10 Minutes Of TENSION | Scotland v Morocco | 2026 World Cup EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS
Saibari strikes early as Morocco beat Scotland at the 2026 World Cup
This is extended highlights of Scotland v Morocco at the 2026 World Cup. Morocco won 1-0 through Ismael Saibari's goal after about 70 seconds. The commentary focuses on Scotland's lack of pressure, Morocco's wasted chances, and two penalty appeals.
- Scotland did not put enough pressure on the ball, giving Saibari too much time to pick his finish; this was the worst possible start for Scotland and the ideal one for Morocco — Saibari's run in behind was onside, he had far too much time, and he finished with precision and power over the goalkeeper's shoulder.
- You cannot lose possession against Morocco; if you think you have been fouled, you still have to stop the counter rather than wait for the referee — Morocco had four players in the box, Scotland were fortunate not to be punished, and Morocco just could not get on the end of it.
- He has not really enjoyed the past two tournaments and is determined to take this one in — He said so candidly in a recent interview and stressed that he wants to absorb this tournament.
- McGinn was playing for a penalty rather than being denied a genuine chance — He knew he would not reach the ball and was nowhere near it, even as Scotland protested loudly after the goal kick was given.
- Christie should have done better with that chance and will want it back — Players were closing in, but he still had a good sight of goal.
- McTominay had a case for a penalty — The referee gave no penalty and Scotland fans were unhappy; the contact was disputed and left room for appeal.
- Morocco's recurring problem in this match was creating many good scoring chances and areas but failing to finish — They repeatedly got into dangerous positions and areas, yet the final finish was missing.

[cheering] >> Once more, Boston brings the noise. >> Scotland and Morocco in the whirlpool of a wide-open World Cup group, >> [music] >> just as they were when they last met at this tournament in 1998. On that night in the French city of Saint-Étienne, Morocco won, but both of these nations ended up exiting. There are no fears of early departures this evening. But, the direction of travel in this tournament for these two will significantly be defined by what happens here. >> [cheering] >> Here is Ayub Bouaddi. How impressive he was in that 1-1 draw against Brazil. And through it goes for Morocco's first CHANCE OF THE GAME, BRILLIANTLY TAKEN. >> [cheering] >> SAIBARI AGAIN. WHAT MOROCCAN MAGIC HE is bringing to this World Cup. Barely 60 seconds played, and Ismael Saibari has beaten Angus Gunn with the fiercest finish. >> [cheering] >> Well, Scotland is stunned. They don't get a lot of pressure to the ball. It's a really good run in behind. The player is onside. And Saibari, once he gets it, there's just far too much time to let a player of his quality just look up and decide where he wants to put it. And where he does put it is where a goalkeeper has a really difficult time to save from close range, right over the shoulder. Hits it with precision and power. This is exactly the start Scotland did not want, and exactly the start Morocco did. >> The fastest goal of the World Cup so far. Bang on the 70-second mark. And that one will sting for Scotland, the first that they have conceded at this summer's tournament. >> [cheering] >> No foul on Christie. This is Saibari. Ounahi, and all the way across and out of the reach of not one but two, the latter of which was El Khannouss. >> Well, this you can't do against Morocco. You cannot lose possession. If you think it's a foul, you're going to have to stop the play going in the other way. And if you look, 1 2 3 4 Moroccan players in the box. Very fortunate for Scotland, unlucky for Morocco that they couldn't get on the end. >> [cheering] >> El Khannouss winning the duel with Patterson. El Khannouss. Very famous name in sport in Morocco. His father, Younes. What is highest 14th as a professional tennis player in the world rankings. Hanley trying to guide it back to Gunn. That was almost a terrible mistake. And Scotland gets an escape. >> Yeah, Gunn recovered well. But he hesitated a little. >> Pulled it close towards the goal scorer, Saibari, who was making a similar run. >> Hendry was in a a better position that time. >> Brahim Diaz powering forwards. Saibari. And Diaz. >> [cheering] >> And the set and the finish, which was lacking in the end, a little too high from El Khannouss. After that strong initial run by Brahim Diaz. >> Yeah, really good run and then really unlucky here by Saibari that he just overhit the 1-2. There's all sorts of spaces. Lots of runs in behind players. Lot of Scottish bodies, but not a lot of pressure to the ball. >> First man to take Scotland to three major tournaments, Steve Clarke, was quite candid in a recent interview when he said he hasn't really enjoyed the past two tournaments. But, very much determined to absorb this one. Saibari running clear. El Khannouss blows an opportunity for a second Morocco goal. >> McTominay is furious that they didn't call a foul. And you can see why. He knew what he was doing and he went to stop the play. They said play on. Saibari will be a little upset that he didn't roll the pass. You see it was bouncing up. >> This is Bournemouth's Ryan Christie. Patterson's delivery missed by Che Adams. Picked up by Robertson. McGinn was at the back post. An awkward one to control. >> [cheering] >> Oh, what a start it was and what a goal it was from Ilias Saibari. Half-time at Boston Stadium. Scotland nil, Morocco one. >> [cheering] >> Delicious touch from Brahim Diaz, who is just told by teammate El Khannouss just to settle down. Saibari back to Diaz again. Shoulder to shoulder with McGinn, and McGinn's shoulder was too strong for Brahim Diaz. Ball was bobbling around all over the place. McGinn still got it. McGinn's gone over. He wants a penalty. For now at least, the decision is goal kick, but the Scotland complaints are loud. >> I think McGinn was playing for a penalty. He knew he wasn't going to get there. I know he wasn't anywhere near the ball. >> John McGinn is not going to get what he wants. We go on as we were. El Khannouss with pace. El Khannouss into Scotland's penalty area. Saibari, it's off the bar. And it's on the roof of Angus Gunn's net and not in the back of it. It's a corner. >> Well, this started with pressure from Scotland that Morocco broke through easily. Really good link-up play up that left. Critical block. >> Lively start to the second half. Gunn almost beaten. It was El Khannouss diverting the ball towards the Scottish goal. >> Well, that's one off the training ground. Angus Gunn is really sharp and alert to it. >> [cheering] >> The precise finish here of Saibari that still divides them. McTominay Ryan Christie for Scotland. Just a glimpse of goal and they haven't had too many of those tonight, Scotland. >> No McGinn at the end of the first half, and this is This is now the best chance that they've had. Good play. Oh, Christie will want this one back. I know there's players closing in, but he did have a good sight of goal. >> They're on three points in the group as it stands, Scotland. And remember, they've still got Brazil to play as well. More third-place teams than not will go through, but Scotland want more here. Robertson McTominay No penalty. >> Well, the Scotland fans don't feel the same way. Oh. I think Scott McTominay has a Did he just get the ball? I think he has a case for a penalty. >> Slicked in beautifully. Scotland in behind. It's the side netting from Scott McTominay. But far a touch, it will bring the Tartan Army a corner. >> [cheering] >> McGinn's delivery. McTominay was in there. And so was Dykes. >> Oh, and you can tell by Bono's reaction that if that was on target, he was beaten. I've been there myself. >> Lyndon Dykes. >> [cheering] >> Mazraoui has not liked the introduction of him. Towards Dykes, and it's loose. And it's McTominay, and he was snuffed out of it for room. And creating a problem here for Scotland. El Maimouni. Rahimi. And they are queuing up to finish the job, and the job cannot be finished by Shams Talbi. And here come Morocco with Talbi. Talbi across to El Maimouni. El Maimouni for Morocco. Couldn't seal the deal. >> [cheering] >> Now, it's been the tail of the tape for Morocco getting in many good goal-scoring chan- opportunities and areas, and just not being able to finish off. >> [cheering] >> High and long it goes towards Ross Stewart, towards Lyndon Dykes, and it nearly went into his own net from Chadi Riad. >> [cheering] >> And Riad is really upset with the lack of pressure from the front line. >> [cheering] >> And that's is it. Morocco have their first win of this 2026 World Cup. Courtesy of a goal that was scored after 70 seconds by Ismael Saibari.
