1982 World Cup Outside-the-Box Goals Compilation: Commentators on Long-Range Strikes, Goalkeeping Errors and Key Goals
This video compiles outside-the-box goals from the 1982 World Cup, linked by original match commentary. The commentators praise Brazil's attacking revival, Scotland's free-kick routine, and key goals for Poland and Italy, while criticising a goalkeeping rush-out and warning that Brazil's defensive error could be costly.
- Brazil are on the way back — Sócrates found the angle for a magnificent goal, and the pace of the drop beat the goalkeeper.
- Scotland's free-kick routine was right, not a mistake — At first it looked wrong, but it was clearly a routine worked on in training, and John Robertson curled it to perfection.
- Austria owe a great deal to Krankl — Krankl scored the second goal, which is why Austria owes him so much.
- The goalkeeper should not have rushed out and gifted Lato an empty net — Cover was coming across, so there was no need for the goalkeeper to charge out, and Lato slotted into the empty net.
- Souness's goal may have come too late — It brought Scotland back to life, but only 3.5 minutes remained, and it would have been better if it had come at 1-1.
- The goalkeeper should not be blamed too much — The free kick was beautifully bent and flighted, and the goalkeeper was already too late.
- Brazil's defensive error could prove very costly — Traverso played a superb ball and Rossi scored again, making Brazil pay.
- Brazil's dreams live on after Falcão equalised — Falcão capitalised on the space, worked the angle and fired in a powerful shot to make it 2-2.
- There must be doubts about French goalkeeper Castaneda — Kupcewicz curled the free kick in beautifully, again raising questions about the French goalkeeper as Poland made it 3-1.
- Marco Tardelli's goal may have secured the World Cup for Italy — He sent a wonderful strike goalwards while falling backwards, and it may be the goal that secures the World Cup for Italy.
Settle in for some screamers! Socrates, Tardelli and Passarella feature in this classic long-distance goals compilation. Back it off then for a moment. Here's Gavrilov. Bestanov. Blocking Júnior to him. Valderrama, Falcão. Oh, that's not a BAD TRY. FOND MEMORIES OF FéLIX. >> [cheering] >> THE GOALKEEPER OF THAT GREAT side of the '70s who was prone to error. Valdir Peres totally surprised by that. And yet Falcão hit one before. He's struck that one. It bounced in front of the goalkeeper who didn't get his body behind it. Bestanov. Zlatko Vujović. Sócrates. Found the angle! WHAT A BEAUTY! MAGNIFICENT GOAL. >> [cheering] >> Look how he found the angle. >> [cheering] >> And it was the pace of the drop that beat the goalkeeper. Lovely goal. >> [cheering] >> One to be saluted, one to be remembered. A one that suggests that Brazil are on the way back. Sócrates, Júnior. Won by Baltacha but only to find Isidoro. Falcão lets it go. Éder. Oh, what a Goalkeeper never saw it. 2 minutes left. And the Brazilians take the lead. Never saw it, the goalkeeper. Beaten for pace, spin, and everything. Müller finding Mark Lawrenson. Beto Cas. Tries the long shot and what a goal. 23 minutes gone and Beto Cas makes it 3-0. He just burst through. He had men wide to his right and left but decided on the shot and really a perfect drive from about 20 yards. >> That's the sort of thing that Scotland cannot afford and here's another break on. He's onside. What a chance here for Woodcock to make a name for himself. AND WHAT A NAME HE'S MADE. WELL, Scotland have been caught absolutely cold. No wonder the New Zealand bench is up. >> Several options here. Souness and Robertson. And Frank Gray. Have they all got it wrong? Or did they? No, they didn't. They got it right. Well, that's brought the smile back to the face of Scotland. I thought they'd got it wrong. It was obviously one that worked in training and John Robertson curled it to absolute perfection. >> And Bannon. Here's Bannon. A goal. DALGLISH BEATEN BY THE SQUAD. >> ANTONIONI. CONTI. >> OH, he's turning well. Conti with a goal. Conti, the first for Italy, the first for Group 1. That was a lovely turn there. The man dived in. Terrific shot. >> Cubillas. Now Diaz, as you suggested. >> [screaming] [screaming] >> Gremio free. Kubaski alongside him. Breitner's forward. And Rummenigge tries the shot. OH, GREAT FASTER FOR THE GOALKEEPER. MARIO KEMPES and Rummenigge puts Germany in front. But 8 and 1/2 minutes >> [screaming] [screaming] >> Hintermaier moving to his right, Krankl away to his left. And it's Krankl he goes for. And there's the drive and there's the second goal AND THAT IS WHY AUSTRIA owes so much to Krankl, Hans Krankl. Still they have to retreat. And it's Jen Lienen. Right on cue. Bernard Dietz with the left foot. Rubén will have to go for this, but it's away by Dzuba. Boniek picks on Lato. And out is the goalkeeper and it's in the back of the net. That's a class goal from Lato. The invitation was there when the goalkeeper came right out. El Loco they call him and you can see exactly why. But nice play between Boniak and Lato. But what was the goalkeeper thinking about? I mean Lato did well when he got onto the ball and it was breaking through. But there was cover players coming round and there was no need for the goalkeeper to come charging in. He comes right out of his picture and Lato says, "Thanks very much." and slots it in the empty net. They'll fight to the end. But they've got only 3 and 1/2 minutes in which to do something about it. Here's Souness. Does well to get into that position and Souness scores. He's brought the game back to life. But I wonder if it's too late. Souness is first ever goal for Scotland. It couldn't have come at a better time. Good low drive wide of Def Ayres' right hand. But if only, if only that had come when the score had been at 1-1. Souness threading his way through, hitting it low, in off the post. Gets the cross in well, Bertoni thwarted by Havel. And here's Ogilvie. Bertoni for Argentina. Try the shot. And what a goal from Daniel Bertoni. With just 8 minutes gone of this second half. Marvelous work by Bertoni. Past one man, past two, past the same man again. Here comes the shot, far post, and Luis Mora no chance in the Salvador goal. Daniel Bertoni makes it Argentina two, Hungary nil, El Salvador nil. >> In the spine from players like Jorginho who's standing over the ball to know that they're not a one-man band in dead-ball situations. No more need be said. Except perhaps once again to question Concilio's goalkeeping. Beautifully bent, beautifully flighted. Concilio too late. I don't think one can say too much against the goalkeeper. It was a magnificent free kick. Well worth seeing again. That's perfection. Lovely cross that second, wasn't it? Uh Serginho. HERE'S DIAZ. OH, THAT'S A GREAT GOAL. IT'S NO MORE THAN A CONSOLATION. But if you are going to say goodbye, that's one way to do it. Fabio has shot with the outside of the foot, and found out Perez is beaten. Nothing he could do about that one from Ramon Diaz. What a superb goal that was, Gary. But I think good control. Defenders have thought they've done it all. Pat James probably thought his angle was right and adversely now for Thailand out the competition. But I think we should pay tribute to the guy at the back Traverso there for a bit of cool defensive work and then a superb ball up the middle up the field to Rush too. >> Two minutes of the second half gone and a goal from Rush too. >> Leandro A superb ball by Traverso and Rossi scores. HE SCORES AGAIN. A DEFENSIVE ERROR BY BRAZIL AND HOW COSTLY IT MIGHT PROVE TO BE. >> JUNIOR Falcao But there's space for HIM WHICH HE CAPITALIZES ON QUITE SUPERBLY. FALCAO TIES IT UP AT TWO APIECE AND BRAZIL'S DREAMS live on. Socrates finding him in space. He worked the angle to Gore-Ahli out of the picture and fired it with a power beating Dinosoff. >> Unlucky tackle but he's done well. Ricardo trying to fight it as well. Diana Girard Girard winning only his third cap for the French tonight opens the scoring. 12 minutes gone and typical of the French prepared to shoot from any range. A little bit of help from the post and France take the lead. >> So Gonzalo and Kochevich over the kick. Kochevich who drives it in and what A SPLENDID GOAL. HE'S been threatening to do that for the whole of the World Cup. So good from free kicks. Usually drives them. This time he placed it. And Kupcewicz gives the Poles a dream start to the second half. And curled that round beautifully. So again, you have to have doubts about Castaneda, the French goalkeeper. But Kupcewicz makes it Poland three, France one. >> [cheering] >> out of defense. This is Conti. Shireur has continued his run. And Shireur has it now. Bergomi Shireur waiting for support. Picks out Marco Tardelli. >> [cheering] >> WHAT A GOAL! WHAT A GOAL! And it may be the goal that SECURES THE WORLD CUP for Italy. The octogenarian president on his feet. In tune with his nation. Tardelli was falling backwards as he sent the shot goalwards. A wonderful wonderful strike from Marco Tardelli.
