpries on the other is is one of the best certainly in Italy possibly in Europe you know so they they've definitely missed him. I believe he's nearly back to fitness and that would make a big a big difference to enter to have, you know, the pair of them. They're very different, but they both offer amazing attacking options down the down the flanks as well. But but Demarco, yeah, that would be great if he could be part of the Italy lineup and you know delivering those pinpoint crosses possibly to Posito or you know to to Mo Keen to Reeui whoever happens to be I think any striker out and out striker loves that those kind of deliveries are just just perfect you know he whips the ball in better than better [clears throat] than many wingers do you know so That's um that's a a thing that you know for from a an Italian standpoint you have to hope that that continues for at least another couple of months. >> And you know with PO it's uh I mean back in the days back in the 90s it was different because Milan had people in Zagi or maybe Juventus had people in Zagi depending on when you watch football. Uh Christian Derry used to play for Inter Milan, Juventus. There were so many good Italian strikers playing in all the top Syria clubs. Pilpier to course I mean now it's different and the vibes that PS posito gives I think it's pretty exciting for all the Italian fans, not just the inter fans. Of course for inter fans it's even more special because he's a product of the clubs academy because I mean he returned af
