Switzerland v Canada Clash For Top Spot | 2026 World Cup EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS
Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 to top Group B and reach the knockout stage
This is the extended highlights of Switzerland v Canada at the 2026 World Cup. Switzerland scored twice early in the second half through Vargas and Johan Manzambi, while substitute Promise David pulled one back with his first touch but Canada could not equalise. Switzerland won 2-1, topped Group B, and advanced to the knockout stage, with Canada finishing second.
- Switzerland are a smart and experienced opponent who know how to handle the World Cup stage — They are at their sixth consecutive World Cup and have reached the knockout stage in each of the last three editions.
- The offside call looked correct because the attacker started his run a little too early — He only needed to delay his run slightly to exploit the large space in behind.
- The Canadian defender did very well on the recovery and did enough to put Manzambi off — He sprinted back, got body to body, and stopped Manzambi from settling.
- Switzerland came to spoil the party for the co-hosts — They scored less than 60 seconds into the second half.
- Switzerland now look likely to advance to the knockout stage as group winners — They scored twice early in the second half and led Canada 2-0.
- Canada might not be out of it after all — Promise David came off the bench and scored with his first touch.
- Canada have all the momentum right now — After Promise David's goal, they kept creating chances, including a shot that went just wide.
- Johnston's header was the moment for Canada — He headed the ball in stoppage time but straight at the goalkeeper.
- If Canada do not score, it will not be for lack of trying — They kept putting balls into the right areas and trying to create chances on goal.

[music] Jesse Marsh's side have already created history by winning their first ever World Cup point. They've won their first ever World Cup match. >> Can they back it up by securing a place in the knockout stages for [music] the very first time? >> They're up against a Switzerland side, wy [music] and experienced opposition. This is their sixth consecutive [music] World Cup and they have reached the knockout stages in the last three editions. They know what they're doing on this stage. It is sure to be a fascinating matchup. We saw a shot of this Malcol who is here supporting his teammates in a wheelchair after that horrific injury that he suffered against Qatar. [cheering] being put under pressure by Buchanan. Well, that's a lovely ball and is he on side and with the chance. A brilliant save. Cornelius blocks the follow up. Fine goalkeeping from Maxim Trap. Brilliant bit of goalkeeping. standing up big, taking on for the team. Big moment for Canada to to keep the tire at a draw. A warning sign though perhaps [cheering] all over the top. Manzambi can't get on the end of it. He didn't find him bolo either. Tony tries to shield the ball. The referee plays advantage. It's played through and the flag has stayed down and it's Karen for Canada. He's been forced wide. There's no one in support. CIVA ARRIVES and Celiva wins the corner. Switzerland appealing for offside and belatedly eventually the flag does go up. >> Yeah, it looked offside from here. It looked like he made his run just slightly too early. He just needed to hold his run fractionally and then there was a a big space to exploit between and behind >> an Zambi giving chase. Look at the pace from Laarea though. Does Lara get there? Man Zambi goes down. Goal kick given. I >> think La does really well there in his recovery. Sprints back in, gets body to body and does enough just to put Manzani off. >> Yeah, good defending from Laareo. He does like to get forward. He's actually scored in this stadium. straight to Kreu. They're racking up the chances though. Switzerland takes it short to Fujer and that's going to be a free kick and it might be the first caution. The referee with a decision to make. Looks like it might just be a warning for the uh the vastly experienced Ricardo Rodriguez [cheering] to Deus. Not the cleanest of contacts from the young center half. A little over half an hour played. Canada now with a chance possibly with David to launch something on the counter. Laren takes a touch, goes for goal and forces into the first real save that the Swiss stopper has had to make. Vargas bearing down on goal. Tries to play it across the face of goal and bowler was at the far post. The wrong choice though from Vargas. So tries to flick it on. Oh, Bolo goes down again. This time he does win the free kick. Laarea on the deck as well. It is Granite Jhaka and it is harmless. [cheering] Over the bar it goes. Shaierre looks for Buchanan. Slightly heavy touch. He does well to find Johnston who finds David who finds Akmad who can only find the goalkeeper but he's forced into a save and pushes it behind for a corner. Yeah, very positive for Canada playing forward. [cheering] Larry picks it up for Canada. Jonathan David sends it wide. Well, confidence is high for Jonathan David after bagging your third hattick for your country as they've done now looking for Manzambi. It comes all the way through Vargas with time to take a touch and find the bottom corner. >> [cheering] >> Switzerland have come to spoil the party. [music] Less than 60 seconds into the second half and it's Switzerland who open the scoring. Cornelius has a little bit of space to play with. Ahmed gets the ball in looking for Kyle Len who can't quite get his forehead to it and behind it goes for a goal kick. and Laren will be disappointed he hasn't been able to get something on that. >> Just 11 minutes into the second half. >> At the other end though, Switzerland with Embolo Manzambi to try and finish it off and he does. [cheering] It creeps under Krepo. This is a blistering start to the second half for Switzerland. >> [music] >> stunned faces of those around us because Switzerland surely now potentially heading to the knockout stages as group winners and again they've taken it short. Miller again gets it in. Deferol was lurking. Koval gets a fish to it and so eventually gets it clear for Switzerland. No outlet though for those in red. Miller picks it up, finds David who takes a touch. Alvedi sliding in to put it behind for a corner. >> That's fantastic defending. >> Do you foresee a slight change in Canadian formation with with David replacing a winger? >> No, it it looks like Olaw's gone to the left. Miller's come to the right and they've stayed in the 442 with both Davids up front to Fujer Saliva. Lovely touch from Civa. Lovely ball. Oh, what an impact. [screaming] It's his first touch. [cheering] >> [cheering] >> Canada might NOT BE OUT OF THIS after all. [cheering] [cheering] Promise David off the bench and on the score sheet. Preppu looking for Jonathan David. [cheering] That's going to be a free kick. [cheering] [cheering] Chistakio. IT'S LOVELY and it's just wide from Cornelius. They have all the momentum right now. >> Cornelius is claiming a corner there >> into six minutes of stoppage time. Switzerland hanging on. That's a lovely ball for Cornelius [cheering] and the defender out from the back. Unable to make clean contact. >> Will they get a better chance? >> That's another great ball. numbers forward for Canada. Flicks on and Kovale smothers and gathers and breathes a sigh of relief for Switzerland. Shuffle. Time to line it up. There's a header and that was the chance. Alistister Johnston straight at Kovale. Yeah, I think that was the moment. [cheering] >> Switzerland let it bounce. Oh, SW by Cole and collected at the second time of asking. >> And if they don't score, it's not for the lack of trying. You know, they're trying to get the balls into the right areas, >> trying to get chances on goals. Switzerland top group B and they reach the knockout stages of the World Cup once again. They've beaten the co-host Canada after racing out of the blocks at the start of the second half. Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi with the goals. The substitute Promise David pulled one back for Canada with his first touch, but it wasn't enough for the co-hosts. They head to LA. It is Switzerland who will remain in Vancouver. Switzerland top the group. Canada finished second. It's finished here. Switzerland 2, Canada 1.
