Please welcome today's two teams, Qatar and Switzerland. Qatar and Switzerland have only met once before. That was a friendly in Lugano back in November of 2018. Qatar won that friendly by one goal to nil. Aram Aif who starts today scored that own that goal after 86 minutes and Qatar would love a similar result this afternoon. >> Makmoud Abuada is chosen in goal to make just his seventh appearance for Qatar ahead of the vastly more experienced Michel Basham. Five of this team played in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, including Akram Afi, who scored four goals in qualifying. Ruam Hooki leads the side as Hassan Al-Hadus is among the substitutes, as is Muhammad Munari, who scored Qatar's only goal in the group stage at the last World Cup. Granite Shaka and Ricardo Rodriguez both make history today as they play for the 13th time at a FIFA World Cup. It's the fourth World Cup for both of them and it's the most appearances at a World Cup by a Swiss player. Goalkeeper Gregor Kubal and defenders Nico Alvi and Manuel Akanji all played every minute in qualifying. Striker Braille Embleo scored two goals at the last FIFA World Cup and he is fit to start after doubts that he would be unfit earlier in the week. >> Afif almost getting that one over the top with the header away. And now a great chance for Katar EDSON JR. foiled by Kubal. Well, it was a guilt-edged opportunity, wasn't it? Players that are so unbelievably reliable in Switzerland's defense. It's a swing of a boot by Kangji. Really good shot stop though, wasn't it? Marshimu started two games at the last World Cup. Now, here's a chance for Endoy. Dan Andoi. Excellent save. Abunard getting down low and able to prevent that effort from Endo. Really good break. A defensive mixup which opens the gap for Dan and Dy >> Vargas. Cross on the overlap and it was met by Dan and Doy and he put it high. That could and maybe should have been the opening goal. Well, >> it's met by Dan and Doy. Well, the next touch after the shot should be the ball hitting the back of the net. Zakaria teasing cross into the middle. Is it going to be touched in? Is that a penalty? What does the referee say? He says spot kick. Foul by Aunada. And while the goalkeeper received treatment, let's have another look again. Is there a possible offside there in the middle? >> Very, very tight, isn't it? Var is checking it. >> It's a hefty hefty challenge, isn't it? >> Brave to a degree for the goalkeeper to come out. It is a penalty. Referee just making sure there's no encroachment. It's envelope and it's one Switzerland. They said they wanted to make an early breakthrough and they have done exactly that. Certainly took a while before the actual stop was taken from to think about where he was going to place it. Cool as a cucumber there just looking on because when you've got a man such as this like this in front of goal, you can rely on it fine in the back of the net. Kel Abasha. >> Oh, it was lovely left. Abolo. Chance for number two, Zacharia. Aada with another save. But it was wonderful incisive buildup play. patient as well. That ability to just move Qatar around to then create the gaps where key passes could be made. Abasher drives it across. That is a corner. Abunard with yet another save. >> It certainly feels like it's a mid hit cross, doesn't it, Abishier? There >> was plenty of debate ahead of this game as to whether Switzerland will play a back three or a back four chance. Ed Nilson Junior with the effort and Kubal puts it behind. >> Nothing hesitant there about the goalkeeping was they best real attack that we've seen for quite a while from Katar and Milson Jr. the man once again. >> We go into a minimum of six minutes additional time and who's moved across to that left hand side with Vargas now on the right. Abashure and Doy another excellent save from Abunadada. We'll keep saying it again and again. He's probably been Katar's best player in the first half, ironically given the fact that he's also given away a penalty and got booked. >> Emilo lovely little BALL BACK AND JUST THE WRONG SIDE OF THE POST FROM VARGAS. It's fantastic play once again, isn't it, from Switzerland. And once again, we keep mentioning this man's name, Mahmud Abunad, who's repelling on his own. Switzerland coming forward and forward in waves. >> Almost getting in behind. Embolo picking up possession. Super chance. CLEARED OFF THE LINE. Michelle Abasha must surely have thought there that he was going to double Switzerland's lead. Again, it's got to be a goal at this level in these high pressure games where Switzerland need to lay a marker down to show the intent that they've got at this FIFA World Cup. It is a very tight defense that Switzerland have. That's a foul. Obstruction by Alawi. Vargas with the delivery and the header is over. And the referee's decided that is a corner kick. Once again, another terrific ball into the box from Vargas. The three central defenders just ahead of the penalty spot. >> Vargas again. It's away from Huki. Vargas once more. Driven in from distance and it wasn't too far over. >> What an effort that was. >> Such a delicious strike of a footballer, isn't he? Granite Jhaka. >> Vargas again. Pua drives it deep. Well, it could have been cleared by the defender then, but it wasn't. And Endoy can't play it back into the middle. He made the best of an opportunity. Dan Doy that didn't really believe was coming his way. Roy was the man with the ball into the box. Vargas trying to take on Miguel. Floated in. And it was curling but always just from Granite Jhaka. Curling away from goal. Chance from distance. Always always rising known from Budyaf. Come on. Come on. It does feel like there's a bit more impetus though from Qatar after that hydration break. >> Vargas bearing down on goal. Vargas. Abunada again to the rescue for Katar. Uh Yakin said he was wary of his team losing momentum after the hydration break. Manzambi. Brilliant. Chaz wide from Emilo. Super football from Switzerland. But they can't quite find a way to get a second goal. >> Just the angle, doesn't it, that counts against Braille Envelope. Great play by Manzani. Shown us all exactly why I should be excited about this player being on the pitch. >> Nice little touch. Manzambi will go for goal. Wonderful laconic way, hasn't he, of receiving a football and driving forward. Official attendance announced at 67,966. Goalkeeper should come and claim and does just ahead of Akmed Aladin. Has been a wonderful spectacle, hasn't it? The only game here in Santa Clara. >> Lovely ball. Rail Embleo. Emilo still. Well, he missed kicked that. It looked like he'd done all the hard work and then the final touch was absent. Well, there's a smile rather than a grimace of frustration because even though it's the one goal, they have been in complete control of this game, Switzerland. But so many not just half chances, really workable chances that on another day have it been more clinical, this game would have been a lot more straightforward. >> Player number almune. >> Can he turn and shoot? He can. Akmed Alald with a chance for Katar to draw level in the closing stages. It looks as though Katar will travel north from here to Vancouver to take on the co-hosts Canada with a defeat in their opening game. Unless something happens in the last few moments. Decent ball and it's headed in Hooki. What an ending. IT WAS A SUPERB CROSS IN AND HOOKIE WAS ON THE END OF IT TO make it 1-1 with just seconds left. What a moment. What a moment. It's a big World Cup in all of its glory. The Jeopardy was always there when the score line was only 1. Chance after chance after chance when begging for Switzerland. Katar do not mind one bit. Good. They're imploring the referee to blow the whistle there on the cutter bench. And he has done. What a finish to this group B match. And all four teams in group B as a result now have one point. Braille envelope with a first half penalty for Switzerland. They had so much possession, so many chances, but couldn't take it. And Buhooki's late equalizer means it has finished. Katar one, Switzerland one.
